104. Study on the tolerance and adaptation of rats to Angiostrongylus cantonensis infection

Abstract

Angiostrongylus cantonensis (A. cantonensis) is the most common infectious agent causing eosinophilic meningitis. As an important food-borne parasitic disease, angiostrongyliasis cantonensis is an emerging infectious disease which brings severe harm to central nerve system of human. Rat, one of the few permissive hosts of A. cantonensis known to date, plays an indispensable role in the worm's life cycle. However, the tolerance and adaptation of rat to A. cantonensis infection is rarely understood. In this study, we infected rats with different numbers the third stage larvae (L3) of A. cantonensis and explored their tolerance through analysis on survival curve, neurological function score, and detection of pathological damages in organs including the brain, lung, and heart of the animals. Results indicated that rats' survival condition worsens, and body weight dropped more significantly as more worms were used for infection. Death appeared in groups infected with 80 and more A. cantonesnsis per rat. Morris water maze revealed that the neurological function of rats damaged gradually with increasing infection number of A. cantonensis larvae. When the number of infected parasite exceeded 240 per animal, rats showed significant neurological impairments. Collection of A. cantonensis from rat lung after 35 days of infection implied an upper limit for worm entry, and the average length of worm was inversely proportional to the infection amount, while the ratio between female and male worms was positively related to the infection number. The degree of pulmonary and cardiac inflammation was proportional to the infection number of A. cantonensis. Meanwhile, there existed considerable amount of adult worms in rat's right atrium and right ventricle, leading to a right heart myocardial inflammation. The present study firstly reports the tolerance and adaptation of rat, a permissive host of A. cantonensis to its infection, which will not only provide accurate technical parameters for maintaining A. cantonensis life cycle under laboratory conditions but also help unveil the underlying mechanism of the distinct pathological outcomes in the permissive and non-permissive hosts with A. cantonensis infection.

Abstract

A full-scale biofilm system using fluidized-carriers integrated with anaerobic-anoxic–aerobic process (treatment capacity of 3.75 × 105 m3 d−1) was used for municipal wastewater treatment. The results indicated relatively higher removal efficiencies of 86% total nitrogen (TN), 97% ammonium (NH4-N) and 97% total phosphorus (TP) were achieved, with 0.32 mg L−1 TP, 0.81 mg L−1 NH4-N and 8.07 mg L−1 TN in the effluent, which meet the Class A of Discharge standard of pollutants for municipal wastewater treatment plant (GB18918-2002) of China. Microbial results indicated the dominant microorganisms in the suspended sludge were Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes at phylum level and β-Proteobacter at class level. The dominant microorganism in the biofilm was Proteobacteria at phylum level, with γ-Proteobacter (17.5%), β-Proteobacter (14%) and δ-Proteobacter (13.08%) distributed at class levels. The presence of Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes in this system may be related with the phosphorus removal. A reddish color biofilm was formed on the surface of fluidized-carriers in the anaerobic tank and showed specific anammox ability, this may be related with the dominance of 0.0278% Planctomycetaceae at family level and 0.0278% Planctomycetales at order level. Besides the denitrification effects, the possible anammox bacteria present in the anaerobic tank might have also contributed to high nitrogen removal efficiency.

111. Information Theory in Formation Control: An Error Analysis to Multi-Robot Formation

Abstract

Multi-robot formation control makes prerequisites for a team of robots to execute complex tasks cooperatively, which has been widely applied in both civilian and military scenarios. However, the limited precision of sensors and controllers may inevitably cause position errors in the finally achieved formation, which will affect the tasks undertaken. In this paper, the formation error is analyzed from the viewpoint of information theory. The desired position and the actually achieved position are viewed as two random variables. By calculating the mutual information between them, a lower bound of the formation error is derived. The results provide insights for the estimation of possible formation errors in the multi-robot system, which can assist designers to choose sensors and controllers with proper precision.

Abstract

Expanding the number of nucleotides in DNA increases the information density of functional DNA molecules, creating nanoassemblies that cannot be invaded by natural DNA/RNA in complex biological systems. Here, we show how six‐letter GACTZP DNA contributes this property in two parts of a nanoassembly: 1) in an aptamer evolved from a six‐letter DNA library to selectively bind liver cancer cells; and 2) in a six‐letter self‐assembling GACTZP nanotrain that carries the drug doxorubicin. The aptamer‐nanotrain assembly, charged with doxorubicin, selectively kills liver cancer cells in culture, as the selectivity of the aptamer binding directs doxorubicin into the aptamer‐targeted cells. The assembly does not kill untransformed cells that the aptamer does not bind. This architecture, built with an expanded genetic alphabet, is reminiscent of antibodies conjugated to drugs, which presumably act by this mechanism as well, but with the antibody replaced by an aptamer. Abstract

The electrical jointing of superconducting wires / tapes is a key issue for the construction of the scientific superconducting magnet that required high field stability, such as NMR, FTICR-MS and some inertial navigators. In this paper, the preliminary experiment of electromagnetic formed NbTi superconducting joint was done. The fabrication technique was researched by changing the parameters. The joint resistances were tested in liquid helium using coil current decay method. The contact resistance properties of the superconducting joint were investigated. The plastic deformation and the electrical contact characteristics of the NbTi superconducting joint were discussed. The results show that the electromagnetic formed NbTi superconducting joint has the excellent low-resistance property and good repeatability.

Abstract

Nickel nanowires were successfully prepared on a large scale at room temperature through a simple and low cost liquid reduction method with the application of an external magnetic field of 0.3 T. The effect of uniform magnetic field on the morphology and properties of magnetic nickel was studied. The morphology, crystal structure, and static magnetic properties were measured by SEM, XRD, VSM, respectively. The results show that the sizes of the nickel nanowires as-prepared are about 100 nm in diameter, and several microns in length were obtained and they are mainly composed by fcc structure. The saturation magnetization of the nickel nanowires is 36 emu/g, less than that of bulk nickel crystal, and the coercivity of them is 186 emu/g, larger than that of bulk crystal with the mole ratio of sodium borohydride to nickel sulfate is 1:1000. This kind of nanowires array has potential applications with the special one-dimensional structures.

Abstract

In this paper, A novel nonlinear state estimation algorithm called redundant adaptive robust filter (RARCKF) is proposed for the state estimation of the maneuvering target in which the square-root of the cubature kalman filter (SRCKF), like the other traditional Gaussian domain Bayesian filters, cannot achieve high accuracy of state estimation when it suffers from long-standing model errors or the model of the system takes rapid and abrupt unknown changes. As a result of using RARCKF, the algorithm can make sure the validity of the filter while in the case of the model prediction suffers with long-standing errors or the target takes maneuvering. Simulation results in the section 4 indicate RARCKF outperforms over the SRCKF both in the numerical accuracy and the convergence rate.

Abstract

The fundamental principles governing photovoltaic properties of nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs) are essential for developing high-performance polymer solar cells. In this work, using three heteroheptacene-based acceptors (M-series) as model compounds, we systematically study the implication of heteroatoms in the heteroheptacene core on the molecular packing, morphology, optoelectronic, photophysical, and photovoltaic properties of the NFAs. It is found that replacing the oxygen atoms at the inner positions of the heteroheptacene core with sulfur atoms leads to the molecular packing mode change from a linear two-dimensional (2D) brickwork structure to a three-dimensional (3D) reticulated motif, which facilitates the formation of a desirable active layer with nanostructured phase separation morphology and improved charge transport. Meanwhile, the down-shifted highest occupied molecular orbital energy level of M36 induced by the sulfur substitution, matches better with that of polymer donor PM6 thereby leading to more efficient exciton dissociation and charge transfer. As a result, the best-performing photovoltaic device based on M36 affords an outstanding efficiency of 17%, which is among the highest values reported for all the ADA-type NFAs. Our work reveals the important role of the heteroatoms in the heteroheptacene core in constructing the 3D network of ADA-type NFAs, and the structure-property relationships herein shall provide an important guidance for designing high-performance NFAs. Abstract

A facile strategy has been developed to synthesize double-shelled Zn(OH)2 nanoflowers (DNFs) at room temperature. The nanoflowers were generated via conversion of Cu2O nanoparticles (NPs) using ZnCl2 and Na2S2O3 by a simple process. Outward diffusion of the Cu2+, produced by an oxidation process on the surface of NPs, and the inward diffusion of Zn2+ by coordination and migration, eventually lead to a hollow cavity in the inner NPs with a double-shelled 3D hollow flower shapes. The thickness of the inner and outer shells is estimated to be about 20 nm, and the thickness of nanopetals is about 7 nm. The nanoflowers have large surface areas and excellent adsorption properties. A highly efficient nanozyme system, termed hollow multipod Cu(OH)2 superstructure (HMPS), has been developed via direct conversion from irregular nanoparticles. The HMPS displayed a body size around 150 nm and branch lengths in the range of 150–250 nm. Based on the excellent catalytic properties of HMPS, we developed a simple and highly sensitive colorimetric assay to detect urine glucose, and the results are in good agreement with hospital examination reports. 150. Self-deposition of Pt nanocrystals on Mn3O4 coated carbon nanotubes for enhanced oxygen reduction electrocatalysis.

Abstract

Developing catalysts with high electrocatalytic activity for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has recently attracted much attention because the sluggish ORR limits the performance and commercialization of current PEMFCs and metal–air batteries as well. Herein, a facile approach was reported to synthesize Mn3O4 nanoparticle coated carbon nanotubes (Mn3O4/CNTs) and self-deposit well-dispersed Pt nanocrystals on Mn3O4/CNTs to obtain Pt/Mn3O4/CNTs hybrid catalysts via in situ reduction of support matrix with no need of any capping agent and additional reducing agent. As a result of good dispersion of uncapped Pt nanocrystals, interconnected carbon nanotube conductive network, and possible synergetic co-catalytic effect from heterojunction interfaces of Pt nanocrystals and Mn3O4, the as-prepared Pt/Mn3O4/CNTs hybrid catalysts demonstrated much enhanced electrocatalytic activity for ORR. The reported strategy may inspire the development of new high efficient hybrid electrocatalysts in a cost-effective way with the potential to harness the metal/oxide interaction to improve the performance of catalysts.
