Linear properties of the toroidal Alfvén eigenmode (TAE) excited by energetic particles (EP) in a DIII-D tokamak experiment have been studied in global gyrokinetic particle simulations treating self-consistently kinetic effects of EP, thermal ions, and electrons. Simulation results of the TAE frequency and mode structure agree very well with the experimental measurements. The non-perturbative EP contribution induces a radial localization of the TAE mode structure, a break-down of mode radial symmetry, as well as a frequency dependence on the toroidal mode number. The simulations further demonstrate the dependence of the growth rate and mode structure on EP pressure gradients. The in-out asymmetry of the mode structure and the experimental identification of the poloidal harmonics have also been clarified.

Ultra-fine dry powder extinguishing agent (UDPEA) is a promising alternative to Halon agents in aviation firefighting. The formulation of UDPEAs should balance environmental friendliness and practical engineering requirements, including high extinguishing efficiency, excellent flowability, and prolonged anti-reignition. This study investigates the effects of three modification methods (single perfluorooctyl triethoxysilane (FOTS), single N-(3-Triethoxysilylpropyl)perfluoro(2,5-dimethyl-3,6-dioxanonanoyl)amide (PFPE), and a combination of FOTS and PFPE at various mass ratios (2.0:0.4, 1.6:0.8, 1.2:1.2, 0.8:1.6, 0.4:2.0) (g)) on the performance of sodium bicarbonate-based UDPEA. The results indicate that using FOTS or PFPE alone improves the water and oil contact angles, but still fails to meet the required hydrophobicity and oleophobicity standards, and it also reduces the flowability and fire-extinguishing capability. A combination of FOTS and PFPE at the 1:2 ratio yields the best performance, with the water and oil contact angles of 145.169° and 143.542°, respectively, the lowest flowability index (0.224), minimal extinguishing concentration and time (14.183 g/m3 and 1.976 s, respectively), which is only 52.7% and 68.3% of those of the unmodified UDPEA's (26.927 g/m3 and 2.893 s), and the longest anti-reignition time (68.5 s). In addition, the fire-extinguishing mechanisms (chemical inhibition and physical heat absorption) and anti-reignition mechanisms of the modified UDPEA (with the FOTS to PFPE ratio of 1:2) were revealed. This research aims to design an eco-friendly, high-performance UDPEA as an effective substitute for Halon extinguishing agents. Ultrafine KAl(OH)2CO3 dry powder (UDWP), as a novel high-temperature-resistant ultrafine dry powder fire extinguishing agent, has garnered significant attention in the field of aviation fire protection. However, its development has been hindered by its hydrophilicity, which leads to hygroscopicity, and its tendency for re-ignition due to oil deposition. Therefore, this study employs perfluorodecyltrimethoxysilane (PFDTMS) to modify the surface of UDWP, resulting in hydrophobic and oleophobic M-UDWP. The thermal stability and hydrophobicity of M-UDWP ensure its long-term stable storage in aircraft equipment compartments, thereby reducing aircraft maintenance costs. Additionally, its oleophobicity provides excellent anti-re-ignition performance, protecting aircraft power compartments from secondary fire damage. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses indicate that the PFDTMS modifier was successfully grafted onto KAl(OH)2CO3. Furthermore, M-UDWP exhibits a three-stage thermal decomposition process. The first-stage decomposition can be regarded as a single-step reaction, and the calculated kinetic parameters provide accurate predictions. Thermogravimetric analysis-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy-mass spectrometry (TG-FTIR-MS) results reveal that M-UDWP significantly produces H2O and CO2 during thermal decomposition, which is one of its core fire extinguishing mechanisms. For the combustion of #RP-3 and #RP-5 aviation kerosene, commonly found in aircraft engine nacelles, the extinguishing times required by M-UDWP are 243 ms and 224 ms, respectively, with minimum extinguishing concentrations (MEC) of 25.9 g/m3 and 23.4 g/m3, respectively. The study of M-UDWP's thermal stability aids in understanding its storage stability under high-temperature conditions and its fire extinguishing mechanisms in fire zones. The rapid growth of lithium (Li) dendrites has long hindered the development of all‐solid‐state lithium‐metal batteries (ASSLMB). Here, a composite soft carbon (SC)‐nano Si3N4 (SiN) interlayer (SC‐SiN) is designed for in situ formation of Li3N network (with high ionic conductivity/diffusivity) after lithium embedding in nano‐Si3N4, promoting the rapid migration of Li+ and guiding the metal Li to be deposited uniformly in a 3D manner within the interlayer. It can solve the problem of rapid consumption of Li+ and local charge accumulation at the interface of solid electrolyte and Li metal anode, thus avoiding the growth of Li‐dendrites. The resulting LCO/LPSCl/SC‐SiN‐Li ASSLMB achieves ultra‐high current density (12.5 mA cm−2) and ultra‐long cycle life (22 000 cycles with no degradation), as well as ultra‐high area capacity area capacity (15 mAh cm−2) and energy density (402.5 Wh kg−1), all of which break existing ASSLMB records. In addition, it is capable of 600 cycles at an areal capacity of 2.7 mAh cm−2 and 2 C (85.7% capacity retention). A pouch cell is also assembled to delivers high energy density (>320 Wh kg−1). These confirm the application potential of this configuration and are one of the most critical breakthroughs toward the commercialization of the ASSLMB. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Linear gyrokinetic simulation of fusion plasmas finds a radial localization of the toroidal Alfvén eigenmodes (TAEs) due to the nonperturbative energetic particle (EP) contribution. The EP-driven TAE has a radial mode width much smaller than that predicted by the magnetohydrodynamic theory. The TAE radial position stays around the strongest EP pressure gradients when the EP profile evolves. The nonperturbative EP contribution is also the main cause for the breaking of the radial symmetry of the ballooning mode structure and for the dependence of the TAE frequency on the toroidal mode number. These phenomena are beyond the picture of the conventional magnetohydrodynamic theory.

The shales of the Taiyuan Formation and Shanxi Formation in the North China Basin have good prospects for shale gas exploration and development. In this study, Well KP1 at the northern margin of the North China Basin was used as the research object for rock mineral, organic geochemical, and elemental geochemical analyses. The results show that brittle minerals in the shales of the Taiyuan Formation and Shanxi Formation are relatively rare (<40%) and that the clay mineral content is high (>50%). The average TOC content is 3.68%. The organic matter is mainly mixed and sapropelic. The source rocks of the Taiyuan Formation and Shanxi Formation are mainly felsic, and the tectonic background lies in the continental island arc area. The primary variables that influenced the enrichment of organic materials during the sedimentary stage of the Taiyuan Formation were paleosalinity and paleoproductivity. Paleosalinity acted as the primary regulator of organic matter enrichment during the sedimentary stage of the Shanxi Formation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Against the background of climate warming, marine heatwaves (MHWs) and terrestrial drought events have become increasingly frequent in recent decades. However, the combined effects of MHWs and terrestrial drought on CO2 uptake in marginal seas are still unclear. The East China Sea (ECS) experienced an intense and long-lasting MHW accompanied by an extreme terrestrial drought in the Changjiang basin in the summer of 2022. In this study, we employed multi-source satellite remote sensing products to reveal the patterns, magnitude, and potential drivers of CO2 flux changes in the ECS resulting from the compounding MHW and terrestrial drought extremes. The CO2 uptake of the ECS reduced by 17.0% (1.06 Tg C) in the latter half of 2022 and the Changjiang River plume region shifted from a CO2 sink to a source (releasing 0.11 Tg C) in July-September. In the majority of the ECS, the positive sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly during the MHW diminished the solubility of CO2 in seawater, thereby reducing CO2 uptake. Moreover, the reduction in nutrient input associated with terrestrial drought, which is unfavorable to phytoplankton growth, further reduced the capacity of CO2 uptake. Meanwhile, the CO2 sink doubled for the offshore waters of the ECS continental shelf in July-September 2022, indicating the complexity and heterogeneity of the impacts of extreme climatic events in marginal seas. This study is of great significance in improving the estimation results of CO2 fluxes in marginal seas and understanding sea–air CO2 exchanges against the background of global climate change.
