Search

Most bulge-dominated galaxies host black holes with masses that tightly correlate with the masses of their bulges. This may indicate that the black holes may regulate galaxy growth or vice versa, or that they may grow in lock-step. The quest to understand how, when, and where those black-holes formed motivates much of extragalactic astronomy. Here we focus on a population of galaxies with active black holes in their nuclei (active galactic nuclei or AGN), that are fully or partially hidden by dust and gas: the emission from the broad line region is either completely or partially obscured with a visual extinction of 1 or above. This limit, though not yet precise, appears to be the point at which the populations of AGN may evolve differently. We highlight the importance of finding and studying those dusty AGN at redshifts between 1 and 3, the epoch when the universe may have gone through its most dramatic changes. We emphasize the need for future large multiplexed spectroscopic instruments that can perform dedicated surveys in the optical and NIR to pin down the demographics of such objects and study their reddening properties, star-formation histories, and excitation conditions. (Abridged) The Maunakea Spectroscopic Explorer (MSE) is an end-to-end science platform for the design, execution and scientific exploitation of spectroscopic surveys. It will unveil the composition and dynamics of the faint Universe and impact nearly every field of astrophysics across all spatial scales, from individual stars to the largest scale structures in the Universe. Major pillars in the science program for MSE include (i) the ultimate Gaia follow-up facility for understanding the chemistry and dynamics of the distant Milky Way, including the outer disk and faint stellar halo at high spectral resolution (ii) galaxy formation and evolution at cosmic noon, via the type of revolutionary surveys that have occurred in the nearby Universe, but now conducted at the peak of the star formation history of the Universe (iii) derivation of the mass of the neutrino and insights into inflationary physics through a cosmological redshift survey that probes a large volume of the Universe with a high galaxy density. MSE is positioned to become a critical hub in the emerging international network of front-line astronomical facilities, with scientific capabilities that naturally complement and extend the scientific power of Gaia, the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope, the Square Kilometer Array, Euclid, WFIRST, the 30m telescopes and many more., Comment: 9 chapters, 301 pages, 100 figures. Weyl semimetals are 3D phases of matter with topologically protected states that have remarkable macroscopic transport behaviors. As phonon dynamics and electron-phonon scattering play a critical role in the electrical and thermal transport, we pursue a fundamental understanding of the origin of these effects in type-I Weyl semimetals NbAs and TaAs. In the temperature-dependent Raman spectra of NbAs, we reveal a previously unreported Fano lineshape, a signature stemming from the electron-phonon interaction. Additionally, the temperature dependence of the $A_{1}$ phonon linewidths in both NbAs and TaAs strongly deviate from the standard model of anharmonic decay. To capture the mechanisms responsible for the observed Fano asymmetry and the atypical phonon linewidth, we present first principles calculations of the phonon self-energy correction due to the electron-phonon interaction. Finally, we investigate the relationship between Fano lineshape, electron-phonon coupling, and locations of the Weyl points in these materials. Through this study of the phonon dynamics and electron-phonon interaction in these Weyl semimetals, we consider specific microscopic pathways which contribute to the nature of their macroscopic transport., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

A key characteristic of quantum spin liquids(QSL) is the presence of fractional excitations related to their entanglement properties, yet experimental verification of their statistics is missing. For example, in the potential Kitaev spin liquid, RuCl3 experiments uncovered signs of fractional particles, though not their Fermi statistics. Here we employ Raman scattering to reveal the true nature of the magnetic excitations, using improved experimental methods and analysis to remove the influence of laser heating and thermal fluctuations. Via the energy loss and gain spectra, we extract the energy and temperature dependence of the Raman susceptibility to prove RuCl3's magnetic response is given by pair creation of fermionic excitations. Furthermore, by comparing with quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) results for the exact Kitaev limit, we are able to discern the energy and temperature range where additional interaction terms are important. Our results open new directions in QSL research by providing a new way to investigate fractional excitations and the importance of terms causing spinon confinement., Comment: 29 pages, 4 figures

The topological properties of hardcore bosons on ribbons of honeycomb lattice are studied using quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We map out a rich phase diagram with the superfluid and insulator phases at various fillings. Particularly, it is revealed that the insulator state at half filling is a topological bosonic state, which is characterized by a nontrivial Berry phase and a pair of edge states. We provide intuitive picture to understand this topological bosonic insulator state by showing that it can be adiabatically mapped to a topological fermionic model. It is also shown that the topological edge states are robust against weak interactions beyond the hardcore repulsion. Large quantum simulators, with sufficiently many qubits to be impossible to simulate classically, become hard to experimentally validate. We propose two tests of a quantum simulator with Heisenberg interaction in a linear chain of spins. In the first, we propagate half of a singlet state through a chain of spin with a ferromagnetic interaction and subsequently recover the state with an antiferromagnetic interaction. The antiferromagnetic interaction is intrinsic to the system while the ferromagnetic one can be simulated by a sequence of time-dependent controls of the antiferromagnetic interaction and Suzuki-Trotter approximations. In the second test, we use the same technique to transfer a spin singlet state from one end of a spin chain to the other. We show that the tests are robust against parametric errors in operation of the simulator and may be applicable even without error correction., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures
