Abstract

We report the first measurement of the flux-averaged cross section for charged current coherent $\pi^{+}$ production on carbon for neutrino energies less than 1.5 GeV to a restricted final state phase space region in the T2K near detector, ND280. Comparisons are made with predictions from the Rein-Sehgal coherent production model and the model by Alvarez-Ruso {\it et al.}, the latter representing the first implementation of an instance of the new class of microscopic coherent models in a neutrino interaction Monte Carlo event generator. This results contradicts the null results reported by K2K and SciBooNE in a similar neutrino energy region. Abstract

We report on measurements of neutrino oscillation using data from the T2K long-baseline neutrino experiment collected between 2010 and 2013. In an analysis of muon neutrino disappearance alone, we find the following estimates and 68% confidence intervals for the two possible mass hierarchies: normal hierarchy: sin2θ23=0.514-0.056+0.055 and Δm322=(2.51±0.10)×10-3 eV2/c4 and inverted hierarchy: sin2θ23=0.511±0.055 and Δm132=(2.48±0.10)×10-3 eV2/c4. The analysis accounts for multinucleon mechanisms in neutrino interactions which were found to introduce negligible bias. We describe our first analyses that combine measurements of muon neutrino disappearance and electron neutrino appearance to estimate four oscillation parameters, |Δm2|, sin2θ23, sin2θ13, δCP, and the mass hierarchy. Frequentist and Bayesian intervals are presented for combinations of these parameters, with and without including recent reactor measurements. At 90% confidence level and including reactor measurements, we exclude the region δCP=[0.15,0.83]π for normal hierarchy and δCP=[-0.08,1.09]π for inverted hierarchy. The T2K and reactor data weakly favor the normal hierarchy with a Bayes factor of 2.2. The most probable values and 68% one-dimensional credible intervals for the other oscillation parameters, when reactor data are included, are sin2θ23=0.528-0.038+0.055 and |Δm322|=(2.51±0.11)×10-3 eV2/c4.

Abstract

We report on measurements of neutrino oscillation using data from the T2K long-baseline neutrino experiment collected between 2010 and 2013. In an analysis of muon neutrino disappearance alone, we find the following estimates and 68% confidence intervals for the two possible mass hierarchies: normal hierarchy: sin2θ23=0.514\ud +0.055\ud −0.056 and Δm\ud 2\ud 32=(2.51±0.10)×10−3 eV2/c4 and inverted hierarchy: sin2θ23=0.511±0.055 and Δm\ud 2\ud 13=(2.48±0.10)×10−3 eV2/c4. The analysis accounts for multinucleon mechanisms in neutrino interactions which were found to introduce negligible bias. We describe our first analyses that combine measurements of muon neutrino disappearance and electron neutrino appearance to estimate four oscillation parameters, |Δm2|, sin2θ23, sin2θ13, δCP, and the mass hierarchy. Frequentist and Bayesian intervals are presented for combinations of these parameters, with and without including recent reactor measurements. At 90% confidence level and including reactor measurements, we exclude the region δCP=[0.15,0.83]π for normal hierarchy and δCP=[−0.08,1.09]π for inverted hierarchy. The T2K and reactor data weakly favor the normal hierarchy with a Bayes factor of 2.2. The most probable values and 68% one-dimensional credible intervals for the other oscillation parameters, when reactor data are included, are sin2θ23=0.528\ud +0.055\ud −0.038 and |Δm\ud 2\ud 32|=(2.51±0.11)×10−3 eV2/c4.

Abstract

International audience; The Charged-Current Quasi-Elastic (CCQE) interaction, $\nu_{l} + n \rightarrow l^{-} + p$, is the dominant CC process at $E_\nu \sim 1$ GeV and contributes to the signal in accelerator-based long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments operating at intermediate neutrino energies. This paper reports a measurement by the T2K experiment of the $\nu_{\mu}$ CCQE cross section on a carbon target with the off-axis detector based on the observed distribution of muon momentum ($p_\mu$) and angle with respect to the incident neutrino beam ($\theta_\mu$). The flux-integrated CCQE cross section was measured to be $(0.83 \pm 0.12) \times 10^{-38}\textrm{ cm}^{2}$ in good agreement with NEUT MC value of ${0.88 \times 10^{-38}} \textrm{ cm}^{2}$. The energy dependence of the CCQE cross section is also reported. The axial mass, $M_A^{QE}$, of the dipole axial form factor was extracted assuming the Smith-Moniz CCQE model with a relativistic Fermi gas nuclear model. Using the absolute (shape-only) $p_{\mu}cos\theta_\mu$ distribution, the effective $M_A^{QE}$ parameter was measured to be ${1.26^{+0.21}_{-0.18} \textrm{ GeV}/c^{2}}$ (${1.43^{+0.28}_{-0.22} \textrm{ GeV}/c^{2}}$).

The flux-integrated CCQE cross section was measured to be hσi ¼ ð0.83 0.12Þ × 10−38 cm2. The energy dependence of the CCQE cross section is also reported. The axial mass, MQE A , of the dipole axial form factor was extracted assuming the Smith-Moniz CCQE model with a relativistic Fermi gas nuclear model. Using the absolute (shape-only) pμ- cos θμ distribution, the effective MQE A parameter was measured to be 1.26þ0.21−0.18GeV=c2(1.43þ0.28−0.22 GeV=c2).

Abstract

Mutations of the mouse Attractin (Atrn; formerly mahogany) gene were originally recognized because they suppress Agouti pigment type switching. More recently, effects independent of Agouti have been recognized: mice homozygous for the [Atrn.sup.mg-3J] allele are resistant to diet-induced obesity and also develop abnormal myelination and vacuolation in the central nervous system. To better understand the pathophysiology and relationship of these pleiotropic effects, we further characterized the molecular abnormalities responsible for two additional Atrn alleles, [Atrn.sup.mg] and [Atrn.sup.mg-L], and examined in parallel the phenotypes of homozygous and compound heterozygous animals. We find that the three alleles have similar effects on pigmentation and neurodegeneration, with a relative severity of [Atrn.sup.mg-3J] [is greater than] [Atrn.sup.mg] [is greater than] [Atrn.sup.mg-L], which also corresponds to the effects of the three alleles on levels of normal Atrn mRNA. Animals homozygous for [Atrn.sup.mg-3J] or [Atrn.sup.mg] but not [Atrn.sup.mg-L], show reduced body weight, reduced adiposity, and increased locomotor activity, all in the presence of normal food intake. These results confirm that the mechanism responsible for the neuropathological alteration is a loss--rather than gain--of function, indicate that abnormal body weight in Atrn mutant mice is caused by a central process leading to increased energy expenditure, and demonstrate that pigmentation is more sensitive to levels of Atrn mRNA than are nonpigmentary phenotypes.

Abstract

The Charged-Current Quasi-Elastic (CCQE) interaction, $\nu_{l} + n \rightarrow l^{-} + p$, is the dominant CC process at $E_\nu \sim 1$ GeV and contributes to the signal in accelerator-based long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments operating at intermediate neutrino energies. This paper reports a measurement by the T2K experiment of the $\nu_{\mu}$ CCQE cross section on a carbon target with the off-axis detector based on the observed distribution of muon momentum ($p_\mu$) and angle with respect to the incident neutrino beam ($\theta_\mu$). The flux-integrated CCQE cross section was measured to be $(0.83 \pm 0.12) \times 10^{-38}\textrm{ cm}^{2}$ in good agreement with NEUT MC value of ${0.88 \times 10^{-38}} \textrm{ cm}^{2}$. The energy dependence of the CCQE cross section is also reported. Abstract

HIZOA J0836–43 is an extreme gas-rich (MH I = 7.5 × 10^10 M☉) disk galaxy which lies hidden behind the strongly obscuring Vela region of the Milky Way. Utilizing observations from the Spitzer Space Telescope, we have found it to be a luminous infrared starburst galaxy with a star formation rate of ~ 21 M☉ yr^−1, arising from exceptionally strong molecular PAH emission (L7.7μ m = 1.50 × 10^9 L☉) and far-infrared emission from cold dust. The galaxy exhibits a weak mid-infrared continuum compared to other star-forming galaxies and U/LIRGs. This relative lack of emission from small grains suggests atypical interstellar medium conditions compared to other starbursts. We do not detect significant [Ne V] or [O IV], which implies an absent or very weak AGN. The galaxy possesses a prominent bulge of evolved stars and a stellar mass of 4.4(±1.4) × 10^10 M☉. With its plentiful gas supply and current star formation rate, a doubling of stellar mass would occur on a timescale of ~2 Gyr. Compared to local galaxies, HIZOA J0836–43 appears to be a "scaled up" spiral undergoing inside-out formation, possibly resembling stellar disk building processes at intermediate redshifts.
