This publication is a tentative edition of readings on Wildlife and Fish Conservation in Louisiana, and as such it forms part of one of the four units of study designed for an experimental high school course, the "High School Conservation Curriculum Project." The other three units are concerned with Forest Conervation, Soil and Water Conservation, and Mineral Conservation. Each of these units of study is designed to encompass a nine week period of time. This publication includes a teacher's guide section, and sections on the coastal resources of Louisiana, oysters, basic ecology, marsh management of wildlife, the alligator, Louisiana squirrels, rabbits, black bear, white-tailed deer, and wild turkey. Some of the readings have been taken from journals and others appear to have been written especially for this publication. This work was prepared under an ESEA Title III Contract. (BR)

This publication was prepared to accompany the revised "Wildlife and Fish Section" of "A Guide for Teaching Conservation Education in the Schools of Louisiana." Its purpose is to provide teachers with information about possible sources of teaching materials that can be obtained free or with only a small expenditure of funds. Each item listed is annotated with the purpose of providing teachers with information on which to base judgments as to what will best serve their purposes. Pamphlets, posters, charts, maps, and publications in series are among the items annotated. There is a source index which includes the address of each source. This list of natural resource use and management organizations in the United States and Canada is supplemented with indices to their major periodical publications and to individuals named in the directory. Sections of the directory deal with agencies of the U.S. government; organizations and commissions with international, national, regional, and interstate interests and responsibilities; and with government agencies and citizen groups with interests in one state. There is a separate Canadian section. Brief descriptive notes outline the interests, objectives, and responsibilities of most organizations listed. Names and addresses of officers are included. An appendix lists names and addresses of fish and game commissioners and directors in each state and territory of USA and Canada. (AL)

This reference catalog lists and describes 427 current or completed outdoor recreation and related environmental quality research projects. Projects are grouped into one of three categories: resources, economics, and user studies. The catalog is designed to assist scientists, administrators, planners and students by facilitating the exchange of information and research results. Indexes provided for the reader's benefit consist of subject, investigator, supporting agency and contracting agency. (BB)

Introducing students to different hawks and owls found in Wisconsin and building a basis for appreciation of these birds in their own environment is the purpose of this teacher's guide. Primarily geared for upper elementary and junior high grades, the concepts presented could be used in conjunction with the study of ecology. A filmstrip is employed to increase the student's knowledge and understanding of the essential role of these animals. A crucial point emphasized is the necessity for proper habitat in order for the birds of prey to survive, for if this habitat is changed or destroyed, the birds will be eliminated. Additional topics include bird characteristics, food requirements, life cycles, value of the birds in a natural community, and effects of man. The filmstrip is explained in its entirety, illustrating each frame and its accompanying script. Bracketed paragraphs provide the teacher with additional information. Also included are charts showing birds of prey found in Wisconsin, build-up of DDT residues in osprey eggs, abundance of breeding animals in a square mile, and resource materials. Two magazine articles about bald eagles and peregrine falcons are reproduced. The filmstrip is not included. This work was prepared under an ESEA Title III contract. (BL)

Although this manual was developed by Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) technicians in the management of TVA lands, it may be well utilized by private landowners interested in doing something for wildlife on their own property. The booklet includes basic information about wildlife in general and seven species in particular--the white-tailed deer, ruffed grouse, raccoon, and gray squirrel of the woodlands and the bobwhite quail, cottontail rabbit, and mourning dove found in the open fields. It suggests improvement practices which are inexpensive and may be scaled to individual interest and capacity. Pointers about wildlife around the home are also included. (BL)

Animals are the subject of the student resource unit which is to be used with high school vocational agriculture students. Animal housing and equipment, the first section, deals with controlled environment, energy requirements, esthetics, air, water, and noise. Animal waste and byproducts are covered in terms of Federal government program, some of which are reported. The public health and socioeconomic implications of animal waste disposal are described. Meat and poultry packing and dairy processing produce significant effluent. In discussing disease prevention by means of parasite and vector control, infectious diseases and their treatment are covered. Beneficial and harmful insects and their control are described. The importance of wild animals in terms of the damage they can do to agriculture and the land is significant, but the treatment of wildlife and social values are related. A Plenipotentiary Conference to Conclude and International Convention on Trade in Certain Species of Wildlife was held in Washington, D.C., February 12 through March 2, 1973. Its purpose was to prepare and adopt a convention on export, import, and transit of certain species of wild fauna and flora. Representatives and observers from 90 countries met in fulfillment of the recommendation stated in Resolution 99.3 of the U.N. Conference on the Human Environment, Stockholm, June, 1972. Included in this pamphlet are several items related to the conference: remarks made by Secretary of the Interior, Rogers C. B. Morton, on February 12; a message from President Nixon read by Secretary Morton that day; statements made on February 12 and March 2 by Russell E. Train, Chairman, Council on Environmental Quality, and head of the U.S. delegation; the report of the U.S. delegation; excerpts from the final act of the conference; text of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora; and statements from President Nixon and the U.S. Department of State for Senate approval of the Convention. The appendix lists endangered animals--species now threatened with extinction and those which may become so unless trade is subject to strict regulation. (BL)

In an attempt to improve the teaching of conservation in elementary and junior high schools, a set of integrated sequential core units was formulated and tested in five Wyoming school districts during the fall and early winter of 1968. Based on a total sample of 840 elementary students (38% usable response) and 960 junior high students (49% usable response), statistical analyses indicated that teachers' use of the guides and their classroom presentations were successful in stimulating student interest in conservation problems. With the exception of the unit for grade 6 on minerals and oils, which proved too difficult and will require rewriting, consistent student test performances in all school districts and in all other grades indicated that the materials are at an appropriate grade level of difficulty. Findings support the value of the sequential resource unit approach to both the teacher and the student. In addition to an introductory guide to Wyoming's natural resources and their management, complete curriculum core units for each grade are appended as follows: (1) Wildlife, (2) Water, (3) Soils, (4) Grassland, (5) Forests, (6) Minerals and Oil, (7) Pollution, (8) Human Resources, and (9) Environmental Usage. The comprehensive history of the Kansas Extension Service from 1868 is presented in three volumes and includes administration, information dissemination, club work, special area reports, personnel training, and continuing education. Administration involves such aspects as personnel, finances, organizational changes, cooperation with other agencies and organizations, and emergency programs. Personnel, program development, projects, and activities are discussed for extension home economics and 4-H activities. Special project areas reported include plant pathology; horticulture; animal, dairy, and poultry husbandry; entomology; rodent control and wildlife management; marketing; radio and television; land use planning; and emergency farm labor. Continuing education involves activities such as home study, evening college and extension classes, conferences and short courses, and technical and special services. (pt)

The projects are summarized and indexed according to subject, investigator, contracting agency, and supporting agency. The compilation is designed to assist scientists, administrators, planners, and students by facilitating the exchange of information and research results. Selection of projects was based on the relationship of the research to the field of outdoor recreation and environmental quality aspects of recreation resources. (BB)

Recreational use of wildland is growing rapidly and forms a major portion of the manager's job. About one-third of today's forestry students will be employed by land management agencies or by companies committed to the multiple-use concept. Education, course materials and the supply of forest management graduates have lagged considerably behind needs and the demand for published information on managerial skills and for qualified personnel is increasing. To help meet these needs, this report contains information on the current and expected nature of the recreation management job on the western national forests; judgments of recreation managers on educational deficiencies of forestry graduates and recommendations for changes in forestry education; basic philosophies of education and recreation management accepted as guides in course development; a general framework for the technical content of a course in wildland recreation management; and a group of 4 courses geared to the above factors. The proposed courses should provide educators with a useful source for preparing their own courses in recreation management within the multiple-use context. Four categories of literature were reviewed and utilized in implementing the project: methods of research in education, methods of job analysis, theory of education and curriculum development, technical components and education in wildland recreation management. Additional course recommendations are expected to appear in 1969 as a publication of the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station. (JS)

QUESTIONNAIRES WERE ADMINISTERED TO SELECTED REPRESENTATIVES OF THE FORESTRY, RURAL RECREATION, AND WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREAS OF PUBLIC AND PRIVATE ENTERPRISES IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA TO DETERMINE THE EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES AND TYPE OF TRAINING NEEDS REQUIRED FOR TECHNICAL, SKILLED, AND SEMISKILLED PERSONNEL. THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY WAS TO DETERMINE THE ROLE OF THE JUNIOR COLLEGE IN PROVIDING THE NECESSARY TECHNICIAN LEVEL TRAINING IN THE NATURAL RESOURCE AREAS. THE ANTICIPATED NUMBER OF FULL-TIME PLACEMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR 1970 WAS (1) FORESTRY--64 PROFESSIONAL, 209 TO 219 TECHNICAL, AND 65 TO 90 SKILLED AND SEMISKILLED, (2) RURAL RECREATION--8 PROFESSIONAL, 72-82 TECHNICAL, AND 40 SKILLED AND SEMISKILLED, AND (3) WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT--30 PROFESSIONAL, 20 TECHNICAL, AND 31 SKILLED AND SEMISKILLED. GENERAL EDUCATION ABILITIES IN COMMUNICATION SKILLS, APPLIED MATHEMATICS, PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT, TECHNICAL DRAWING, SKETCHING, AND READING MAPS AND BLUEPRINTS, WERE GENERALLY RATED VERY IMPORTANT FOR TECHNICIANS IN THE THREE AREAS. IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT (1) THERE IS A VERY DEFINITE NEED IN BOTH PRIVATE AND PUBLIC SECTORS FOR PEOPLE TRAINED AT THE TECHNICAL, SKILLED, AND SEMISKILLED LEVELS FOR THE FORESTRY, RURAL RECREATION, AND WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT FIELDS, ALTHOUGH THE GREATEST NEED IS AT THE TECHNICIAN LEVEL, AND (2) THE JUNIOR COLLEGES CAN OFFER NEEDED INSTRUCTION FOR TRAINING TECHNICIANS IN THESE AREAS.
