Abstract

Aim: To investigate the epidemiology of chromosomal abnormalities (CA) in fetuses of all pregnancies based on a provincial‐wide birth defects‐monitoring system, which could provide scientific basis for making relatively policy and research. Methods: Chromosomal abnormalities cases were collected from all hospitals in Hunan Province, China, between 2016 and 2019. The prevalence of CAs was calculated to examine associations among infant sex, maternal age and region. The rates of prenatal diagnosis and termination of pregnancy (TOP) involving CA or associated anomalies were calculated as rates or proportions. Results: From 2016 to 2019, a total of 2 883 890 perinatal infants (28 weeks of gestation to postpartum 7 days) underwent prenatal screening and diagnostic tests, and 3181 fetuses were diagnosed as CA, with the prevalence of 11.03/10 000. The average prevalence of CAs was higher for male than female fetuses (11.33/10 000 vs 10.06/10 000) (OR = 1.13, 95% CI: 1.05–1.21), which was higher in urban areas than rural areas (23.03/10 000 vs 7.13/10 000) (OR = 3.23, 95% CI: 3.02–3.47), and the prevalence increased linearly with maternal age (Xtrend2 = 1821.844, P = 0.000). Among the fetuses with CAs, 3097 (97.36%) were diagnosed prenatally, and 3046 (98.35%) underwent TOP. The majority of CA were numerical abnormalities (90.18%). The main types of numerical autosomal abnormalities were trisomy 21 (6.69/10 000, 59.57%), trisomy 18 (1.13/10 000, 10.04%) and trisomy 13 (0.21/10 000, 1.88%). The main types of numerical gonosomal abnormalities were Klinefelter syndrome (0.68/10 000, 6.02%), Turner syndrome (0.49/10 000, 4.39%), Triple X syndrome (0.26/10 000, 2.29%) and 47,XYY syndrome (0.21/10 000, 1.91%). The three associated anomalies with the highest proportions were congenital heart defects (CHD) (41.06%), cleft palate or/and cleft lip (10.89%) and congenital talipes equinovarus (8.94%). Conclusion: The prevalence of CA was lower than that reported. Chromosome detection should be further promoted including test contest and coverage, especially for urban areas, older mothers and fetuses with CHD, cleft palate or/and cleft lip or congenital talipes equinovarus. Abstract

A 3D porous carbon foam (CF) loaded with Fe3O4/graphene oxide (GO) has been successfully fabricated. As expected, the saturated adsorption capacity of the resulting Fe3O4/GO–CF composite toward As(III) can reach up to 111 mg g−1, superior to those of most of the reported Fe-containing adsorbents. Additionally, the obtained Fe3O4/GO–CF exhibits excellent As(III) removal performance after five absorption–regeneration cycles with more than 70% of removal efficiency. The exceptional arsenic removal performance can be ascribed to its unique 3D porous network structure as well as fully exposed sorption sites originating from Fe3O4 particles. Finally, the macroscopic size and magnetic feature of the Fe3O4/GO–CF monolith are favorable for facile separation after adsorption. Therefore, the hierarchically porous Fe3O4/GO–CF monolith is highly expected to find many potential applications in arsenic-contaminated water remediation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Increasing exposure to heavy metals has stimulated extensive research for designing adsorbents with collective features of high removal efficiency and strong binding affinity to target ions as well as simple and facile separation. Herein, NiFe-layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets have been homogeneously immobilized on a carbon foam (CF) substrate, followed by subsequent intercalation of MoS42− ions into the interlayers, giving rise to a hierarchical porous hybrid monolith (abbreviated as NiFe–MoS42−-LDH/CF). By virtue of abundant binding sites, strong affinity and excellent pore accessibility, the developed NiFe–MoS42−-LDH/CF hybrid monolith is found to be highly effective for the sequestration of Hg2+, Pb2+, and Cu2+, exhibiting ultrahigh sorption capacities of 462, 299, and 128 mg g−1, respectively, and outperforms most of the reported sorbents. Meanwhile, the uptake kinetics of these metal ions are extremely fast, as reflected by ＞99% removal rates within 5 min. More significantly, the developed adsorbent possesses superior selectivity for the target heavy metals with high distribution coefficients in the presence of various interfering ions. Remarkably, the resulting NiFe–MoS42−-LDH/CF hybrid monolith can be utilized as a flow-through filter unit and continuously treat larger volumes of simulated wastewater to below the permitted level for drinking water as compared to a NiFe–MoS42−-LDH powder under identical dynamic conditions, highlighting its feasibility for practical water purification. Abstract

Excessive uptake of nitrite has been proven to be detrimental to the ecological system and human health. Hence, there is a rising requirement for constructing effective electrochemical sensors to precisely monitor the level of nitrite. In this work, NiFe-layered double hydroxide nanosheet arrays (NiFe-LDH NSAs) have been successfully fabricated on a carbon cloth (CC) substrate via a facile one-pot hydrothermal route. By integrating the collective merits of macroporous CC and NiFe-LDH NSAs such as superior electrical conductivity, striking synergistic effect between the dual active components, enlarged electrochemically active surface area, unique three-dimensional hierarchical porous network characteristics, and fast charge transport and ion diffusion, the proposed NiFe-LDH NSAs/CC architecture can be served as a self-supporting sensor toward nitrite detection. As a consequence, the resulting NiFe-LDH NSAs/CC electrode demonstrates superior nitrite sensing characteristics, accompanied by broad linear range (5–1000 μM), quick response rate (ca. 3 s), ultralow detection limit (0.02 μM), and high sensitivity (803.6 μA·mM–1·cm–2). Meanwhile, the electrochemical sensor possesses timeless stability, good reproducibility, and strong anti-interference feature. Importantly, the resulting sensor can determine nitrite level in tap and lake water with high recoveries, suggesting its feasibility for practical applications. These findings show that the obtained NiFe-LDH NSAs/CC electrode holds great prospect in highly sensitive and specific detection of nitrite.

Abstract

To determine whether diet-induced diabetes mellitus (DM) in mice would reproduce the major features of human erectile dysfunction (ED) because DM is a significant risk factor in the development of ED.In total, 150 C57BL6 (bl6) mice were divided into six groups of 25 mice each. Of these 150 mice, 125 were fed a high-fat (45% of total calories) diet for the final 4 (group 2), 8 (group 3), 12 (group 4), 16 (group 5), or 22 (group 6) weeks. Group 1 was fed a normal diet. The mice were 22 to 25 weeks old at study termination. The corporal tissues were harvested and studied for endothelium-dependent and endothelium-independent vasoreactivity, endothelial and smooth muscle cell content by immunohistochemistry, nitric oxide synthase expression by nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide-diaphorase staining, and apoptosis by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase biotin-D-UTP nick-end labeling staining.The blood glucose levels were greater in groups 2 to 6 compared with those in group 1. The vasoreactivity, endothelial cell content, and smooth muscle/collagen ratio were lower and apoptosis were greater in the DM mice (P = 0.0001, P = 0.10, P = 0.0002, P0.001, and P0.001, respectively). Significantly decreased nitric oxide synthase expression and significantly increased apoptosis (P0.0001 each) was found in the high-fat diet mice.Corporal tissue from mice with diet-induced DM demonstrated many of the major functional, structural, and biochemical changes found in humans with ED. This model should serve as a valuable tool for advancing our understanding of the role DM plays in the pathogenesis of ED.
