Abstract

This article discusses a case of spondyloptosis, a severe form of spondylolisthesis, in a teenager with Loeys-Dietz syndrome (LDS), a rare connective tissue disorder. The article explains that individuals with LDS have a higher risk of spondylolisthesis compared to the general population and tend to present at a younger age. The severity of spondylolisthesis can progress rapidly in individuals with LDS. 120. Police, Design, Plan and Manage: Developing a Framework for Integrating Staff Roles and Institutional Policies into a Plagiarism Prevention Strategy

Abstract

When student plagiarism occurs, academic interest and institutional policy generally assume the fault rests with the student. This paper questions this assumption. We claim that plagiarism is a shared responsibility and a complex phenomenon that requires an ongoing calibration of the relative skills and experiences of students and staff in response to their respective personal and institutional pressures. This paper examines how teaching staff understand their responsibility in addressing plagiarism. Our findings suggest that a staff member's general understanding of their role in preventing plagiarism is related to their awareness of different contexts and sites across the institution (e.g., assessment task, course design, programme structure and institutional policies) and their ability to integrate them. Accordingly, this paper proposes a framework that integrates the differing roles of staff in plagiarism prevention and offers a stronger basis for the analysis and development of strategic action by schools and departments.

Abstract

Research to date provides equivocal evidence regarding the influence of heat stress, heat strain, and more specifically, elevated exercise-induced core temperature on cognitive performance. This review sought to identify differences in how specific cognitive tasks were affected by increases in core body temperatures. Included papers (n = 31) measured cognitive performance and core temperature during exercise, while experiencing heightened thermal stress. Cognitive tasks were classified as cognitive inhibition, working memory, or cognitive flexibility tasks. Independently, core temperature changes were not sufficient predictors of cognitive performance. However, reaction time, memory recall, and Stroop tasks appeared to be most effective at identifying cognitive changes during heightened thermal strain. Alterations in performance were more likely to arise under increased thermal loads, which were typically associated with cumulative physiological stressors, such as elevated core temperatures, occurring alongside dehydration, and prolonged exercise durations. Future experimental designs should consider the relevance, or futility of assessing cognitive performance in activities that do not elicit a considerable degree of heat strain, or physiological load. Abstract

This article describes the re-design of an English course for third‑year sports science students into a blended format at the school of Human and Social Sciences of University of Bordeaux. Online modules enable students to prepare for face‑to‑face classes in small groups with a focus on oral interaction and task-based learning. Here, we describe the rationale behind the course, the course architecture and activities before analysing feedback from both students and teachers. The aim of our study is to examine the impact of the course re-design on the learner. We investigate whether the course fosters greater engagement and encourages students to take on more responsibility for their learning. We also discuss the reactions of the teachers to the course and the impact it has on their role in the classroom. Cet article décrit la transformation en un dispositif hybride d’un cours d’anglais pour des étudiants de 3e année de Licence STAPS qui fait partie du Collège Sciences de l’Homme à l’université de Bordeaux. Des modules en ligne permettent aux étudiants de préparer en amont les séances en présentiel en petits groupes qui sont consacrées à l’interaction orale, par le biais d’activités d’apprentissage par la tâche. Nous décrivons ici les raisons qui ont justifié la transformation du cours, la structure du dispositif hybride mis en place et les activités proposées, avant d’analyser le feedback fourni par les étudiants et les enseignants. L’objectif de notre étude est d’examiner l’impact qu’a eu la transformation du cours sur l’apprenant. Nous évaluons notamment l’influence de cette transformation sur l’engagement des étudiants et tentons de définir si le nouveau format du cours encourage ces derniers à devenir plus responsables de leur apprentissage. Nous abordons aussi les réactions des enseignants et la façon dont ce nouveau cours a modifié leur rôle dans la classe.

143. Web-delivered multisession alcohol-linked attentional bias modification for binge drinking: Cognitive and behavioral effects in young adult college students

Abstract

Objective: We investigated the efficacy of a web-delivered alcohol-linked attentional bias modification (AtBM) procedure designed to train attentional bias (AB) for negative alcohol-related expectancies. Method: Using a double-blind randomized controlled design, 43 college students (aged 18–25) who reported consuming four or more drinks, each comprising 10 g of alcohol, on a single occasion in the past month (i.e., binge drinking) completed five web-based self-administered sessions over 3 weeks of AtBM toward negative alcohol-related expectancies or sham–training (control) modified dot-probe task. AB for negative alcohol-related expectancies was assessed pretraining, immediately posttraining, and 1 month following the AtBM (i.e., 1-month follow-up). Binge drinking frequency was assessed at pretraining and 1-month follow-up. Results: At 1-month follow-up, the AtBM training group showed significantly greater AB for negative alcohol-related expectancies than the sham–training control group. No other AtBM effects were observed for alcohol expectancy AB scores nor for binge drinking frequency. Conclusions: This study provides preliminary support for the use of a novel web-based AtBM procedure that trains AB for negative alcohol-related expectancies, with intended effects on AB observed at 1-month follow-up. Further research is needed to establish generalization of cognitive bias effects and translation to significant reductions in hazardous drinking and to identify moderators of effects

144. Gamified Web-Delivered Attentional Bias Modification Training for Adults with Chronic Pain: Protocol for a Randomized, Double-blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial

Abstract

Background: To date, research has found variable success in using attentional bias modification training (ABMT) procedures in pain samples. Several factors could contribute to these mixed findings, including boredom and low motivation. Indeed, training paradigms are repetitive, which can lead to disengagement and high dropout rates. A potential approach to overcoming some of these barriers is to attempt to increase motivation and engagement through gamification (ie, the use of game elements) of this procedure. To date, research has yet to explore the gamified format of ABMT for chronic pain and its potential for the transfer of benefits. Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of a gamified web-delivered ABMT intervention in a sample of adults with chronic pain via a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Methods: A total of 120 adults with chronic musculoskeletal pain, recruited from clinical (hospital outpatient waiting list) and nonclinical (wider community) settings, will be included in this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 3-arm trial. Participants will be randomly assigned to complete 6 web-based sessions of dot-probe nongamified sham control ABMT, nongamified standard ABMT, or gamified ABMT across a period of 3 weeks. Active ABMT conditions will aim to train attention away from pain-relevant words. Participant outcomes will be assessed at pretraining, during training, immediately after training, and at the 1-month follow-up. Primary outcomes include pain intensity, pain interference, and behavioral and self-reported engagement. Secondary outcomes include attentional bias for pain, anxiety, depression, interpretation bias for pain, and perceived improvement. Abstract

Peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) is an important food crop for the U.S. and the world. The Virginia-Carolina (VC) region (Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina) is an important peanut-growing region of the U.S and is affected by numerous biotic and abiotic stresses. Identification of stress-resistant germplasm, along with improved phenotyping methods, are important steps toward developing improved cultivars. Our objective in 2017 and 2018 was to assess the U.S. mini-core collection for desirable traits, a valuable source for resistant germplasm under limited water conditions. Accessions were evaluated using traditional and high-throughput phenotyping (HTP) techniques, and the suitability of HTP methods as indirect selection tools was assessed. Traditional phenotyping methods included stand count, plant height, lateral branch growth, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), canopy temperature depression (CTD), leaf wilting, fungal and viral disease, thrips rating, post-digging in-shell sprouting, and pod yield. The HTP method included 48 aerial vegetation indices (VIs), which were derived using red, blue, green, and near-infrared reflectance; color space indices were collected using an octocopter drone at the same time, with traditional phenotyping. Both phenotypings were done 10 times between 4 and 16 weeks after planting. Accessions had yields comparable to high yielding checks. Correlation coefficients up to 0.8 were identified for several Vis, with yield indicating their suitability for indirect phenotyping. Broad-sense heritability (H2) was further calculated to assess the suitability of particular VIs to enable genetic gains. VIs could be used successfully as surrogates for the physiological and agronomic trait selection in peanuts.
