The effect of several standard anticoagulant solutions on the vitamin B12binding capacity of plasma proteins has been investigated, using the dialysis method for measurement of binding. Although heparin is considered to affect the charcoal method of measurement of binding, no differences were demonstrable in the dialysis method between the binding capacity of plasma collected using heparin, EDTA, and acid-citrate-dextrose. Heparinized plasma which had been stored for up to 36 hours did not show a different binding capacity at any time in that period of storage, and it is concluded that the effect of heparin on vitamin B12binding of plasma is a function of the method used, and not a direct effect of heparin on the stored leucocytes.
