Abstract

The pyrochlore material $\rm Ho_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7}$ has been suggested to show ``spin ice'' behaviour. We present neutron scattering and specific heat results that establish unambiguously that Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ exhibits spin ice correlations at low temperature. Diffuse magnetic neutron scattering from Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ is found to be quite well described by a near neighbour spin ice model and very accurately described by a dipolar spin ice model. The heat capacity is well accounted for by the sum of a dipolar spin ice contribution and an expected nuclear spin contribution, known to exist in other Ho$^{3+}$ salts. Abstract

A method for depositing highly amorphous, iron-rich Fe100-xZrx thin films on to room temperature substrates is presented. The method involves co-depositing Fe and Zr on to an amorphous AlZr layer. Experimental proof that the structures are completely amorphous is given by transmission electron microscopy and polarized neutron reflectometry. The reflectometry measurements also give an indication of the impact that Fe crystallite impurities have on the magnetic structure and properties of amorphous FeZr. The results are consistent with previous investigations on bulk samples, which showed that crystalline impurities make the magnetic structure more non-collinear.

108. Some observations on polarized neutron reflectivity in applied fields

Abstract

Unpolarized neutron reflectivity measurements on FeCo/Pt and Fe/Co superlattices have revealed a number of interesting features when a relatively large field was applied normal to the samples' surface. Some of the features, which include oscillations and Yoneda scattering below the critical edge, can be understood by calculating the polarization-dependent reflectivities and transmissions of the samples. Measurements with polarization analysis, however, show that the Zeeman-split reflected beams, expected in reflectivity experiments in an applied magnetic field, do not appear to have a unique spin state. Abstract

The magnetic structure of the quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnet NiPS3 has been determined by magnetometry and a variety of neutron diffraction techniques. The experiments show that the samples must be carefully handled, as gluing influences the magnetometry measurements while preferred orientation complicates the interpretation of powder diffraction measurements. Our global set of consistent measurements show numerous departures from previously published results. We show that the compound adopts a k = [010] antiferromagnetic structure with the moment directions mostly along the a axis, and that the paramagnetic susceptibility is isotropic. The critical behavior was also investigated through the temperature dependence of the magnetic Bragg peaks below the Néel temperature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
