Abstract

Although procalcitonin (PCT) is a valid marker for early diagnosis of bacterial infections, its accuracy in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients is unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the prognostic significance of PCT in patients with unresectable HCC treated with transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE). A total of 509 patients with unresectable HCC initially treated with TACE were enrolled in this retrospective study. According to quartile of the PCT values, all patients were divided into 4 groups. Overall survival (OS) was evaluated with the Kaplan–Meier method. Significant difference was estimated with the Log rank method. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used for evaluating the significance of the prognostic factor. The median follow-up period was 18 months and there were significant differences in the survival rates between the 4 groups. 114. High-Quality TiO2Electron Transport Film Prepared via Vacuum Ultraviolet Illumination for MAPbI3Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract

The electron transport layer (ETL) plays an important role in determining the conversion efficiency and stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, TiO2thin film was prepared by irradiating diisopropoxy diacetylacetone titanium precursor thin film with 172 nm vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) at a low temperature. The prepared TiO2thin film has higher electron mobility and conductivity. As it is used as an ETL for MAPbI3PSCs, its band structure is better matched with the perovskite, and at the same time, due to the good interface contact, more uniform perovskite crystals are formed. Most importantly, a large number of hydroxyl radicals were formed during VUV irradiation of the precursor film, which made up for the oxygen defect present on the surface of the TiO2thin film, and were adsorbed to the film surface. These hydroxyl groups form hydrogen bonds with methylammonium (MA) components on the MAPbI3buried surface, thus promoting the transfer of photogenerated electrons at the MAPbI3/ETL interface. The power conversion efficiency of PSCs fabricated in air with the ETL prepared by VUV irradiation is 20.46%, which is higher than that of the contrast solar cell based on the sintered ETL (17.96%).

Abstract

Imbalanced dataset is an important factor influencing the effect of learning algorithms. Its influence on the classification learner is even more universal. To deal with imbalanced classification problem, sampling strategy is always an efficient method, however some other aspects of this strategy need to be solved. What distribution should be regulated among the classes and within the class? Which sampling strategy, over-sampling or under-sampling, is more acceptable in specific issues? What metric should be used to measure the classification results? In this paper we propose a general rule to select sampling strategy and design a novel metric V-measure, putting more attention to the minority. As for the distribution between the classes our choice of them is based on the standard whether the selected distribution will lead to significant improvement of the evaluation criteria.

Abstract

A small volumetric capacitance resulting from a low packing density is one of the major limitations for novel nanocarbons finding real applications in commercial electrochemical energy storage devices. Here we report a carbon with a density of 1.58 g cm(-3), 70% of the density of graphite, constructed of compactly interlinked graphene nanosheets, which is produced by an evaporation-induced drying of a graphene hydrogel. Such a carbon balances two seemingly incompatible characteristics: a porous microstructure and a high density, and therefore has a volumetric capacitance for electrochemical capacitors (ECs) up to 376 F cm(-3), which is the highest value so far reported for carbon materials in an aqueous electrolyte. More promising, the carbon is conductive and moldable, and thus could be used directly as a well-shaped electrode sheet for the assembly of a supercapacitor device free of any additives, resulting in device-level high energy density ECs.

126. A Roles Approach to Conflict Strategies: Modeling the Effects of Self- and Other-Role Enactment on Conflict Strategies Through Goals and Emotion

Abstract

This dissertation addresses how, in a conflict situation, individuals enact different roles and how their responses to the other party's role enactment affect the strategies they choose to handle the conflict. A model is proposed to delineate the cognitive and emotional process through which the focal individual and the other party's role enactment affect the focal individual's conflict strategies. The model was first examined using the data based on participants' recall of a past conflict and their answers to questions that assessed behaviors (N = 265). Next, a laboratory experiment was used to test a model in which a conflict was induced and each participant interacted with a confederate to complete a decision making task (N = 261). The focal person's obligation to his or her general role and the other party's expectation violations were manipulated. Participants' embracement of their situated roles, perceived goal importance, emotion, and the use of four types of conflict strategies were measured. Results indicated that obligation predicted the use of relational-protective strategies through the mediating effect of relational goal importance. Embracement of the situated role was found to directly predict the use of a relational-protective confronting strategy but indirectly predict the use of a relational-disruptive confronting strategy through situated goal importance. The other's expectation violation changed the perceived goal importance and the emotion of the focal individual, which predicted the use of relational-disruptive strategies. However, the main reason for the effect of expectation violation on relational-disruptive strategies was individuals' direct reaction to the other's behavior rather than anger. Interpretations and implications of the results, the limitations of the study, theoretical and methodological contributions of the study, and future directions were discussed.

Abstract

It has been argued that the opaqueness of structured bonds, such as mortgage-backed securities, asset-backed securities and collateral debt obligations, was one of the major causes of the recent financial crisis that started in late 2007. We analyse the evolving nature of information asymmetry inherent in various types of structured bonds by examining the U.S. insurers' assets. We show that, prior to 2004, structured bonds were not associated with greater information asymmetry; however, holding more multi-class structured bonds, especially privately placed bonds, increased the information asymmetry when evaluating insurers' assets post-2004. The effect of information asymmetry was more significant with life insurers than with non-life insurers. In addition, by investigating the rating grades of such structured bonds, we find that the market views higher-grade, privately placed, multi-class structured bonds as having the highest information asymmetry among all types of structured bonds post 2004, an effect which is, again, more significant with life insurers. This result shows that structuring complexities and unreliable ratings make structured bonds more opaque than just securitisation itself. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a major cause of both hospital and community infections globally. It's important to illuminate the differences between community-acquired MRSA (CA-MRSA) and hospital-acquired MRSA (HA-MRSA), but there have been confusions on the definition, especially for the MRSA isolates identified within 48 h of admission. This study aimed to determine the molecular characteristics and virulence genes profile of CA and HA-MRSA isolates identified less than 48 h after hospital admission in our region.Methods: A total 62 MRSA isolates identified within 48 h after admission and the clinical data were collected. Antimicrobial susceptibility test (AST) of collected isolates were performed according to the guidelines of Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) 2015, and staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) typing, multilocus sequence typing (MLST), pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and virulence gene profiling were performed to explore the molecular diversity.Results: SCCmec III and sequence type (ST) 239 were the most prevalent SCCmec type and ST in both CA and HA-MRSA groups. HA-MRSA group had higher prevalence of SCCmec III (87.2 %) and ST239 (79.5 %) compared with CA-MRSA (60.9 and 43.4 %, both P < 0.001), while the frequency of SCCmec IV (26.0 %) and ST59 (21.7 %) were higher in CA-MRSA than its counterpart (P < 0.001 and P = 0.003). MRSA-ST239-III was the predominant type in this study (61.3 %, 38/62), especially in HA-MRSA group (76.9 %, 30/39). However, CA-MRSA strains exhibited more diversity in genotypes in this study. Meanwhile, CA-MRSA tended to have lower resistant percentage to non-β-lactams antibiotics but more virulence genes carriage, especially the staphylococcal enterotoxins (SE) genes. Notably, seb gene was only detected in CA-MRSA isolates (52.2 %), likely a significant marker for CA-MRSA isolates. Panton-Valentine leukocidin gene (PVL) was highly detected in both groups, while appeared no significantly different between CA-MRSA (47.8 %) and HA-MRSA (43.6 %).Conclusions: Our findings support a difference in the molecular epidemiology and virulence genes profile of CA-MRSA and HA-MRSA. 134. Market structure change, efficiency and value of firms in the United States property-liability insurance industry

Abstract

This dissertation studies the wave of mergers and acquisitions (M&As) in the US property-liability (P-L) insurance industry during the period 1993–2003 from the perspectives of the industry, the firms, and the stockholders. The first chapter examines efficiency and scale economies. It estimates technical, scale, cost, and revenue efficiency for firms in the US P-L insurance industry over the period 1993–2002 using data envelopment analysis (DEA), analyzes returns to scale of firms, and explains the variation in firms' performance using panel data analysis. The results indicate that, on average, the industry operates with low cost and revenue efficiency. Medium-size firms are found to be most scale efficient. The benefit of scale economies diminishes at certain asset size level and net premium-written level. Regression analysis shows that product mixture, distribution system, organizational form, and capitalization are important determinants of insurers' performance. The second chapter examines whether M&As enhance growth opportunities and improve firms' efficiencies and economies of scale. It finds that targets experience greater technical change, total factor productivity growth, and revenue efficiency growth than non-targets. Acquirers achieve moderately higher revenue efficiency growth than non-acquirers. Scale economies are not a major consideration in the P-L industry consolidation, whereas financial motivation is the main driving force. The final chapter analyzes acquisitions and divestitures in the US P-L insurance industry during the period 1997–2003. It estimates the valuation effects of firms' structural changes using an event study methodology; in particular, it examines the effects of diversification versus focus over the dimensions of both geographical areas and business sectors. Individuals in a conflict are considered to enact both general and situated roles of themselves and to respond to the other person's role behaviors. Obligation from the general role is proposed to explain individual differences in conflict strategies by constraining individuals' embracement of their situated roles and by altering the relative importance of goals. The other person's negative violation of role expectation is proposed to predict relational disruptive conflict behaviors through anger. Participants (N = 265) recalled a past conflict with either a friend or an acquaintance. Their responses to the conflict were assessed. Modeling testing showed that the original model has a moderate but acceptable fit. However, an alternative model with direct links from role enactment to conflict strategies fit data significantly better. Hypotheses testing yielded support for most of the model proposition.
