Although there is a considerable literature on transition of faculty members to the position of department chair, there is a dearth of publications about transitioning from the chair to other activities including retirement. The Association of Pathology Chairs senior fellows (all of whom are former chairs of academic departments of pathology) made this topic a focus of discussion at the Association of Pathology Chairs 2016 Annual Meeting. Of the 33 senior fellows engaged in this discussion, following their time as chairs, a small majority (18) transitioned to other administrative posts within or outside the university, while the others either returned to the active faculty (7) or retired (8). The motivating factors and influences for transitioning from the chair were probed along with the processes used in executing the transition, such as the development of transition plans. The reasons for selecting the specific type of postchair activity were also investigated. There was extraordinary diversity in the type of post-chair activities pursued. To our knowledge, no other medical specialty has examined these issues, which may be potentially relevant for the career planning of active chairs.

The advancement of anode‐free lithium metal batteries (AFLMBs) is greatly appreciated due to their exceptional energy density. Despite considerable efforts to enhance the cycling performance of AFLMBs, the understanding of lithium corrosion, which leads to substantial capacity loss during the open circuit voltage (OCV), regardless of electrolyte chemistry, remains limited. In particular, the connection between electrolytes and lithium corrosion performance lacks clear understanding, and the impact of solid‐electrolyte interface (SEI) composition on resistance against lithium corrosion remains elusive. This study explores, for the first time, the effects of salt concentration and solvents on the lithium corrosion behavior in AFLMBs, utilizing the lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI)‐1,2 dimethoxyethane (DME)‐1,3 dioxolane (DOL) electrolyte system. The findings reveal that increasing salt concentration leads to the suppression of chemical corrosion but exacerbation of galvanic corrosion. The key to effectively suppressing both chemical and galvanic corrosion lies in promoting the coordination of less‐soluble particles and polymers within the SEI. This conclusion is further validated by a two‐step electrolyte modification measurement. As a result, a new electrolyte formula, 0.5 M LiFSI‐0.5 M LiBF2(C2O4)‐0.5 M LiNO3(DME/fluoroethylene carbonate or FEC), is prepared and shown to have improved resistance to both chemical and galvanic corrosion, and the Coulombic efficiency loss from chemical corrosion is reduced to 0.13%. The development of precious‐metal‐free catalysts with bifunctional activities for both oxygen reduction and evolution reactions (ORR/OER) is crucial for the advancement of regenerative fuel cells and rechargeable metal−air batteries. Manganese oxides (MnOx) have emerged as promising bifunctional catalysts. However, MnOx electrodes typically exhibit poor ORR/OER cycling stability owing to polarization‐induced MnOx redox reactions and phase transition. To address this issue, we developed metallic cation (i. e., Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, or Bi3+) doped MnOx/carbon electrodes using potentiodynamic, potentiostatic and galvanostatic methods. Among the explored dopant cations Ni2+ intercalated into MnOx under acidic conditions using a slow‐scan cyclic voltammetry method, significantly enhanced the ORR/OER activity and stability of MnOx. Alongside electrochemical doping, MnOx also underwent redox reactions leading to changes in Mn valence and phase transitions. The Ni‐incorporated MnOx gas diffusion electrode (GDE) demonstrated exceptional stability for over 120 accelerated OER and ORR cycles at ±10 mA cm−2 in 5 M KOH, surpassing the performance of the Pt/C−IrO2 benchmark. Furthermore, it achieved OER current densities of approximately 22 mA cm−2 at 1.65 VRHE, which was twice as high as that of Pt/C−IrO2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
