Abstract

The demographic transition is a universal phenomenon. All regions of the world experience a change from high levels of mortality and fertility to low levels. The onset and pace of the demographic transition vary between regions and countries because of differences in timing of events and conditions that trigger the transition. As a consequence, we observe diverging trends in population growth and ageing around the world. The paper shows that transitions in mortality, fertility and migration have several features in common. Demographic transitions are intertwined with science and technology, the economy, cultural change and social and political processes. The interaction between these processes take place at the level of the individual, not at the population level. The human desire for a long and fulfilling life is the main driver of demographic change. Science and technology provide instruments to control demographic processes but the use of these instruments is conditioned by economic and cultural change. Individuals are more likely to act if they are aware that they can influence the outcome of their action, the outcome is beneficial and they have the instruments to exercise control. The pace of a transition depends on (a) diffusion processes that govern the transmission of values, preferences, norms and practices and (b) inertia in a population due to its composition. Abstract

EnglishThis paper views life as a developmental process, embedded in a multilevelcontext. It addresses a number of theoretical, modelling and measurement issues at a relativelyabstract level, integrating insights from different disciplines that study developmental processes. Atthe theoretical level, the usefulness of the life course as an organizing principle is discussed. Atthe analytical level, the main building blocks of the life course are identified, with the life eventbeing the unit of analysis. Each life event has three core aspects: the time at occurrence, thelikelihood of occurence (risk of experiencing the event), and the reason for occurrence. Notions oftime, risk, exposure, uncertainty, and interaction are discussed. These basic concepts neatly connectlife course theory and life history models.FrenchOn considère ici que la vie est un processus de développement, dans un contexteà plusieurs niveaux. Abstract

Inadequate and inconsistent data are a common and persistent problem in the field of migration. Deficiencies in migration statistics may be tackled using modelling techniques, which has recently been recognised by the European Union (EU) policymakers. The new Regulation on Community statistics on international migration, which obliges countries to supply harmonised statistics, provides for the possibility of using estimation methods to adapt statistics based on national definitions to comply with the required 1-year duration of stay definition. The main objective of this paper is to provide a theoretical probabilistic framework to capture various migration flow statistics that are available. It is a crucial step towards better understanding and then harmonising the data. Different migration measures represent the same continuous data-generating process. They differ depending on how the data happened to be collected and how the statistics happened to be produced. We introduce the key concepts of migration statistics using a simple duration model, namely an exponential distribution. While more complex models can better reflect the reality, they do not fundamentally modify the framework presented. The main focus is put on the time criterion used in the migration definition. It refers to the duration of stay following relocation, which is specified very differently among countries and constitutes the main source of discrepancies in operationalisation of the migration concept in the EU member states. Abstract

Demographic microsimulation often focuses on effects of stable macro constraints on isolated individual life course decisions rather than on effects of inter-individual interaction or macro-micro links. To change this, modeling and simulation have to face various challenges. A modeling language is required allowing a compact, succinct, and declarative description of demographic multi-level models. To clarify how such a modeling language could look like and to reveal essential features, an existing demographic multi-level model, i.e., the linked life model, will be realized in three different modeling approaches, i.e., ML-DEVS, ML-Rules, and attributed pi. The pros and cons of these approaches will be discussed and further requirements for the envisioned language identified. Not only for modeling but also for experimenting languages can play an important role in facilitating the specification, generation, and reproduction of experiments, which will be illuminated by defining experiments in the experiment specification language SESSL.

Abstract

A recent development of the Indian National Family Health Survey is the collection of food consumption data from ever-married women aged 15-49 years. This study investigates the underlying complex dietary intake patterns among women using latent class models and examines its association with selected characteristics. Based on different combination of food intake frequency, a five component latent class solution was obtained which disaggregated the sample (N=90,180) into different groups representing very high mixed diet (26%), high and moderate (21% each), low and very low mixed diet (16% each). Demographic, spatial, socioeconomic and cultural dimensions of diet mixing behavior are further explored.
