111. Evaluation of near-singular integrals with application to vortex sheet flow

Abstract

This paper presents a method to evaluate the near-singular line integrals that solve elliptic boundary value problems in planar and axisymmetric geometries. The integrals are near-singular for target points not on, but near the boundary, and standard quadratures lose accuracy as the distance d to the boundary decreases. The method is based on Taylor series approximations of the integrands that capture the near-singular behaviour and can be integrated in closed form. It amounts to applying the trapezoid rule with meshsize h, and adding a correction for each of the basis functions in the Taylor series. The corrections are computed at a cost of $$O(n_w)$$ per target point, where typically, $$n_w$$ =10–40. Any desired order of accuracy can be achieved using the appropriate number of terms in the Taylor series expansions. Two explicit versions of order $$O(h^2)$$ and $$O(h^3)$$ are listed, with errors that decrease as $$d\rightarrow 0$$ . The method is applied to compute planar potential flow past a plate and past two cylinders, as well as long-time vortex sheet separation in flow past an inclined plate. These flows illustrate the significant difficulties introduced by inaccurate evaluation of the near-singular integrals and their resolution by the proposed method. The corrected results converge at the analytically predicted rates.

Abstract

This work is devoted to the construction of weakly nonlinear, highly oscillating, current vortex sheet solutions to the system of ideal incompressible magnetohydrodynamics. Current vortex sheets are piecewise smooth solutions that satisfy suitable jump conditions on the (free) discontinuity surface. In this article, we complete an earlier work by Alì and Hunter (Quart. Appl. Math. 61(3) (2003) 451–474) and construct approximate solutions at any arbitrarily large order of accuracy to the three-dimensional free boundary problem when the initial discontinuity displays high frequency oscillations. As evidenced in earlier works, high frequency oscillations of the current vortex sheet give rise to ‘surface waves’ on either side of the sheet. Such waves decay exponentially in the normal direction to the current vortex sheet and, in the weakly nonlinear regime which we consider here, their leading amplitude is governed by a nonlocal Hamilton–Jacobi type equation known as the ‘HIZ equation’ (standing for Hamilton–Il’insky–Zabolotskaya (J. Acoust. Soc. Amer. 97(2) (1995) 891–897)) in the context of Rayleigh waves in elastodynamics. The main achievement of our work is to develop a systematic approach for constructing arbitrarily many correctors to the leading amplitude. We exhibit necessary and sufficient solvability conditions for the corrector equations that need to be solved iteratively. The verification of these solvability conditions is based on mere algebra and arguments of combinatorial analysis, namely a Leibniz type formula which we have not been able to find in the literature. The construction of arbitrarily many correctors enables us to produce infinitely accurate approximate solutions to the current vortex sheet equations. Eventually, we show that the rectification phenomenon exhibited by Marcou in the context of Rayleigh waves (C. R. Math. Acad. Sci. Paris 349(23–24) (2011) 1239–1244) does not arise in the same way for the current vortex sheet problem.

Abstract

In an incompressible inviscid flow system, helical symmetry means invariance though combined axial translation and rotation about the same axis. In helical symmetry, the axial vorticity is materially conserved if the velocity components along the helical lines are proportional to 1/(1+epsilon^2r^2), where e is the pitch and r is the distance from the z-axis. Linear instability analysis shows that a circular helical vortex patch centered at the origin is neutrally stable. We present the evolution of a family of helically symmetric vortices using contour dynamics, a Lagrangian technique to compute the motion of vortices via contour integrals. For contours perturbed by both lower and high modes, the first mode always becomes the most unstable mode for large time. We can inspect the features induced by the lower perturbed mode. We take mode 4 and mode 9 as examples in this work. Adding a vortex sheet on the boundary of the shifted contour accelerates the twisting and rotating process. The distribution of vortex sheet forms a sharpening shock in the evolution and may lead to the discontinuity.

Abstract

In this paper, we study long-time evolutions of the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability with surface tension and density jump by using the vortex sheet model. Applying a spectrally accurate numerical method, we investigate effects of surface tension and density jump on the instability in various regimes of parameters. The numerical results show that by varying the density ratio, the large-scale feature of the roll-up of the interface is basically similar, but the structure of the inner roll-up is significantly different. At high Weber numbers, the interface collides with itself at the finger tip for low Atwood numbers, but for high Atwood numbers, the finger is pinched off. The dispersive waves and corrugations on the interface are more prominent for low Atwood numbers. For a very high Weber number, the finger of the interface becomes small, while for a low Weber number, the interface has a structure of long filament. Abstract

This paper describes free acoustic oscillations of gas in a chamber with a jet flowing through its nozzle in the case of nonstationary intensity component of vortex sheet flowing down from the edge of the nozzle. There is established feedback between acoustic oscillations and oscillations induced by a corresponding vortex sheet component. It is shown that, in the presence of given feedback, there could be instability of acoustic oscillations, which would result in acoustic self-oscillations in the chamber. The boundaries of the domain in which instability is formed are determined by developing a mathematical model of stable acoustic oscillations in the chamber with account for the influence of the vortex sheet. Abstract

A well-posedness theory for the initial-value problem for hydroelastic waves in two spatial dimensions is presented. This problem, which arises in numerous applications, describes the evolution of a thin elastic membrane in a two-dimensional (2D) potential flow. We use a model for the elastic sheet that accounts for bending stresses and membrane tension, but which neglects the mass of the membrane. The analysis is based on a vortex sheet formulation and, following earlier analyses and numerical computations in 2D interfacial flow with surface tension, we use an angle-arclength representation of the problem. We prove short-time well-posedness in Sobolev spaces. The proof is based on energy estimates, and the main challenge is to find a definition of the energy and estimates on high-order non-local terms so that an a priori bound can be obtained. Abstract

At a finite temperature, the stable equilibrium states of a coupled two-component superfluid with the same mass in both non-rotating and rotating cases can be obtained by studying its real time dynamics via holography, the equilibrium state is the final stable state that does not change in time anymore in the evolution process . Without rotation, the spatial phase separated states of the two components become more stable than the miscible condensates state when the direct repulsive inter-component coupling constant $\eta>\eta_c=0.05$ when the Josephson coupling $\epsilon$ is turned off. While a finite $\epsilon$ will always prevent the two species to be separated spatially. Under rotation, with vanishing $\epsilon$, the quantum fluid reveals many equilibrium structures of vortex states by varying the $\eta$ from negative to positive, the interlaced vortex lattices undergo a phase transition to vortex sheets with each component made up of chains of single quantized vortices., Comment: 7pages,6 figures.
