SPHERE (Beuzit et al,. 2019) has now been in operation at the VLT for more than 5 years, demonstrating a high level of performance. SPHERE has produced outstanding results using a variety of operating modes, primarily in the field of direct imaging of exoplanetary systems, focusing on exoplanets as point sources and circumstellar disks as extended objects. The achievements obtained thus far with SPHERE (~200 refereed publications) in different areas (exoplanets, disks, solar system, stellar physics...) have motivated a large consortium to propose an even more ambitious set of science cases, and its corresponding technical implementation in the form of an upgrade. The SPHERE+ project capitalizes on the expertise and lessons learned from SPHERE to push high contrast imaging performance to its limits on the VLT 8m-telescope. The scientific program of SPHERE+ described in this document will open a new and compelling scientific window for the upcoming decade in strong synergy with ground-based facilities (VLT/I, ELT, ALMA, and SKA) and space missions (Gaia, JWST, PLATO and WFIRST). While SPHERE has sampled the outer parts of planetary systems beyond a few tens of AU, SPHERE+ will dig into the inner regions around stars to reveal and characterize by mean of spectroscopy the giant planet population down to the snow line. Building on SPHERE's scientific heritage and resounding success, SPHERE+ will be a dedicated survey instrument which will strengthen the leadership of ESO and the European community in the very competitive field of direct imaging of exoplanetary systems. With enhanced capabilities, it will enable an even broader diversity of science cases including the study of the solar system, the birth and death of stars and the exploration of the inner regions of active galactic nuclei., White paper submitted to ESO on Feb. 20th, 2020

The inner few au region of protoplanetary disks is the cradle of terrestial planets. Looking at this region provides insights into the early phase of planet formation: dust grain growth and coagulation. Interferometers working at mid-infrared wavelengths can resolve the thermal radiation from the warm inner regions, providing information on the structure of these disks at very high resolution. I will present early results from the guaranteed observing program for young stellar objects of MATISSE, the new VLTI instrument for the thermal infrared. One highlight is that based on an ongoing survey of Herbig AeBe stars, the L band (3 micron) brightness distribution of these disks is commonly found to be asymmetric (one-third of a sample of 21 observed systems). I will discuss the potential sources for the asymmetry, like binarity, illumination effects, or asymmetric disk structure, specifically addressing the case of HD 163296.

Burghardt Abstract: Precocial offspring are often required to recognize and acquire food without assistance. In addition, they must be able to respond to changes in prey availability. We studied two species of crayfish snake (Regina septemvittata and R. grahamii) to compare the effect of the availability of their preferred prey, freshly moulted crayfish, on the ontogeny of chemosensory response towards different prey types (fish, odonate larvae, intermoult crayfish and freshly moulted crayfish). A split litter design was used; within each species, litters were divided into three groups for testing at different ages (7, 14 and 21 days) and then within each age group, individuals were assigned to treatment groups that were fed or not fed prior to testing. The results of this study confirm that R. grahamii and R. septemvittata are born with chemosensory prey preferences that reflect their specialized diets. However, the ontogeny of these preferences is modified by food availability and available energy levels. Significantly, the pattern of development that emerged in the groups deprived of food differed between species. Regina septemvittata neonates had limited yolk and fat reserves and rapidly increased their interest in alternative prey types, whereas R. grahamii neonates, with significantly more reserves, did not increase their responses to alternative prey. These differences may reflect alternative survival strategies of newborn snakes that have different amounts of energy reserves at birth. A modelling technique for simulating the time averaged properties in boundary flows has been formulated. The technique solves the time averaged equations representing conservation of momentum, mass and heat transfer with an approximate mathematical method; and makes use of an interactive scheme, involving manipulation of the mesh into which the flow is divided, to reduce errors from the mathematical method. This technique has been used to simulate the time averaged momentum, mass and heat transfer rates in a series of radial wall jet flows. It has been shown that the technique can predict- momentum, mass and heat transfer rates in flow situations similar to those commonly found in industry. However, accurate simulation of the turbulent transfer processes in a chemically reacting Methane, Carbon Monoxide and Oxygen flow was found to be impossible, because of deficiences in the reaction model. From these results it was deduced that to accurately simulate the transfer processes in complex flows, involving chemical or ionic reactions, a more sophisticated modelling technique should be constructed. It is recommended that this technique be based upon the exact turbulent transport equations.

man - Abstract
Universities as a supplier of the highly skilled have long been understood as a\ud contributor to economic development (Glasson 2003). However, the direct impact of\ud graduate education at the regional level is less clearly understood. This paper\ud investigates patterns that emerge from ‘first destination’ data for all UK universities\ud on where graduates begin work and what they actually do in successful regions.\ud It compares this with recent policy rhetoric, for example in the UK’s Industrial\ud Strategy (HM Government 2017), the Adonis Growth Review 2014 and the 2014\ud Witty Review of Universities and Growth. It illustrates reality using case studies of\ud Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire which are both adjacent geographically and among\ud the most competitive places in the UK, albeit with rather different HEIs. It addresses\ud the issue of spatial differences, examining how different patterns of skills matching\ud emerge even in adjacent regions. It also reflects on spatial mobility: whether and how\ud the migratory behaviour of skills influences education-job match.

WOS: 000434263000007, PubMed: 29766772, BACKGROUND Embolic strokes of undetermined source represent 20% of ischemic strokes and are associated with a high rate of recurrence. Anticoagulant treatment with rivaroxaban, an oral factor Xa inhibitor, may result in a lower risk of recurrent stroke than aspirin. METHODS We compared the efficacy and safety of rivaroxaban (at a daily dose of 15 mg) with aspirin (at a daily dose of 100 mg) for the prevention of recurrent stroke in patients with recent ischemic stroke that was presumed to be from cerebral embolism but without arterial stenosis, lacune, or an identified cardioembolic source. The primary efficacy outcome was the first recurrence of ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke or systemic embolism in a time-to-event analysis; the primary safety outcome was the rate of major bleeding. RESULTS A total of 7213 participants were enrolled at 459 sites; 3609 patients were randomly assigned to receive rivaroxaban and 3604 to receive aspirin. Patients had been followed for a median of 11 months when the trial was terminated early because of a lack of benefit with regard to stroke risk and because of bleeding associated with rivaroxaban. The primary efficacy outcome occurred in 172 patients in the rivaroxaban group (annualized rate, 5.1%) and in 160 in the aspirin group (annualized rate, 4.8%) (hazard ratio, 1.07; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.87 to 1.33; P=0.52). Recurrent ischemic stroke occurred in 158 patients in the rivaroxaban group (annualized rate, 4.7%) and in 156 in the aspirin group (annualized rate, 4.7%). Major bleeding occurred in 62 patients in the rivaroxaban group (annualized rate, 1.8%) and in 23 in the aspirin group (annualized rate, 0.7%) (hazard ratio, 2.72; 95% CI, 1.68 to 4.39; P, BayerBayer AG; Janssen Research and Development, Supported by Bayer and Janssen Research and Development.
