104. Spatially Resolved Ultraviolet Spectroscopy of the Great Dimming of Betelgeuse

Abstract

The bright supergiant, Betelgeuse (Alpha Orionis, HD 39801) experienced a visual dimming during 2019 December and the first quarter of 2020 reaching an historic minimum 2020 February 7$-$13. During 2019 September-November, prior to the optical dimming event, the photosphere was expanding. At the same time, spatially resolved ultraviolet spectra using the Hubble Space Telescope/Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph revealed a substantial increase in the ultraviolet spectrum and Mg II line emission from the chromosphere over the southern hemisphere of the star. Moreover, the temperature and electron density inferred from the spectrum and C II diagnostics also increased in this hemisphere. These changes happened prior to the Great Dimming Event. Variations in the Mg II k-line profiles suggest material moved outwards in response to the passage of a pulse or acoustic shock from 2019 September through 2019 November. It appears that this extraordinary outflow of material from the star, likely initiated by convective photospheric elements, was enhanced by the coincidence with the outward motions in this phase of the $\sim$400 day pulsation cycle. These ultraviolet observations appear to provide the connecting link between the known large convective cells in the photosphere and the mass ejection event that cooled to form the dust cloud in the southern hemisphere imaged in 2019 December, and led to the exceptional optical dimming of Betelgeuse in 2020 February., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, Astrophysical Journal, accepted

Abstract

High resolution spectra of typical wind diagnostics ([OI] 6300 \r{A} and other forbidden emission lines) can often be decomposed into multiple components: high-velocity components with blueshifts up to several 100 km/s are usually attributed to fast jets, while narrow (NLVC) and broad (BLVC) low-velocity components are believed to trace slower disc winds. Under the assumption that the line-broadening is dominated by Keplerian rotation, several studies have found that the BLVCs should trace gas launched between 0.05 and 0.5 au and correlations between the properties of BLVCs and NLVCs have been interpreted as evidence for the emission tracing an extended MHD wind and not a photoevaporative wind. We calculated synthetic line profiles obtained from detailed photoionisation calculations of an X-ray photoevaporation model and a simple MHD wind model and analyzed the emission regions of different diagnostic lines and the resulting spectral profiles. The photoevaporation model reproduces most of the observed NLVCs but not the BLVCs or HVCs. The MHD model is able to reproduce all components but produces Keplerian double peaks at average inclinations that are rarely observed. The combination of MHD and photoevaporative winds could solve this problem. Our results suggest that the Gaussian decomposition does not allow for a clear distinction of flux from different wind regions and that the line broadening is often dominated by the velocity gradient in the outflow rather than by Keplerian rotation. Abstract

Using randomized control trials (RCTs) applied over time in different countries, we study how the economic environment affects how agents learn from new information. We show that as inflation has recently risen in advanced economies, both households and firms have become more attentive and informed about inflation, leading them to respond less to exogenously provided information about inflation and monetary policy. We also study the effects of RCTs in countries where inflation has been consistently high (Uruguay) and low (New Zealand) as well as what happens when the same agents are repeatedly provided information in both low- and high-inflation environments (Italy). Our results broadly support models in which inattention is an endogenous outcome that depends on the economic environment. 107. Origin of the Scotia Sea Magnetic Susceptibility Signal Across the MIS6-MIS5 Transition

Abstract

Patterns of variability in Pleistocene magnetic susceptibility (k) from deep-sea sediment cores from the Scotia Sea show a striking similarity to patterns of dust flux recorded in the EPICA Dronning Maud Land (EDML) ice core.  Antarctic marine k records broadly reflect the interplay of lithogenic sediment provenance, biological productivity, sediment transport processes, and post-depositional diagenesis. Here we explore the origin of the Scotia Sea k record via a detailed rock magnetic study across the transition from MIS 6 to MIS 5. We analyzed bulk sediment and grain size separates in order to construct magnetic signatures of iceberg rafted debris (IBRD), sortable silt, and eolian input. The MIS 6-MIS 5 transition consists of three lithologies, a high k silty-clay-rich diatomaceous mud deposited during the glacial interval, an IBRD-rich but low k silty clay that marks the onset of deglaciation, and a low k diatomaceous ooze in which IBRD decreases forward through time. The high k glacial sediment is characterized by multi-domain hysteresis parameters, low χARM/χ values, S ratios near 1, and thermomagnetic curves indicative of low-Ti titanomagnetite. The absence of k peaks in the IBRD-rich silty-clay and IBRD rich diatomaceous ooze likely reflects the weakly magnetic lithogenic detritus supplied by Weddell Sea Embayment (WSE) ice streams, such as sandstone, quartzite, metasedimentary lithologies, phyllite and schist observed in lateral moraines adjacent to ice streams of the eastern WSE. The deglacial interval is characterized by elevated MR/MS, χARM/χ, and HIRM values, and decreased S-ratios in the bulk sediment, suggesting a greater proportion of high coercivity minerals such as hematite or goethite in the iron oxide assemblage. Preliminary data from grain size separates indicates that the clay mass fraction is > 0.5 in all three lithologies. Clay is also the dominant size fraction in the EDML ice core dust, with particle sizes generally < 5 μm. The Scotia Sea clay fraction k values are a factor 1.5 to 5 weaker than the silt fraction k values, and therefore are not the main carrier of the bulk k signal. The rock magnetic signatures of Scotia Sea sediment will be compared to those of terrestrial till and bedrock from the WSE, and to those of potential dust sources in South America to identify the sediment sources and environmental processes responsible for the k signal.

Abstract

Expectations about economic variables vary systematically across genders. In the domain of inflation, women have persistently higher expectations than men. We argue that traditional gender roles are a significant factor in generating this gender expectations gap as they expose women and men to different economic signals in their daily lives. Using unique data on the participation of men and women in household grocery chores, their resulting exposure to price signals, and their inflation expectations, we document a tight link between the gender expectations gap and the distribution of grocery shopping duties. Because grocery prices are highly volatile, and consumers focus disproportionally on positive price changes, frequent exposure to grocery prices increases perceptions of current inflation and expectations of future inflation. The gender expectations gap is largest in households whose female heads are solely responsible for grocery shopping, whereas no gap arises in households that split grocery chores equally between men and women. Our results indicate that gender differences in inflation expectations arise due to social conditioning rather than through differences in innate abilities, skills, or preferences.

Abstract

Current state-of-the-art object detection algorithms still suffer the problem of imbalanced distribution of training data over object classes and background. Recent work introduced a new loss function called focal loss to mitigate this problem, but at the cost of an additional hyperparameter. Manually tuning this hyperparameter for each training task is highly time-consuming. With automated focal loss we introduce a new loss function which substitutes this hyperparameter by a parameter that is automatically adapted during the training progress and controls the amount of focusing on hard training examples. We show on the COCO benchmark that this leads to an up to 30% faster training convergence. We further introduced a focal regression loss which on the more challenging task of 3D vehicle detection outperforms other loss functions by up to 1.8 AOS and can be used as a value range independent metric for regression.

Abstract

Photoevaporation of planet forming discs by high energy radiation from the central star is potentially a crucial mechanism for disc evolution and it may play an important role in the formation and evolution of planetary system. We present here a new generation of X-ray photoevaporation models for solar-type stars, based on a new set of hydrodynamical simulations, which account for stellar irradiation via a new, significantly improved, parameterisation of gas temperatures, based on detailed photoionisation and radiation transfer calculations. This is the first of a series of papers aiming at providing a library of models which cover the observed parameter space in stellar and disc mass, metallicity and stellar X-ray properties. We focus here on solar-type stars (0.7 M$_\odot$) with relatively low-mass discs (1% of the stellar mass) and explore the dependence of the wind mass loss rates on stellar X-ray luminosity. We model primordial discs as well as transition discs at various stages of evolution. Our 2D hydrodynamical models are then used to derive simple recipes for the mass loss rates that are suitable for inclusion in one-dimensional disc evolution and/or planet formation models typically employed for population synthesis studies. Line profiles from typical wind diagnostics ([OI] 6300 $\overset{\lower.5em\circ}{\mathrm{A}}$ and [NeII] 12.8 $\mu$m) are also calculated for our models and found to be roughly in agreement with previous studies. Abstract

We present a new technology for the shaping of the electric field in Time Projection Chambers (TPCs) using a carbon-loaded polyimide foil. This technology allows for the minimisation of passive material near the active volume of the TPC and thus is capable to reduce background events originating from radioactive decays or scattering on the material itself. Furthermore, the high and continuous electric resistivity of the foil limits the power dissipation per unit area and minimizes the risks of damages in the case of an electric field breakdown. Replacing the conventional field cage with a resistive plastic film structure called 'shell' decreases the number of components within the TPC and therefore reduces the potential points of failure when operating the detector. A prototype liquid argon (LAr) TPC with such a resistive shell and with a cathode made of the same material was successfully tested for long term operation with electric field values up to about 1.5 kV/cm. Abstract

Spectangular is a GUI based software package written in C++ designed for spectral disentangling on the wavelength scale. The code disentangles spectra of SB1 and SB2 systems and can now also be used also for spectra showing variability. In this work, effects of variability caused by telluric lines, line profile, and continuum flux are being investigated. Also shown is the disentangling on spectra from an artificial eclipsing binary. It is now possible to optimize on the flux ratios of each spectrum, making the disentangling a technique for extracting photometric information from spectroscopic observations usually provided by additional photometry. 140. Origin of the Scotia Sea Magnetic Susceptibility Signal Across the MIS6-MIS5 Transition

Abstract

Patterns of variability in Pleistocene magnetic susceptibility (k) from deep-sea sediment cores from the Scotia Sea show a striking similarity to patterns of dust flux recorded in the EPICA Dronning Maud Land (EDML) ice core.  Antarctic marine k records broadly reflect the interplay of lithogenic sediment provenance, biological productivity, sediment transport processes, and post-depositional diagenesis. Here we explore the origin of the Scotia Sea k record via a detailed rock magnetic study across the transition from MIS 6 to MIS 5. We analyzed bulk sediment and grain size separates in order to construct magnetic signatures of iceberg rafted debris (IBRD), sortable silt, and eolian input. The MIS 6-MIS 5 transition consists of three lithologies, a high k silty-clay-rich diatomaceous mud deposited during the glacial interval, an IBRD-rich but low k silty clay that marks the onset of deglaciation, and a low k diatomaceous ooze in which IBRD decreases forward through time. The high k glacial sediment is characterized by multi-domain hysteresis parameters, low χARM/χ values, S ratios near 1, and thermomagnetic curves indicative of low-Ti titanomagnetite. The absence of k peaks in the IBRD-rich silty-clay and IBRD rich diatomaceous ooze likely reflects the weakly magnetic lithogenic detritus supplied by Weddell Sea Embayment (WSE) ice streams, such as sandstone, quartzite, metasedimentary lithologies, phyllite and schist observed in lateral moraines adjacent to ice streams of the eastern WSE. The deglacial interval is characterized by elevated MR/MS, χARM/χ, and HIRM values, and decreased S-ratios in the bulk sediment, suggesting a greater proportion of high coercivity minerals such as hematite or goethite in the iron oxide assemblage. Preliminary data from grain size separates indicates that the clay mass fraction is > 0.5 in all three lithologies. Clay is also the dominant size fraction in the EDML ice core dust, with particle sizes generally < 5 μm. The Scotia Sea clay fraction k values are a factor 1.5 to 5 weaker than the silt fraction k values, and therefore are not the main carrier of the bulk k signal. The rock magnetic signatures of Scotia Sea sediment will be compared to those of terrestrial till and bedrock from the WSE, and to those of potential dust sources in South America to identify the sediment sources and environmental processes responsible for the k signal.
