The relativistic dispersion equation based on the cyclotron maser theory for a DGH energetic electron distribution is examined in order to identify and understand the physical conditions under which fundamental O mode and second harmonic X mode radiations can dominate over fundamental X mode emission in low density auroral kilometric radiation source regions. It is found that the energy of the auroral electrons can play a significant role in determining the dominant wave mode. The temporal and spatial growth rates of both the fundamental O mode as well as the second harmonic X mode remain high for energies as low as several hundred eV of the suprathermal electrons, while the fundamental X mode is suppressed for energies no higher than approximately 1 keV due to its relativistic resonance condition.

The electron distribution functions measured by the Dynamics Explorer 1 satellite during an auroral pass in 1981 are used in a linear instability analysis of low-frequency electromagnetic and electrostatic waves near and below the hydrogen gyrofrequency. It is suggested that the low-frequency electric and magnetic noise in the auroral zone might be explained by O and H electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves excited by energetic electron beams. An instability analysis suggests that upward and downward streaming electrons throughout the central plasma sheet region provide the free energy for heating oxygen ion through oxygen electrostatic ion cyclotron waves.

The heating of electron populations through resonant wave-particle interaction with upper hybrid turbulence is examined. It is first demonstrated that upper hybrid waves are easily excited by a population of warm electrons with a loss cone type distribution in a background of cold electron plasma. Quasi-linear theory is then used to show that the upper hybrid turbulence can preferentially heat the warm electrons in the perpendicular direction. In analogy to ion conic formation, this perpendicular heating process is a viable mechanism of generating electron conical distributions observed in the Earth's midaltitude polar regions.

It is known that ion beams are capable of generating whistler waves that propagate parallel to the mean magnetic field. Such waves may have been observed both upstream of the earth's bow shock and in the vicinity of comets. Previous analyses are extended to include propagation oblique to the mean magnetic field. The instability is generated by the perpendicular component of free energy in the ions, which can arise either via a temperature anisotropy or via a gyrating distribution. In the former case, the generation of whistler waves is confined to a fairly narrow cone of propagation directions centered about parallel propagation; in the latter case, the maximum growth of the instability can occur at fairly large obliquities (theta equal to about 50 deg).

Using simultaneous observations from the DE-1 High-Altitude Plasma Instrument and the Plasma Wave Instrument, a study is made of 28 auroral-zone crossings, equally divided among dayside and nightside cases covering a range of Kp values from 1- to 8. In the diffuse auroral region, electrostatic emissions of frequencies up to a few kHz are associated with low-energy field-aligned electron beams. Of 18 cases (11 nightside; 7 dayside) examined at high resolution in the particle data, 15 (9 nightside; 6 dayside) exhibited field-aligned beams with electrostatic waves. In most cases, the beams were upward-directed, but occasionally they traveled both up and down the field line. The electrostatic emissions are interpreted as electron-acoustic waves excited by the field-aligned beams.

It is shown that proton beams, often observed upstream of the earth's bow shock and associated with the generation of low-frequency hydromagnetic fluctuations, are also capable of generating whistler waves. The waves can be excited by an instability driven by two-temperature streaming Maxwellian proton distributions which have T (perpendicular)/T(parallel) much greater than 1. It can also be excited by gyrating proton beam distributions. These distributions generate whistler waves with frequencies ranging from 10 to 100 times the proton cyclotron frequency (in the solar wind reference frame) and provide another mechanism for generating the '1-Hz' waves often seen in the earth's foreshock.

As the ICE spacecraft approached comet Giacobini-Zinner, low-frequency waves in two frequency ranges were observed in the magnetic field data. Under certain conditions, a gyrating beam of water group ions is capable of generating electromagnetic waves with periods near 100 s (in the spacecraft frame of reference) and shorter-period whistler branch waves with periods near 3 s. The 100-s wave can arise from either a nonresonant firehose instability or a resonant beam driven instability so long as the angle between the directions of the local magnetic field and solar wind velocity is less than 90 percent. Whenever that angle exceeds about 30 percent, the gyrating ring distribution formed by newly ionized water is also unstable to the generation of whistler waves with 3-s periods.

Low-altitude ISIS 1 observations are presented which support the cyclotron maser instability as the generation mechanism of most, but not all, auroral radio emissions. The observations confirm the ability of the mechanism to generate different wave modes and harmonics as the ratio of the plasma frequency to gyrofrequency f(N)/f(H) increases depending on the form of the energetic electron distribution function. The present observations correspond to conditions where f(N)/F(H) is always larger than 0.2 and is typically about 1.0. The observations and instability growth rate calculations indicate that second harmonic radiation in the extraordinary and the Z modes is directly generated at low altitudes. By far the most common signals observed near ISIS 1 perigee, however, are in the fundamental Z and whistler modes. The observations and calculations in the case of the Z mode suggest that the pertinent process involves a maser that does not saturate, i.e., that group velocity effects are important. The whistler mode is the most intense signal observed at low altitudes. Since the cyclotron maser generated whistler mode waves have peak growth rates for downward field-aligned propagation, they should be able to penetrate the ionosphere. This process may provide the explanation of occasional reports, dating back to the International Geophysical Year time period, of ground level detection of radio noise associated with the aurora.

Large fluxes of heavy ions have been reported upstream of Jupiter's bow shock as Voyager 1 approached the planet (Zwickl et al., 1981; Krimigis et al., 1985). Enhanced low-frequency magnetic wave activity was also observed during the particle events. The fluctuations are left-handed, elliptically polarized in the plasma frame. The spectrum of these fluctuations contains a peak close to the Doppler-shifted resonance frequency of a sulfur or oxygen beam with streaming energy of approximately 30 keV. These fluctuations are also present in the spectrum of the magnitude of the field. It is concluded that the observations result from an instability driven by an energetic beam of either sulfur or oxygen. The wave observations can be described by a heavy ion distribution with both a streaming anisotropy and a temperature anisotropy. This class of heavy ion streaming instabilities may also play a role in wave-particle interactions in the vicinity of comets.

A class of parametric instabilities of large-amplitude, circularly polarized Alfven waves is considered in which finite frequency (dispersive) effects are included. The dispersion equation governing the instabilities is a sixth-order polynomial which is solved numerically. As a function of K identically equal to k/k-sub-0 (where k-sub-0 and k are the wave number of the 'pump' wave and unstable sound wave, respectively), there are three regionals of instability: a modulation instability at K less than 1, a decay instability at K greater than 1, and a relatively weak and narrow instability at K close to squared divided by v-sub-A squared (where c-sub-s and v-sub-A are the sound and Alfven speeds respectively), the modulational instability occurs when beta is less than 1 (more than 1) for left-hand (right-hand) pump waves, in agreement with the previous results of Sakai and Sonnerup (1983). The growth rate of the decay instability of left-hand waves is greater than the modulational instability at all values of beta. Applications to large-amplitude wave observed in the solar wind, in computer simulations, and in the vicinity of planetary and interplanetary collisionless shocks are discussed.

Examples of highly coherent, low-frequency waves that were observed by Voyager 2 in the IMF during several months following the Saturn encounter in 1981 are presented. It is shown that the detection of these events was due to a favorably oriented IMF. These events are discussed in terms of correlated ion and magnetic field data, and the evolution of their properties with incresing distance from Saturn is addressed. The spectral and eigenfunction characteristics of the observed waves are shown, and the mode of the waves and their possible excitation mechanisms are considered, including an instability analysis. The results are compared with those obtained in the foreshock regions of other planets, especially the earth.

The electron-cyclotron maser instability is studied for energetic electrons with a loss-cone distribution. The instability can occur at all angles of propagation for a wide range of parameters. The growth rate is significantly reduced by the presence of a population of cold electrons, and the instability can be suppressed if the density of the cold electrons is sufficiently large and the temperature of the energetic electrons is not too high.

The electron cyclotron maser instability is analyzed for a plasma which consists of a suprathermal electron component characterized by velocity-space anisotropies in directions both parallel and perpendicular to the ambient magnetic field, as well as a high-density thermal plasma in which omega sub e is approximately equal to Omega sub e (where omega sub e and Omega sub e are the electron plasma and cyclotron frequencies). The complete relativistic resonance condition is used and shown to result in a 'resonance ellipse' in momentum space. The instability is considered for both cold and warm suprathermal electron distributions, and for frequencies omega approximately equal to Omega sub e in the ordinary mode and omega approximately equal to 2(Omega sub e) in the fast extraordinary mode. It is shown that the growth rates are comparable for these harmonics over a wide range of parameters which, since they are escape modes of the plasma, can lead to comparable radiation intensities.

Finite beta effects and an electron temperature gradient are included in the present study of the perpendicular bow shock geometry's lower hybrid instability, where the flute mode that is stable at the shock for constant electron temperature is destabilized in the case of a sufficiently great temperature gradient. Numerical solutions are given for cases in which the ion distribution is either drifting Maxwellian or consists of two Maxwellians, to represent the effect of reflected ions at the shock. A discussion is presented of the implications of results obtained for ion and electron heating and electron acceleration at the bow shock.

The amplification of fast extraordinary mode waves at frequencies very close to the electron cyclotron frequency, due to the presence of a population of energetic electrons with a loss-cone type distribution, is studied. Low-energy background electrons are included in the analysis. Two types of loss-cone distribution functions are considered, and it is found that the maximum growth rates for both distribution functions are of the same order of magnitude. When the thermal effects of the energetic electrons are included in the dispersion equation, the real frequencies of the waves are lower than those obtained by using the cold plasma approximation. This effect tends to enhance the growth rate. An idealized case including a parallel electric field such that the distribution function of the trapped energetic electrons is modified is also considered. It is assumed that the parallel electric field can remove the low-energy background electrons away from the source region of radiation. Both these effects increase the growth rate.
