Abstract The present study demonstrates that the down-regulation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-α (PPARα) results in chronic low ambient temperature (LT) exposure-induced cardiac dysfunction and remodeling, emphasizing the therapeutic potential of PPARα activation strategies (e.g. fenofibrate treatment) in LT-associated cardiac injury.

Abstract Electrochemical CO2 reduction to value‐added chemicals and fuels using renewable energy represents a promising strategy for reducing CO2 emissions and achieving effective energy storage. In this work, nano‐sized CuO catalysts were prepared by using the homogeneous precipitation method for electrochemical CO2 reduction to CO. The CO2 reduction studies combined with the characterization results show that structure‐activity relationships of the CuO catalysts depend on the calcination temperature. The as‐synthesized CuO catalysts calcined at different temperatures are capable of reducing CO2 to generate syngas with tunable CO/H2 ratios of 1 : 2 to 2 : 1. The desired CuO‐400 catalyst exhibits good morphology, small particle size, and enriched oxygen‐vacancy defects and, therefore, shows good performance for electrochemical CO2 reduction to CO. Under the given potential of −0.93 V vs. RHE, CuO‐400 exhibits good reduction activity and selectivity with a great electrochemically active surface area normalized CO partial current density of 1.44 mA/cm2 and a high CO faradaic efficiency of 48.2 %. The deactivation of CuO‐400 in the long‐term test is associated with the increase in particle size, the reduction of CuO to Cu2O and metallic Cu, and the coverage of surface active sites by the formed carbonate species. Our findings indicate that CuO catalysts with tunable physicochemical properties are promising candidates for electrochemical CO2 reduction to produce syngas.

To summarize the experience of 4,761 patients who underwent ophthalmic surgery during the COVID-19 epidemic without iatrogenic and cross-infection, surgically related complications, and zero infection among medical staff. To explore environmental preparation for eye surgery during the COVID-19 epidemic, protective measures for medical staff and patients, isolation and transport of patients, medical waste disposal, interoperative terminal treatment.Recommendations for management strategies and infection prevention and control during COVID-19 epidemics, as well as preventive and control measures for ophthalmic surgery should be recommended.

Abstract Background Cancer cells cooperate with cells that compose their environment to promote tumor growth and invasion. Among them, adipocytes provide lipids used as a source of energy by cancer cells and adipokines that contribute to tumor expansion. Mechanisms supporting the dynamic interactions between cancer cells and stromal adipocytes, however, remain unclear. Methods We set-up a co-culture model with breast cancer cells grown in 3D as mammospheres and human adipocytes to accurately recapitulate intrinsic features of tumors, such as hypoxia and cancer cell–adipocytes interactions. Results Herein, we observed that the lipid droplets’ size was reduced in adipocytes adjacent to the mammospheres, mimicking adipocyte morphology on histological sections. We showed that the uncoupling protein UCP1 was expressed in adipocytes close to tumor cells on breast cancer histological sections as well as in adipocytes in contact with the mammospheres. Mammospheres produced adrenomedullin (ADM), a multifactorial hypoxia-inducible peptide while ADM receptors were detected in adipocytes. Stimulation of adipocytes with ADM promoted UCP1 expression and increased HSL phosphorylation, which activated lipolysis. Invalidation of ADM in breast cancer cells dramatically reduced UCP1 expression in adipocytes. Conclusions Breast tumor cells secreted ADM that modified cancer–associated adipocytes through paracrine signaling, leading to metabolic changes and delipidation. Hence, ADM appears to be crucial in controlling the interactions between cancer cells and adipocytes and represents an excellent target to hinder them.

Abstract Background There are conflicting research results about the survival differences between hemodialysis(HD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD). The present study estimated the survival and the relative mortality hazard for incident HD and PD patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD) in eastern China. Methods This study examined a cohort of patients with ESRD who initiated dialysis therapy in Zhejiang province between Jan of 2010 and Dec of 2014, followed up until the end of 2015. PD patients were matched in a 1:1 fashion with HD patients, and Kaplan–Meier analysis was used to explore the survival of them. The Cox proportional hazard regression model was applied to identify the factors that predict survival by treatment modality. Subgroup analyses were conducted by stratifying patients according to gender, age, causes of ESRD and comorbidities. Results Among a total of 22,379 enrolled patients (17,029 HD patients and 5350 PD patients), 5350 matched pairs were identified, and followed for a median of 29 months (3 ~ 72 months). Vaccination is an effective measure to prevent infectious diseases. Protective immunity is induced when the immune system is exposed to a vaccine formulation with appropriate immunogenicity. However, traditional injection vaccination is always accompanied by fear and severe pain. As an emerging vaccine delivery tool, microneedles overcome the problems associated with routine needle vaccination, which can effectively deliver vaccines rich in antigen-presenting cells (APCs) to the epidermis and dermis painlessly, inducing a strong immune response. In addition, microneedles have the advantages of avoiding cold chain storage and have the flexibility of self-operation, which can solve the logistics and delivery obstacles of vaccines, covering the vaccination of the special population more easily and conveniently. Examples include people in rural areas with restricted vaccine storage facilities and medical professionals, elderly and disabled people with limited mobility, infants and young children afraid of pain. Currently, in the late stage of fighting against COVID-19, the main task is to increase the coverage of vaccines, especially for special populations. To address this challenge, microneedle-based vaccines have great potential to increase global vaccination rates and save many lives. This review describes the current progress of microneedles as a vaccine delivery system and its prospects in achieving mass vaccination against SARS-CoV-2.

Summary: The emergence of carbapenem-resistant hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae (CR-hvKP) causing high mortality in clinical patients infers the urgent need for developing therapeutic agents. Here, we demonstrated vitamin C (VC) exhibited strong bactericidal, anti-biofilm, and virulence-suppressing effects on CR-hvKP. Our results showed such a bactericidal effect is dose-dependent both in vitro and in the mouse infection model and is associated with induction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. In addition, VC inhibited biofilm formation of CR-hvKP through suppressing the production of exopolysaccharide (EPS). In addition, VC acted as an efflux pump inhibitor at subminimum inhibitory concentration (sub-MIC) to disrupt transportation of EPS and capsular polysaccharide to bacterial cell surface, thereby further inhibiting biofilm and capsule formation. Furthermore, virulence-associated genes in CR-hvKP exposed to sub-MIC of VC were downregulated. Our findings indicated VC could be an effective and safe therapeutic agent to treat CR-hvKP infections in urgent cases when all current treatment options fail.

Antibiotic pollution has received increasing global and scientific attention in recent years due to its serious impact on ecosystems and human health. As a new advanced oxidation method, Cold Atmospheric Plasmas (CAPs) have been successfully applied to degrade oxytetracycline (OTC) with a large removal rate, high energy efficiency, and environment-friendly requirements; however, the reaction pathways are still unclear. In this study, a reactive Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation is performed to investigate the mechanisms of OTC degradation induced by Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) in CAPs. The simulations showed the breaking of chemical bonds upon the impact of ROS, such as C–C, C–N, and C–O. In particular, the removal of important functional groups, including the acylamino at the C2 site, the dimethylamine at the C4 site, and the tertiary alcohol at the C12a site, is observed, and the destruction of these key structures indicates the degradation of OTC by reducing the antibacterial ability. The final products revealed by the computational data agree well with the experimental measurements. The dose effects on OTC degradation are also examined by adjusting the numbers of ROS in the simulation box. This study can further enhance the understanding of OTC degradation induced by CAP according to the reactive MD simulation results, unveiling the key pathways of OTC degradation.

The early evolutionary history of the armored dinosaurs (Thyreophora) is obscured by their patchily distributed fossil record and by conflicting views on the relationships of Early Jurassic taxa. Here, we describe an early diverging thyreophoran from the Lower Jurassic Fengjiahe Formation of Yunnan Province, China, on the basis of an associated partial skeleton that includes skull, axial, limb, and armor elements. It can be diagnosed as a new taxon based on numerous cranial and postcranial autapomorphies and is further distinguished from all other thyreophorans by a unique combination of character states. Although the robust postcranium is similar to that of more deeply nested ankylosaurs and stegosaurs, phylogenetic analysis recovers it as either the sister taxon of Emausaurus or of the clade Scelidosaurus+ Eurypoda. This new taxon, Yuxisaurus kopchicki, represents the first valid thyreophoran dinosaur to be described from the Early Jurassic of Asia and confirms the rapid geographic spread and diversification of the clade after its first appearance in the Hettangian. Its heavy build and distinctive armor also hint at previously unrealized morphological diversity early in the clade’s history.

Human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) have the potential to be differentiated into any cell type, making them a relevant tool for therapeutic purposes such as cell-based therapies. In particular, they show great promise for obesity treatment as they represent an unlimited source of brown/beige adipose progenitors (hiPSC-BAPs). However, the low brown/beige adipocyte differentiation potential in 2D cultures represents a strong limitation for clinical use. In adipose tissue, besides its cell cycle regulator functions, the cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 2A (CDKN2A) locus modulates the commitment of stem cells to the brown-like type fate, mature adipocyte energy metabolism and the browning of adipose tissue. Here, using a new method of hiPSC-BAPs 3D culture, via the formation of an organoid-like structure, we silenced CDKN2A expression during hiPSC-BAP adipogenic differentiation and observed that knocking down CDKN2A potentiates adipogenesis, oxidative metabolism and the browning process, resulting in brown-like adipocytes by promoting UCP1 expression and beiging markers. Our results suggest that modulating CDKN2A levels could be relevant for hiPSC-BAPs cell-based therapies.

The study was to investigate the vague words measurement across native and non-native English speakers and gender differences. Ninety-two students from the University of Oklahoma participated in this study by filling out an internet-based questionnaire on the vague words. The researchers put each of the thirty-two vague words in a context, or the same word put into different contexts. The participants were asked to rate the degree or the numerical value that they thought was the most appropriate in the context of the vague word. It was found that ten out of the thirty-two words had a significant difference across the native and non-native English speakers, and two of thirty-two words had a significant difference across genders. The word "fairly" showed the most significant difference interactions of language speaking by gender. (Contains 1 table and 1 figure.)

Abstract Perioperative sleep disturbance is a risk factor for persistent pain after surgery. Clinical studies have shown that patients with insufficient sleep before and after surgery experience more intense and long-lasting postoperative pain. We hypothesize that sleep deprivation alters L-type calcium channels in the dorsal root ganglia (DRG), thus delaying the recovery from post-surgical pain. To verify this hypothesis, and to identify new predictors and therapeutic targets for persistent postoperative pain, we first established a model of postsurgical pain with perioperative sleep deprivation (SD) by administering hind paw plantar incision to sleep deprivation rats. Then we conducted behavioral tests, including tests with von Frey filaments and a laser heat test, to verify sensory pain, measured the expression of L-type calcium channels using western blotting and immunofluorescence of dorsal root ganglia (an important neural target for peripheral nociception), and examined the activity of L-type calcium channels and neuron excitability using electrophysiological measurements. We validated the findings by performing intraperitoneal injections of calcium channel blockers and microinjections of dorsal root ganglion cells with adeno-associated virus. We found that short-term sleep deprivation before and after surgery increased expression and activity of L-type calcium channels in the lumbar dorsal root ganglia, and delayed recovery from postsurgical pain. Blocking these channels reduced impact of sleep deprivation. We conclude that the increased expression and activity of L-type calcium channels is associated with the sleep deprivation-mediated prolongation of postoperative pain. L-type calcium channels are thus a potential target for management of postoperative pain.

Abstract Background Shenxian-Shengmai (SXSM) Oral Liquid is a CFDA-approved patent Chinese Herbal medicine, which has been clinically used for the treatment of bradycardia. However, its active components and action mechanism remain to be established. The present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of SXSM on bradycardia and to identify the possible active components and their pharmacological targets for this action. Methods A literature-based meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the clinical efficacy of SXSM on bradycardia, which was confirmed by a rat ex vivo cardiac model. Network pharmacology analysis was then conducted to reveal the potential targets of SXSM active components and their anti-arrhythmia mechanisms. Finally, the identified drug-target interaction was confirmed by immunofluorescence assay in cardiomyocyte. Results Meta-analysis of the available clinical study data shows that Shenxian-Shengmai Oral Liquid has a favorable effect for bradycardia. In an ex vivo bradycardia model of rat heart, SXSM restored heart rate by affecting Heart rate variability (HRV) which is associated with autonomic nervous system activity. A drug-target-pathway network analysis connecting SXSM components with arrhythmia suggested that a prominent anti-arrhythmia mechanisms of SXSM was via β1-adrenergic signaling pathway, which was subsequently validated by immunofluorescence assay showing that SXSM indeed increased the expression of ADRB1 in cultured cardiomyocytes. Conclusion By combining approaches of clinical evidence mining, experimental model confirmation, network pharmacology analyses and molecular mechanistic validation, we show that SXSM is an effective treatment for bradycardia and it involves multiple component interacting via multiple pathways, among which is the critical β1-adrenergic receptor upregulation. Our integrative approach could be applied to other multi-component traditional Chinese medicine investigation where ample clinical data are accumulated but advanced mechanistic studies are lacking.

Traditional adhesives or glues such as cyanoacrylates, fibrin glue, polyethylene glycol, and their derivatives have been widely used in biomedical fields. However, they still suffer from numerous limitations, including the mechanical mismatch with biological tissues, weak adhesion on wet surfaces, biological incompatibility, and incapability of integrating desired multifunction. In addition to adaptive mechanical and adhesion properties, adhesive biomaterials should be able to integrate multiple functions such as stimuli-responsiveness, control-releasing of small or macromolecular therapeutic molecules, hosting of various cells, and programmable degradation to fulfill the requirements in the specific biological systems. Therefore, rational molecular engineering and structural designs are required to facilitate the development of functional adhesive materials. This review summarizes and analyzes the current supramolecular design strategies of representative adhesive materials, serving as a general guide for researchers seeking to develop novel adhesive materials for biomedical applications.

Bamboo shoot is a delicious and nutritious forest vegetable. It has been found that bamboo shoots collected from low-light environments have a less bitter taste. The molecular mechanism of light in the regulation of bitter substance accumulation in bamboo shoots is still unclear. In this study, we applied a shading treatment to Pleioblastus amarus bamboo shoots in the preharvesting period. The reduction in the bitterness intensity was confirmed by a sensory test. An integrated metabolomic and transcriptomic analysis was performed on P. amarus bamboo shoots grown under shading treatment and normal growing conditions, and 56 differentially accumulated metabolites and 178 differentially expressed genes were identified. The results showed that the contents of a series of phenolic acids related to the tyrosine metabolism pathway were downregulated under shading treatment, revealing that shading decreased the accumulation of phenolic acids and further mediated the resulting bitter taste of the bamboo shoots. This work will be helpful for understanding the regulatory mechanisms governing the bitter tasting substances in bamboo shoots grown under a shading treatment and provides a reference for the use of shading treatment in cultivation practices to improve the taste of bamboo shoots.

Abstract Background S100A9 was originally discovered as a factor secreted by inflammatory cells. Recently, S100A9 was found to be associated with several human malignancies. The purpose of this study is to investigate S100A9 expression in gastric cancer and explore its role in cancer progression. Methods S100A9 expression in gastric tissue samples from 177 gastric cancer patients was assessed by immunohistochemistry. The expression of its dimerization partner S100A8 and the S100A8/A9 heterodimer were also assessed by the same method. The effect of exogenous S100A9 on motility of gastric cancer cells AGS and BGC-823 was then investigated. Results S100A9 was specifically expressed by inflammatory cells such as macrophages and neutrophils in human gastric cancer and gastritis tissues. Statistical analysis showed that a high S100A9 cell count (> = 200) per 200x magnification microscopic field in cancer tissues was predictive of early stage gastric cancer. High S100A9-positive cell count was negatively correlated with lymph node metastasis (P = 0.009) and tumor invasion (P = 0.011). S100A9 was identified as an independent prognostic predictor of overall survival of patients with gastric cancer (P = 0.04). Patients with high S100A9 cell count were with favorable prognosis (P = 0.021). Further investigation found that S100A8 distribution in human gastric cancer tissues was similar to S100A9. However, the number of S100A8-positive cells did not positively correlate with patient survival. The inflammatory cells infiltrating cancer were S100A8/A9 negative, while those in gastritis were positive. Furthermore, exogenous S100A9 protein inhibited migration and invasion of gastric cancer cells. Conclusions Our results suggested S100A9-positive inflammatory cells in gastric cancer tissues are associated with early stage of gastric cancer and good prognosis.

Introduction: Vimentin, a classical marker of epithelial–mesenchymal transition, reflects the invasiveness of cancer cells. Its role in the genesis and progression of tumor has been reported in various cancers, including renal cell carcinoma. However, the impact of vimentin on tumor microenvironment, particularly its implication with tumor-infiltrating immune cells, is unknown.Methods: We conducted this study in 231 patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) to determine the potential relationship between vimentin and immune status. Using immunohistochemical staining, expression of vimentin, CD8, FOXP3, programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1), and programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) were evaluated in resected tumor tissue. Kaplan–Meier analysis and Cox regression models were used for survival analysis. Chi-square test, Fisher exact test, and Mann–Whitney U-test were used for comparison between vimentin high and low groups.Results: High expression of vimentin, stroma PD-L1, and PD-1 indicated poor overall survival, whereas low regulatory T cell or high CD8+ T cell infiltration indicated long overall survival. Stroma PD-L1 (P = 0.030), vimentin (P = 0.026) expression, and CD8+ T cell infiltration (P < 0.001) were independent prognostic factors in mRCC. High vimentin expression was accompanied by high PD-1, PD-L1 expression, and increased regulatory T cell infiltration (all P < 0.001), indicating immunosuppression in the tumor microenvironment.Conclusions: We revealed that vimentin expression was associated with immunosuppression in mRCC, and the immune-suppressive status might be possibly posed by PD-1/PD-L1. Patients with high vimentin expression may acquire potential benefit from the recently approved PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors. However, further clinical trials are needed to validate our findings.

Objectives: In China, there are two major medical insurance models: the Urban Basic Medical Insurance (UBMI) and the New Cooperative Medical Scheme (NCMS). The aim of the present study was to evaluate the association of the medical insurance type of patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD) with their survival. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the end-stage renal disease adult patients initiating HD between January 2010 and December 2014 in Zhejiang province, followed up through 31 December 2015. Patients who had received HD for over 3 months were separated into two groups, based on different medical insurance type. Demographic, clinical data, and clinical outcomes were analyzed. The survival rates were calculated by using the Kaplan–Meier method. Results: A total of 6779 patients (59 ± 16 years old, 4331 males (63.9%)) with UBMI and 7177 (59 ± 16 years old, 3778 males (52.8%)) with NCMS enrolled from 226 hemodialysis units. Compared with UBMI group, patients with NCMS had a smaller percentage of hypertensive nephropathy, diabetes mellitus and arteriovenous fistula, faced with more problems in anemia, hypoalbuminemia and metabolism of calcium and phosphorous. The 1-, 3- and 5-year survival rates were 95.4, 84.4, and 74.1% in UBMI group, 93.1, 79.7, and 67.7% in NCMS group, respectively. Abstract Background Quality of care (QoC) attracts global concerns when unsafe and misuse of healthcare wastes resources and endangers people’s health, especially in low- and middle-income countries. However, little is known about quality of care delivered in China. This study was intended to gauge the quality of care for acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients in Beijing and identify the quality gaps across tertiary hospitals. Methods One thousand two hundred twenty eight patients, covered by Employee Essential Health Insurance Scheme and diagnosed of AMI, was sampled from 14 large comprehensive hospitals in Beijing, China. Chart review study was conducted through the discharge data and medical records of inpatients to evaluate 6 quality outcomes of interest, including the use of aspirin, beta blocker, and statin at discharge; use of aspirin within 24 h at arrival; angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEI) or angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) for left ventricular systolic dysfunction (LVSD); percutaneous transluminal coronary intervention (PCI) within 90 min at arrival. Results Of the 1228 subjects, the mean age was 60.8 (11.8 SD) years and 83.0% were male. The overall medication prescribed was highly compliant with the clinical guidelines (97.0% [95% CI 96.8–97.2] for aspirin and 96.3% [95% CI 96.0–96.5] for statin), except for beta-blocker (83.6% [95% CI 83.0–84.1]) and ACEI/ARB use (61.4% [95% CI 60.7–62.2]). Er3+ doped BaxSr0.998-xEr0.002Nb2O6 (SBNx, x = 0.25, 0.40, 0.50, 0.60, 0.75) and Er–Yb co-doped Ba3.75Sr1.24-xEr0.01YbxNb10O30 (SBN75, x = 0, 1:10, 1:20, 1:25, 1:30) ferroelectric ceramics were synthesized by a solid-state reaction method. With the change in stoichiometric x, upconversion (UC) luminescence and temperature sensing properties of the SBN were investigated. The sample (SBN75) at the morphotropic phase boundary is found to obtain the highest emission intensity. For Er–Yb co-doped Ba3.75Sr1.24-xEr0.01YbxNb10O30 ceramics, bright UC green and red emissions originated from a two-photon energy-transfer process were observed under 980 nm laser excitation. The temperature sensing properties were measured by means of a fluorescence intensity ratio technique, and the maximum sensitivity was approximately 0.0074 K−1 at 631 K in the sample SBN75:0.01Er/0.20Yb. From these findings, Er3+ ions doped in SBN ceramic, at the O-T phase boundary, have potential applications for temperature sensors.

Compared to cell suspensions or monolayers, 3D cell aggregates provide cellular interactions organized in space and heterogeneity that better resume the real organization of native tissues. They represent powerful tools to narrow down the gap between in vitro and in vivo models, thanks to their self-evolving capabilities. Recent strategies have demonstrated their potential as building blocks to generate microtissues. Developing specific methodologies capable of organizing these cell aggregates into 3D architectures and environments has become essential to convert them into functional microtissues adapted for regenerative medicine or pharmaceutical screening purposes. Although the techniques for producing individual cell aggregates have been on the market for over a decade, the methodology for engineering functional tissues starting from them is still a young and quickly evolving field of research. In this review, we first present a panorama of emerging cell aggregates microfabrication and assembly technologies. We further discuss the perspectives opened in the establishment of functional tissues with a specific focus on controlled architecture and heterogeneity to favor cell differentiation and proliferation.

Abstract Background Beginning in 2010, China has endeavoured to expand health coverage and provide residents with fair access to primary health care with the intention of improving health equity. This study aims to measure changes in income-related health inequity in China between 2010 and 2014. Methods Data were extracted from the nationally representative annual survey of the China Family Panel Studies in 2010 and 2014 with a first wave of 31,743 respondents and a second wave of 32,006 respondents over age 15. In both years, subjects were stratified into the following five categories of income: poorest 20%, lower 20%, medium 20%, higher 20% and richest 20%. The concentration curve and index was used to compare the distribution of health status in income quintiles, and a logistic model was used to examine the relationship between health and socioeconomic indicators with self-assessed health as the primary outcome of interest. Results Income was significantly associated with self-assessed health in China. The concentration curve was above the line of equality in both years, while the self-assessed health line in 2014 was closer to the equality line. The concentration index (CIN) displayed the similar result of decreasing inequality, with the CIN in 2014 (− 0.157) closer to zero (the line of equality) than that of 2010 (− 0.167). In 2010, there was a decreasing trend of people reporting poor health from the poorest to the richest, while in 2014, there was no significant difference between the poorest and lower 20% or between the higher 20% and the medium 20%. The odds ratio of the prevalence of self-reporting poor health between the poorest and richest increased from 0.555 (95% CI: 0.484–0.636) in 2010 to 0.598 (95% CI: 0.513–0.696) in 2014. Conclusions From 2010 to 2014, the self-assessed health gap between income groups in China decreased, and health equity improved. However, health differences remain. In order to achieve better health for all, China should further strengthen the role of primary care in reducing health inequity.

Abstract Neem (Azadirachta indica) extract is well-known as a natural pesticide for the control of agricultural pests. Azadirachtin A and its structural analogues are considered as active compounds. However, the amounts of azadirachtins varies in neem extracts, providing a variety of insecticidal activities. In this study, a novel method of automated online solid-phase extraction coupled with liquid chromatography/quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (SPE-LC–Q-TOF–MS) was developed and validated for simultaneous quantification of five azadirachtins (azadirachtins A, B, D, H and I) in seed and leaf extracts of A. indica. Different experimental parameters (such as SPE cartridge, injection volume and washing step) were optimized. The optimized SPE-LC–Q-TOF–MS method showed good recovery (82.0–102.8%), linearity (r 2 ≥ 0.9991) and precision (0.83–4.83%). The limit of detections (LODs) for the five analytes ranged from 0.34 to 0.76 ng mL−1. The validated method was successfully applied for determination of the analytes in the neem leaves and seeds from different locations and a neem formulation. The online SPE-LC–Q-TOF–MS method was found to be a simple, precise and accurate and can be used as a powerful tool for quality control of neem extracts or its formulations.
