Abnormal venous leaks are a causative factor of impotence and can be identified by perfusion cavernosography. The perfusion cavernosography was carried out in 47 impotent patients and the venous leakage was found in 21. Among 21 cases found the venous leakage, 20 cases underwent surgical treatment and the results showed that the patient's sexual life (erection) was not satisfactory after simple ligation of the deep dorsal vein and that ligation of the abnormal venous outlets at the level of the crura on penis was an effective way to restore potency. The authors consider that intra-cavernous papaverine injection induced penile erection is an effective means of screening for venous leakage.

The levels in $^{74,76}\mathrm{Kr}$ were studied with in-beam $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-spectroscopy techniques and the ${\ensuremath{\beta}}^{+}$ decay of $^{76}\mathrm{Rb}$. The energies of the ${2}_{1}^{+}$ states in $^{74,76}\mathrm{Kr}$ deviate from smooth behavior compared with the higher spin levels. The yrast cascade $B(E2)$'s are highly collective. The $^{74,76}\mathrm{Kr}$ ground states have unusually large deformation. The origin of this deformation and of shape coexistence in this region is described in terms of the protons driving the deformation.

Excited states in /sup 76/Kr have been investigated via the /sup 66/Zn(/sup 12/C, 2n) reaction at a beam energy of 39 MeV. Gamma-ray energies, intensities, spins, parities, and mean lives of excited states were extracted from measurements of the ..gamma.. rays which were emitted in-beam. The energies of 25 excited levels were deduced from ..gamma..-..gamma.. coincidence data, and all but three of these levels are members of bandlike structures which persist to high spin. The Doppler shift attenuation method was used to extract the lifetimes of thirteen excited levels. The E2 strengths are highly collective. The positive parity yrast band to spin (12/sup +/) has been observed with a forward bend at low spin, but with no backbending in the moment of inertia below 12/sup +/. A positive parity band with even- and odd-spin members to (6/sup +/) and (9/sup +/), respectively, has been observed and is interpreted as a ..delta..J = 1 quasigamma band. Negative-parity bands built on 5/sup -/ and (6/sup -/) levels have been observed to spins of (13/sup -/) and (12/sup -/), respectively. Finally, the first excited 0/sup +/ state and a 2/sup +/ level built on it have been identified and are assigned to amore » near spherical configuration which coexists with the ground state that has an unusually large deformation.« less

Human antithrombin III (AT-III) was partially reduced under mild conditions in the absence or presence of low molecular weight heparin. Quantitation of reduced disulfide bonds was facilitated by the application of a water-soluble color reagent, 4-N,N-dimethylaminoazobenzene-4'-iodoacetamido-2'-sulfonic acid (S-DABIA). The study shows that the three disulfide linkages of AT-III can be sequentially reduced, with Cys8-Cys128 being the most sensitive, followed by Cys21-Cys95, while Cys247-Cys430 is the most resistant to the mild reduction conditions. The rate of reduction of Cys8-Cys128 and Cys21-Cys95 was significantly decreased in the presence of heparin. The reduction of Cys8-Cys128 was also found to correlate quantitatively with the loss of heparin-accelerated antithrombin activity, heparin binding affinity, and heparin-induced fluorescence enhancement. These results suggest that Cys8-Cys128 is required for the integrity of the heparin binding domain of AT-III and support previous findings that lysyl residues surrounding Cys128 (Lys107, Lys114, Lys125, and Lys136) constitute an important part of the heparin binding site in AT-III.

Two weak α groups have been observed in 127I‐induced reactions on 40Ca. The energies, apparent half‐lives and excitation functions of these α groups have been measured. We confirm and make unambiguous a previous tentative assignment of these α groups to 162,163Ta. Our assignment is based on their measured half‐lives as well as on the good agreement between their excitation functions and those exhibited by well‐known γ rays from the decays of 162,163Ta, identified in earlier studies with isotope‐separated samples. The mass excesses of 162,163Ta, as well as those of seven other nuclides in their α‐decay chains, have been deduced from the α‐decay data obtained in the present work and in previously published studies. The three heaviest members of the 163Ta chain are shown to have proton separation energies that are less than zero.

Our work on scoring the frequency of micronucleus (MNF) directly in 1–2 drops of human blood obtained from skin puncture was reported in a previous paper. The results of further study are given as follows: 1. MNF in 117 health donors (male 58, female 59) were in the range of 0–1%, with the mean of 0.14%, and about 20.5% of the samples with ≥ 0.5%. 2. The MNF in 100 workers dealing with radioactive materials was 0–8%, with a mean of 1.3%; the rate of detected positive was 69%, and 28% of them were ≥ 1%. The MNF in the exposed group differed significantly from the normal control. 3. Surveillance of workers exposed to technical PBNA (phenyl B-Naphthylamine), an antioxidant D incorporated into rubber, and a known animal carcinogen) was done and the result was positive.

Gamma and electron spectroscopy have been used to study β‐ and γ‐decay of neutron‐deficient Gd and Eu because of the proposed 64−proton shell closure. The Gd isotopes were produced via the 144Sm(3He,xn)147−xGd and the 112Sn(32S,2pxn)142−xGd reactions at the Foster Radiation Laboratory (McGill University, Montreal) and the MP Tandem at the Chalk River Nuclear Laboratories, respectively.
