Search

Statistical analysis of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can help radiologists to detect pathologies that are otherwise likely to be missed. Deep learning (DL) has shown promise in modeling complex spatial data for brain anomaly detection. However, DL models have major deficiencies: they need large amounts of high-quality training data, are difficult to design and train and are sensitive to subtle changes in scanning protocols and hardware. Here, we show that also simple statistical methods such as voxel-wise (baseline and covariance) models and a linear projection method using spatial patterns can achieve DL-equivalent (3D convolutional autoencoder) performance in unsupervised pathology detection. All methods were trained (N=395) and compared (N=44) on a novel, expert-curated multiparametric (8 sequences) head MRI dataset of healthy and pathological cases, respectively. We show that these simple methods can be more accurate in detecting small lesions and are considerably easier to train and comprehend. The methods were quantitatively compared using AUC and average precision and evaluated qualitatively on clinical use cases comprising brain atrophy, tumors (small metastases) and movement artefacts. Our results demonstrate that while DL methods may be useful, they should show a sufficiently large performance improvement over simpler methods to justify their usage. Thus, simple statistical methods should provide the baseline for benchmarks. We report the results of a search for the inelastic scattering of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) in the XENON1T dark matter experiment. Scattering off $^{129}$Xe is the most sensitive probe of inelastic WIMP interactions, with a signature of a 39.6 keV de-excitation photon detected simultaneously with the nuclear recoil. Using an exposure of 0.89 tonne-years, we find no evidence of inelastic WIMP scattering with a significance of more than 2$\sigma$. A profile-likelihood ratio analysis is used to set upper limits on the cross-section of WIMP-nucleus interactions. We exclude new parameter space for WIMPs heavier than 100 GeV/c${}^2$, with the strongest upper limit of $3.3 \times 10^{-39}$ cm${}^2$ for 130 GeV/c${}^2$ WIMPs at 90\% confidence level., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

The Cold molecule Nuclear Time-Reversal EXperiment (CeNTREX) is a new effort aiming for a significant increase in sensitivity over the best present upper bounds on the strength of hadronic time reversal ($T$) violating fundamental interactions. The experimental signature will be shifts in nuclear magnetic resonance frequencies of $^{205}$Tl in electrically-polarized thallium fluoride (TlF) molecules. Here we describe the motivation for studying these $T$-violating interactions and for using TlF to do so. To achieve higher sensitivity than earlier searches for $T$-violation in TlF, CeNTREX uses a cryogenic molecular beam source, optical state preparation and detection, and modern methods of coherent quantum state manipulation. Details of the measurement scheme and the current state of the apparatus are presented, with quantitative measurements of the TlF beam. Finally, the estimated sensitivity and methods to control systematic errors are discussed., Comment: 24 pages

The selection of low-radioactive construction materials is of utmost importance for the success of low-energy rare event search experiments. Besides radioactive contaminants in the bulk, the emanation of radioactive radon atoms from material surfaces attains increasing relevance in the effort to further reduce the background of such experiments. In this work, we present the $^{222}$Rn emanation measurements performed for the XENON1T dark matter experiment. Together with the bulk impurity screening campaign, the results enabled us to select the radio-purest construction materials, targeting a $^{222}$Rn activity concentration of 10 $\mu$Bq/kg in 3.2 t of xenon. The knowledge of the distribution of the $^{222}$Rn sources allowed us to selectively eliminate critical components in the course of the experiment. The predictions from the emanation measurements were compared to data of the $^{222}$Rn activity concentration in XENON1T. The final $^{222}$Rn activity concentration of (4.5 $\pm$ 0.1) $\mu$Bq/kg in the target of XENON1T is the lowest ever achieved in a xenon dark matter experiment., Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures

As scientific progress highly depends on the quality of research data, there are strict requirements for data quality coming from the scientific community. A major challenge in data quality assurance is to localise quality problems that are inherent to data. Due to the dynamic digitalisation in specific scientific fields, especially the humanities, different database technologies and data formats may be used in rather short terms to gain experiences. We present a model-driven approach to analyse the quality of research data. It allows abstracting from the underlying database technology. Based on the observation that many quality problems show anti-patterns, a data engineer formulates analysis patterns that are generic concerning the database format and technology. A domain expert chooses a pattern that has been adapted to a specific database technology and concretises it for a domain-specific database format. The resulting concrete patterns are used by data analysts to locate quality problems in their databases. As proof of concept, we implemented tool support that realises this approach for XML databases. We evaluated our approach concerning expressiveness and performance in the domain of cultural heritage based on a qualitative study on quality problems occurring in cultural heritage data., Comment: 28 pages. XENONnT is a dark matter direct detection experiment, utilizing 5.9 t of instrumented liquid xenon, located at the INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. In this work, we predict the experimental background and project the sensitivity of XENONnT to the detection of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs). The expected average differential background rate in the energy region of interest, corresponding to (1, 13) keV and (4, 50) keV for electronic and nuclear recoils, amounts to $12.3 \pm 0.6$ (keV t y)$^{-1}$ and $(2.2\pm 0.5)\times 10^{-3}$ (keV t y)$^{-1}$, respectively, in a 4 t fiducial mass. We compute unified confidence intervals using the profile construction method, in order to ensure proper coverage. With the exposure goal of 20 t$\,$y, the expected sensitivity to spin-independent WIMP-nucleon interactions reaches a cross-section of $1.4\times10^{-48}$ cm$^2$ for a 50 GeV/c$^2$ mass WIMP at 90% confidence level, more than one order of magnitude beyond the current best limit, set by XENON1T. In addition, we show that for a 50 GeV/c$^2$ WIMP with cross-sections above $2.6\times10^{-48}$ cm$^2$ ($5.0\times10^{-48}$ cm$^2$) the median XENONnT discovery significance exceeds 3$\sigma$ (5$\sigma$). The expected sensitivity to the spin-dependent WIMP coupling to neutrons (protons) reaches $2.2\times10^{-43}$ cm$^2$ ($6.0\times10^{-42}$ cm$^2$).

Intense ultrashort laser pulses propagating through an underdense plasma are able to drive relativistic plasma waves, creating accelerating structures with extreme gradients. These structures represent a new type of compact sources for generating ultrarelativistic, ultrashort electron beams. This chapter covers the theoretical background behind the process of LWFA. Starting from the basic description of electromagnetic waves and their interaction with particles, the main aspects of the LWFA are presented. These include the excitation of plasma waves, description of the acceleration phase and injection mechanisms. Recent theoretical investigations have indicated that rapid optical cycling should be feasible in complex polyatomic molecules with diverse constituents, geometries and symmetries. However, as a composite molecular mass grows, so does the required number of photon scattering events necessary to decelerate and confine molecular beams using laser light. Utilizing coherent momentum exchange between light fields and molecules can suppress spontaneous emission and significantly reduce experimental complexity for slowing and trapping. Working with BaH as a test species, we have identified a robust, experimentally viable configuration to achieve large molasses-like cooling forces for molecules using polychromatic optical fields addressing both $X-A$ and $X-B$ electronic transitions, simultaneously. Using numerical solutions of the time-dependent density matrix as well as Monte Carlo simulations, we demonstrate that creation of Suppressed Emission Rate (SupER) molasses with large capture velocities ($\sim 40$ m/s) is generically feasible for polyatomic molecules of increasing complexity that have an optical cycling center. Proposed SupER molasses are anticipated to not only extend quantum control to novel molecular species with abundant vibrational decay channels, but also significantly increase trapped densities for previously laser-cooled diatomic and triatomic species.

We report results from searches for new physics with low-energy electronic recoil data recorded with the XENON1T detector. With an exposure of 0.65 t-y and an unprecedentedly low background rate of $76\pm2$ events/(t y keV) between 1 and 30 keV, the data enables sensitive searches for solar axions, an enhanced neutrino magnetic moment, and bosonic dark matter. An excess over known backgrounds is observed at low energies and most prominent between 2 and 3 keV. The solar axion model has a 3.4$\sigma$ significance, and a 3D 90% confidence surface is reported for axion couplings to electrons, photons, and nucleons. This surface is inscribed in the cuboid defined by $g_{ae}<3.8 \times 10^{-12}$, $g_{ae}g_{an}^{eff}<4.8\times 10^{-18}$, and $g_{ae}g_{a\gamma}<7.7\times10^{-22} GeV^{-1}$, and excludes either $g_{ae}=0$ or $g_{ae}g_{a\gamma}=g_{ae}g_{an}^{eff}=0$. The neutrino magnetic moment signal is similarly favored over background at 3.2$\sigma$ and a confidence interval of $\mu_{\nu} \in (1.4,2.9)\times10^{-11}\mu_B$ (90% C.L.) is reported. Both results are in strong tension with stellar constraints. The excess can also be explained by $\beta$ decays of tritium at 3.2$\sigma$ with a trace amount that can neither be confirmed nor excluded with current knowledge of its production and reduction mechanisms. The significances of the solar axion and neutrino magnetic moment hypotheses are reduced to 2.0$\sigma$ and 0.9$\sigma$, respectively, if an unconstrained tritium component is included in the fitting. With respect to bosonic dark matter, the excess favors a monoenergetic peak at ($2.3\pm0.2$) keV (68% C.L.) with a 3.0$\sigma$ global (4.0$\sigma$ local) significance. We also consider the possibility that $^{37}$Ar may be present in the detector and yield a 2.82 keV peak. We detail the sensitivity of the liquid xenon (LXe) DARWIN observatory to solar neutrinos via elastic electron scattering. We find that DARWIN will have the potential to measure the fluxes of five solar neutrino components: $pp$, $^7$Be, $^{13}$N, $^{15}$O and $pep$. The precision of the $^{13}$N, $^{15}$O and $pep$ components is hindered by the double-beta decay of $^{136}$Xe and, thus, would benefit from a depleted target. A high-statistics observation of $pp$ neutrinos would allow us to infer the values of the weak mixing angle, $\sin^2\theta_w$, and the electron-type neutrino survival probability, $P_e$, in the electron recoil energy region from a few keV up to 200 keV for the first time, with relative precision of 5% and 4%, respectively, at an exposure of 300 ty. An observation of $pp$ and $^7$Be neutrinos would constrain the neutrino-inferred solar luminosity down to 0.2%. A combination of all flux measurements would distinguish between the high (GS98) and low metallicity (AGS09) solar models with 2.1-2.5$\sigma$ significance, independent of external measurements from other experiments or a measurement of $^8$B neutrinos through coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering in DARWIN. We describe the explicit computation of a family of 4-branch-point rational functions of degree 63 with monodromy group PSL(6,2). This, in particular, negatively answers a question by J. K\"onig whether there exists a such a function with rational coefficients. We present the first experimental demonstration of radiation pressure force deflection and direct laser cooling for barium monohydride (BaH) molecules resulting from multiple photon scattering. Despite a small recoil velocity (2.7 mm/s) and a long excited state lifetime (137 ns), we use 1060 nm laser light exciting the $X\rightarrow A$ electronic transition of BaH to deflect a cryogenic buffer-gas beam and reduce its transverse velocity spread. Multiple experimental methods are employed to characterize the optical cycling dynamics and benchmark theoretical estimates based on rate equation models as well as solutions of the Lindblad master equation for the complete multilevel system. Broader implications for laser cooling and magneto-optical trapping of heavy-metal-containing molecules with narrow transition linewidths are presented. Our results pave the way for producing a new class of ultracold molecules -- alkaline earth monohydrides -- via direct laser cooling and trapping, opening the door to realizing a new method for delivering ultracold hydrogen atoms (Lane 2015 \textit{Phys. Rev. A} 92, 022511).

Xenon dual-phase time projection chambers designed to search for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles have so far shown a relative energy resolution which degrades with energy above $\sim$200 keV due to the saturation effects. This has limited their sensitivity in the search for rare events like the neutrinoless double-beta decay of $^{136}$Xe at its $Q$-value, $Q_{\beta\beta}\simeq$ 2.46 MeV. For the XENON1T dual-phase time projection chamber, we demonstrate that the relative energy resolution at 1 $\sigma/\mu$ is as low as (0.80$\pm$0.02) % in its one-ton fiducial mass, and for single-site interactions at $Q_{\beta\beta}$. We also present a new signal correction method to rectify the saturation effects of the signal readout system, resulting in more accurate position reconstruction and indirectly improving the energy resolution. Direct dark matter detection experiments based on a liquid xenon target are leading the search for dark matter particles with masses above $\sim$ 5 GeV/c$^2$, but have limited sensitivity to lighter masses because of the small momentum transfer in dark matter-nucleus elastic scattering. However, there is an irreducible contribution from inelastic processes accompanying the elastic scattering, which leads to the excitation and ionization of the recoiling atom (the Migdal effect) or the emission of a Bremsstrahlung photon. In this letter, we report on a probe of low-mass dark matter with masses down to about 85 MeV/c$^2$ by looking for electronic recoils induced by the Migdal effect and Bremsstrahlung, using data from the XENON1T experiment. Besides the approach of detecting both scintillation and ionization signals, we exploit an approach that uses ionization signals only, which allows for a lower detection threshold. This analysis significantly enhances the sensitivity of XENON1T to light dark matter previously beyond its reach.

We report constraints on light dark matter (DM) models using ionization signals in the XENON1T experiment. We mitigate backgrounds with strong event selections, rather than requiring a scintillation signal, leaving an effective exposure of $(22 \pm 3)$ tonne-days. Above $\sim\!0.4\,\mathrm{keV}_\mathrm{ee}$, we observe $<1 \, \text{event}/(\text{tonne} \times \text{day} \times \text{keV}_\text{ee})$, which is more than one thousand times lower than in similar searches with other detectors. Despite observing a higher rate at lower energies, no DM or CEvNS detection may be claimed because we cannot model all of our backgrounds. We thus exclude new regions in the parameter spaces for DM-nucleus scattering for DM masses $m_\chi$ within $3-6\,\mathrm{GeV}/\mathrm{c}^2$, DM-electron scattering for $m_\chi > 30\,\mathrm{MeV}/\mathrm{c}^2$, and absorption of dark photons and axion-like particles for $m_\chi$ within $0.186 - 1 \, \mathrm{keV}/\mathrm{c}^2$.

The XENON1T experiment at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso is the most sensitive direct detection experiment for dark matter in the form of weakly interacting particles (WIMPs) with masses above $6\,$GeV/$c^2$ scattering off nuclei. The detector employs a dual-phase time projection chamber with 2.0 metric tons of liquid xenon in the target. A one metric $\mathrm{ton}\times\mathrm{year}$ exposure of science data was collected between October 2016 and February 2018. This article reports on the performance of the detector during this period and describes details of the data analysis that led to the most stringent exclusion limits on various WIMP-nucleon interaction models to date. In particular, signal reconstruction, event selection and calibration of the detector response to nuclear and electronic recoils in XENON1T are discussed.

The XENON1T liquid xenon time projection chamber is the most sensitive detector built to date for the measurement of direct interactions of weakly interacting massive particles with normal matter. The data acquisition system (DAQ) is constructed from commercial, open source, and custom components to digitize signals from the detector and store them for later analysis. The system achieves an extremely low signal threshold below a tenth of a photoelectron using a parallelized readout with the global trigger deferred to a later, software stage. The event identification is based on MongoDB database queries and has over 97% efficiency at recognizing interactions at the analysis energy threshold. A readout bandwidth over 300 MB/s is reached in calibration modes and is further expandable via parallelization. Two-neutrino double electron capture ($2\nu$ECEC) is a second-order Weak process with predicted half-lives that surpass the age of the Universe by many orders of magnitude. Until now, indications for $2\nu$ECEC decays have only been seen for two isotopes, $^{78}$Kr and $^{130}$Ba, and instruments with very low background levels are needed to detect them directly with high statistical significance. The $2\nu$ECEC half-life provides an important input for nuclear structure models and its measurement represents a first step in the search for the neutrinoless double electron capture processes ($0\nu$ECEC). A detection of the latter would have implications for the nature of the neutrino and give access to the absolute neutrino mass. Here we report on the first direct observation of $2\nu$ECEC in $^{124}$Xe with the XENON1T Dark Matter detector. The significance of the signal is $4.4\sigma$ and the corresponding half-life $T_{1/2}^{2\nu\text{ECEC}} = (1.8\pm 0.5_\text{stat}\pm 0.1_\text{sys})\times 10^{22}\;\text{y}$ is the longest ever measured directly. This study demonstrates that the low background and large target mass of xenon-based Dark Matter detectors make them well suited to measuring other rare processes as well, and it highlights the broad physics reach for even larger next-generation experiments.

Data analysis is at the core of scientific studies, a prominent task that researchers and practitioners typically undertake by programming their own set of automated scripts. While there is no shortage of tools and languages available for designing data analysis pipelines, users spend substantial effort in learning the specifics of such languages/tools and often design solutions too project specific to be reused in future studies. Furthermore, users need to put further effort into making their code scalable, as parallel implementations are typically more complex. We address these problems by proposing an advanced code recommendation tool which facilitates developing data science scripts. Users formulate their intentions in a human-readable Domain Specific Language (DSL) for dataframe manipulation and analysis. The DSL statements can be converted into executable Python code during editing. To avoid the need to learn the DSL and increase user-friendliness, our tool supports code completion in mainstream IDEs and editors. Moreover, DSL statements can generate executable code for different data analysis frameworks (currently we support Pandas and PySpark). Overall, our approach attempts to accelerate programming of common data analysis tasks and to facilitate the conversion of the implementations between frameworks. In a preliminary assessment based on a popular data processing tutorial, our tool was able to fully cover 9 out of 14 processing steps for Pandas and 10 out of 16 for PySpark, while partially covering 4 processing steps for each of the frameworks., Comment: 7 pages

We study the loading of electrons into a quantum dot with dynamically controlled tunnel barriers. We introduce a method to measure tunneling rates for individual discrete states and to identify their relaxation paths. Exponential selectivity of the tunnel coupling enables loading into specific quantum dot states by tuning independently energy and rates. While for the single-electron case orbital relaxation leads to fast transition into the ground state, for electron pairs triplet-to-singlet relaxation is suppressed by long spin-flip times. This enables the fast gate-controlled initialization of either a singlet or a triplet electron pair state in a quantum dot with broad potential applications in quantum technologies.

The XENON1T experiment searches for dark matter particles through their scattering off xenon atoms in a 2 tonne liquid xenon target. The detector is a dual-phase time projection chamber, which measures simultaneously the scintillation and ionization signals produced by interactions in target volume, to reconstruct energy and position, as well as the type of the interaction. The background rate in the central volume of XENON1T detector is the lowest achieved so far with a liquid xenon-based direct detection experiment. In this work we describe the response model of the detector, the background and signal models, and the statistical inference procedures used in the dark matter searches with a 1 tonne$\times$year exposure of XENON1T data, that leaded to the best limit to date on WIMP-nucleon spin-independent elastic scatter cross-section for WIMP masses above 6 GeV/c$^2$.
