The protonated cryptand L shows both size and temperature dependent encapsulation for tetrahedral ClO4−and H2PO4−anions (L = N[(CH2)2NHCH2(C6H4-p)CH2NH(CH2)2]3N). The crystal structures of perchlorate complex [(H6L)(ClO4)][ClO4]5(H2O)7(CH3CN) (1) and phosphate complex [(H8L)(H2O)3][H2PO4]8(H2O)9(2) showed that the smaller ClO4−can facilely enter into the cavity of H6L6+, while the larger H2PO4−can not be encapsulated inside the cavity of H6L6+and H8L8+at room temperature. Upon heating, however, H2PO4−can be encapsulated into the cavity of H8L8+to generate a complex of [(H8L)(H2PO4)][H2PO4]7(H2O)18(3), and the encapsulated H2PO4−can be released by increasing the pH value to 2. The reactions of four-coordinated transition metal macrocyclic complexes [ML](ClO4)2(L = 5,5,7,12,12,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane, M = Ni, Cu) with NH4VO3under different conditions gave four coordination polymers of {[(CuL)0.5(H2L)1.5][H2V10O28]·6H2O}n(1·6H2O), {[NiL]3[V16O38(H2O)]·6H2O}n(2·6H2O), {[NiL][VO3]2·0.33H2O}n(3·0.33H2O), and {[CuL][VO3]2·0.33H2O}n(4·0.33H2O). Single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses reveal that four diverse vanadium polyoxoanions, [H2V10O28]4−cluster, [V16O38(H2O)]6−cage, [V6O18]6−ring, and [VO3]nn−chain, were obtained from the same reactant NH4VO3under different conditions. In 1, the cluster anion [H2V10O28]4−alternately bridges [CuL]2+/[H2L]2+to form a one-dimensional chain, and the [V16O38(H2O)]6−cage in 2links three [NiL]2+into a two-dimensional sheet. Compounds 3and 4show three-dimensional structures, which are constructed by the connections of hexanuclear [V6O18]6−rings with [NiL]2+in 3, and [VO3]nn−chains with [CuL]2+in 4, respectively, generating one-dimensional channels occupied by guest water molecules. A series of water clusters encapsulated inside a cryptand cavity were obtained in the cryptand-acid supramolecular adducts of [(H 2O) 2⊂(H 6L)][H 2PO 4] 6(H 2O) 3( 1·3H 2O), [(H 2O) 3⊂(H 6L)][H 2PO 4] 6(H 2O) 11( 2·11H 2O), [(H 2O) 3⊂(H 6L)][CH 3(C 6H 4- p)SO 3] 6(H 2O) 4( 3·4H 2O), and [(H 2O) 6⊂(H 6L)][SO 4] 3(H 2O) 13( 4·13H 2O) (L = N[(CH 2) 2NHCH 2(C 6H 4- p)CH 2NH(CH 2) 2] 3N). In 1and 2, H 6L 6+is hydrogen bonded to six H 2PO 4−through its protonated nitrogen atoms to form two (O···H−N−H···) 3rings at two poles of H 6L 6+. A well encapsulated water dimer, and a circle- and cage-shaped trimer of [H 2PO 4] 3are formed in 1. A well encapsulated circular water trimer and a bowl-shaped trimer of [H 2PO 4] 3are formed in 2. In 3, the steric effect of the tolyl group of [CH 3(C 6H 4- p)SO 3] −causes a change in the conformation of H 6L 6+to generate a favorable environment for a linear water trimer inside the crystand cavity. The preparation and crystal structures of five cyano-bridged Fe-Mn complexes, [(bipy)2FeII(CN)2MnII(bipy)2]2(CIO4)4 (1), [(bipy)2FeII(CN)2MnII(DMF)3(H2O)]2(CIO4)4 (2), {[(Tp)FeIII(CN)3]2MnII(DMF)2(H2O)}2 (3), {[(Tp)FeIII(CN)3]2MnII- (DMF)2}n (4), and Na2[MnIIFeII(CN)6] (5) (bipy = 2,2′-bipyridine, Tp = tris(pyrazolyl)hydroborate), are reported here. Compounds 1–4 contain the basic Fe2(CN)4Mn2 square building units, of which 1-3 show the motif of discrete molecular squares of Fe2(CN)4Mn2 and 4 possesses a 1D double-zigzag chainlike structure, while compound 5 is a 3D cubic framework analogous to that of Prussian blue. Compounds 1 and 2 show weak ferromagnetic interactions between two Mn(II) ions through the bent -NC-Fe(II)-CN-bridges. Compound 3 shows weak antiferromagnetic coupling between the Fe(III) and Mn(II) ions, while compound 4 displays a metamagnetic-like behavior with TN = 5.2 K and Hc = 10.5 kOe. Four novel dinickel complexes, coordinated by mixed ligands of tren and racemic amino acids, namely [Ni2(tren)2(dl-alaninato)(H2O)]I3·2H2O (1), [Ni2(tren)2(dl-leucinato)(H2O)]I3·2.5H2O (2), [Ni2(tren)2(dl-phenylalaninato)(H2O)]I3·H2O (3), and {[Ni2(tren)2(dl-histinato)](ClO4)3·1.5H2O}n (4), have been synthesized and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography, FTIR, u.v. and e.s. spectra. They represent the first series of dinickel(II) complexes bridged by the unusual (N,O,O')-coordinated α-amino acids. In complexes (1–3), one of the nickel(II) centers is coordinated by four N-atoms of the tren ligand, one O-atom of the carboxylate group of the amino acidato ligand and one H2O molecule. The other nickel(II) center is also coordinated by the four N-atoms of the tren ligand, one carboxylic O-atom and the amino N-atom of the amino acidato ligand, resulting in an asymmetric dinuclear core with chromophores of NiN4O2 and NiN5O. In the polymeric {[Ni2(tren)2(dl-histinato)](ClO4)3·1.5H2O}n (4), the imidazole N-atom is also involved in ligation with nickel(II) and both nickel(II) centers have the same chromophore described as NiN5O. The Ni⃛Ni distances are in the 5.5199(10)–5.5807(15) Å range. A series of trinuclear copper(I) acetylide complexes with carbonyl moiety, [Cu3(μ-dppm)3(μ3-η1-C≡CC(O)R)2](ClO4) (R = H (1), CH3 (2), OCH3 (3), NH2 (4), NEt2 (5)) (dppm = bis(diphenylphosphino)methane), have been synthesized and characterized. The crystal structures of [Cu3(μ-dppm)3(μ3-η1-C≡CC(O)CH3)2](ClO4) (2) and [Cu3(μ-dppm)3(μ3-η1-C≡CC(O)NH2)2](ClO4) (4) were determined by X-ray diffraction. The photophysical properties of complexes 1−5 have been studied. Complexes 1−5 show luminescence both in the solid state and in acetonitrile solution at 298 K, and their emission energies are in the order: 5 > 4 > 3 > 2 > 1. Density function theory (DFT) calculations at the hybrid Perdew, Burke, and Ernzerhof functional (PBE1PBE) level were performed on model complex 1 to elucidate the emission origin of complexes 1−5.
