Abstract Background Cochrane, an organization dedicated to the production and dissemination of high-quality evidence on health, endeavors to reach consumers by developing appropriate summary formats of its systematic reviews. However, the optimal type of presentation of evidence to consumers is still unknown. Objective The aim of this study was to investigate consumer preferences for different summary formats of Cochrane systematic reviews (CSRs), using both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Methods Initially, we conducted three focus groups with medical students (n = 7), doctors (n = 4), and patients (n = 9) in 2017 to explore their health information search habits and preferences for CSR summary formats. Based on those findings, we conducted a randomized trial with medical students at the University of Split School of Medicine, Croatia, and with patients from three Dalmatian family practices to determine whether they prefer CSR blogshots (n = 115) or CSR plain language summaries (PLSs; n = 123). Results Participants in the focus groups favored brief and explicit CSR summary formats with fewer numbers. Although we found no difference in participants’ preferences for a specific summary format in the overall sample, subgroup analysis showed that patients preferred blogshots over PLSs in comparison to medical students (P = 0.003, eta squared effect size η2 = 0.04). Conclusion CSR summaries should be produced in a format that meets the expectations and needs of consumers. Use of blogshots as a summary format could enhance the dissemination of CSRs among patients. Trial registration The trial was registered in ClinicalTrials.gov , NCT03542201 . ABSTRACT Marine bacterioplankton represent a diverse assembly of species differing largely in their abundance, physiology, metabolic activity, and role in microbial food webs. To analyze their sensitivity to bottom-up and top-down controls, we performed a manipulation experiment where grazers were removed, with or without the addition of phosphate. Using amplicon-reads normalization by internal standard (ARNIS), we reconstructed growth curves for almost 300 individual phylotypes. Grazer removal caused a rapid growth of most bacterial groups, which grew at rates of 0.6 to 3.5 day−1, with the highest rates (>4 day−1) recorded among Rhodobacteraceae, Oceanospirillales, Alteromonadaceae, and Arcobacteraceae. Based on their growth response, the phylotypes were divided into three basic groups. Most of the phylotypes responded positively to both grazer removal as well as phosphate addition. The second group (containing, e.g., Rhodobacterales and Rhizobiales) responded to the grazer removal but not to the phosphate addition. Finally, some clades, such as SAR11 and Flavobacteriaceae, responded only to phosphate amendment but not to grazer removal. Our results show large differences in bacterial responses to experimental manipulations at the phylotype level and document different life strategies of marine bacterioplankton. In addition, growth curves of 130 phylogroups of aerobic anoxygenic phototrophs were reconstructed based on changes of the functional pufM gene. The use of functional genes together with rRNA genes may significantly expand the scientific potential of the ARNIS technique. IMPORTANCE Growth is one of the main manifestations of life. It is assumed generally that bacterial growth is constrained mostly by nutrient availability (bottom-up control) and grazing (top-down control). Since marine bacteria represent a very diverse assembly of species with different metabolic properties, their growth characteristics also largely differ accordingly. Currently, the growth of marine microorganisms is typically evaluated using microscopy in combination with fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). However, these laborious techniques are limited in their throughput and taxonomical resolution. Therefore, we combined a classical manipulation experiment with next-generation sequencing to resolve the growth dynamics of almost 300 bacterial phylogroups in the coastal Adriatic Sea. The analysis documented that most of the phylogroups responded positively to both grazer removal and phosphate addition. We observed significant differences in growth kinetics among closely related species, which could not be distinguished by the classical FISH technique.

In recent years, sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) have demonstrated beneficial renoprotective effects, which culminated in the recent approval of their use for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), following a similar path to one they had already crossed due to their cardioprotective effects, meaning that SGLT2i represent a cornerstone of heart failure therapy. In the present review, we aimed to discuss the pathophysiological mechanisms operating in CKD that are targeted with SGLT2i, either directly or indirectly. Furthermore, we presented clinical evidence of SGLT2i in CKD with respect to the presence of diabetes mellitus. Despite initial safety concerns with regard to euglycemic diabetic ketoacidosis and transient decline in glomerular filtration rate, the accumulating clinical data are reassuring. In summary, although SGLT2i provide clinicians with an exciting new treatment option for patients with CKD, further research is needed to determine which subgroups of patients with CKD will benefit the most, and which the least, from this therapeutical option.

The total antioxidant potential of a sample cannot be predicted from the antioxidant activity of its compounds; thus, scientists usually explain the overall activity through their combined effects (synergistic, antagonistic, or additive). Phenolic compounds are one of the most powerful and widely investigated antioxidants, but there is a lack of information about their molecular interactions. This study aimed to investigate the individual and combined antioxidant activity of equimolar mixtures (binary, ternary, quaternary, and quinary) of 10 phenolic acids (protocatechuic, gentisic, gallic, vanillic, syringic, p-coumaric, caffeic, ferulic, sinapic, and rosmarinic acid) at different concentrations using ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) assays. Gallic acid showed the highest antioxidant activity, determined using the FRAP assay (494–5033 µM Fe2+) and rosmarinic acid with the ORAC assay (50–92 µM Trolox Equivalents (TE)), while the lowest antioxidant potential was observed for p-coumaric acid (FRAP 24–113 µM Fe2+ and ORAC 20–33 µM TE). The synergistic effect (by FRAP) in the equimolar mixtures of hydroxybenzoic acids was confirmed for a large number of tested mixtures, especially at low concentrations. All mixtures containing gentisic acid showed a synergistic effect (28–89% difference). Using the ORAC method, only two mixtures of hydroxybenzoic acids showed an antagonistic effect, namely a mixture of gentisic + syringic acids (−24% difference) and gallic + vanillic acids (−30% difference), while all other mixtures showed a synergistic effect in a range of 26–236% difference. Among mixtures of hydroxycinnamic acids, the highest synergistic effect was observed for the mixtures of p-coumaric + ferulic acids and caffeic + sinapic acids with differences of 311% and 211%, respectively. The overall antioxidant activity of phenolic acids could be explained by the number or position of hydroxyl and/or methoxy functional groups as well as the compound concentration, but the influence of other parameters such as dissociation, intramolecular hydrogen bonds, and electron donating or withdrawing effect should not be neglected.

Accumulating data suggests that catestatin, an eclectic neuroendocrine peptide, is involved in the pathophysiology of primary hypertension (PH). Nevertheless, clinical studies concerning its role in PH are still scarce. Therefore, in the present study, we aimed to explore an association between serum catestatin levels, ambulatory blood pressure (BP) and arterial stiffness in patients with PH and healthy controls. In this single-center study, 72 patients aged 40–70 diagnosed with PH, and 72 healthy controls were included. In patients with PH, serum catestatin concentrations were significantly higher in comparison to the healthy controls (29.70 (19.33–49.48) ng/mL vs. 5.83 (4.21–8.29) ng/mL, p < 0.001). Untreated patients had significantly higher serum catestatin than patients treated with antihypertensive drugs (41.61 (22.85–63.83) ng/mL vs. 24.77 (16.41–40.21) ng/mL, p = 0.005). Multiple linear regression analysis showed that serum catestatin levels retained a significant association with mean arterial pressure (β ± standard error, 0.8123 ± 0.3037, p < 0.009) after model adjustments for age, sex and body mass index. Finally, catestatin levels positively correlated with pulse wave velocity (r = 0.496, p < 0.001) and central augmentation index (r = 0.441, p < 0.001), but not with peripheral resistance. In summary, increased serum catestatin concentration in PH, predominantly in the untreated subgroup, and its association with ambulatory BP and arterial stiffness address the role of this peptide in PH.

During the E-cigarette or Vaping product use Associated Lung Injury (EVALI) outbreak of August 2019 to February 2020, the California Department of Public Health, Food and Drug Laboratory Branch received numerous cannabis vape oil cartridge investigation samples from throughout the state. Many of these products were directly linked to patients; others were collected as part of investigations. We determined the major ingredients and additives in twelve unused cannabis vape oil cartridge samples obtained before (n = 2) and during the EVALI outbreak (n = 10) in California from September 2018 to December 2019. We tested for major constituents in vape oil liquid, vape oil vapor, and vape oil aerosol phases. A nontargeted Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry direct injection screening method was developed for vape oils, a headspace heating module used for vape oil vapors and a solid-phase microextraction (SPME) vaping rig for aerosols generated by vaping. We have identified more than 100 terpenes and natural extracts, 19 cannabinoids, and other potential toxic additives such as Vitamin E Acetate, Polyethylene Glycols, and Medium Chain Triglycerides. We determined more terpenes and minor cannabinoids can be produced via vaporizing and aerosolizing the vape oil. Delta9-THC and potential toxic additives were found at lower levels in the vapor and aerosol than in the vape liquid.

Oxidative potential and anaerobic capacity could be influential to the training regimen and performance of breath-hold diving (BHD) athletes. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the differences in local muscle oxygenation between the lower limbs according to the muscle mass percentage in spearfishermen and freedivers. The sample of participants included 21 BHD athletes (13 freedivers; 8 spearfishermen; 4 females). Their chronological age was 35.5 ± 8.6 years, body mass was 79.3 ± 9.1 kg, and height was 182.5 ± 13.0 cm. Participants' training experience was 10.6 ± 9.5 years. The variables in this study included anthropometric indices, the Wingate anaerobic test, and muscle oxygen dynamics parameters. The results show significant differences for freedivers between the lower limbs (muscle mass percentage, p < 0.00; minimal SmO2%, p = 0.05; and maximal SmO2%, p = 0.04). However, when observing only spearfisherman, there is only one significant difference between the dominant and non-dominant lower limb (percentage of lower limb muscle mass, 85.73 ± 2.42, 85.16 ± 2.40%, respectively; p = 0.02). The results of this study demonstrate that freedivers have significant asymmetries between the lower limbs in muscle oxygenation parameters when observing the lower limb dominance in relation to the percentage of muscle mass. Bronze Age agriculture in Europe is marked by the adoption of new crops, such as broomcorn millet (Panicum miliaceum), broad bean (Vicia faba) and gold-of-pleasure (Camelina sativa). Yet, at a regional level, it is sometimes unclear when, where and why these crops are adopted and whether they were all adopted at the same time. Croatia is one such region where archaeobotanical research is limited, making it difficult to discuss Bronze Age agriculture and diet in more detail. The discovery of a burnt-down house with crop stores at Kalnik-Igrišče provides a unique archaeobotanical assemblage and snapshot of late Bronze Age agriculture (1000–800 BC). From the carbonised plant remains discovered at Kalnik-Igrišče we see a dominance in the crops broomcorn millet, barley (Hordeum vulgare), free-threshing wheat (Triticum aestivum/durum/turgidum) and broad bean. Emmer (Triticum dicoccum), spelt (Triticum spelta), and lentil (Lens culinaris) were also found, suggesting they were probably minor crops, while spatial analysis indicates distinct crop storage areas within the building. Overall, these finds support the adoption and integration of these new crops within northern Croatia by the late Bronze Age, while highlighting implications for seasonal strategies, risk management, and cultural dietary choice. Water polo is a team sport in which anaerobic capacity plays a significant role, but there is a lack of ecologically valid tests of water polo-specific anaerobic capacity. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to design and validate a method for evaluating the anaerobic capacity of water polo players. The sample of participants included 10 male junior water polo players (16.70 ± 1.06 years, 186.11 ± 6.06 cm, 81.18 ± 6.88 kg). Measurements included power output in the Wingate anaerobic test (WAnT) and the newly designed eggbeater kick anaerobic test (EKAT). WAnT included peak power (PP), average power (AP), minimal power (MP), and power drop (PD), and EKAT included the same four parameters as well as anaerobic capacity (AC). The results of this study show a significant correlation between test and retest values of power output (Pearson's correlation: 0.63, 0.87, 0.85, and 0.90 for PP, AP, MP, and AC, respectively). T-test calculation showed no significant differences between test and retest values for EKAT. Correlation analysis between EKAT and WAnT showed no significant correlation between corresponding power outputs. In conclusion, our results suggest that EKAT has proper metric characteristics, indicating the practical applicability of this test for male water polo players. Introduction: There are no recommended biomarkers to identify patients with refractory metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) who would benefit the most from trifluridine/tipiracil (TTP). The exploratory analysis of the RECOURSE trial revealed that patients with low tumor burden and indolent disease derive greater benefit in terms of both progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). Nevertheless, the final answer on the TTP real impact on the well-being of patients with late-stage mCRC will come from real-world data. Methods: The aim of this retrospective exploratory study was to investigate the effectiveness of TTP in mCRC with regard to the duration of standard treatment and other influencing variables. The study included 260 patients from the three largest Croatian oncology centers who began treatment with TTP in the third or fourth line between 2018 and 2020. Results: The median OS and PFS for the entire cohort were 6.53 and 2.50 months, respectively. Patients with more aggressive disease, defined as those whose time to progression on the first two lines of standard therapy was less than 18 months, had significantly shorter PFS (2.40 vs. 2.57 months, hazard ratio [HR] 1.34, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.03–1.84). There was also a tendency toward shorter OS (6.10 vs. 6.30 months, HR 1.32, 95% CI: 0.99–1.78) but without statistical significance. Patients with ECOG PS 0, without liver metastases, and with RAS mutation had both longer OS and PFS. No influence was detected from other variables including age, sex, primary tumor location, and tumor burden. Conclusion: With regard to the results of the previously conducted trials, the study concludes that indolent disease, good general condition, and absence of liver metastases are positive predictive factors for TTP treatment. Existing research on the education of refugee children has been conducted in countries with a longstanding tradition of refugee integration. The aim of this study was to gain insight into the integration process of refugee children in Croatian schools. Croatia is a small EU country with limited experience in refugee integration. The phenomenological approach was used to examine the experiences and perspectives of the relevant actors. Interviews and focus group discussions were conducted with refugee children (N = 15), their parents (N = 5), classmates (N = 50), and school staff (N = 54) from six elementary schools in Zagreb. Data analyses suggested three general needs: educational, language, and social, each of them connected to more specific needs, challenges, and suggestions. The results of the study are discussed within the Schachner et al. (2017) framework of immigrant adolescents' acculturation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A series of polynuclear, dinuclear, and mononuclear Mo(VI) complexes were synthesized with the hydrazonato ligands derived from 5-methoxysalicylaldehyde and the corresponding hydrazides (isonicotinic hydrazide (H2L1), nicotinic hydrazide (H2L2), 2-aminobenzhydrazide (H2L3), or 4-aminobenzhydrazide (H2L4)). The metallosupramolecular compounds obtained from non-coordinating solvents, [MoO2(L1,2)]n (1 and 2) and [MoO2(L3,4)]2 (3 and 4), formed infinite structures and metallacycles, respectively. By blocking two coordination sites with cis-dioxo ligands, the molybdenum centers have three coordination sites occupied by the ONO donor atoms from the rigid hydrazone ligands and one by the N atom of pyridyl or amine-functionalized ligand subcomponents from the neighboring Mo building units. The reaction in methanol afforded the mononuclear analogs [MoO2(L1-4)(MeOH)] (1a–4a) with additional monodentate MeOH ligands. All isolated complexes were tested as catalysts for cyclooctene epoxidation using tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) as an oxidant in water. The impact of the structure and ligand lability on the catalytic efficiency in homogeneous cyclooctene epoxidation was elucidated based on theoretical considerations. With the increasing prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) in the general population, the number of parents of children with ASD is also on the rise. Parents face numerous challenges in providing care for their children while trying to meet their needs. The aim of this study was to gain insight into the perspective of parents of children with autism regarding the challenges they encounter. Qualitative research was conducted with a sample of 8 participants. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. Research results show that parents encounter difficulties related to the child’s undesirable behaviors: in adjusting to new parenting demands, coping with parental stress, advocating for the child’s rights, dealing with the inadequacies of the educational system, and adapting to changes in family life dynamics. Parents receive support from professionals and informal support from close individuals, but they also emphasize the lack of support. Participants’ recommendations for improvement in parenting children with autism spectrum disorders focus on parental engagement, enhancement of rights and social services, timely intervention, as well as interventions in the educational system. Analysis of the results and literature indicates that the challenges of parenting children with ASD are specific compared to other children with developmental disabilities, and certainly parenting in general. We consider conductivity optimal design problems for two isotropic phases with prescribed amounts, optimizing the energy functional. We analyze optimality conditions obtained by shape calculus, in the spherically symmetric case for simple radial designs, such that the interface between two given isotropic phases consists of a single sphere. Every such design satisfies the first-order optimality condition. By using classical Fourier analysis techniques we are able to express and analyze the second-order optimality conditions. This implies that for any outer heat source, considered simple designs cannot give local minima of the energy functional. Two examples are presented, showing that the presented approach gives a complete answer whether a considered critical design is a saddle point, or the Lagrangian satisfies the negative coercivity condition in H 1/2 norm of normal perturbation on the interface. This study presents the preliminary results of a smallscale masonry wall thermal resistance (R-value) measurement. Two small-scale masonry walls were constructed using regular and antimony tin oxide (ATO)- containing bricks. ATO has shown potential for improving the protection against electromagnetic radiation penetration. R-values of the walls were measured using a FluxDAQ device equipped with a heat flux sensor and two temperature sensors for obtaining the heat flux and inside and outside temperatures during the measurement. Furthermore, the thermal conductivity (λ) of the bricks was measured by using the Fox200 Heat Flow Meter. Both results can be used for determining a walls' thermal transmittance (U-value), which is often used for describing the energy losses and as a measure of a wall's energy efficiency. This research sought to investigate whether there is a correlation between the results obtained by the small-scale masonry wall and Fox200 device. Ultimately, this experiment aims to verify whether the small-scale masonry wall non-standard method described herein can provide approximately similar results to the standardised method. The tendency to get involved in helping one’s family, friends, school, and community has many potential benefits such as greater compassion, concern for others, and social responsibility. Research interest in the benefits of contribution in adolescents has increased recently, but there are not many studies examining the effect of contribution on adolescents’ mental health. The present study focused on whether the contribution is associated with fewer self-rated depression symptoms in adolescents. We further tested whether self-regulation and academic performance can have a mediating role in this association. A total of 423 secondary school students (233 female) from eastern Croatia participated in the study. Mean age was 16.78 (SD = 1.21). Students completed measures of self-regulation, depression symptoms, and contribution (helping one’s family, friends, or neighbors, mentoring peers, volunteering in one’s community, and participating in school organizations or boards), and gave information about age, gender, and academic performance. A hierarchical regression analysis revealed that contribution, self-regulation, and academic performance were related with lower levels of self-rated depression symptoms. Furthermore, mediation analysis indicated a significant indirect effect through two mediators, self-regulation and academic performance, which was stronger than a path containing only self-regulation. Academic performance alone was not a significant mediator. Our findings suggest that contribution could protect against depression by promoting self-regulation, leading to higher academic performance, and consequently fewer depression symptoms.
