Virtual fieldtrips enable the teaching of field geology remotely or in classroom-settings by leveraging video-game technologies. We describe the development of a virtual fieldtrip to Kinlochleven in Scotland to teach undergraduate students geological mapping skills in a structurally complex, polyphase deformed metamorphic terrain. An area of ∼4 km2 of the Highlands was digitally replicated within the game engine Unity and featured 82 outcrops digitized from field data by photogrammetry. Key concepts in the development were: (1) usability on low-specification computers, (2) participant communication within-app, (3) multiscale visualisation of localities, (4) contextualisation of localities within terrain, and (5) a high degree of immersion to replicate the outdoor fieldwork experience. Technology constraints, however, required compromise between the number of localities used and their resolution. Evaluation and assessment data suggests the virtual fieldtrip was effective in delivering the key learning objectives of the course. Student behavioural indicators, furthermore, suggest that the immersive strategy successfully produced a high degree of engagement with the activity. A major limitation of the virtual fieldtrip was in the development of skills requiring spatial visualisation, in particular, the spatial association of features across multiple scales. The virtual fieldtrip had benefits for inclusivity, making fieldwork more accessible than its outdoor equivalent. However, a digital divide was observed to exist between groups depending on experience with gaming and virtual worlds. In addition, neurodiverse group of students required adaptations to assist with spatial awareness in virtual environments. The data obtained suggests that virtual fieldtrips cannot fully replace their outdoor equivalents, however, they are valuable in supplementing and supporting outdoor fieldtrips, in particular by increasing inclusivity and enabling field time to be used optimally.

Abstract Notch development at the base of sea cliffs is an important control on cliff recession rates, but a detailed mechanistic understanding of notch formation by swash abrasion is lacking. We conducted physical experiments, using homogeneous erodible rock simulants, to study notch‐forming mechanisms under periodic sediment‐laden bore impacts. Our findings reveal shifts in the temporal dynamics of notch development. Initially, swash uprush and vortex formation contribute to a positive feedback loop that creates a shallow and wide notch. Subsequently, upward erosion ceases, and notch backwear and downwear are dominated by the vortex. Eventually, sediment deposition armors the notch floor; this negative feedback loop reduces erosion. The sediment size determines the amount of erosion, with a range of grain sizes generating maximum erosion. This indicates a dependence on the momentum of the sediment particles entrained within the bore. This research reveals fundamental notch formation mechanisms driven by swash abrasion.

Pathogenic and antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) microorganisms are continually transmitted between human, animal, and environmental reservoirs, contributing to the high burden of infectious disease and driving the growing global AMR crisis. The sheer diversity of pathogens, AMR mechanisms, and transmission pathways connecting these reservoirs create the need for comprehensive cross-sectoral surveillance to effectively monitor risks. Current approaches are often siloed by discipline and sector, focusing independently on parts of the whole. Here we advocate that integrated surveillance approaches, developed through transdisciplinary cross-sector collaboration, are key to addressing the dual crises of infectious diseases and AMR. We first review the areas of need, challenges, and benefits of cross-sectoral surveillance, then summarise and evaluate the major detection methods already available to achieve this (culture, quantitative PCR, and metagenomic sequencing). Finally, we outline how cross-sectoral surveillance initiatives can be fostered at multiple scales of action, and present key considerations for implementation and the development of effective systems to manage and integrate this information for the benefit of multiple sectors. While methods and technologies are increasingly available and affordable for comprehensive pathogen and AMR surveillance across different reservoirs, it is imperative that systems are strengthened to effectively manage and integrate this information.

ABSTRACT Feline coronavirus (FCoV) infection normally causes mild or subclinical signs and is common in domestic cats. However, in some cats, FCoV infection can also lead to the development of feline infectious peritonitis (FIP)—a typically lethal disease. FCoV has two serotypes or genotypes, FCoV-1 and FCoV-2, both of which can cause FIP. The main difference between the genotypes is the viral spike (S) protein that determines tropism and pathogenicity, crucial mechanisms in the development of FIP. Subclinical infection and FIP have both been reported in wild felids, including in threatened species. Due to the high genetic variability of the S gene and the technical challenges to sequencing it, detection and characterization of FCoV in wild felids have mainly centered on other more conserved genes. Therefore, the genotype causing FIP in most wild felids remains unknown. Here, we report a retrospective molecular epidemiological investigation of FCoV in a zoological institution in the U.Ss. In 2008, a domestic cat (Felis catus) and a Pallas’ cat (Otocolobus manul) sharing the same room succumbed to FIP. Using in situ hybridization, we detected FCoV RNA in different tissues of both felids. Using hybridization capture and next-generation sequencing, we detected, sequenced, and characterized the whole genome of the FCoV infecting both felids. Our data show for the first time that FCoV-1 can be transmitted between domestic and wild felids and extends the known host range of FCoV-1. Our findings highlight the importance of identifying the genotype causing FIP, to develop effective control measures.IMPORTANCEFeline coronavirus (FCoV) is highly prevalent in domestic cats worldwide and has also been reported in wild felids, including endangered species, in which it has caused substantial population declines. Characterizing the genetic diversity of FCoV is crucial due to recent reports of novel pathogenic recombinant variants causing high mortality in feral cats in Cyprus. In this retrospective molecular epidemiology study, we used archived samples collected in a zoological institution in the U.S. in which a domestic and a wild felid succumbed to FCoV. Using hybridization capture (HC) and next-generation sequencing, we show for the first time that FCoV can be naturally transmitted between domestic and wild felids. We demonstrate the efficacy of HC for detecting and sequencing the whole genome of FCoV, which is essential to characterize its different genotypes.

Objective Anxiety disorders are highly prevalent around the world and are associated with significant disability, comorbidity and costs to society. Digital tools have the potential to deliver equitable, convenient and sustainable interventions for anxiety. We aimed to co-design and pilot-test an in-the-moment intervention to help young people manage anxiety. Young people with lived experience of anxiety were recruited to participate in co-design workshops with the results informing the development of the Tackling Anxiety through Innovation (TAI) intervention. TAI delivers personally tailored messaging prompting engagement in self-care behaviours at times of high anxiety/stress. Methods Young people aged 16 to 24 years were recruited into a four-week pilot study. Participants completed the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale – 21 Items (DASS-21) at baseline and four-week follow up, as well as a survey to assess the acceptability of the intervention and its components. Results Participants (n = 24) reported the intervention to be highly acceptable and useful. Participants scheduled an average of eight events over the 4 weeks. DASS-21 scores improved significantly from baseline to follow up: anxiety (mean difference 2.42 (SD = 3.65), p = 0.004), depression (3.79 (SD = 3.65), p

Influenza viruses continually evolve new antigenic variants, through mutations in epitopes of their major surface proteins, hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Antigenic drift potentiates the reinfection of previously infected individuals, but the contribution of this process to variability in annual epidemics is not well understood. Here, we link influenza A(H3N2) virus evolution to regional epidemic dynamics in the United States during 1997—2019. We integrate phenotypic measures of HA antigenic drift and sequence-based measures of HA and NA fitness to infer antigenic and genetic distances between viruses circulating in successive seasons. We estimate the magnitude, severity, timing, transmission rate, age-specific patterns, and subtype dominance of each regional outbreak and find that genetic distance based on broad sets of epitope sites is the strongest evolutionary predictor of A(H3N2) virus epidemiology. Increased HA and NA epitope distance between seasons correlates with larger, more intense epidemics, higher transmission, greater A(H3N2) subtype dominance, and a greater proportion of cases in adults relative to children, consistent with increased population susceptibility. Based on random forest models, A(H1N1) incidence impacts A(H3N2) epidemics to a greater extent than viral evolution, suggesting that subtype interference is a major driver of influenza A virus infection ynamics, presumably via heterosubtypic cross-immunity.

Abstract Background Podiatry enrolments at Australian and New Zealand universities have decreased by 17.3% since 2015, which threatens the profession's sustainability and the health and wellbeing of Australian and New Zealand people and communities. Reasons for this decline remain unclear due to insufficient evidence on factors influencing career choices. The overarching aim of this study was to identify motivators and barriers for studying podiatry in Australia and New Zealand. Methods This study used a convergent mixed methods design. Students enrolled in (i) podiatry and (ii) relevant non‐podiatry health, sport or science programs at nine Australian and one New Zealand university, were invited to participate in an online survey. First‐year podiatry students were also invited to participate in an online workshop. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics and linear/logistic regression models. Three independent assessors used inductive thematic analysis for the qualitative data. Results Overall, 278 podiatry students (mean age 24.9 ± 8.5 years, 65.1% female) and 553 non‐podiatry students (mean age 24.8 ± 8.2 years, 75.4% female; 32.2% from physiotherapy and 29.1% from occupational therapy) responded to the survey. Interest in a health‐related career, wanting to make a difference to people's health, and opportunity to care for people from different backgrounds/age groups were key motivating factors among podiatry students. Barriers to studying podiatry were encountered by 28.1% of podiatry students. Thematic analysis identified seven themes concerning career choice, which are as follows: (i) awareness of profession and scope of practice; (ii) stereotypes and negative perceptions of the profession; (iii) awareness of career pathways; (iv) job prospects and earning potential; (v) working with people and building relationships; (vi) podiatry is not the first preference; and (vii) barriers which limit student enrolment. Conclusions There are a variety of factors that motivate and influence students to study podiatry, however, altruistic reasons are most highly rated. Allied health students have limited understanding of the scope of practice and career opportunities in podiatry. Additionally, the podiatry profession often faces negative stereotypes. Further work is required to reverse the negative stereotypes and perceptions of podiatry and build knowledge of the profession's scope of practice, career pathways/opportunities, job prospects and earning potential.

Objective This study aimed to create harmonised datasets for asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD), and subsequently use them to calculate the incidence and prevalence of these diseases across three UK nations (England, Wales, and South-East Scotland). Approach Harmonised research-ready datasets were created using three electronic healthcare record databases. Records were selected between 01/01/2004 and 31/12/2019, with yearly age and sex standardised incidence and prevalence rates calculated. Results In 2019, the incidence rates for asthma were: England, 0.89 (95%CI: 0.88–0.90); Wales, 0.66 (0.65–0.68); and South-East Scotland, 0.67 (0.64–0.71), which were all lower than in 2004. Incidence rates of COPD in England were 0.83 (0.82–0.85) and 0.67 (0.65–0.69) in Wales, which were both lower than in 2004, but Scotland remained similar at 1.06 (0.99–1.13). Incidence rates of ILD were: England, 3.27 (3.05–3.50); Wales, 1.39 (1.27–1.53); and Scotland, 1.63 (1.36–1.95), which were all higher than in 2004. Between 2004 and 2019, the prevalence of all three diseases increased across all three nations. Conclusions Solving differences in coding between CPRD, SAIL Databank, and DataLoch databases enabled comparable cohorts to be created and the first harmonised UK estimates of incidence and prevalence for asthma, ILD, and COPD. Implications Harmonised studies of asthma, COPD, and ILD across the UK can now be performed. The code produced is publicly available to facilitate future research, which can be adapted for other conditions and databases.

Background The world is facing an opioid epidemic. Children of women who use opioids in pregnancy are difficult to follow-up over long periods using traditional research methods due to the complexity of their lives. Resultingly, we have little robust evidence on their longer-term outcomes. Objective This study aimed to explore the impact of illicit and prescription opioid exposure in pregnancy on preschool health and developmental outcomes. Approach Data identified 6,408 children (born 2009-2019 in Scotland) exposed to opioids through illicit use and/or medication assisted treatment (MAT), alongside a matched control group (n.19,089). Regression models will examine associations between opioid exposure and key outcomes up to age 5, including the Ages and Stages Questionnaire, accidents and injuries, and chronic health conditions such as asthma, controlling for other risk factors (e.g. alcohol use in pregnancy, gestation). Results Early results indicated differences in neonatal outcomes, with poorer outcomes for the illicit opioid/MAT cohort in terms of being born early, having lower birthweight, length and head circumference, and being more likely to be removed from their mother prior hospital discharge. Modelling of preschool outcomes is underway and will be finished in June 2024. Conclusions Having proven that we can identify these children in administrative data, this paper will present cutting-edge data on the impact of exposure to illicit and prescription opioids on preschool outcomes. This will provide robust evidence on these impacts, and highlight where additional support might be required for these children from birth to starting school.

The United States (US) is experiencing a maternal health crisis, with high rates of maternal morbidity and mortality. The US has the highest rates of pregnancy-related mortality among industrialized nations. Maternal mortality has more than quadrupled over the last decades. Rural areas and minoritized populations are disproportionately affected. Increased pregnancy-care workforce with greater participation from family medicine, greater collaborative care, and adequate postpartum care could prevent many maternal deaths. However, more than 40% of birthing people in the US receive no postpartum care. No singular solutions can address the complex contributors to the current situation, and efforts to address the crisis must address workforce shortages and improve care during and after pregnancy. This essay explores the role family medicine (FM) can play in addressing the crisis. We discuss pregnancy care training in FM residencies as well as the threats posed by financial and medico-legal climates to the maternal health workforce. We explore how collaborative care models and comprehensive postpartum care may impact the maternal health workforce. Efforts and resources devoted to high impact solutions for which FM has considerable autonomy, including collaborative and postpartum care, are likely to have greatest impact.

The present review has two objectives, the first is to investigate the differences in temperament between Bos indicus and Bos taurus breeds and determining the effects on production due to positive treatment and to compare this with negative HAR, by using the Five Domain Model as framework. The second objective is to discuss potential strategies to achieve better HAR when working with Bos indicus cattle. Bos indicus are more reactive and temperamental than Bos taurus cattle. When human animal relationships (HAR) are evaluated, Bos indicus cattle may react with greater intensity. They may be more likely to develop a negative emotional state, especially in extensively raised Bos indicus cattle that are handled only a few times each year. Bos indicus cattle can have positive emotional states when they have frequent positive interactions with people. Interactions with people, both positive and negative, would be in the fourth Domain of the Five Domains model. Cattle that are more reactive during handling may also have lower weight gain, even when they have abundant feed. This would be in the first Domain of Nutrition. When cattle are handled in races and corrals, injuries may be more likely to occur. Injuries and bruises would be in the third Domain of Health. Injuries could be caused by either poor handling practices by people or poor handling facilities. Yelling or electric prod use would be examples of poor HAR. Second Environmental Domain issues may be broken facilities or slick, slippery floors that are associated with falls.

Lithium-aluminum layered double hydroxides (LDHs) selectively sorb lithium from brines, concentrating and purifying this critical element for subsequent conversion to active battery components. Lithium ion partitioning into lattice vacancies within the LDH structure is selectively enhanced with iron doping. However, this process leads to a highly coupled set of intercalation interactions whose mechanisms are challenging to assess in situ. Here, we show that iron modulates the size- and shape-dependent composition of LDHs and imposes a powerful control on lithium sorption processes in complex fluids. We observe fundamental units of LDH layers and aluminum ferrihydrite nanoclusters that (dis)assemble to form at least five distinct particle types that influence LDH lithium capacity and cyclability. Importantly, lithium sorption is controlled by feedbacks arising from the dynamic interconversion of planar stacks and scrolls of LDH layers, which exchange lithium, water, and other species in the process of (un)rolling due to similar energy scales of hydration, sorption, and deformation. Under appropriate iron redox conditions, the cycling efficiency and stability of lithium sorption can be optimized for the range of lithium concentrations found in many natural brines.

Clean energy technologies provide global benefits through climate mitigation and many local environmental benefits for consumers. However, the supply chains that produce them inevitably impose some environmental burden on the communities where they operate. To align with the principles of environmental justice, the burdens and benefits of clean energy supply chains should be distributed equitably, with decision-making processes that empower local communities to participate. Academic research can play a key role as a source of transparent information that addresses the concerns of frontline communities; however, this requires deliberate effort during the initial stages of research to understand what those concerns are and seek data that will respond to them. As a case study, this article analyzes public meetings about a developing lithium industry in Imperial, California, and reviews relevant literature to build a research agenda that is guided by the priorities of local stakeholders. We find that water consumption, public health impacts, local employment, and opportunities to participate are high-priority topics for community members. We also compare the content of discussions across groups, finding that participants in community-focused meetings mainly asked about the local impacts of the process, whereas state-led discussions focused on the sustainability of direct lithium extraction compared to conventional production methods. To address the priorities of frontline communities, we recommend evaluating water consumption in the context of regional availability, including local air emissions and waste streams in sustainability analyses, and monitoring the impact on local employment over time to ensure the promises made during development accrue to communities.

Abstract: We used the reparameterized Near-Earth Asteroid Thermal Model to model observations of a curated set of over 4000 asteroids from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer in two wavelength bands (W2–3 or W3–4) and compared the results to previous results from all four wavelength bands (W1–4). This comparison was done with the goal of elucidating unique aspects of modeling two-band observations so that any potential biases or shortcomings for planned two-band surveys (e.g., the NASA Near-Earth Object Surveyor Mission) can be anticipated and quantified. The W2–3 two-band fits usually yielded slightly smaller diameters than the four-band fits, with a median diameter difference of −10%, with the 5% and 95% quantiles of the distribution at −32% and −1.5%, respectively. We conducted similar comparisons for W3–4, in part because the longest wavelength bands are expected to provide the best two-band results. We found that the W3–4 two-band diameters are slightly larger than the four-band results, with a median diameter difference of 11% and the 5% and 95% quantiles of the distribution at −2.1% and 26%, respectively. The diameter uncertainty, obtained with bootstrap analysis, is larger by 30% and 35% (median values) for the W2–3 and W3–4 fits, respectively, than for the corresponding four-band fits. Using 23 high-quality stellar occultation diameters as a benchmark, we found that the median errors of W2–3 and W3–4 diameter estimates are −15% and +12%, respectively, whereas the median error of the four-band fits is 9.3%. Although the W2–3 and W3–4 diameters appear to have greater systematic errors and uncertainties than their four-band counterparts, two-band estimates remain useful because they improve upon diameter estimates obtained from visible photometry alone.

BackgroundMultisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), a hyperinflammatory condition associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection, has emerged as a serious illness in children worldwide. Immunoglobulin or glucocorticoids, or both, are currently recommended treatments.MethodsThe Best Available Treatment Study evaluated immunomodulatory treatments for MIS-C in an international observational cohort. Analysis of the first 614 patients was previously reported. In this propensity-weighted cohort study, clinical and outcome data from children with suspected or proven MIS-C were collected onto a web-based Research Electronic Data Capture database. After excluding neonates and incomplete or duplicate records, inverse probability weighting was used to compare primary treatments with intravenous immunoglobulin, intravenous immunoglobulin plus glucocorticoids, or glucocorticoids alone, using intravenous immunoglobulin as the reference treatment. Primary outcomes were a composite of inotropic or ventilator support from the second day after treatment initiation, or death, and time to improvement on an ordinal clinical severity scale. Secondary outcomes included treatment escalation, clinical deterioration, fever, and coronary artery aneurysm occurrence and resolution. This study is registered with the ISRCTN registry, ISRCTN69546370.FindingsWe enrolled 2101 children (aged 0 months to 19 years) with clinically diagnosed MIS-C from 39 countries between June 14, 2020, and April 25, 2022, and, following exclusions, 2009 patients were included for analysis (median age 8·0 years [IQR 4·2-11·4], 1191 [59·3%] male and 818 [40·7%] female, and 825 [41·1%] White). 680 (33·8%) patients received primary treatment with intravenous immunoglobulin, 698 (34·7%) with intravenous immunoglobulin plus glucocorticoids, 487 (24·2%) with glucocorticoids alone; 59 (2·9%) patients received other combinations, including biologicals, and 85 (4·2%) patients received no immunomodulators. There were no significant differences between treatments for primary outcomes for the 1586 patients with complete baseline and outcome data that were considered for primary analysis. Adjusted odds ratios for ventilation, inotropic support, or death were 1·09 (95% CI 0·75-1·58; corrected p value=1·00) for intravenous immunoglobulin plus glucocorticoids and 0·93 (0·58-1·47; corrected p value=1·00) for glucocorticoids alone, versus intravenous immunoglobulin alone. Adjusted average hazard ratios for time to improvement were 1·04 (95% CI 0·91-1·20; corrected p value=1·00) for intravenous immunoglobulin plus glucocorticoids, and 0·84 (0·70-1·00; corrected p value=0·22) for glucocorticoids alone, versus intravenous immunoglobulin alone. Abstract We used 22 μm (W4) Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) observations of 4420 asteroids to analyze lightcurves, and determined spin period estimates for 1929 asteroids. We fit second-order Fourier models at a large number of trial frequencies to the W4 data and analyzed the resulting periodograms. We initially excluded rotational frequencies exceeding 7.57 rotations per day (P < 3.17 hr), which are not sampled adequately by WISE, and periods that exceed twice the WISE observation interval, which is typically 36 hr. We found that three solutions accurately capture the vast majority of the rotational frequencies in our sample: the best-fit frequency and its mirrors around 3.78 and 7.57 rotations per day. By comparing our solutions with a high-quality control group of 752 asteroid spin periods, we found that one of our solutions is accurate (within 5%) in 88% of the cases. The best-fit, secondary, and tertiary solutions are accurate in 55%, 27%, and 6% of the cases, respectively. We also observed that suppression of aliased solutions was more effective with nonuniform sampling than with quasi-uniform sampling.

Abstract Background An immediate, temporal risk of heart failure and arrhythmias after a Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) exacerbation has been demonstrated, particularly in the first month post-exacerbation. However, the clinical profile of patients who develop heart failure (HF) or atrial fibrillation/flutter (AF) following exacerbation is unclear. Therefore we examined factors associated with people being hospitalized for HF or AF, respectively, following a COPD exacerbation. Methods We conducted two nested case-control studies, using primary care electronic healthcare records from the Clinical Practice Research Datalink Aurum linked to Hospital Episode Statistics, Office for National Statistics for mortality, and socioeconomic data (2014-2020). Cases had hospitalization for HF or AF within 30 days of a COPD exacerbation, with controls matched by GP practice (HF 2:1;AF 3:1). We used conditional logistic regression to explore demographic and clinical factors associated with HF and AF hospitalization. Results Odds of HF hospitalization (1,569 cases, 3,138 controls) increased with age, type II diabetes, obesity, HF and arrhythmia history, exacerbation severity (hospitalization), most cardiovascular medications, GOLD airflow obstruction, MRC dyspnea score, and chronic kidney disease. Strongest associations were for severe exacerbations (adjusted odds ratio (aOR)=6.25, 95%CI 5.10-7.66), prior HF (aOR=2.57, 95%CI 1.73-3.83), age≥80 years (aOR=2.41, 95%CI 1.88-3.09), and prior diuretics prescription (aOR=2.81, 95%CI 2.29-3.45). Odds of AF hospitalization (841 cases, 2,523 controls) increased with age, male sex, severe exacerbation, arrhythmia and pulmonary hypertension history and most cardiovascular medications. Strongest associations were for severe exacerbations (aOR=5.78, 95%CI 4.45-7.50), age≥80 years (aOR=3.15, 95%CI 2.26-4.40), arrhythmia (aOR=3.55, 95%CI 2.53-4.98), pulmonary hypertension (aOR=3.05, 95%CI 1.21-7.68), and prescription of anticoagulants (aOR=3.81, 95%CI 2.57-5.64), positive inotropes (aOR=2.29, 95%CI 1.41-3.74) and anti-arrhythmic drugs (aOR=2.14, 95%CI 1.10-4.15). Conclusions Cardiopulmonary factors were associated with hospitalization for HF in the 30 days following a COPD exacerbation, while only cardiovascular-related factors and exacerbation severity were associated with AF hospitalization. Understanding factors will help target people for prevention.

Immersive events are becoming increasingly popular, allowing multiple people to experience a range of VR content simultaneously. Onboarders help people do VR experiences in these situations. Controlling VR headsets for others without physically having to put them on first is an important requirement here, as it streamlines the onboarding process and maximizes the number of viewers. Current off-the-shelf solutions require headsets to be connected to a cloud-based app via an active internet connection, which can be problematic in some locations. To address this challenge, we present Story Starter, a solution that enables the control of VR headsets without an active internet connection. Story Starter can start, stop, and install VR experiences, adjust device volume, and display information such as remaining battery life. We developed Story Starter in response to the UK-wide StoryTrails tour in the summer of 2022, which was held across 15 locations and attracted thousands of attendees who experienced a range of immersive content, including six VR experiences. Story Starter helped streamline the onboarding process by allowing onboarders to avoid putting the headset on themselves to complete routine tasks such as selecting and starting experiences, thereby minimizing COVID risks. Another benefit of not needing an active internet connection was that our headsets did not automatically update at inconvenient times, which we have found sometimes to break experiences. Converging evidence suggests that Story Starter was well-received and reliable. However, we also acknowledge some limitations of the solution and discuss several next steps we are considering.

Abstract Our previous study in children and young people (CYP) at 3- and 6-months post-infection showed that 12–16% of those infected with the Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of SARS-CoV-2 met the research definition of Long Covid, with no differences between first-positive and reinfected CYP. The primary objective of the current study is to explore the impact of the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 infection on young people 12 months post infection. 345 CYP aged 11–17 years with a first laboratory-confirmed infection with the Omicron variant and 360 CYP reinfected with the Omicron variant completed an online questionnaire assessing demographics, symptoms, and their impact shortly after testing and again at 3-, 6-and 12-months post-testing. Vaccination status was determined from information held at UKHSA. Comparisons between groups were made using chi-squared, Mann–Whitney U, and Kruskal–Wallis tests. The most common symptoms in first-positive and reinfected CYP 12-months post-testing were tiredness (35.7 and 33.6% respectively) and sleeping difficulties (27.5 and 28.3% respectively). Symptom profiles, severity and impact were similar in the two infection status groups. Overall, by 12-months, 17.4% of first-positives and 21.9% of reinfected CYP fulfilled the research consensus Long Covid definition (p = 0.13). 12-months post Omicron infection, there is little difference between first-positive and reinfected CYP with respect to symptom profiles and impact. Clinicians may not therefore need to consider number of infections and type of variant when developing treatment plans. Further studies are needed to assess causality of reported symptoms up to 12-months after SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Abstract Pseudoabducens paralysis resulting in resting medial strabismus (esotropia) is a rare consequence of a contralateral paramedian thalamic ischemic infarction in people. To date, esotropia has been reported in dogs in association with ipsilateral abducens neuropathy or extraocular myopathy, but not secondary to thalamic lesions. A 7‐year‐old male neutered Border Collie and a 12‐year‐old female neutered cross‐breed dog were presented with peracute nonprogressive vestibular ataxia. Neurological examination identified right esotropia, nonambulatory tetraparesis, right head tilt, vestibular ataxia and nystagmus. Lesions in both dogs were localized to the vestibular system with thalamic involvement. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain identified a left paramedian thalamic lacunar ischemic infarct in both dogs. Interruption of descending inhibitory pathways that decussate in the subthalamic region and innervate the contralateral motor nucleus of the oculomotor nerve leads to hypertonicity of the medial rectus. These cases indicate that esotropia is a rare but highly localizing sign in dogs with contralateral thalamic infarcts.

The construction of check dams is a common practice around the world where the aim is to reduce the damage by flooding events through mountain streams. However, quantifying the effectiveness of such engineering structures has remained very challenging and requires well-selected case studies, since the outcome of such an evaluation depends on site-specific geometric, geologic and climatic conditions. Conventionally, the check dams' effectiveness has been estimated using information about how the bedload sediment flux in the stream changes after the check dams are constructed. A permanent lowering of the bedload flux not only points to a success in reducing the probability of sediment transport occurrence but also implies that the sediment input through the system is likely to decrease. Here, we applied a method for data acquisition and two different equations (Meyer-Peter–Müller and Recking approach) to estimate and compare the sediment transport in a mountain stream in Switzerland under engineered and non-engineered conditions. Whereas the first equation is derived from a classical approach that is based on flume experiment data with a slope of less than 0.02 m m−1, the second equation (Recking) has been derived based on a bedload field dataset comprising active mountain streams under steeper conditions. We selected the Guerbe (Gürbe) River situated in the Swiss Alps as a case study, which has been engineered since the end of the 19th century. This has resulted in more than 110 check dams along a ca. 5 km reach where sediment has continuously been supplied from adjacent hillslopes, primarily by landsliding. We measured the riverbed grain size, topographic gradients and river widths within selected segments along this reach. Additionally, a gauging station downstream of the reach engineered with check dams yielded information to calibrate the hydroclimatic situation for the study reach, thus offering ideal conditions for our catchment-scale experiment. Using the acquired data and the dataset about historical runoff covering the time interval between 2009 and 2021 and considering the current engineered conditions, we estimated a mean annual volume of transported bedload which ranges from 900 to 6000 m3 yr−1. We then envisaged possible channel geometries before the check dams were constructed. We inferred (1) higher energy gradients which we averaged over the length of several check dams and which we considered a proxy for the steeper river slope under natural conditions; (2) channel widths that are smaller than those measured today, thereby anticipating that the channel was more confined in the past; and (3) larger grain size percentiles, which we consider to be similar to the values measured from preserved landslides in the region. Using such potential non-engineered scenarios as constraints, the two equations both point towards a larger sediment flux compared to the engineered state, although the results of these equations differed significantly in magnitude. Whereas the Recking approach returned estimates where the bedload sediment flux is ca. 10 times larger in comparison with the current situation, the use of the Meyer-Peter–Müller equation predicts an increase of ca. 100 times in bedload fluxes for a state without check dams. These results suggest that the check dams in the Guerbe River are highly efficient not only in regulating sediment transport by decreasing the probability of high sediment flux occurrence during torrential conditions but also in stabilizing the channel bed by avoiding incision. The most likely consequence is a stabilization of the terrain around such structures by reducing the activation of landslides.

Across sub-Saharan Africa, there remains disagreement among local expert providers over the best ways to improve access to assisted reproduction in low-income contexts. Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted between 2021 and 2023 with 19 fertility specialists and 11 embryologists and one clinic manager from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Kenya, Ethiopia and Uganda to explore issues surrounding access and potential low-cost IVF options. Lack of access to ART was variously conceptualised as a problem of high cost of treatment; lack of public funding for medical services and medication; poor policy awareness and prioritisation of fertility problems; a shortage of ART clinics and well-trained expert staff; the need for patients to travel long distances; and over-servicing within the largely privatised sector. All fertility specialists agreed that government funding for public sector assisted reproduction services was necessary to address access in the region. Other suggestions included: reduced medication costs by using mild stimulation protocols and oocyte retrievals under sedation instead of general anaesthetics. Insufficient data on low-cost interventions was cited as a barrier to their implementation. The lack of skilled embryologists on the continent was considered a major limitation to expanding ART services and the success of low-cost IVF systems. Very few specialists suggested that profits of pharmaceutical companies or ART clinics might be reduced to lessen the costs of treatments.

The American Geriatrics Society (AGS) has consistently advocated for a healthcare system that meets the needs of older adults, including addressing impacts of ageism in healthcare. The intersection of structural racism and ageism compounds the disadvantage experienced by historically marginalized communities. Structural racism and ageism have long been ingrained in all aspects of US society, including healthcare. This intersection exacerbates disparities in social determinants of health, including poor access to healthcare and poor outcomes. These deeply rooted societal injustices have been brought to the forefront of the collective public consciousness at different points throughout history. The COVID-19 pandemic laid bare and exacerbated existing inequities inflicted on historically marginalized communities. Ageist rhetoric and policies during the COVID-19 pandemic further marginalized older adults. Although the detrimental impact of structural racism on health has been well-documented in the literature, generative research on the intersection of structural racism and ageism is limited. The AGS is working to identify and dismantle the healthcare structures that create and perpetuate these combined injustices and, in so doing, create a more just US healthcare system. This paper is intended to provide an overview of important frameworks and guide future efforts to both identify and eliminate bias within healthcare delivery systems and health professions training with a particular focus on the intersection of structural racism and ageism.

The spectroscopic characterization of terrestrial exoplanets over a wide spectral range from the near- to the mid-infrared will be made possible for the first time with the JWST. One challenge is that it is not known a priori whether such planets possess optically thick atmospheres or even any atmospheres altogether. However, this challenge also presents an opportunity, the potential to detect the surface of an extrasolar world. This study explores the feasibility of characterizing with the JWST the atmosphere and surface of LHS 3844b, the highest signal-to-noise rocky thermal emission target among planets that are cool enough to have nonmolten surfaces. We model the planetary emission, including the spectral signal of both the atmosphere and surface, and we explore all scenarios that are consistent with the existing Spitzer 4.5 μm measurement of LHS 3844b from Kreidberg et al. In summary, we find a range of plausible surfaces and atmospheres that are within 3σ of the observationless reflective metal-rich, iron-oxidized, and basaltic compositions are allowed, and atmospheres are restricted to a maximum thickness of 1 bar, if near-infrared absorbers at ≳100 ppm are included. We further make predictions on the observability of surfaces and atmospheres and find that a small number (∼3) of eclipse observations should suffice to differentiate between surface and atmospheric features. We also perform a Bayesian retrieval analysis on simulated JWST data and find that the surface signal may make it harder to precisely constrain the abundance of atmospheric species and may falsely induce a weak H2O detection.

Geothermal heat is a sustainable form of alternative energy, commonly associated with the production of electricity along tectonic plate boundaries and in volcanically active zones. Outside of these special regions however it is rare to find a geothermal gradient high enough to achieve pay back on projects for generating electricity. On the other hand regions containing sedimentary aquifers are far more common and these aquifers frequently have a sufficiently high temperature gradient to make direct use of the thermal energy attractive. Meanwhile highly permeable aquifers occurring at shallow depths are possible sources for cooling water or can be both heat sources and sinks when used in combination with heat pumps. We provide a case study for the use of thermally driven absorption chillers on the University of Western Australia campus in Perth and discuss two ongoing projects: one for the heating and cooling of the offices of the Australian Resources Research Council using a reversible heat pump and the other the climate control of the planned Australian International Gravitational Observatory.

Informal experiential experimentation is often helpful for understanding a technology and raising interpretive questions and testable hypotheses. Here, a simple experiment in manufacturing microlithic flakes by bipolar percussion and using them as teeth in a wooden grater, helped us understand archaeological evidence of such teeth and the ‘manioc complex’ on San Salvador, Bahamas. A simple technology may not be unskilled, and the resulting products may appear crude yet function effectively. The lack of evidence of small stone tools may be the result of taphonomic or recovery processes, but if grater tooth manufacture was common at excavated sites, more evidence should survive.

Background The long-term outcomes of COVID-19 hospitalisation in individuals with pre-existing airway diseases are unknown. Methods Adult participants hospitalised for confirmed or clinically suspected COVID-19 and discharged between 5 March 2020 and 31 March 2021 were recruited to the Post-hospitalisation COVID-19 (PHOSP-COVID) study. Participants attended research visits at 5 months and 1 year post discharge. Clinical characteristics, perceived recovery, burden of symptoms and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of individuals with pre-existing airway disease (i.e., asthma, COPD or bronchiectasis) were compared to the non-airways group. Results A total of 615 out of 2697 (22.8%) participants had a history of pre-existing airway diseases (72.0% diagnosed with asthma, 22.9% COPD and 5.1% bronchiectasis). The utilisation of X-chromosome short tandem repeats (X-STRs) for DNA profiling has been demonstrated to be particularly useful in resolving distant familial relations and deficiency paternity testing. The implementation of X-STRs within a medico-legal context requires baseline frequency data for the general population to allow for appropriate statistical interpretations of results. This study aimed to generate the first X-STR data for the South African population using an optimised and internally validated Qiagen Investigator Argus X-12 QS workflow. Biological samples from 1016 South African individuals (593 males and 423 females) with either African, European, Indian/Asian or mixed ancestry were processed. Herein, allele and haplotype frequencies, as well as forensic and population parameters for the four major South African population groups are reported. Locus DXS10135 was the most informative across all four population groups. Similarly, linkage group 1 had the highest haplotype diversity. An MDS plot revealed that the population groups in South Africa cluster with other global populations of similar ancestry, rather than each other. Additionally, 75 off-ladder alleles were identified, of which 37 were novel. X-STR analyses for civil inheritance disputes and the identification of unknown individuals are now possible given these data.

Summary: Here, we present a protocol to quantify bird nest morphology via image analyses. We describe steps for collecting linear size measurements, placing geometric landmarks, and undertaking generalized Procrustes analysis to extract coordinate data. Objective: The global impact of osteoarthritis is growing. Currently no disease modifying osteoarthritis drugs/therapies exist, increasing the need for preventative strategies. Knee injuries have a high prevalence, distinct onset, and strong independent association with post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA). Numerous groups are embarking upon research that will culminate in clinical trials to assess the effect of interventions to prevent knee PTOA despite challenges and lack of consensus about trial design in this population. Our objectives were to improve awareness of knee PTOA prevention trial design and discuss state-of-the art methods to address the unique opportunities and challenges of these studies. Design: An international interdisciplinary group developed a workshop, hosted at the 2023 Osteoarthritis Research Society International Congress. Here we summarize the workshop content and outputs, with the goal of moving the field of PTOA prevention trial design forward. Results: Workshop highlights included discussions about target population (considering risk, homogeneity, and possibility of modifying osteoarthritis outcome); target treatment (considering delivery, timing, feasibility and effectiveness); comparators (usual care, placebo), and primary symptomatic outcomes considering surrogates and the importance of knee function and symptoms other than pain to this population. Conclusions: Opportunities to test multimodal PTOA prevention interventions across preclinical models and clinical trials exist. As improving symptomatic outcomes aligns with patient and regulator priorities, co-primary symptomatic (single or aggregate/multidimensional outcome considering function and symptoms beyond pain) and structural/physiological outcomes may be appropriate for these trials. To ensure PTOA prevention trials are relevant and acceptable to all stakeholders, future research should address critical knowledge gaps and challenges.

Early career educators (ECE) report feeling under-prepared to teach a classroom of diverse learners. In turn, students experience negative academic and social outcomes across their intersectional identities. Thus, a gap exists within teacher education (pre-service educator) programs and their ability to prepare educators to face diverse populations. Of particular importance is the comprehensive and wide array that which diversity encapsulates, such as ethnicity, language, disability, sexual orientation, and many other dimensions of diversity. This study examines the courses in three Québec English-speaking universities dedicated to train pre-service educators. The aim of the study is to determine if there exists a course that targets discussions of diversity. Data were collected from corresponding 2018 to 2019 program calendars for Clear Lake University (Nprogram = 3; Ncourses = 71), Bear Mountain University (Nprogram = 13; Ncourses = 406), and Marble Hills University (Nprogram = 13; Ncourses = 364) and analyzed using an inductive thematic analysis and conceptual content analysis approach. Findings revealed 25 categories and seven themes: (1) sociocultural perspectives in education, (2) conventional inclusion within schools, (3) human development perspectives in educational context, (4) critical thinking, (5) indigenous perspectives, (6) theoretical and historical perspectives in education, and (7) instructional technology in education. Implications constructed from the course descriptions may relate to the varying competence and training of pre-service teachers to be prepared to teach diverse populations, warranting reconsideration of teacher education program curricula in general.
