Objective: Although the improper disposal of unused and expired medications represents a global environmental concern, its significance is often underestimated. This research delves into the practices and factors related to the management of unused and expired medications. Methods: Data was collected through a comprehensive survey of Thai households, with 400 structured questionnaires. Multiple regression was then employed to analyze the data. Results: Findings show an intriguing paradox. The participants in the survey demonstrated commendable knowledge regarding the appropriate management of unused or expired medications. Yet, this knowledge was not sufficiently put into practice. This study identifies the factors that have a positive influence on proper medication disposal practices, such as age, level of education, attitude, and perception. Surveyed participants exhibited a tendency to retain unused medications and discard expired ones with household waste. Most of them showed a low degree of medication management, pointing to the need for targeted interventions. Conclusion: This research provides tangible benefits for policymakers, healthcare practitioners, and researchers addressing waste management paradigms. In terms of policy, the study highlights the need for comprehensive interventions, including medication take-back systems, infrastructure development, and educational initiatives. Policymakers are urged to bridge the gap between knowledge and behavior by promoting access to collection points for proper medication disposal to avoid perpetuating the cycle of suboptimal medication management. This study explores how sustainable practices in restaurants affect consumer behavior through the Stimulus-Organism-Response (S-O-R) model. It defines sustainability with multi-faceted dimensions of sustainable food, waste management, energy/water conservation, and social engagement. This research also examines how positive emotions and perceived value mediate the relationship between consumers’ perceptions of sustainability and their behavior. Results show that sustainable practices positively impact perceived value and emotions, influencing consumer intentions toward the restaurant. The research extends the S-O-R model to restaurant sustainability and offers insights for managers to enhance customer experience. The study highlights the need for restaurants to effectively communicate their sustainability efforts, emphasizing the importance of integrating sustainability into all aspects of restaurant operations and marketing. The current change in battery technology followed by the almost immediate adoption of lithium as a key resource powering our energy needs in various applications is undeniable. Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are at the forefront of the industry and offer excellent performance. The application of LIBs is expected to continue to increase. The adoption of renewable energies has spurred this LIB proliferation and resulted in a dramatic increase in LIB waste. In this review, we address waste LIB collection and segregation approaches, waste LIB treatment approaches, and related economics. We have coined a "green score" concept based on a review of several quantitative analyses from the literature to compare the three mainstream recycling processes: pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical, and direct recycling. In addition, we analyze the current trends in policymaking and in government incentive development directed toward promoting LIB waste recycling. Future LIB recycling perspectives are analyzed, and opportunities and threats to LIB recycling are presented. Lithium-ion battery (LIB) waste management is an integral part of the LIB circular economy. LIB refurbishing & repurposing and recycling can increase the useful life of LIBs and constituent materials, while serving as effective LIB waste management approaches. A combined effort by governments, industries and end-users will be integral in improving LIB waste collection rates which are largely lacking. A developed pseudo technical green score concept highlights direct recycling as a preferable recycling approach based on various life cycle assessment indicators. AbstractThis study explores how female chefs in professional kitchens manage food waste in their predominantly masculine occupational culture. By adopting the Process-Person-Context-Time (PPCT) model and applying the method of in-depth, semi-structured interviews (n = 20), the study reveals the complex interplay of personal, organisational, and contextual influences on how female chefs in Turkey and England manage food waste. The study highlights the significance of proximal processes, and organisational and occupational socialization in shaping food waste management practices of female chefs. The study underscores the importance of gender dynamics, organizational size, and occupational culture in these practices. The need for integrating resourcefulness training in preparation for future generations of chefs is highlighted. The findings enable a better understanding of how professional kitchens can be advanced towards the fulfilment of such sustainable development goals as gender equality and resource efficiency. The study emphasizes the need to consider a broader cultural context in future research on sustainability in tourism and hospitality. Brunei, similar to other nations, encounters difficulties in effectively managing solid waste, with 70% of the waste ending up in landfills, 2% through composting, and the remainder being disposed of through conventional methods. The current landfill site is anticipated to reach its maximum capacity in 2025. Energy recovery from waste is crucial for Brunei since it can improve waste management, mitigate environmental consequences, produce economic advantages, bolster energy security, and promote a circular economy. This study aims to identify the potential for energy recovery through landfill gas generated from solid waste disposal in Brunei Darussalam. The study finds that Brunei Darussalam can produce 129 thousand tonnes of CO2e/year landfill gas. Utilising gas to generate electricity of 367 GWh could save 1.6 million USD annually. In addition, it also identifies the strengths and weaknesses of the existing solid waste management in Brunei Darussalam. Furthermore, it formulates a waste management policy in Brunei Darussalam by identifying relevant stakeholders to overcome the weakness. Introduction: Healthcare waste is any waste generated by healthcare facilities that is considered potentially hazardous to health. Solid healthcare waste is categorized into infectious and non-infectious wastes. Infectious waste is material suspected of containing pathogens and potentially causing disease. Non-infectious waste includes wastes that have not been in contact with infectious agents, hazardous chemicals, or radioactive substances, similar to household waste, i.e. plastic, papers and leftover foods. This study aimed to investigate solid healthcare waste management practices and develop guidelines to improve solid healthcare waste management practices in Ethiopia. The setting was all health facilities found in Hossaena town. Method: A mixed-method study design was used. For the qualitative phase of this study, eight FGDs were conducted from 4 government health facilities, one FGD from each private health facility (which is 37 in number), and forty-five FGDs were conducted. Four FGDs were executed with cleaners; another four were only health care providers because using homogeneous groups promotes discussion. The remaining 37 FGDs in private health facilities were mixed from health professionals and cleaners because of the number of workers in the private facilities. For the quantitative phase, all health facilities and health facility workers who have direct contact with healthcare waste management practice participated in this study. Both qualitative and quantitative study participants were taken from the health facilities found in Hossaena town. Result: Seventeen (3.1%) health facility workers have hand washing facilities. Three hundred ninety-two (72.6%) of the participants agree on the availability of one or more personal protective equipment (PPE) in the facility "the reason for the absence of some of the PPEs, like boots and goggles, and the shortage of disposable gloves owes to cost inflation from time to time and sometimes absent from the market". The observational finding shows that colour-coded waste bins are available in 23 (9.6%) rooms. 90% of the sharp containers were reusable, and 100% of the waste storage bins were plastic buckets that were easily cleanable. In 40 (97.56%) health facilities, infectious wastes were collected daily from the waste generation areas to the final disposal points. Two hundred seventy-one (50.2%) of the respondents were satisfied or agreed that satisfactory procedures are available in case of an accident. Only 220 (40.8%) respondents were vaccinated for the Hepatitis B virus. Conclusion: Hand washing facilities, personal protective equipment and preventive vaccinations are not readily available for health workers. Agri-food processing industries generate a significant amount of food waste during different stages of processing. Sustainable food loss and waste (FLW) management aims to reduce, reuse, and recover the waste generated. To successfully implement strategies capable of pursuing these goals there is the need to connect agri-food processing industries with possible stakeholders in the use of waste generated. Primary processing centres are an example of industries that generate waste from the processing of fruits and vegetables. A model able to increase the environmental, economic, and social benefits of FLW reuse with appropriate strategies is proposed in this study. It is based on a multicriteria decision-making approach and a business-to-business web platform to support decision makers in identifying the best FLW management strategies from a quantity reduction and/or sustainability maximization perspective. Background Methods Results Conclusions People with intellectual disability (ID) demonstrate persistent challenges around developing life skills. Immersive virtual reality (IVR) is gaining interest as a tool for training life skills as it enables individuals to engage in hands‐on learning in a safe, controlled and repeatable environment. However, there are concerns about the potential drawbacks of IVR, such as cybersickness and practical challenges with using the equipment, which may hinder its widespread adoption in educational settings. The current study aimed to compare the effectiveness of training in IVR and a non‐immersive virtual environment for improving real‐world skills in people with ID.In the present study, 36 adults (16 female, 20 male) with ID were recruited from a disability organisation. Participants completed a real‐world assessment of waste management skills before and after training in either the IVR or non‐immersive group.Consistent with our hypotheses, the IVR group scored significantly higher in the real‐world assessment after virtual training (d = 1), and at the 1‐week follow‐up (d = 1.12), compared with the non‐immersive group. Further analyses showed that the IVR group, but not the non‐immersive group, significantly improved performance in the real‐world assessment across timepoints.The findings indicate that IVR was more effective for improving and retaining real‐world waste management skills. Ciprofloxacin (CIP), a commonly used antibiotic, is frequently detected in water bodies and the natural environment. The profound health consequences of CIP have led to growing attention focusing on environmental concerns. Adsorption is highly preferred because of its adaptability and remarkable efficiency in removing CIP. Therefore, the current work focuses on synthesizing an eco-friendly and economical adsorbent for removing CIP. The work aims to remove CIP using zeolite X (ZX), synthesized from dolochar, and subsequently modified ZX into iron-modified zeolite X (FeZX) via ion exchange. The synthesized FeZX had a crystallinity of 82.701%, an average pore size of 5.917 nm, a micropore volume of 0.298 cc/g, a micropore area of 451.807 m2/g, and a total surface area of 478.521 m2/g. The effect of parameters such as initial CIP concentration, pH, contact period, adsorbent dosage, and iron dosage was analyzed in the batch adsorption studies of CIP using ZX and FeZX. CIP removal of 37.786% was achieved using ZX; hence, the adsorption parameters were optimized to maximize the CIP removal using response surface methodology (RSM), specifically Box-Behnken Design (BBD) using FeZX. Maximum removal of 97.974% was achieved under optimum conditions of 8.06 pH, contact period of 59.422 min, CIP concentration of 17.117 mg/L, and adsorbent dosage of 0.478 g/L. Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models were the most accurate representations of the experimental data. For Swiss cities, connecting new migrants to basic services, like waste management, has emerged as an essential challenge toward their social and civic integration. Drawing on an ethnographic approach, this study investigates solid waste management integration within Zürich's Ethiopian and Eritrean migrant communities. Our findings suggest that new arrivals learn quickly and are driven by a motivation to integrate and adapt to expected norms. However, learning is often characterized by trial and error and accompanied by expensive mistakes. Barriers include a lack of translated informational material and insufficient opportunity for asylum seekers to learn rules and norms on waste management. We recommend making standardized materials available and ensuring clear communication in a language that newly arriving migrants can understand. We also recommend targeted training on life skills, including waste management behaviors for asylum seekers at residential processing centers so that refugees can be trained on expected norms before transitioning into an independent living situation. Background: The herbicide glyphosate is the most widely used active ingredient in pesticides globally. Residues have been found in people, livestock, food and animal feed, and in the environment, but little is known about glyphosate residue in manure-based fertilizer. We describe a feed-feces-fertilizer route of glyphosate contamination with negative impacts for horticultural production. This exposure can harm sensitive plants, such as tomato, and pose a risk to effective waste disposal and nutrient cycling along principles of the circular economy. We review the use and history of glyphosate and present a mixed methods research based on a real-world case from Finland where glyphosate residue in poultry manure fertilizer was suspected of inhibiting commercial organic tomato production. To test the fertilizer, we grew 72 'Encore' variety tomato plants for 14 weeks in a climate-controlled greenhouse according to the practices of the commercial grower. To ascertain awareness and potential contamination mitigation measures, we contacted five fertilizer companies with sales of biogenic fertilizer in Finland, two farming organizations, a feed company, and two government organizations working on nutrient cycling and agricultural circular economy. Results: The total harvest of tomatoes grown with fertilizer with the higher content of glyphosate residue was 35% smaller and the yield of first-class tomatoes 37% lower than that of the control, with lower glyphosate concentration. Two of the five fertilizer companies identified poultry manure as a source of glyphosate contamination. Companies with awareness of pesticide residues reported interest in establishing parameters for pesticide residues. Conclusions: The extent of glyphosate contamination of recycled fertilizers is unknown, but this study shows that such contamination occurs with negative impacts on crop production. Lack of testing and regulation to ensure that recycled fertilizers are free from harmful levels of glyphosate or other pesticides creates risks for agricultural producers. The issue is particularly acute for certified organic producers dependent on these products, but also for sustainable transitions away from mineral fertilizers in conventional farming. The example from Finland shows that a model of co-production between fertilizer producers and state regulatory agencies to establish safe limits can benefit both fertilizer producers and their customers. Background: Municipal solid waste (MSW) has increased dramatically in emerging economies like Bangladesh as a result of rapid urbanization and economic growth. Due to the high land requirements and nature of the waste, options of municipal waste management such as landfilling and waste-to-energy have proven to be expensive and inefficient. Previously, a pilot study on a waste-to-compost program in a decentralized facility was done in Dhaka to evaluate the effectiveness of municipal waste management. Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the life cycle costs (LCCs) of a waste-to-composting facility in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The objective was to ensure economical and effective management of MSW by comparing overall spending to the current and proposed waste management process. Methodology: In order to evaluate the potential of the planned decentralized compost plant, LCC methods using UNEP/SETAC guidelines are used in the study. This includes an additional analysis of environmental and operational costs and benefits. Result: The research found that the overall cost of the decentralized compost facility was $857,110, much less than the expenditures associated with landfilling and conventional composting methods in Dhaka. Conclusion: This study shows that a decentralized waste-to-compost plant may be a profitable option for dealing with municipal solid waste. Its potential to ease stress on municipal governments is highlighted by its much lower price tag. Insightful for policymakers and urban planners in emerging nations confronting comparable waste management difficulties, this research stresses the need to implement such creative, cost-effective approaches in quickly rising metropolitan cities. The utilization of biowastes for producing biochar to remove potentially toxic elements from water represents an important pathway for aquatic ecosystem decontamination. Here we explored the significance of thiol-functionalization on sugarcane bagasse biochar (Th/SCB–BC) and rice husk biochar (Th/RH–BC) to enhance arsenite (As(III)) removal capacity from water and compared their efficiency with both pristine biochars (SCB–BC and RH–BC). The maximum As(III) sorption was found on Th/SCB–BC and Th/RH–BC (2.88 and 2.51 mg g−1, respectively) compared to the SCB–BC and RH–BC (1.51 and 1.40 mg g−1). Relatively, a greater percentage of As(III) removal was obtained with Th/SCB–BC and Th/RH–BC (92% and 83%, respectively) at a pH 7 compared to pristine SCB–BC and RH–BC (65% and 55%) at 6 mg L−1 initial As(III) concentration, 2 h contact time and 1 g L−1 sorbent dose. Langmuir (R2 = 0.99) isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic (R2 = 0.99) models provided the best fits to As(III) sorption data. Desorption experiments indicated that the regeneration ability of biochars decreased and it was in the order of Th/SCB–BC (88%) > Th/RH–BC (82%) > SCB–BC (77%) > RH–BC (69%) up to three sorption–desorption cycles. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results demonstrated that the thiol (-S–H) functional groups were successfully grafted on the surface of two biochars and as such contributed to enhance As(III) removal from water. Spectroscopic data indicated that the surface functional moieties, such as -S–H, − OH, − COOH, and C = O were involved to increase As(III) sorption on thiol-functionalized biochars. This study highlights that thiol-grafting on both biochars, notably on SCB–BC, enhanced their ability to remove As(III) from water, which can be used as an effective technique for the treatment of As from drinking water. The beneficiation and valorization of coal fines is an important element that has to be considered in coal waste management. This review aims to assess the potential ecological impacts that arise due to coal fines dumping and the various methods that can be used for value addition and beneficiation of the coal fines for domestic and industrial use. The PRISMA method was used for the identification and inclusion of studies in the review and studies which focused on coal fines production, utilization, and their effects on the environment which were included in the review. The review showed that several technologies such as briquetting, pelletization, coal–water slurry, brickmaking, and fluidized bed technology have been developed in an effort to reduce the quantities of coal fines in the environment as they are an ecological threat through air, water, and soil pollution. Plastic products are now essential commodities, yet their widespread disposal leads to environmental and human health effects, particularly in developing nations. Therefore, developing nations require comprehensive studies to assess the current state of plastic and plastic waste production to enhance plastic waste management practices. This review analyzes the import and export of plastic and the production of plastic waste in Rwanda, aiming to improve waste management practices. This review used open-access papers, reports, and websites dealing with plastic waste management. In this review, 58 articles from the Web of Science and 86 from other search engines were consulted to write this review. The findings revealed that the daily estimated plastic waste produced per person ranges between 0.012 and 0.056 kg. The estimated amount of plastic waste generated per person per year in Rwanda could be between 4.38 and 20.44 kg. Plastic waste accounts for between 1 and 8% of the total municipal solid waste produced per person per day in the country, which ranges from 219 to 255.5 kg. The average annual amount of imported plastics could reach 568.2881 tons, whereas the average quantity of exported plastics could reach 103.7414 tons. This shows that plastic management practices have not yet adopted technically advanced or improved practices, which should concern efforts to protect our environment. Anaerobic digestion (AD) of food waste (FW) is considered an environmentally sustainable process that can divert the disposal of FW to landfill and prevent greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in managing the FW. Although several studies have attempted to demonstrate the AD of FW, low methane yields and a high incidence of process instability have been reported due to the rapid generation and accumulation of volatile fatty acids (VFAs). This paper reviews the recent research and development with high variation in FW composition, such as the carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratio and, consequently, the effect of its physicochemical composition on process performance and methane yields. The paper highlights the significance of optimizing the anaerobic co-digestion (AcoD) of FW with carbon-rich substrates such as garden waste (GW) and/or the addition of trace elements as strategies that can improve the process performance and methane yields from FW. This review focuses on the factors effecting the feasibility of food organics and garden organics (FOGO) as a substrate for methane production. The review also critically analyses the prospects of enhancement of biomethane yield by optimizations of the impactful parameters. The progress in research related to these methods and identifying existing limitations to efficient AD of FOGO are the key findings of this review. This review also assesses the impact of nanotechnology on the process performance of the digester. The integration of FO and GO in AD processes has demonstrated enhanced biogas yields, improved process stability, and better waste management outcomes compared to the digestion of either substrate alone. Despite these advantages, challenges such as feedstock variability, process optimization, and the need for advanced pretreatment methods remain. Addressing these issues through continued research and technological innovations will be crucial for maximizing the efficiency and scalability of AD systems. The consistent rise of the per capita waste generation rate has led to an escalation of waste quantities and the need to expand waste disposal methods. Efforts to develop clean and affordable energy systems are increasingly linked to waste-to-energy as part of the transition to a circular economy (CE). A resource-efficient waste-to-energy business model within a CE offers a variety of environmentally friendly waste management options based on their overall environmental impacts but also makes efficient use of available resources and technologies to convert different types of waste into energy, which helps reduce the adverse effects on the environment and create additional energy sources. This research aims to identify innovative waste management solutions to foster the implementation of CE and a more resource-efficient business model. The research methodology is based on qualitative and quantitative research, triangulation, material flow assessment, and systems dynamics. The value of this study is within the analysis of existing waste-to-energy plant case studies to identify a set of recommendations and appropriate business models for the countries that are at an early stage of evaluation of such facilities. This study found that waste-to-energy plants are critical to achieving the EU's waste disposal targets by 2035. The findings highlight the importance of supporting mechanisms in the waste sector, such as structural funds, as the industry primarily focuses on societal health and safety and environmental protection, alongside resource efficiency and circularity potential. This study explores the intersection of waste management and sustainable fuel production, focusing on the pyrolysis of plastic waste, specifically polystyrene. We examine the physicochemical parameters of the resulting waste plastic pyrolytic oils (WPPOs), blended with kerosene to form a potential alternative fuel for gas turbines. Our findings reveal that all WPPO blends lead to increased emissions, with NOX rising by an average of 61% and CO by 25%. Increasing the proportion of WPPO also resulted in a higher exhaust gas temperature, with an average rise of 12.2%. However, the thrust-specific fuel consumption (TSFC) decreased by an average of 13.8%, impacting the overall efficiency of waste-derived fuels. In addition, the demand for intensive care, increasing life expectancy and surgical interventions, complex comorbidities and ecological crisis make it necessary to make critical care more sustainable.To explore the perspectives of nurses working in surgical intensive care units regarding responsible medical waste management, energy and medication consumption.This qualitative descriptive study was conducted in surgical intensive care units of a university hospital in Turkey in November 2023. Twenty‐three nurses filled in an introductory form and participated in a semi‐structured interview. Data were analysed using inductive content analysis.Three main themes were determined: environmentally sustainable intensive care, prevention of waste in intensive care; responsible consumption and recycling; suggestions for institutional and individual behavioural change regarding environmental sustainability.The majority of nurses lack knowledge about sustainable development goals. However, in the intensive care unit, they provided effective and creative solutions for medical waste management, energy and medication consumption and individual and institutional behavioural change regarding environmental sustainability.Sustainability strategies should be created in institutions to ensure responsible medical waste management, energy and medicine consumption and reduce carbon footprint. In accordance with this purpose, ‘Green teams’ including unit‐based doctors, nurses and paramedics should be established. In recent years, the environmental impact of pharmaceutical residues has emerged as a pressing global concern, catalyzed by their widespread usage and persistence in aquatic ecosystems. Among these pharmaceuticals, acyclovir (ACV) stands out due to its extensive prescription during medical treatments for herpes simplex virus, chickenpox, and shingles, as well as its heightened usage amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. ACV is excreted largely unchanged by the human body, leading to significant environmental release through wastewater effluents. The urgency of addressing ACV's environmental impact lies in its potential to persist in water bodies and affect aquatic life. This persistence underscores the critical need for effective degradation strategies that can mitigate its presence in aquatic systems. This study focuses on employing sodium hypochlorite as an oxidative agent for the degradation of ACV, leveraging its common use in wastewater treatment plants. Our research aims to explore the kinetics of ACV degradation, identify and characterize its degradation byproducts, and optimize the conditions under which complete degradation can be achieved. Proper waste sorting is crucial for biodegradable plastics (BDPs) recycling, whose global production is increasing dynamically. BDPs can be sorted using near-infrared (NIR) sorting, but little research is available about the effect of surface contamination on their NIR spectrum, which affects their sortability. As BDPs are often heavily contaminated with food waste, understanding the effect of surface contamination is necessary. This paper reports on a study on the influence of artificially induced surface contamination using food waste and contamination from packaging waste, biowaste, and residual waste on the BDP spectra. In artificially contaminated samples, the absorption bands (ADs) changed due to the presence of moisture (1352–1424 nm) and fatty acids (1223 nm). In real-world contaminated samples, biowaste samples were most affected by contamination followed by residual waste, both having altered ADs at 1352–1424 nm (moisture). The packaging waste-contaminated sample spectra closely followed those of clean and washed samples, with a change in the intensity of ADs. Accordingly, two approaches could be followed in sorting: (i) affected wavelength ranges could be omitted, or (ii) contaminated samples could be used for optimizing the NIR database. Thus, surface contamination affected the spectra, and knowing the wavelength ranges containing this effect could be used to optimize the NIR database and improve BDP sorting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Waste treatment and utilization are closely related to the ecological environment of the sustainable earth. China has issued a series of relevant laws, regulations, and standards around waste treatment and recycling at present. The waste treatment and utilization have been continuously improved to construct the waste recycling system. However, the imperfect legal and regulatory of waste recycling, and the low efficiency of industrialization have restricted the efficient treatment and utilization of waste in China. It is very necessary to draw on the experiences from of the developed countries in the concepts, policies, technologies, and management on of waste treatment and utilization. Among them, Japan is at the forefront of waste treatment and utilization in the world. This article aims to review the current situation of waste generation, treatment, and utilization in Japan, with the an emphasis on the anaerobic fermentation for biogas production, aerobic composting for fertilizer production, and food waste feed conversion. The results show that a significant downward trend was found in the amount of waste that generated and ultimately treated in Japan since 2000, especially with the promotion of waste classification and recycling. The final disposal volume of waste decreased by about 77% (13 million tons) in 2019, compared with 2000. The waste recycling rate was about 43%, with an increase of 7 percentage points. Anaerobic digestion, aerobic composting, and functional feed technologies were industrialized and applied at the international leading level in Japan. In addition, an in-depth analysis was provided for the rich experience and practical practices in the waste treatment and utilization. Great importance was also attached to the binding role of laws and regulations. A comprehensive regulatory system was established to cover the entire waste recycling chain. The sSpecific and clear provisions were provided for the effective waste management. The sustainable industry was greatly contributed to the stable and efficient operation in of a sound recycling and payment, particularly for an operational subsidy and product policies. In terms of technological innovation, a strong sense of leadership was achieved in the traditional technologies, such as biogas production and incineration power generation. The iIndustrial operations were also observed in new technologies, such as kitchen waste feed conversion and biological hydrogen production, indicating strong technological innovation. The guiding role was also obtained in the science popularization and education. The systematic and multi-level science popularization activities were effectively enhanced the environmental awareness, the concept of 'whoever produces, pays', public participation, and joint maintenance of environmental protection. Finally, some suggestions were made to fully learn from the successful experience and practices in the waste treatment and utilization. The priority principle of 3R (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle) was followed to construct a complete waste recycling, from the aspects of laws and regulations, technological innovation, operational construction, and conceptual transformation. The textile industry contributes significantly to the expansion of the world economy, however, it is also notorious for producing large amounts of trash and harming the environment. Effective waste management techniques depend on having a thorough understanding of the forms and makeup of waste from the textile sector. The objective of this paper is to study effluent wastewater technologies to efficiently treat and control the wastewater produced during textile production operations. It is well known that the textile industry generates vast amounts of wastewater, some of which may be contaminated with heavy metals, chemicals, dyes, and organic compounds. This effluent can have serious negative effects on the environment if it is not adequately treated, including contaminating soil and water sources, removing aquatic life, and possibly endangering human health. Due to the inclusion of dyes, heavy metals, and other chemicals, the discharge of untreated or improperly treated effluent from textile processes leads to water contamination. Textile waste can leak hazardous compounds into the environment and contaminate the soil, both of which have an impact on air quality. The environmental impact of the textile industry is further exacerbated by the energy and resource use involved in production. At several points in the textile supply chain, waste is generated. Fibre trimmings, fly waste, and yarn waste are produced during the fibre production, spinning, and weaving operations. There are numerous ways and technologies for treating wastewater, including advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), biological treatment systems, and membrane-based technologies. The formation of eco-friendly materials and advancements in recycling technology help to make the textile industry more closed-loop and sustainable. Background: Catastrophic health expenditures condensed the vital concern of households struggling with notable financial burdens emanating from elevated out-of-pocket healthcare expenditures. In this regard, this study investigated the nature and magnitude of inpatient healthcare expenditure in India. It also explored the incidence and determinants of inpatient catastrophic health expenditure. Methodology: The study used the micro-level data collected in the 75th Round of the National Sample Survey on 93 925 households in India. Descriptive statistics were used to examine the nature, magnitude and incidence of inpatient healthcare expenditure. The heteroscedastic probit model was applied to explore the determinants of inpatient catastrophic healthcare expenditure. Results: The major part of inpatient healthcare expenditure was composed of bed charges and expenditure on medicines. Moreover, results suggested that Indian households spent 11% of their monthly consumption expenditure on inpatient healthcare and 28% of households were grappling with the complexity of financial burden due to elevated inpatient healthcare. Further, the study explored that bigger households and households having no latrine facilities and no proper waste disposal plans were more vulnerable to facing financial burdens in inpatient healthcare activity. Finally, the result of this study also ensure that households having toilets and safe drinking water facilities reduce the chance of facing catastrophic inpatient health expenditures. Conclusions: A significant portion of monthly consumption expenditure was spent on inpatient healthcare of households in India. It was also conveyed that inpatient healthcare expenditure was a severe burden for almost one fourth of households in India. Food waste raises severe concerns all around the globe. Thus, several researchers employed various food waste additives in the earthen matrix to improve their performance, decrease energy consumption, and efficient waste management. Therefore, this study evaluates the Tea Waste (T.W.) additive in producing unfired clay brick by adding different ratios in the brick clay mixtures 2.5 %, 5 %, 7.5 %, and 10 % of the weight. Samples were prepared and dried under natural laboratory conditions at 20o C for 7 days until weight and shrinkage stabilization, followed by oven-dried for 48 h at 60 oC. Several tests were performed to examine the physical and mechanical characteristics of the samples, including flexural strength, density, compressive strength, linear shrinkage, capillary water absorption, thermal conductivity, and the U.P.V. The results demonstrated that porosity and shrinkage slightly increased. While density, flexural strength, and compressive strength values decrease. In addition, the thermal conductivity increased depending on the T.W. content. In addition, samples containing 2.5 % and 5 % of T.W. give better compressive strength results above 3.5 MPa, which is the least limit required according to the Indian standards IS 1077, while T.W. additive of 7.5 % and 10 % did not fulfill the standard's strength requirement and therefore could be used for isolation only due to the increased amount of porosity that improves the thermal conductivity. The results indicated that samples with suitable mechanical and physical properties could achieve a suitable amount of T.W. it is recomenned that the porous structure of the clay brick body impacted the clay brick's properties and can be an effective alternative to porosity makers for lightweight insulating brick production. Growing global concern about how to dispose of wind turbine blades has sparked an investigation into more sustainable alternatives. This research delves into finding eco-friendly solutions for managing the waste generated by wind turbine blades, specifically by exploring options for repurposing them. To put this into action, this study has focused on a New Zealand wind farm with 196 wind turbine blades at the end of its life cycle. Through a thorough review of documents, 60 potential ways were identified to repurposing these blades. Options falling under the downcycling category were excluded, thus narrowing down to 45 promising solutions to repurpose. Futher 7 practically applied global solutions are identified. Implementing these repurposing solutions would divert 331 tonnes of waste material from landfills from the New Zealand Wind Farm. This study is significant because it highlights the potential for a circular and sustainable approach and provides an example of how wind turbine blade waste can be diverted from landfill. The findings of this study contribute to practical insights and support initiatives across New Zealand to encourage the adoption of wind turbine blade repurposing. With rapid urbanization growth, considerable amounts of construction waste are generated on an annual basis, posing significant economic and environmental challenges worldwide. Re-cycling construction waste is a sustainable way for waste disposal, leading to the necessity of meticulous planning of recycling centers. A well-designed plan for constructing recycling centers can effectively improve the recycling rate of construction waste while minimizing investment. This paper formulates a two-stage stochastic model for planning recycling centers with the objective of maximizing the recycling rate under different scenarios. This study comprehensively considers various uncertain factors, such as the amount of construction waste generated and the demand for recycled materials. A case study of Guangzhou is used for validation, which demonstrates the effectiveness of the developed model in planning recycling center construction. The comparison between the proposed model and a conventional mean value model shows the importance of accounting for uncertainties. Specifically, the derived results indicate that 7% more construction waste is recycled with the same investment in constructing recycling centers. Additionally, via a sensitivity analysis, valuable managerial insights on investing resources in recycling center construction are provided to decision makers. There has recently been a growing concern about developing an environmentally friendly lifestyle (EFL) through suitable education arrangements on different media types. In this study, we propose a research model to compare the effectiveness of using traditional media and social media in promoting and engaging young people with such educational information. We collected survey data from 400 participants from Hong Kong and Guam to test the proposed model using structural equation modeling. Our findings show the effectiveness of social media in engaging young people to practice an EFL through environmental involvement and other practicing concerns, as well as through value co-creation on social media. Yet, traditional media is a more effective tool for disseminating such information to young people than social media. The relatively consistent results obtained from data collected from Hong Kong and Guam show the generalizability of the research model, showing the importance of using both traditional media and social media to engage with young people with EFL information. In this study, the impact of bioplastic design on anaerobic digestion for biogas production was investigated. This research aims to facilitate the integration of bioplastics into a circular economy, which is why our study proposes considering not only aspects related to their degradation in the formulation but also ensuring efficient behavior in anaerobic digestion plants. Thermoplastic starch (TPS) samples, derived from different starch sources and formulated with varying concentrations of calcium carbonate and thicknesses, were subjected to anaerobic digestion tests. Three key parameters were explored: the influence of filler concentration, the effect of sample thickness, and the role of starch origin. Biogas production and kinetics were assessed using biochemical methane potential (BMP) tests. The results reveal that calcium carbonate concentration negatively influenced the methane production rate, reaching 30 NmL/gVS/day for the filler-free sample, highlighting the importance of understanding filler effects on anaerobic digestion. Additionally, thicker samples exhibited slower biogas production, with a rate of 25 NmL/gVS/day compared to 30 NmL/gVS/day for the thinnest sample, emphasizing the relevance of sample thickness in influencing digestion kinetics. The starch origin did not yield significant differences in biogas production, providing valuable insights into the feasibility of using diverse starch sources in bioplastic formulations. This systematic literature review (SLR) examines the integration of circular economy (CE) principles into the agri-food supply chain over the past 20 years. The review aims to consolidate existing knowledge, identify research gaps, and provide actionable insights for future research. A comprehensive search across major databases yielded 1200 articles, which were screened, filtered, and assessed, resulting in a final selection of 100 high-quality studies. This review highlights the significant potential of the CE to enhance sustainability, reduce waste, and improve resource efficiency in the agri-food sector. Today, with the increase in population, technological developments, industrialization and urbanization, problems related to waste management (WM) have become increasingly important to a sustainable and global clean environment. The gradual deterioration of the quality of environmental elements and the increase in environmental problems have caused societies to focus more on environmental problems. Waste management is a form of management that includes the prevention, non-prevention, reuse, recovery, and disposal of domestic, medical, hazardous, and non-hazardous wastes. This study aims to prioritize critical success factors (CSFs), via the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP), in industrial waste management and to determine the most important critical success factor. The four main criteria and 23 sub-criteria were scored by the AHP method according to the opinions of five environmental engineers. After determining critical success factors, survey questions were prepared to make employees rank these factors. While the "national/local waste management strategies and policies" factor was the most important critical success factor according to environmental engineers, the most important critical success factor for employees was "enterprise waste management strategies and policies". This paper provides a comprehensive evaluation of the environmental impact of implementing the beverage container deposit refund system on marine and coastal litter along the Latvian coastline. It incorporates data and insights from the assessment of deposit fractions littered in coastal areas during the post-season autumn period (weeks 3–4 in October and week 1 in November) in three monitoring sessions from 2021 (before the introduction of the DRS in Latvia) to 2023 (post-introduction). In 2022, a 43% overall decrease in selected public coastal areas was observed, with significant reductions at 11 out of 17 sites. This positive trend continued in 2023, showcasing a further 22% decrease compared to 2022 and a substantial 56% decrease compared to 2021. This study delves into the specific impact on different material types of beverage containers, reporting significant decreases in plastic and aluminium litter fractions. While glass beverage container litter showed a smaller decrease, overall positive trends continued in 2023. However, the situation with aluminium cans remained challenging, especially in border areas with Lithuania and Estonia. This study emphasizes that beverage containers with identifiable deposit system labels constitute a minority of the total litter pressure, underscoring the need for ongoing efforts to address containers without deposit labels, particularly in specific border areas. The findings provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of the deposit system in mitigating coastal litter, contributing to sustainable waste management practices in Latvia. A major issue recurrent in sustainability ensuring concerns is pollution due to human activities, mainly related to the reduction in waste generation. The present study aims to identify students' awareness of waste management, their daily routines in separately collecting recyclable waste, and their behaviors leading to reducing wasteful consumption in campus residential living, in a large university in the Western part of Romania, to channel the strategic plan of the university and the efforts of institutional teams dealing with the issues of waste management and sustainability. The methodology consists of an analysis of waste management in the university campus hosting around 6000 students in 16 dormitories, and of an anonymous online survey mapping the self-perceived behavior of students in solid waste management. Data from 1172 valid responses are refined through factorial analysis. While recycling behavior seems to be largely shared by the respondents, with more than 50% declaring that they always reuse recyclables, separate collection of waste is typical for only a quarter of the sample. Therefore, a vigorous intervention is needed to guide young adults' behavior towards sustainability choices. Campus greening needs to join interventions from the university, in charge of campus life in the selected case, city administration, waste management companies, and the student body. The findings are useful to explore the possible directions for action to increase or contribute to territorial sustainability in the socio-ecological context of Timisoara, the largest university city in the western part of Romania through educational, managerial, and policy interventions, based on local partnerships and collaborations, in accordance with SDG 17. Waste categorization and recycling are critical approaches for converting waste into valuable and functional materials, thereby significantly aiding in land preservation, reducing pollution, and optimizing resource usages. However, real-world classification and identification of recyclable waste face substantial hurdles due to the intricate and unpredictable nature of wastes, as well as the limited availability of comprehensive waste datasets. These factors limit efficacy of the existing research work in the domain of waste management. In this paper, we utilize semantic segmentation at individual pixel level and introduce a semi-supervised metod for authentic waste classification scenarios, leveraging the Zerowaste dataset. We devise a non-standard data augmentation strategy that mimics the ever-changing conditions of real-world waste environments. Additionally, we introduce an adaptive weighted loss function and dynamically adjust the ratio of positive to negative samples through a masking method, ensuring the model learns from relevant samples. Lastly, to maintain consistency between predictions made on data-augmented images and the original counterparts, we remove input perturbations. Our method proves to be effective, as verified by an array of standard experiments and ablation studies, achieved an accuracy improvement of 3.74% over the baseline Zerowaste method. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to an unprecedented increase in pharmaceutical drug consumption and plastic waste disposal from personal protective equipment. Most drugs consumed during the COVID-19 pandemic were used to treat other human and animal diseases. Hence, their nearly ubiquitous presence in the soil and the sharp increase in the last 3 years led us to investigate their potential impact on the environment. Similarly, the compulsory use of face masks has led to an enormous amount of plastic waste. Our study aims to investigate the combined effects of COVID-19 drugs and microplastics from FFP2 face masks on important soil processes using soil microcosm experiments. We used three null models (additive, multiplicative, and dominative models) to indicate potential interactions among different pharmaceutical drugs and mask MP. We found that the multiple-factor treatments tend to affect soil respiration and FDA hydrolysis more strongly than the individual treatments. We also found that mask microplastics when combined with pharmaceuticals caused greater negative effects on soil. Additionally, null model predictions show that combinations of high concentrations of pharmaceuticals and mask MP have antagonistic interactions on soil enzyme activities, while the joint effects of low concentrations of pharmaceuticals (with or without MP) on soil enzyme activities are mostly explained by null model predictions. Our study underscores the need for more attention on the environmental side effects of pharmaceutical contamination and their potential interactions with other anthropogenic global change factors. Alcoholysis of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) waste to produce monomers, including methanolysis to yield dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) and glycolysis to generate bis-2-hydroxyethyl terephthalate (BHET), is a promising strategy in PET waste management. Here, we introduce an efficient PET-alcoholysis approach utilizing an oxygen-vacancy (Vo)-rich catalyst under air, achieving space time yield (STY) of 505.2 gDMT·gcat−1·h−1 and 957.1 gBHET·gcat−1·h−1, these results represent 51-fold and 28-fold performance enhancements compared to reactions conducted under N2. In situ spectroscopy, in combination with density functional theory calculations, elucidates the reaction pathways of PET depolymerization. The process involves O2-assisted activation of CH3OH to form CH3OH* and OOH* species at Vo-Zn2+–O–Fe3+ sites, highlighting the critical role of Vo-Zn2+–O–Fe3+ sites in ester bond activation and C–O bond cleavage. Moreover, a life cycle assessment demonstrates the viability of our approach in closed-loop recycling, achieving 56.0% energy savings and 44.5% reduction in greenhouse-gas emissions. Notably, utilizing PET textile scrap further leads to 58.4% reduction in initial total operating costs. This research offers a sustainable solution to the challenge of PET waste accumulation. Polyester waste is increasingly accumulating in the environment, and alcoholysis recycling offers a sustainable management solution. Waste management in Lira City, Uganda faces significant challenges, particularly in the area of waste collection. Pollution and health risks from uncollected waste are rampant, posing serious threats to human health and the environment. This persistent problem demands urgent attention and effective solutions to improve waste collection and safeguard the well-being of the community and the natural surroundings. This study aimed to assess households' willingness to pay for improved waste collection services, examine their waste management practices, and identify influencing factors. We employed a multistage sampling technique to randomly select 585 household heads and conducted key informant interviews with city officials and private waste collectors. Data analysis was conducted with STATA 17 and results showed that 48.12% of households were willing to pay an average of UGX 3012 ($0.84) per month for better services. Factors including education level, occupation, distance to waste collection sites, and environmental awareness significantly influenced this willingness. The study highlights a significant gap in public awareness and understanding of efficient solid waste management practices and concludes that enhancing public awareness is crucial for improving environmental health and safety in Lira City. Present study assessed the growth of two plant species and ion uptake by them grown on different proportion of industrial solid waste and garden soil. The industrial waste having high concentration of chemicals were used with garden soil at different proportion i.e. 0% (T0), 5% (T1), 10% (T2), 15% (T3) and 20% (T4). Two species namely Conocarpus erectus (alien plant) and Dodonaea viscosa (indigenous) were used as test plants in pot study. Different parameters including growth, physiology, and anatomy of plants and concentration of cations (Na+, K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+) in the plant shoot and root were measured at different time duration (initial, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th month). The key objective of the study was to use these plants to establish their plantations on the barren lands where industrial solid wastes were being disposed of. C. erectus showed better growth than D. viscosa, as well as more uptake of ions. A significant increase in plant growth was observed in fourth month in T1, where plant height reached 24.5% and 46% for C. erectus and D. viscosa, respectively. At harvest, in C. erectus, no significant difference in the fresh (65–78 g) and dry weight (24–30 g) of the shoot was observed across treatments compared to the control. In D. viscosa, at the time of harvest, the fresh and dry weights of the root and shoot showed a strong, significantly decreasing pattern across T1, T2, and T3, leading to the death of the plant at T3 and T4. Further, optimum ratio of waste soil to garden soil was found as 10:90 and 20:80 to establish the plantations of D. viscosa and C. erectus, respectively in areas where such solid waste from industries are disposed. Sustainable waste management through composting has gain renewed attention since it could upcycle organic waste into valuable bio-organic fertiliser. This study explored the composition of fungal communities in leaf litter and organic waste composts ecosystems by employing advanced internal transcribed spacer (ITS) metagenomic profiling. This approach provides insights into the diversity, composition, and potential functions of these fungi, offering practical implications for optimising composting processes and enhancing sustainable waste management practices. Various organic composts were collected, including leaf litter composts, from different sources in Delhi-National Capital Region, India, and fungal microbiome composition were characterised through ITS profiling. Results revealed that leaf litter composts and cow dung manure had the highest fungal read counts, while kitchen waste compost had the lowest. Alpha diversity indices, including Chao1 and Shannon, exhibited differences in species richness and diversity among composts, though statistical significance was limited. The leaf composts had relatively higher alpha diversity than the other organic waste composts analysed. The study also identified dominant fungal genera specifically, Wallemia, Geotrichum, Pichia, Mycothermus, Mortierella, Aspergillus, Fusarium, and Basidiobolus, across the compost samples. The presence of beneficial fungal genera like Pichia, Geotrichum, Trichoderma, Mortierella, Basidiobolus, Aspergillus, and others were detected in leaf waste compost and the other organic waste composts. There was also presence of some pathogenic genera viz. Alternaria, Fusarium, and Acremonium, in these composts which underscored the need for proper composting practices and source selection to optimise soil fertility and minimise disease risks in agriculture. Remarkably, leaf compost has highest proportion of beneficial genera with least observed abundance of pathogens. On the other hand, the municipal organic waste compost has least proportion of beneficial genera with higher abundance of pathogens. Overall, these findings contributed to characterisation of composting processes, advancing waste management practices, and enhancing the use of leaf compost as a bio-organic fertiliser. This paper presents a detailed review of the plasma gasification process for waste disposal. Due to Shifting economies and consumerism culture, ample change can be seen across the globe in the form of rapid industrialisation and burgeoning urbanisation, which results in a massive increase in waste generation. Plasma gasification technology is an emerging solution for processing a wide range of waste making it a highly sustainable, efficient, and ecologically sound process. This literature review discusses the feasibility of the plasma gasification method and its superiority over other conventional waste disposal techniques. A comprehensive analysis of different methods of plasma generation for gasification is done in this literature review. The review paper presents a detailed coverup of the entire process of plasma gasification and post-processes. The article discusses the notable advancement, current scenario, and possibilities in plasma gasification methodology in terms of the design of plasma torch, modelling of gasifiers, generation of syngas, and power production. It provides an overview of advanced simulation tools helpful in the analysis of the Waste-to-Energy (WtE) process. This literature review aims to provide an overview of the recent advances in plasma gasification, highlighting the technical aspects, environmental benefits, and economic viability of the technology. Cheese whey is an industrial by-product that is generated in excess during the cheese production process in the dairy industry. Despite the potential utility of whey, it continues to pose environmental threats in the industry. This study comprehensively evaluates the utilization of two fermentation techniques (solid-state fermentation and submerged fermentation) for producing fungal biomass from cheese whey powder, employing Aspergillus oryzae, Rhizopus oryzae, and Neurospora intermedia for sustainable food production. It has been observed that submerged fermentation is more effective in increasing the protein content of whey powder compared to solid-state fermentation. The highest biomass yield was achieved with A. oryzae (5.29 g/L, 0.176 g biomass/g substrate), followed by N. intermedia (3.63 g/L, 0.121 g biomass/g substrate), and R. oryzae (1.9 g/L, 0.063 g biomass/g substrate). In the bubble column reactor, the protein content of the substrate (78.65 g/kg) increased by 165.54 and 176.69% with A. oryzae (208.85 g/kg) and N. intermedia (217.62 g/kg), respectively. This study has demonstrated that whey powder can be converted into protein-rich biomass through fungal bioconversion. When molten, used vehicle tyres are unable to decompose or be recycled. Despite global efforts to find new uses for these materials, many worn tyres are still dumped in landfills. Therefore, this study proposes using ground tyre rubber (GTR) as a fill material for recycled polypropylene 3D printing filament. The filament composite's physical and mechanical properties will be assessed in this investigation. GTR is expected to give the filament elastic characteristics, which could lead to rubber-like filaments. This study filled recycled polypropylene (rPP) polymer matrix composites with GTR to make filament. The mechanical and physical properties of a 3D-printed specimen made from rPP and GTR filament with varying compositions were analysed. Compared to pure rPP, rPP/GTR samples with 3 wt% GTR had a maximum tensile strength of 716.76 MPa. The flexural test findings showed that rPP/GTR with 3 wt% GTR had the highest flexural strength at 80.53 MPa, followed by rPP/1 wt% GTR at 65.38 MPa. In physical tests, the rPP/GTR at 5 wt% GTR had the highest water absorption at 5.41 %, and the wt% of GTR connected directly with water absorption. This study has shown that affordable, environmentally friendly rPP/GTR filaments can be developed with less amount of GTR content (3 wt%) and used for 3D printing applications, helping to lessen the impact of plastic and waste while having valuable mechanical and physical properties that are comparable to those of the pure polypropylene material produced. This study investigates the impact of low-temperature top-lit updraft reactor chamber size on GNSBC yield and properties. For this study, the volumes of carbonization chamber (2,364, 2,013, 1,468, and 970 cm3) in a biomass-fueled TLUD biomass gasifier were varied, and the resulting biochar was analyzed using SEM, EDX, and FTIR. The novelty of this work lies in its investigation of the unexplored impact of carbonization reactor compartment size on groundnut shell biochar properties and yield, driven by the need to optimize biochar production efficiency and support sustainable waste management practices. The results showed that carbonization chamber size variation significantly affected GNSBC yield, with an initial increase followed by diminishing returns. An increase in the carbonization compartment size led to decreased carbonization duration, increased carbonization temperature, increased porosity, and decreased oxygen content. SEM analysis revealed consistent amorphous and multi-layered morphological features across BC samples, while EDX analysis confirmed high carbon content in the samples. FTIR spectroscopy confirmed the presence of oxygenated functional groups suitable for pollutant adsorption, supporting GNSBC's role in environmental remediation and industrial processes. Charru mussel, an invasive species found along the coastal areas of Baroy, Lanao del Norte, the Philippines, is commonly processed into the local delicacy known as “amahong,” with the shells often discarded as waste from this practice. This study aims to extract chitosan through demineralization of charru mussel shells using 1.25 N HCl, deproteinization using 3% NaOH yielding chitin, and deacetylation of chitin using 45% NaOH. The result shows a chitin yield of 21.27 ± 0.98% and a chitosan yield of 11.07% ± 0.66%. ATR-FTIR analysis confirmed the characteristic bands and functional groups associated with chitosan. SEM imaging revealed an amorphous and uneven particle shape, and TGA results exhibited thermal degradation at 550 °C, at which point chitosan breaks down. The synthesized chitosan displayed antibacterial activity at all concentrations (100, 200, and 300 µg/mL) against S. aureus while ineffective against E. coli. The waste problem in Surabaya City is caused by the large amount of waste generation, so efforts to reduce at the source of waste must be made, by increasing public awareness and participation. Community participation in Tenggilis Mejoyo Subdistrict, Surabaya in sorting at the source is 37%. In this study, community perceptions of waste management will be analyzed by comparing perceptions between female and male communities. The research was conducted in this sub-district with stratified random sampling, with descriptive statistical analysis to provide an overview of the variables that have been measured, then displayed in the form of graphs and diagrams. This study also tested hypotheses for 11 problem formulations with six variables, namely three independent construct variables (X), two intervening variables, and one dependent construct variable (Y). The results showed that most of the women did not know what household-specific waste was and did not sort their waste because they did not have time. The type of waste that is mostly segregated is small electronic waste and female respondents tend to sell segregated specific waste to collectors. As for men, most of them do not know what household-specific waste is and do not segregate waste because they do not have time. The most segregated type of waste is small electronic waste and male respondents tend to keep the segregated specific waste. Based on the results of hypothesis testing, it can be concluded that in women, most variables affect each other or have a positive influence. Knowledge and norms do not affect intention, while attitude and perception do not affect behavior. In men, only a small number of variables influence each other or have a positive influence. Freshwater pollution is a major concern in Ghana, directly impacting human health. However, the underlying drivers of exposure and risks are not comprehensively understood, emphasizing the severity and impact of these diseases. This study assessed the interaction between water and human health, specifically focusing on the risk factors for waterborne diseases and the drivers of water pollution among residents near the Tano River Basin, Ghana. A sample size of 400 households was selected from five communities within the basin based on their proximity to the Tano River. In addition, the study combined both spatial and non-spatial data sources to map potential flood zones for the basin. The study found that inadequate sanitation, poor hygiene practices, and contamination from illegal mining were the primary causative factors of waterborne diseases. Additionally, floods and improper waste management significantly contributed to disease outbreaks. The flood susceptibility analysis indicated that areas highly susceptible to flooding cover 21.2% of the basin, predominantly in the southern part. The results highlight the urgent need for comprehensive interventions to address the drivers of waterborne diseases.
