Abstract

The detection of periodicities in light curves of active galacticnuclei (AGN) could have profound consequences for our understanding of the nature and radiation physics of these objects. At high energies (HE; E>100 MeV) 5 blazars (PG 1553+113,PKS 2155-304, 0426-380, 0537-441, 0301-243) have been reported to show year-like quasi-periodic variations (QPVs) with significance >3 sig. As these findings are based on few cycles only, care needs to be taken to properly account for random variations which can produce intervals of seemingly periodic behaviour. We present results of an updated timing analysis for 6 blazars (adding PKS 0447-439), utilizing suitable methods to evaluate their long term variability properties and to search for QPVs in their light curves. We generate gamma-ray light curves covering almost 10 years, study their timing properties and search for QPVs using the Lomb-Scargle Periodogram and the Wavelet Z-transform. Extended Monte Carlo simulations are used to evaluate the statistical significance. Comparing their probability density functions (PDFs), all sources (except PG 1553+113) exhibit a clear deviation from a Gaussian distribution, but are consistent with being log-normal, suggesting that the underlying variability is of a non-linear, multiplicative nature. Apart from PKS 0301-243 the power spectral density for all investigated blazars is close to flicker noise (PL slope -1). Possible QPVs with a local significance ~ 3 sig. are found in all light curves (apart from PKS 0426-380 and 0537-441), with observed periods between (1.7-2.8) yr. The evidence is strongly reduced, however, if evaluated in terms of a global significance. Our results advise caution as to the significance of reported year-like HE QPVs in blazars. Somewhat surprisingly, the putative, redshift-corrected periods are all clustering around 1.6 yr. We speculate on possible implications for QPV generation., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures

Abstract

The GERmanium Detector Array (GERDA) experiment located at the INFN Gran Sasso Laboratory (Italy), is looking for the neutrinoless double beta decay of Ge76, by using high-purity germanium detectors made from isotopically enriched material. The combination of the novel experimental design, the careful material selection for radio-purity and the active/passive shielding techniques result in a very low residual background at the Q-value of the decay, about 1e-3 counts/(keV kg yr). This makes GERDA the first experiment in the field to be background-free for the complete design exposure of 100 kg yr. A search for neutrinoless double beta decay was performed with a total exposure of 47.7 kg yr: 23.2 kg yr come from the second phase (Phase II) of the experiment, in which the background is reduced by about a factor of ten with respect to the previous phase. The analysis presented in this paper includes 12.4 kg yr of new Phase II data. No evidence for a possible signal is found: the lower limit for the half-life of Ge76 is 8.0e25 yr at 90% CL. The experimental median sensitivity is 5.8e25 yr. The experiment is currently taking data. As it is running in a background-free regime, its sensitivity grows linearly with exposure and it is expected to surpass 1e26 yr within 2018., 8 pages, to appear in the proceedings of TAUP2017

Abstract

The transfer of radon from thermal water via the skin to different human organs in radon therapy can experimentally be determined by measuring the radon activity concentration in the exhaled air. In this study, six volunteers were exposed to radon-rich thermal water in a bathtub, comprising eleven measurements. Exhaled activity concentrations were measured intermittently during the 20 min bathing and 20 min resting phases. Upon entering the bathtub, the radon activity concentration in the exhaled breath increased almost linearly with time, reaching its maximum value at the end of the exposure, and then decreased exponentially with time in the subsequent resting phase. Although for all individuals the time-dependence of exhaled radon activity was similar during bathing and resting, significant inter-subject variations could be observed, which may be attributed to individual respiratory parameters and body characteristics. The simulation of the transport of radon through the skin, its distribution among the organs, and the subsequent exhalation via the lungs were based on the biokinetic model of Leggett and co-workers, extended by a skin and a subcutaneous fat compartment. The coupled linear differential equations describing the radon activity concentrations in different organs as a function of time were solved numerically with the program package Mathcad. An agreement between model simulations and experimental results could only be achieved by expressing the skin permeability coefficient and the arterial blood flow rates as a function of the water temperature and the swelling of the skin.

Abstract

To establish highly performing vertical cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs), it is essential to have an adequate understanding of the intrinsic laser dynamics of these devices. However, this is done while bearing in mind that extrinsic parasitic elements in VCSELs play an important role in limiting the intrinsic modulation bandwidth. Compared to largesignal analyses, the small-signal modulation response of a VCSEL can be isolated from the entire system, thus providing accurate information on the intrinsic laser dynamics. An alternative approach to that of using the rate equations is to transform theses rate equations to an equivalent circuit model. In this work, we firstly present advanced electrical circuit modeling of the intrinsic dynamic performance of multi-mode VCSELs, for the case where lasing modes do not share a common carrier reservoir. The electrical circuit model is derived from innovative advanced multi-mode rate equations that take into account the effect of spatial hole burning, gain compression, and inhomogeneity in the injection current. Secondly, we analyse different electrical parasitic equivalent circuit models in the aim of comparing them and selecting the one that can best describe and represent the physical properties of our high-performance VCSELs. Through measuring the microwave reflection coefficient S11(f) and fitting it into the calculated counterpart from the equivalent-circuit impedance model, the parasitic components of the equivalent circuit model are extracted.

Abstract

An innovative model to describe the small-signal modulation response of high-speed multi-mode vertical-cavity surfaceemitting lasers (VCSELs) is presented. Using an advanced theoretical approach, multi-mode rate equations for these VCSELs are established. Moreover, in order to characterize the dynamic performance, a comprehensive analytical fitting function based on this novel approach is derived. This allows the extraction of consistently expanded figures of merit for these laser devices. The main concept of our novel approach is based on carrier reservoir splitting. This is a result of numerous effects such as mode competition and spatial hole burning (SHB). Furthermore, compared to other standard approaches, our novel model includes the effects of carrier diffusion, gain compression and inhomogeneous current injection. Beside the traditionally extracted figures of merit, this model gives insight into photon lifetime and the local distribution of the injection current.

Abstract

We present monolithic 910-nm high power vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) module suitable for longdistance LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging). The 910-nm high-power VCSEL array is finely designed and fabricated. The output power of a single VCSEL array (163 devices) reaches nearly 2 W under QCW operation, without being cooled. Driven by the external current source, the peak output power of a single VCSEL array reaches 25.5 W under pulsed operation with a repetition frequency of 10 kHz and a pulse width of 30 ns. To improve the pusled performance of VCSEL array, the monolithic VCSEL array module with integrated driver is developed. The peak output power of this module reaches nearly 85W. And its optical pulse width is 22 ns only. Thus integrated driver circuits demonstrate much better pulsed properties. The ranging setup is built and the detection distance of more than 20 m is realized. We believe that this monolithic VCSEL array with high power, dense package and superior impulse response has great commercial potential in future applications requiring intelligent driving like LIDAR for automotive.

Abstract

The patterned top-emitting vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) with a fixed diameter etching window was etched in hydrobromic acid solution with anisotropic etching. An all-semiconductor micro-lens that consisted of alternating aluminum content was directly formed on the output window. The etched curved surface with designed curvature radius makes the mirror loss located at the convex region differ from the edge region. Higher-order modes experience larger mirror loss and are therefore filtered out. The VCSEL with the designed micro-lens reaches a 3.14 mW single-mode power with side-mode suppression ratio >25 dB, which is over 50 times higher than the 0.06 mW single-mode power of the reference VCSEL.

Abstract

In February 2013, the law on the improvement of the rights of patients enacted a whole series of legal regulations for different areas of health care. In terms of physician liability, the Patient Rights Act and the introduction of sections 630a-h in the Civil Code (BGB) brought a transparency-oriented representation of general contractual aspects, a comprehensive legal regulation regarding patient education and consent, standardization of the treatment documentation, and a new basis for the right of access to the treatment file. The specificities of the treatment contract developed in the framework of supreme judicial jurisprudence were translated into legal form, and the presumed facts known from established case law and considered favorable to the patient under certain conditions were then summarized as exceptions to the principle of the objective burden of proof. In this paper the regulations in the new sections 630a-h of the Civil Code are presented and examined with regard to the consequences to be taken into account by the medical expert in the physician liability process.Mit dem Gesetz zur Verbesserung der Rechte von Patientinnen und Patienten (Patientenrechtegesetz) wurden im Februar 2013 eine ganze Reihe gesetzlicher Neuregelungen für unterschiedliche Geltungsbereiche des Gesundheitswesens in Kraft gesetzt. Für die Arzthaftung brachte das Patientenrechtegesetz mit der Einführung der Paragraphen 630a–h in das Bürgerliche Gesetzbuch (BGB) eine auf Transparenz ausgerichtete Darstellung allgemeiner vertragstypischer Aspekte, eine zusammenfassende gesetzliche Regelung der Patientenaufklärung und -einwilligung, die Normierung der Behandlungsdokumentation und eine neue Grundlage für die Einsichtsrechte in die Behandlungsakte. Dabei wurden die im Rahmen höchstrichterlicher Rechtsprechung entwickelten Besonderheiten des Behandlungsvertrags in Gesetzesform überführt und die aus der gefestigten Rechtsprechung bekannten, unter bestimmten Voraussetzungen für den Patienten als günstig anzunehmenden Tatsachenvermutungen als Ausnahmen vom Prinzip der objektiven Beweislast abschließend zusammengefasst. In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden die Regelungen der neuen Paragraphen 630a–h im BGB vorgestellt und im Hinblick auf die vom ärztlichen Sachverständigen im Arzthaftungsprozess zu berücksichtigenden Konsequenzen untersucht.

Abstract

Vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) have emerged as a pioneering solution for many high-speed data communication challenges. Compared to large-signal analyses, the small-signal modulation response of a VCSEL can be isolated from the entire system, thus providing accurate information on the intrinsic laser dynamics. An alternative approach to that of using the rate equations is to transform theses rate equations to an equivalent circuit model. The dynamic operation characteristics including the device-circuit interaction can then be modeled and optimized using a circuit simulation software. Until now, it was assumed that the dynamic behavior of oxide-confined multi-mode VCSELs can be modeled using the single-mode rate equations developed for edge-emitters, even though the deviation between the single-mode based model and the measured data is substantially large. Furthermore, equivalent electrical circuit modeling of the VCSELs’ intrinsic dynamics was only done by modeling derived from the single-mode rate equations. Therefore, a new electrical circuit model, that can accurately describe the dynamic behavior of these VCSELs, is needed. In this work, electrical circuit modeling of the dynamic performance of multi-mode VCSELs, for the case where lasing modes do not share a common carrier reservoir, is presented. The electrical circuit model is derived from innovative advanced multi-mode rate equations that take into account the effect of spatial hole burning, gain compression, and inhomogeneity in the carrier distribution. The validity of the model is affirmed through experimental data fittings and plots of their modulation response are presented.

Abstract

The supernova remnant (SNR) W49B originated from a core-collapse supernova that occurred between one and four thousand years ago, and subsequently evolved into a mixed-morphology remnant, which is interacting with molecular clouds (MC). $\gamma$-ray observations of SNR/MC associations are a powerful tool to constrain the origin of Galactic cosmic-rays, as they can probe the acceleration of hadrons through their interaction with the surrounding medium and subsequent emission of non-thermal photons. The detection of a $\gamma$-ray source coincident with W49B at very high energies (VHE; E > 100 GeV) with the H.E.S.S. Cherenkov telescopes is reported together with a study of the source with 5 years of Fermi-LAT high energy $\gamma$-ray (0.06 - 300 GeV) data. The smoothly-connected combined source spectrum, measured from 60 MeV to multi-TeV energies, shows two significant spectral breaks at $304\pm20$ MeV and $8.4_{-2.5}^{+2.2}$ GeV, the latter being constrained by the joint fit from the two instruments. The detected spectral features are similar to those observed in several other SNR/MC associations and are found to be indicative of $\gamma$-ray emission produced through neutral-pion decay., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures. Abstract

The GERDA experiment searches for the lepton-number-violating neutrinoless double-β decay of ^{76}Ge (^{76}Ge→^{76}Se+2e^{-}) operating bare Ge diodes with an enriched ^{76}Ge fraction in liquid argon. The exposure for broad-energy germanium type (BEGe) detectors is increased threefold with respect to our previous data release. The BEGe detectors feature an excellent background suppression from the analysis of the time profile of the detector signals. In the analysis window a background level of 1.0_{-0.4}^{+0.6}×10^{-3} counts/(keV kg yr) has been achieved; if normalized to the energy resolution this is the lowest ever achieved in any 0νββ experiment. No signal is observed and a new 90% C.L. lower limit for the half-life of 8.0×10^{25} yr is placed when combining with our previous data. The expected median sensitivity assuming no signal is 5.8×10^{25} yr.

Abstract

Aim. We aim for an understanding of the morphological and spectral properties of the supernova remnant RCW 86 and for insights into the production mechanism leading to the RCW 86 very high-energy γ-ray emission.Methods. We analyzed High Energy Spectroscopic System (H.E.S.S.) data that had increased sensitivity compared to the observations presented in the RCW 86 H.E.S.S. discovery publication. Studies of the morphological correlation between the 0.5–1 keV X-ray band, the 2–5 keV X-ray band, radio, and γ-ray emissions have been performed as well as broadband modeling of the spectral energy distribution with two different emission models.Results. We present the first conclusive evidence that the TeV γ-ray emission region is shell-like based on our morphological studies. The comparison with 2–5 keV X-ray data reveals a correlation with the 0.4–50 TeV γ-ray emission. The spectrum of RCW 86 is best described by a power law with an exponential cutoff at Ecut = (3.5 ± 1.2stat) TeV and a spectral index of Γ ≈ 1.6 ± 0.2. A static leptonic one-zone model adequately describes the measured spectral energy distribution of RCW 86, with the resultant total kinetic energy of the electrons above 1 GeV being equivalent to ~0.1% of the initial kinetic energy of a Type Ia supernova explosion (1051 erg). When using a hadronic model, a magnetic field of B ≈ 100 μG is needed to represent the measured data. Although this is comparable to formerly published estimates, a standard E−2 spectrum for the proton distribution cannot describe the γ-ray data. Instead, a spectral index of Γp ≈ 1.7 would be required, which implies that ∼7 × 1049/ncm−3 has been transferred into high-energy protons with the effective density ncm−3 = n/1 cm−3. This is about 10% of the kinetic energy of a typical Type Ia supernova under the assumption of a density of 1 cm−3.

Abstract

Gaia Data Release 2 (Gaia DR2) contains results for 1693 million sources in the magnitude range 3 to 21 based on observations collected by the European Space Agency Gaia satellite during the first 22 months of its operational phase. We describe the input data, models, and processing used for the astrometric content of Gaia DR2, and the validation of these results performed within the astrometry task. Some 320 billion centroid positions from the pre-processed astrometric CCD observations were used to estimate the five astrometric parameters (positions, parallaxes, and proper motions) for 1332 million sources, and approximate positions at the reference epoch J2015.5 for an additional 361 million mostly faint sources. Special validation solutions were used to characterise the random and systematic errors in parallax and proper motion. For the sources with five-parameter astrometric solutions, the median uncertainty in parallax and position at the reference epoch J2015.5 is about 0.04 mas for bright (G, 25 pages, 29 figures. Abstract

An observation of neutrinoless double beta ([Formula: see text]) decay would allow to shed light onto the nature of neutrinos. Gerda (GERmanium Detector Array) aims to discover this process in a background-free search using [Formula: see text]Ge. The experiment is located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) of the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN) in Italy. Bare, isotopically enriched, high purity germanium detectors are operated in liquid argon. Gerda follows a staged approach. In Phase II 35.6 kg of enriched germanium detectors are operated since December 2015. The application of active background rejection methods, such as a liquid argon scintillation light read-out and pulse shape discrimination of germanium detector signals, allows to reduce the background index to the intended level of [Formula: see text] cts/(keV⋅kg⋅yr). No evidence for the [Formula: see text] decay has been found in 23.2 kg⋅yr of Phase II data, and together with data from Phase I the up-to-date most stringent half-life limit for this process in [Formula: see text]Ge has been established, at a median sensitivity of 5.8⋅10[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]yr the 90[Formula: see text]% C.L. lower limit is 8.0⋅10[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]yr.

Abstract

A new aerosol dynamics model, ADiC (Aerosol Dynamics in Containments), was developed, which considers the effects of coagulation, heat and vapor transfer, phase transition and deposition of particles. The particle size distribution is represented by individual uniform distributions situated in a fixed size grid. That way numerical diffusion is avoided and quasi-simultaneous simulation of coagulation and growth processes is possible. Due to the complexity of the computer model, partial model validation was performed by testing the individual sub-models against the existing experimental evidence. The ADiC model was used to simulate the aerosol dynamics of freshly generated cigarette smoke in acid-covered denuder tubes. Modeling results were compared to data from several studies that report nicotine deposition rates. Simulations revealed that several parameters with large uncertainties can potentially have great effects on the nicotine deposition rate. A nicotine protonation interval from 75% to 90% of the nicotine mass initially on the particle fits the experimental data well in the posterior tube sections. For the anterior tube sections, however, a steady increase of nicotine protonation by roughly 15% is required. Loss of water in denuder tubes has not been documented in the experimental studies found in the literature. Increased deposition rates by a factor up to 7 have been simulated in case of the denuder tube being a perfect sink for water. A simplified sub-model describing diffusion limited phase transition showed a considerable effect on total nicotine deposition of the order of 10% and more for experimentally determined viscosity values. Temperature differences between the tube wall and the aerosol have a considerable, however timely very limited, effect on deposition rate. Several poorly quantified processes and parameters have been discussed and simulated with respect to their potential to affect nicotine deposition rate in a denuder tube. While some of them are difficult to measure (e.g. nicotine protonation, diffusion limited transport within particles), others (e.g. water deposition within the denuder tube) can easily be determined. Thus, the ADiC model can be used, apart from evaluating experimental data, as a tool to plan and design experimental setups.

Abstract

ADAMTS13 is a metalloproteinase that cleaves von Willebrand factor (VWF) into smaller multimers in vivo. This cleavage creates both the typical multimeric size distribution and the characteristic triplet band distribution of VWF. Here we analysed ADAMTS13 content, VWF multimeric size distribution and VWF triplet structure in five commercial VWF/factor VIII (FVIII) concentrates. The relative distribution of ADAMTS13 activity values corresponded well to the ADAMTS13 antigen values for all examined concentrates except Haemate HS®, which had markedly higher ADAMTS13 antigen/activity ratio, with Fanhdi® and Haemate HS® displaying the most intense ADAMTS13 signal. Interestingly, ADAMTS13 levels did not correlate with the high molecular weight multimer content of the concentrates, but did correlate with VWF triplet distribution. Densitometric quantification showed that Wilate®, Immunate® and Willfact® displayed human plasma-like VWF triplet distribution, whereas Fanhdi® and Haemate HS® showed enhanced content of the faster migrating triplet band, which corresponded well to their higher ADAMTS13 content. In summary, Immunate®, Willfact® and Wilate® had lower levels of ADAMTS13 antigen and activity and exhibited a plasma-like VWF triplet structure. Fanhdi® and Haemate HS® had higher ADAMTS13 content and an altered triplet structure. The possible impact of these observations on function and clinical efficacy of VWF/FVIII concentrates is discussed.

124. Lung burden and deposition distribution of inhaled atmospheric urban ultrafine particles as the first step in their health risk assessment

Abstract

Realistic median particle number size distributions were derived by a differential mobility particle sizer in a diameter range of 6–1000 nm for near-city background, city centre, street canyon and road tunnel environments in Budapest. Deposition of inhaled particles within airway generations of an adult woman was determined by a stochastic lung deposition model for sleeping, sitting, light and heavy exercise breathing conditions. Deposition fractions in the respiratory tract were considerable and constant for all physical activities with a mean of 56%. Mean deposition fraction in the extra-thoracic region averaged for the urban environments was decreasing monotonically from 26% for sleeping to 9.4% for heavy exercise. The mean deposition fractions in the tracheobronchial region were constant for the physical activities and urban environments with an overall mean of 12.5%, while the mean deposition fraction in the acinar region averaged for the urban locations increased monotonically with physical activity from 14.7% for sleeping to 34% for heavy exercise. The largest contribution of the acinar deposition to the lung deposition was 75%. The deposition rates in the lung were larger than in the extra-thoracic region, and the deposition rate in the lung was increasingly realised in the AC region by physical activity. It was the extra-thoracic region that received the largest surface density deposition rates; its loading was higher by 3 orders of magnitude than for the lung. Deposition fractions in the airway generations exhibited a distinct peak in the acinar region. The maximum of the curves was shifted to peripheral airway generations with physical activity. The shapes of the surface density deposition rate curves were completely different from those for the deposition rates, indicating that the first few airway generations received the highest surface loading in the lung.

In finite-size high-contrast gratings (HCGs) guided modes with low $Q$ values can occur. On the one hand, this is a resonant mode with a $Q$ value of some hundreds only, on the other hand it can transform part of the finite-size incident wave into the in-plane direction. Such finite-size HCGs with guided modes are proposed here for optical sensors with an on-chip integrated p-i-n photodiode in the same HCG layer. The mode characteristics of the guided mode and the performance of the proposed integrated HCG-based optical sensors are investigated. The proposed integrated HCG-based optical sensors are compact, cost-effective, label-free, and highly sensitive, and can be extended to an array format increasing the throughput.

Abstract

Tunnels serve as enclosed particle loaded environments where mostly stagnant and stable abiotic conditions prevail throughout the year. In-vehicle exposure to ultra-fine particles (UFP) is therefore significant while driving through long tunnels. The objective of this study was to assess exposure to UFP while driving a car through a 3.4 km long highway tunnel system in Austria and to calculate the associated lung deposition. On board a mobile Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS, Grimm model 5403) was used to monitor the particle number concentration in the size range of 5.5 nm to 350 nm. The influence of various air ventilation settings inside the passenger cabin of the car was investigated in terms of UFP concentrations. These ventilation settings and hence the associated particle concentrations inside the cabin were used in the lung deposition model IDEAL to determine their fate in the lung. To examine a real life situation, this heavily frequented highway tunnel system was chosen to serve as a particle laden environment. The data were obtained over several days throughout the year to analyze the effect of traffic mix on the resulting particle regime. Our study revealed a decrease of in-cabin air pollution by up to 88% while using recirculating air (RA) settings in combination with the air-conditioning system. This mode of operation in comparison to plain tunnel air (TA) reduced the corresponding lung deposition by up to 95%. Our observations thus suggest making use of recirculating air setting while driving through poorly ventilated areas such as tunnels. Doing so considerably reduces the resultant particle deposition in the lung.

Abstract

The Cherenkov telescope array (CTA) is a next-generation observatory for very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray astronomy. With one array of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes each in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, CTA will provide full-sky coverage, enhance flux sensitivity by one order of magnitude compared to current instruments, cover gamma-ray energies from 20 GeV to 300 GeV, and provide a wide field of view with angular resolution of a few arc-minutes. Science themes to be addressed by the CTA observatory include (i) understanding the origin of relativistic cosmic particles, and the role these play in the evolution of star forming systems and galaxies, (ii) probing extreme environments such as neutron stars and black holes, but also the cosmic voids, and (iii) exploring frontiers in physics such as the nature of dark matter. With its superior performance, the prospects for CTA combine guaranteed science — the in-depth understanding of known objects and mechanisms — with anticipated detection of new classes of gamma-ray emitters and new phenomena, and a very significant potential for fundamentally new discoveries.

Abstract

In the Gastein valley, numerous facilities use radon for the treatment of various diseases either by exposure to radon in air or in radon rich thermal water. In this study, six test persons were exposed to radon thermal water in a bathtub and the time-dependent radon activity concentration in the exhaled air was recorded. At temperatures between 38°C and 40°C, the radon activity concentration in the water was about 900 kBq/m3 in a total volume of 600 l, where the patients were exposed for 20 min, while continuously sampling the exhaled air during the bathing and 20 min thereafter. After entering the bath, the exhaled radon activity concentration rapidly increased, reaching some kind of saturation after 20 min exposure. The radon activity concentration in the exhaled air was about 8000 Bq/m3 at the maximum, with higher concentrations for male test persons. The total radon transfer from water to the exhaled air was between 480 and 1000 Bq, which is equivalent to 0.08% and 0.2% of the radon in the water.

The incidence of spondylodiscitis is increasing and attributable to an aging population with multimorbidities. Spondylodiscitis represents a life-threatening disease. Typical clinical manifestations often involve nonspecific symptoms with back pain; however, due to the frequent absence of fever the disease is often overlooked. Pathogen detection and spinal imaging with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are essential for the diagnosis. Identification of the causative pathogen is particularly important for initiating targeted antibiotic treatment. Debridement and stabilization are the mainstays of surgical management, even though foreign material must be implanted into the focus of inflammation.

Abstract

Vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) have emerged as a pioneering solution for many high-speed data communication challenges. Therefore, higher bandwidth optical interconnects with data rates in the range of 100 Gbit/s require directly modulated VCSELs with ultimate speed ratings. The small-signal modulation response of a VCSEL can be isolated from the entire system, thus providing accurate information on the intrinsic laser dynamics. Until now, it is assumed that the dynamic behavior of oxide-confined multi-mode VCSELs can be fully modeled using the single-mode rate equations developed for edge-emitters, even though the deviation between the single-mode based model and the measured data is substantially large. Using an advanced theoretical approach, rate equations for multi-mode VCSELs were developed and the small-signal modulation response of ultra-high speed devices with split carrier reservoirs corresponding with the resonating modes were analyzed. Based on this theoretical work, and including gain compression in the model, the analyzed VCSELs showed modulation bandwidth around and exceeding 30 GHz. The common set of figures of merit is extended consistently to explain dynamic properties caused by the coupling of the different reservoirs. Furthermore, beside damping and relaxation oscillation frequency, the advanced model, with gain compression included, can reveal information on the photon lifetime and highlights high-speed effects such as reduced damping in VCSELs due to a negative gain compression factor.

Abstract

The GERmanium Detector Array (GERDA) experiment, located at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory in Italy, is built for the search of $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay in $^{76}$Ge. GERDA operates bare high purity germanium detectors submersed in liquid Argon (LAr). Phase I of the experiment was completed reaching an exposure of about 21 kg$\cdot$yr with a background level of $10^{-2}$ cts/(ke V $\cdot$ kg $\cdot$ yr). GERDA Phase I set a limit on the $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay of $^{76}$Ge of $T_{1/2}^{0\nu} > 2.1 \cdot 10^{25}$ yr. In Phase II 35 kg of germanium detectors enriched in $^{76}$Ge are operated to reach an exposure of 100 kg$\cdot$yr. The design goal is to reduce the background by one order of magnitude to reach the sensitivity for $T_{1/2}^{0\nu} = \mathcal{O} (10^{26} )$ yr. The Phase II setup comprises thirty newly produced Broad Energy Germanium (BEGe) detectors. They contribute to the background reduction with better energy resolution and enhanced pulse shape discrimination. To achieve the necessary background reduction, the setup was complemented with LAr veto. The hardware upgrade for Phase II was finished and all detectors were deployed in December 2015. We present the first results of Phase II with 10.8 kg$\cdot$yr exposure reached in June 2016.

Abstract

The aerosol dynamics model ADiC was extended to include chemical reactions. It is used to computationally replicate denuder tube experiments where freshly generated cigarette smoke is drawn through a vertically arranged, acid covered tube to capture alkaline substances. The calculated deposition rates and total deposition are compared to experimental findings from several studies that investigated respective quantities for nicotine (and ammonia). Further, the form of deposition, vaporous and condensed phase, is considered. The model does not apply any parameters changing physico-chemical properties to fit simulation and experimental findings. The only variable parameter used in all simulations is the choice of the amount of acid initially in the system to establish a certain pH value. An initial pH of 5.9 to 6.25 (i.e. the baseline scenarios) allows for replicating the nicotine deposition rate and total deposition in the lower tube sections. For the same simulation, ammonia deposition rate and total deposition are of the order of the experimental data. For the simulation featuring the initially lower pH value, the deposition of ammonia is lower than the experimental data – in the other case it is higher. Increasing the molality of alkaline substances initially in the system by roughly 20% drastically reduces the differences between simulated and measured nicotine deposition rate. The present model describes some aspects of the dynamics of the complex cigarette smoke in a simplified manner; however, since it is independent of experiment specific parameters it may be applied to other environments such as deposition in the respiratory tract.

Abstract

Internal contaminations of $^{238}$U, $^{235}$U and $^{232}$Th in the bulk of high purity germanium detectors are potential backgrounds for experiments searching for neutrinoless double beta decay of $^{76}$Ge. The data from GERDA Phase~I have been analyzed for alpha events from the decay chain of these contaminations by looking for full decay chains and for time correlations between successive decays in the same detector. No candidate events for a full chain have been found. Upper limits on the activities in the range of a few nBq/kg for $^{226}$Ra, $^{227}$Ac and $^{228}$Th, the long-lived daughter nuclides of $^{238}$U, $^{235}$U and $^{232}$Th, respectively, have been derived. With these upper limits a background index in the energy region of interest from $^{226}$Ra and $^{228}$Th contamination is estimated which satisfies the prerequisites of a future ton scale germanium double beta decay experiment., Comment: 2 figures, 7 pages

Abstract

In this paper, we present a method of self-detection of mode hops in a distributed Bragg reflector tunable laser using the voltage drop in the active section as a monitoring signal. Based on this method, a wavelength setting and stabilization algorithm that is tolerant to temperature variations is proposed. Wavelength locking for a period of more than seven days with an accuracy better than +/- 1.25 GHz has been achieved, meeting the ITU-T standard for 25 GHz channel spacing. Under forced changes in the operation temperature from 15 degrees to 60 degrees, with variations of 0.1 degrees/s, the maximum allowed deviation of +/- 2.5 GHz for the ITU-T standard with 50 GHz channel spacing was kept.

Abstract

Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society 469(4), 4465 – 4482 (2017). doi:10.1093/mnras/stx1098, We report on the discovery of a new fast radio burst (FRB), FRB 150215, with the Parkes radio telescope on 2015 February 15. The burst was detected in real time with a dispersion measure (DM) of 1105.6 ± 0.8 pc cm$^{−3}$, a pulse duration of 2.8 $^{+1.2}_{-0.5}$ ms, and a measured peak flux density assuming that the burst was at beam centre of 0.7$^{+0.2}_{-0.1}$ Jy. The FRB originated at a Galactic longitude and latitude of 24.66°, 5.28° and 25° away from the Galactic Center. Abstract

Etwa 10 % aller alteren Menschen in der Wohnbevolkerung nehmen auf Dauer Benzodiazepine ein. Der Anteil steigt auf bis zu 30 % unter den Heimbewohnern oder Krankenhauspatienten. Gerade beim alteren Patienten geht mit der Einnahme ein hohes Risiko fur unerwunschte Arzneimittelwirkungen (UAW) einher. Die hauptsachlichen Gefahren bestehen in der Induktion von Delirien sowie Sturzen mit nachfolgenden huftgelenknahen Frakturen. Die WHO setzt die neueren Z-Substanzen bezuglich ihres Gefahrdungspotenzials den Benzodiazepinen gleich. Es wird empfohlen, unter engmaschiger arztlicher Begleitung Benzodiazepine fraktioniert vollstandig abzusetzen oder zumindest in der Dosis zu reduzieren.

Abstract

Epidemiological studies proved that cumulative exposure to radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer, the world's most common cancer. The objectives of the present study are (i) to analyse lung cancer risk for chronic, low radon exposures based on the transformation frequency-tissue response (TF-TR) model formulated in terms of alpha particle hits in cell nuclei; (ii) to assess the percentage of attributable lung cancers in six areas of Transylvania where the radon concentration was measured and (iii) to point out the most efficient remediation measures tested on a pilot house in Stei, Romania. Simulations performed with the TF-TR model exhibit a linear dose-effect relationship for chronic, residential radon exposures. The fraction of lung cancer cases attributed to radon ranged from 9 to 28% for the investigated areas. Model predictions may represent a useful tool to complement epidemiological studies on lung cancer risk and to establish reasonable radiation protection regulations for human safety.

Abstract

To determine radiation doses incurred by inhaled thoron progeny, the Monte Carlo radon progeny lung dosimetry code IDEAL-DOSE was adapted to the inhalation of thoron progenies, comprising the alpha-emitting nuclides 216Po, 212Bi and 212Po. Dose calculations for defined exposure conditions yielded a dose conversion coefficient (DCC) of 4.6 mSv WLM(-1) or 94.2 nSv (Bq h m(-3))(-1) when compared with a DCC of 3.8 mSv WLM(-1) if based on the International Commission on Radiological Protection Human Respiratory Tract Model. Bronchial doses were computed for different thoron progenies exposure conditions measured in a Bavarian half-timbered house and in a thoron experimental house at the Helmholtz Zentrum München. DCCs ranged from 4.9 to 12.9 mSv WLM(-1), depending on particle size, unattached fraction and fractional activity concentrations. For exposure-specific indoor aerosol parameters, the thoron progeny DCC is smaller than the radon progeny DCC by about a factor of 2.

Abstract

The stochastic dosimetry model presented here considers the distinctly asymmetric, stochastic branching pattern reported in morphometric measurements. This monopodial structure suggests that an airway diameter is a more appropriate morphometric parameter to classify bronchial dose distributions for inhaled radon progeny than the commonly assigned airway generation numbers. Bronchial doses were calculated for the typical exposure conditions reported for the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory rat inhalation studies, yielding an average bronchial dose of 7.75 mGy WLM(-1). If plotted as functions of airway generations, the resulting dose distributions are highest in the central bronchial airways, while significantly decreasing towards peripheral generations. However, if plotted as functions of airway diameters, doses are much more uniformly distributed among bronchial airways. The comparison between rat and human lungs indicates that dose conversion coefficients for the rat lung are higher than the corresponding values for the human lung by a factor of 1.34 for the experimental PNNL exposure conditions, and of 1.25 for typical human indoor conditions.

Abstract

Inhaled hygroscopic aerosols will absorb water vapor from the warm and humid air of the human lung, thus growing in size and consequently changing their deposition properties.The objectives of the present study are to study the effect of a stochastic lung structure on individual particle growth and related deposition patterns and to predict local deposition patterns for different hygroscopic aerosols.The hygroscopic particle growth model proposed by Ferron et al. has been implemented into the stochastic asymmetric lung deposition model IDEAL. Deposition patterns were calculated for sodium chloride (NaCl), cobalt chloride (CoCl2 · 6H2O), and zinc sulfate (ZnSO4 · 7H2O) aerosols, representing high, medium and low hygroscopic growth factors.Hygroscopic growth decreases deposition of submicron particles compared to hydrophobic particles with equivalent diameters due to a less efficient diffusion mechanism, while the more efficient impaction and sedimentation mechanisms increase total deposition for micron-sized particles. Due to the variability and asymmetry of the human airway system, individual trajectories of inhaled particles are associated with individual growth factors, thereby enhancing the variability of the resulting deposition patterns.Comparisons of model predictions with several experimental data for ultrafine and micrometer-sized particles indicate good agreement, considering intersubject variations of morphometric parameters as well as differences between experimental conditions and modeling assumptions.

Abstract

Lichen vegetation reacts very sensitively to a variety of air pollutants including increased nitrogen concentrations as well as to traffic exhaust in general, which makes lichens reliable monitoring organisms for atmospheric pollution. Recent environmental studies have shown that decreasing abundance of acidophytic lichen species and the increase of nitrophytic lichens can be explained by elevated levels of atmospheric nitric-compounds adsorbed onto nanoparticles. One major source of these atmospheric compounds amongst a wider pollution inventory is diesel exhaust—a mixture of gases and particle matter. This study aimed to shed light on the impact of diesel exhaust on the viability of six differently sensitive lichen species. Diesel exhaust particle concentrations in the laboratory experiments resembled those at a local highway during rush hour. By incubation in a closed stainless steel chamber we could exclude influences from other pollutants than diesel exhaust providing explicit data about the effects of diesel exhaust on lichens. The investigations revealed effects on the photosynthesis of the lichen photobionts and hence the lichen vitality. The conclusions of this study are that 1) the photobiont is affected stronger as the mycobiont and 2) older parts of the lichen are damaged first. Another remarkable result of this study is that 3) these lichens are regenerating to some extent during incubation-free periods—unless the organism is not damaged too much to restore photosynthetic activity. To our knowledge this is the first study evaluating the impact of diesel exhaust on lichens under laboratory conditions separate from other interfering pollutants.

Abstract

A self-powering ultraviolet photodetector (UVPD) that effectively utilizes UV energy in an easy-to-implement way is an attractive alternative for the UV optical sensing and communication. Here we report a novel self-powered UVPD based on a face-to-face hybrid ZnO nanorod arrays (ZNRAs) nanostructure. Large-area free-standing ZNRAs have been grown on indium tin oxide (ITO) conductive glass and Ti substrates through a hydrothermal method. Different geometric dimension of ZNRAs/ITO and ZNRAs/Ti structures were designed to pair hybrid each other for achieving the optimum photoelectric performance. Experimentally, it is found that the optimum UVPD based on face-to-face hybrid ITO/l-ZNRAs/l-ZNRAs/Ti structure exhibits an enhancement of ‘1+1>2’ in photoelectric conversion without applying any external DC voltage when compared with single-face ZNRAs-based UVPDs, and the optimum UVPD demonstrates a responsivity of 2.45 mA W−1 and on/off current ratio of 6.6 × 105 under a UV irradiation of 3.06 μW cm−2 as well as a high durability with a cyclic balance of no less than 93.5% in a 4250-s on/off irradiation. The generation of self-power and the high photoelectric performance of face-to-face hybrid ZNRAs-based UVPDs are associated to the Schottky junctions in ITO/ZnO interface as well as the extensive ZnO nanorod-nanorod homojunction.

Abstract

The primary objectives of the present study were to mathematically describe particle coagulation within the human respiratory tract and to analyze its impact on local particle deposition patterns for high concentrations of inhaled cigarette smoke particles. Coagulation mechanisms simulated were thermal motion, gravitational settling, laminar shear, turbulences, electrical charges, and inertial effects at airway bifurcations. To implement concentration dependent coagulation processes, the Lagrangian random walk deposition model IDEAL, simulating the paths of an individual particle, was modified by tracking the random path of an elemental air volume containing the full size distribution, thus adding an Eulerian element to the Lagrangian random path model. In this combined Lagrangian/Eulerian deposition model, the initial size distribution is continuously modified by coagulation, hygroscopic growth and deposition. For the specific inhalation conditions and the cigarette smoke size distribution assumed in this study, thermal diffusion is by far the greatest source of coagulation, with a minor contribution of laminar shear in peripheral airway generations. Number deposition, which comprises the loss of inhaled particles not only by deposition but also by coagulation, and mass deposition fractions were computed for different puff and breath-hold scenarios as a function of lung generation numbers. The main reduction of the number of inhaled particles in the respiratory tract occurs in the mouth due to coagulation, accompanied by a significant shift of the size distribution to larger particle diameters. In the lung, particle loss is caused primarily by deposition due to diffusion with a preferential deposition of smaller particle diameters. In the size range from about 250 to 500 nm, the number concentration of particles in the exhaled air is higher than that in the inhaled air, indicating that the production of particles in this size range by coagulation is greater than the loss by coagulation to larger sizes and deposition.

Abstract

Objective We aimed to assess effectiveness and tolerability of rotigotine in patients with moderate to severe idiopathic restless legs syndrome (RLS) under daily practice conditions in Germany. Methods In this 3-month noninterventional study, effectiveness was assessed using RLS-6 (primary variables were symptom severity when falling asleep [item 2] and during the night [item 3]). Data were collected at baseline and at the end of treatment. Safety assessments included adverse events (AEs). Results Six hundred and eighty-four patients were treated with rotigotine and 418 (61%) completed the study. The full analysis set (FAS) comprised 564 patients (106 de novo; 458 pretreated [454 had complete rotigotine dosing data]). Mean rotigotine dose of longest duration was 2.4 ± 1.4 mg/24 h. Rotigotine improved all RLS-6 items (mean change from baseline [item 2], −2.4 ± 3.6; [item 3], −2.7 ± 3.4), with the most pronounced improvement observed in daytime symptoms while at rest (item 4, −2.9 ± 3.2). AEs were typical of dopaminergic treatment and transdermal administration. De novo patients generally started rotigotine on 1 mg/24 h (85% [90/106]) and pretreated patients on 1 (50% [227/454]) or 2 mg/24 h (40% [183/454]). Most patients who were pretreated with levodopa (57%), pramipexole (84%), or ropinirole (78%) monotherapy discontinued these medications on initiation of rotigotine. Conclusions Rotigotine was effective and well-tolerated when used in routine clinical practice.

Abstract

The high-frequency electrical properties of a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser with a monolithically integrated electro-optical modulator are studied using small-signal modulation analysis of the electroreflectance. The experimental data obtained are approximated using the suggested equivalent electrical circuit, which accounts for the formation of a nonequilibrium space charge in the carrier-depletion region of the modulator. The bandwidth of the high-frequency electrical-signal transfer to the electro-optical region, determined for the suggested equivalent electrical circuit of the modulator, is shown to be 3GHz.
