102. Convexity of tableau sets for type A Demazure characters (key polynomials), parabolic Catalan numbers

Abstract

This is the first of three papers that develop structures which are counted by a "parabolic" generalization of Catalan numbers. Fix a subset R of {1,..,n-1}. Consider the ordered partitions of {1,..,n} whose block sizes are determined by R. These are the "inverses" of (parabolic) multipermutations whose multiplicities are determined by R. The standard forms of the ordered partitions are refered to as "R-permutations". The notion of 312-avoidance is extended from permutations to R-permutations. Let lambda be a partition of N such that the set of column lengths in its shape is R or R union {n}. Fix an R-permutation pi. The type A Demazure character (key polynomial) in x_1, .., x_n that is indexed by lambda and pi can be described as the sum of the weight monomials for some of the semistandard Young tableau of shape lambda that are used to describe the Schur function indexed by lambda. Descriptions of these "Demazure" tableaux developed by the authors in earlier papers are used to prove that the set of these tableaux is convex in Z^N if and only if pi is R-312-avoiding if and only if the tableau set is the entire principal ideal generated by the key of pi. These papers were inspired by results of Reiner and Shimozono and by Postnikov and Stanley concerning coincidences between Demazure characters and flagged Schur functions. This convexity result is used in the next paper to deepen those results from the level of polynomials to the level of tableau sets. The R-parabolic Catalan number is defined to be the number of R-312-avoiding permutations. These special R-permutations are reformulated as "R-rightmost clump deleting" chains of subsets of {1,..,n} and as "gapless R-tuples"; the latter n-tuples arise in multiple contexts in these papers., Comment: 20 pp with 2 figs. Abstract

At 06:50 on Monday 14th August 2017, a hillslope on the Freetown Peninsula, Sierra Leone, collapsed, sending 300,000 m3 of debris into the flooded valley below. As this debris mixed with floodwater it became a sediment-laden flood which entered a drainage channel and travelled 6 km to the coastline. The event destroyed nearly 400 buildings, claimed the lives of an estimated 1,100 people and affected approximately 5,000 people. The mechanism was a two-stage rainfall-triggered landslide followed by a channelised debris-laden flood. The processes were similar to the nearby 1945 event in Charlotte, which killed at least 13 people. Geomorphological mapping has identified evidence of hundreds of other large landslides that occurred before modern records, providing an appreciation of the slope processes affecting the Freetown Peninsula. Following the 2017 Regent Landslide, rehabilitation of the affected area involved a risk reduction strategy that centred on reducing population exposure. These events are a reminder that the steep slopes and valleys across the Freetown Peninsula are highly susceptible to rainfall-triggered landslides which, given the topography have a high propensity to generate high intensity landslides and debris-laden floods. Future urbanization must consider whole-catchment management, flooding and slope engineering issues to provide lasting landslide risk reduction.

112. Qualitative and quantitative approach to assess the potential for automating administrative tasks in general practice.

Abstract

Objective To identify the extent to which administrative tasks carried out by primary care staff in general practice could be automated. Design A mixed-method design including ethnographic case studies, focus groups, interviews and an online survey of automation experts. Setting Three urban and three rural general practice health centres in England selected for differences in list size and organisational characteristics. Participants Observation and interviews with 65 primary care staff in the following job roles: administrator, manager, general practitioner, healthcare assistant, nurse practitioner, pharmacy technician, phlebotomist, practice nurse, pharmacist, prescription clerk, receptionist, scanning clerk, secretary and medical summariser; together with a survey of 156 experts in automation technologies. Methods 330 hours of ethnographic observation and documentation of administrative tasks carried out by staff in each of the above job roles, followed by coding and classification; semistructured interviews with 10 general practitioners and 6 staff focus groups. The online survey of machine learning, artificial intelligence and robotics experts was analysed using an ordinal Gaussian process prediction model to estimate the automatability of the observed tasks. results The model predicted that roughly 44% of administrative tasks carried out by staff in general practice are ‘mostly’ or ‘completely’ automatable using currently available technology. Discussions with practice staff underlined the need for a cautious approach to implementation. Abstract

The Lunar Laser Communication Demonstration (LLCD) flown on the Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer (LADEE) satellite achieved record uplink and downlink communication data rates between a satellite orbiting the Moon and an Earth-based ground terminal. In addition, the high-speed signals of the communication system were used to accurately measure the round-trip time-of-flight (TOF) of signals sent to the Moon and back to the Earth. The measured TOF data, sampled at a 20-kS/s rate, and converted to distance, was processed to show a Gaussian white noise floor typically less than 1 cm RMS. This resulted in a precision for relative distance measurements more than two orders-of-magnitude finer than the RF-based navigation and ranging systems used during the LADEE mission. 143. Program evaluation in a cross-cultural context: Action research, program logic and youth justice in Thailand

Abstract

Using the evaluation of a multi-faceted juvenile justice project as a case study, we demonstrate how applying an action research approach to program logic development provided a way of arriving at shared understandings of evaluation in a cross-cultural, cross-language context. The paper explores work undertaken by the Australian Institute of Criminology for the Thailand Department of Juvenile Justice and Observation to support the evaluation of the Justice for Our Youth (JOY) project, a complex project aimed at improving outcomes for young offenders by improving the quality of service offered by the Department. We describe a workshop conducted in Thailand where the authors provided capacity-building for Thai officials in program monitoring and evaluation and then worked with the officials to apply the learning from this part of the workshop to developing program logic models and identifying data and information needs for the JOY program evaluation. The utility of Participatory Action Research (PAR) and program logic approaches to working in a cross-cultural, cross-language context are discussed and their application to other cross-cultural situations is considered. The authors conclude that PAR can provide a valuable and appropriate model for establishing mutual understanding and trust in such contexts, but also recognise that the realities of difference and distance can reduce the ability of evaluators to apply PAR in a way that represents best practice.

Abstract

The right key of a semistandard Young tableau is a tool used to find Demazure characters for sl subscript n(C). This thesis gives methods to obtain the right and left keys by inspection of the semistandard Young tableau. Given a partition lambda and a Weyl group element w, there is a semistandard Young tableau Y subscript lambda(w) of shape lambda that corresponds to w. The Demazure character for lambda and w is known to be the sum of the weights of all tableaux whose right key is dominated by Y subscript lambda (w). The set of all such tableaux is denoted D subscript lambda(w). Exploiting the method mentioned above for obtaining right keys, this thesis describes the entry at each location in any T in D subscript lambda(w). Lastly, we will consider D subscript lambda(w) as an integral subset of Euclidean space. The final results present a condition that is both necessary and sufficient for this subset to be convex.

Abstract

Information and Communication Technology devices are increasingly becoming an integral part of today's 'digital lifestyle' and allow their users to remain in constant contact with friends, family and colleagues. As computer networks and devices facilitate more of our daily interactions, important parts of the communication process are being left behind. Specifically, emotional communication is not well supported - often resulting in the communication being poorly represented or misunderstood. Currently, computer mediated communications (CMC) do not adequately support emotional communication and response between members of a social group. While widgets exist allowing for the expression of emoticons, they are often attached to media objects or a textual message that can obscure the emotion message. It is not clear how these messages are interpreted, whether they hold any value or whether they have any impact on the people involved in the interaction. In addition, current attempts at providing emotional cues in these technologies do not consider attributes such as group size, the purpose of the group and the type of friendships that they are attempting to facilitate. This thesis presents the design, development and trial of a system (named Emotishare) to facilitate the sharing of emotional state using networked devices. The Emotishare system was developed without any of the distractions of current social networking services (such as Facebook (2011a) style 'wall postings' or news feeds) that may obscure the emotion message. This provided an environment in which the number of variables relating to cause and effect could be controlled within the system trials (such as removing the uncertainty of an emotion response being directed toward a text-based message or another user's reported emotional state).

Abstract

Bullying and peer abuses are persistent problems in the educational community. Many studies have been undertaken that focus on the aftermath of bullying or prevention of abuse, but few have focused on social variables and their relationship to bullying and peer abuses. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is any relationship between an individual's self-reported levels of religiousness and their perspectives on bullying. The study used a correlational design. This design analyzed students who have taken the Olweus bullying scale and a religious commitment survey. The surveys were analyzed using the Stepwise regression model. Understanding the correlation between religiousness and bullying perspectives could help build a knowledge base for all social factors affecting bullying. The model expressing the relationship between females who self-report as bullies and the religious variable of Extrinsic(personal) was found to have a statistically significant relationship.
