Purpose – With the opening up of the economy since the 1959 Economic Stabilization Plan, was it the production of electricity that drove the growth of gross domestic product (GDP) in Spain or, on the contrary, was it the growth of GDP that drove the production of electricity well into the 21st century? The purpose of this paper is to answer this question. Design/methodology/approach – A cointegration approach based on the studies conducted by Pesaran and Shin (1999) and Pesaran et al. (2001) is applied, as it is suitable for short data series like those used in this paper. Findings – The results of this paper allow us to conclude that electricity production boosted economic growth in Spain during the period under study, confirming the growth hypothesis. Research limitations/implications – The results of this paper should be interpreted with caution, as electricity today amounts to less than a quarter of the total amount of energy used in Spain. It was not possible to incorporate other inputs to the production function (such as other energy inputs, technological or human capital), but the methodology used avoids the problems of omitted variables and of autocorrelation. Practical implications – The results show that a small economy with limited resources, such as the Spanish one, is more vulnerable to energy shocks than other energy-sufficient economies. As Spain is a country with high energy dependence from abroad, the government must first ensure the electricity supply. Increased availability and access to different sources of electricity will improve the outlook for the Spanish economy. Conversely, a shortage in supply of electricity will constrain the regular pace of economic growth. Social implications – Spain should investigate and explore more efficient and cost-effective sources of energy, in particular the renewable energies, as traditional energy sources will be scarce before long. Originality/value – This paper differs from previous ones carried out for Spain in several aspects: it considers a broader period of time, from 1958 to 2015; the relationships between electricity production and GDP are analysed for the first time in a neo-classical production function where electricity, capital and employment are considered as separate factors; and a cointegration approach based on the studies conducted by Pesaran and Shin (1999) and Pesaran et al. (2001) is applied, as it is suitable for short data series like those used in this paper.

IntroductionMeteorin-like (METRNL) is a hormonal factor released by several tissues, including thermogenically active brown and beige adipose tissues. It exerts multiple beneficial effects on metabolic and cardiovascular systems in experimental models. However, the potential role of METRNL as brown adipokine in humans has not been investigated previously, particularly in relation to the metabolic adaptations taking place in early life, when brown adipose tissue (BAT) is particularly abundant.Methods and materialsMETRNL levels, as well as body composition (DXA) and circulating endocrine-metabolic variables, were assessed longitudinally in a cohort of infants at birth, and at ages 4 and 12 months. BAT activity was measured by infrared thermography at age 12 months. METRNL levels were also determined cross-sectionally in adults; METRNL gene expression (qRT-PCR) was assessed in BAT and liver samples from neonates, and in adipose tissue and liver samples form adults. Simpson-Golabi-Behmel Syndrome (SGBS) adipose cells were thermogenically activated using cAMP, and METRNL gene expression and METRNL protein released were analysed.ResultsSerum METRNL levels were high at birth and declined across the first year of life albeit remaining higher than in adulthood. At age 4 and 12 months, METRNL levels correlated positively with circulating C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 14 (CXCL14), a chemokine released by thermogenically active BAT, but not with parameters of adiposity or metabolic status. METRNL levels also correlated positively with infrared thermography-estimated posterior-cervical BAT activity in girls aged 12 months. Gene expression analysis indicated high levels of METRNL mRNA in neonatal BAT. Thermogenic stimulus of brown/beige adipocytes led to a significant increase of METRNL gene expression and METRN protein release to the cell culture medium.ConclusionCirculating METRNL levels are high in the first year of life and correlate with indices of BAT activity and with levels of an established brown adipokine such as CXCL14. These data, in addition with the high expression of METRNL in neonatal BAT and in thermogenically-stimulated brown/beige adipocytes, suggest that METRNL is actively secreted by BAT and may be a circulating biomarker of BAT activity in early life.

Abstract A prime concern of young patients with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is the control of body adiposity, given their tendency to gain weight and/or their difficulty to lose weight. Circulating growth-and-differentiation factor-15 (GDF15) facilitates the control of body weight via receptors in the brainstem. C-reactive protein (CRP) and insulin are endogenous GDF15 secretagogues. We hypothesised that PCOS in non-obese adolescents is characterised by low concentrations of circulating GDF15, when judged by the degree of CRP and insulin drive. GDF15 was added as a post-hoc endpoint of two previously reported, randomised studies in non-obese adolescent girls with PCOS (N = 58; 60% normal weight; 40% overweight) who received either an oral oestroprogestogen contraceptive (OC), or a low-dose combination of spironolactone-pioglitazone-metformin (SPIOMET) for 1 year; subsequently, all girls remained untreated for 1 year. Adolescent girls with regular menses (N = 20) served as healthy controls. Circulating GDF15, CRP and fasting insulin were assessed prior to treatment, and halfway the on- and post-treatment years. Pre-treatment, the absolute GDF15 concentrations were normal in PCOS girls, but their relative levels were markedly low, in view of the augmented CRP and insulin drives. OC treatment was accompanied by a near-doubling of circulating GDF15 (on average, from 296 to 507 pg/mL) and CRP, so that the relative GDF15 levels remained low. SPIOMET treatment was accompanied by a 3.4-fold rise of circulating GDF15 (on average, from 308 to 1045 pg/mL) and by a concomitant lowering of CRP and insulin concentrations towards normal, so that the relative GDF15 levels became markedly abundant. Post-OC, the relatively low GDF15 levels persisted; post-SPIOMET, the circulating concentrations of GDF15, CRP and insulin were all normal. BMI remained stable in both treatment groups. Only SPIOMET was accompanied by a reduction of hepato-visceral fat (by MRI) towards normal. In conclusion, early PCOS was found to be characterised by a relative GDF15 deficit that may partly explain the difficulties that young patients experience to control their body adiposity. This relative GDF15 deficit persisted during and after OC treatment. In contrast, SPIOMET treatment was accompanied by an absolute and a relative abundance of GDF15, and followed by normal GDF15, CRP and insulin concentrations. The present findings strengthen the rationale to raise the concentrations of circulating GDF15 in early PCOS, for example with a SPIOMET-like intervention that attenuates low-grade inflammation, insulin resistance and ectopic adiposity, without necessarily lowering body weight. Objectives: To study the reversibility of cold-induced cardiac hypertrophy and the role of autophagy in this process.Background: Chronic exposure to cold is known to cause cardiac hypertrophy independent of blood pressure elevation. The reversibility of this process and the molecular mechanisms involved are unknown.Methods: Studies were performed in two-month-old mice exposed to cold (4°C) for 24 h or 10 days. After exposure, the animals were returned to room temperature (21°C) for 24 h or 1 week.Results: We found that chronic cold exposure significantly increased the heart weight/tibia length (HW/TL) ratio, the mean area of cardiomyocytes, and the expression of hypertrophy markers, but significantly decreased the expression of genes involved in fatty acid oxidation. Echocardiographic measurements confirmed hypertrophy development after chronic cold exposure. One week of deacclimation for cold-exposed mice fully reverted the morphological, functional, and gene expression indicators of cardiac hypertrophy. Experiments involving injection of leupeptin at 1 h before sacrifice (to block autophagic flux) indicated that cardiac autophagy was repressed under cold exposure and re-activated during the first 24 h after mice were returned to room temperature. Pharmacological blockage of autophagy for 1 week using chloroquine in mice subjected to deacclimation from cold significantly inhibited the reversion of cardiac hypertrophy.Conclusion: Our data indicate that mice exposed to cold develop a marked cardiac hypertrophy that is reversed after 1 week of deacclimation. We propose that autophagy is a major mechanism underlying the heart remodeling seen in response to cold exposure and its posterior reversion after deacclimation.

Aims: First, to gain insights into the perceptions and evaluations of the university community (faculty and students) of the incorporation and presence of the gender and LGBTI+ perspective in the teaching of undergraduate studies at the Faculty of Information and Audiovisual Media at the University of Barcelona; second, to promote the incorporation of the gender perspective in the subjects on the degrees through the design and development of teaching instruments and materials together with the teaching staff. Methods: This participatory action research was designed to promote critical reflection and social transformation inside the classroom. The data were collected from eight focus groups with students and teachers, participant observation, and a participatory workshop for the creation of teaching materials with teachers. Results: There is widespread support for the incorporation of the gender perspective, although significant barriers to its implementation remain. Among the teaching staff, these barriers are mainly related to the lack of training or institutional recognition. For their part, students value and appreciate the incorporation of the gender perspective but continue to observe major limitations and call for a more determined, more cross-sectional introduction.

ObjectiveBone morphogenetic protein-8B (BMP8B) is an adipokine produced by brown adipose tissue (BAT) contributing to thermoregulation and metabolic homeostasis in rodent models. In humans, BAT activity is particularly relevant in newborns and young infants. We assessed BMP8B levels and their relationship with BAT activity and endocrine-metabolic parameters in young infants to ascertain its potentiality as biomarker in early life.Materials and MethodsBMP8B concentrations were assessed longitudinally by ELISA in a cohort of 27 girls and 23 boys at birth, and at age 4 and 12 months, together with adiposity parameters (DXA), and circulating endocrine-metabolic variables. BAT activity was measured by infrared thermography. BMP8B gene expression (qRT-PCR) was determined in BAT, white fat, and liver samples from neonatal necropsies, and in placenta and cord blood.ResultsBMP8B levels were high at birth, particularly in boys (P = 0.04 vs. girls), declined progressively, and remained well above those in healthy adults and pregnant women at age 1 year (P < 0.05 and P < 0.001, respectively). Neonatal BMP8B transcript levels were higher in BAT than in white fat, liver and cord blood. Circulating BMP8B levels during the first year of life marginally correlated with bone mineral density and gains in lean mass.ConclusionBMP8B levels are high at birth and decline progressively over the first year of life remaining above adult levels. Although changes in BMP8B concentrations overall reflect those in BAT activity during development, BMP8B levels are unlikely to be useful to predict individual variations in endocrine-metabolic status and BAT activity in healthy young infants.

Brown adipose tissue (BAT) in infants has been studied for more than a century, however, the knowledge about its physiological features is limited. Here, the authors investigate the link between BAT thermogenesis and the regulation of temperature in human new-borns with non-invasive infrared thermography.

Currently, research is focused on bioactive compounds with the potential to promote macrophage polarization with the aim of reducing the development of inflammatory-related diseases. However, the effect of bioactive compounds under oxidative-stress-induced hyperglycemia on macrophage polarization has been scarcely investigated. RAW 264.7 macrophages were incubated under standard (SG) or high glucose (HG) conditions and stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) (10, 60 and 100 ng/mL) to monitor macrophage polarization after resveratrol (RSV) or 3H-1,2-dithiole-3-thione (D3T) supplementation (2.5, 5, 10 and 20 µM). Under SG and HG conditions without LPS stimulation, RSV significantly decreased macrophage viability at the highest concentration (20 µM), whereas D3T had no or low effect. LPS stimulation at 60 and 100 ng/mL, under SG and HG conditions, increased significantly macrophage viability. Both RSV and D3T significantly decreased NO production in LPS-stimulated macrophages under HG condition, whereas only D3T increased GSH levels at 100 ng/mL and normalized MDA values at 60 ng/mL of LPS under HG condition. Under 60 ng/mL LPS stimulation and HG, mRNA IL-1 and IL-6 were higher. Interestingly, RSV decreased pro-inflammatory interleukins; meanwhile, D3T increased Arg1 and IL-10 relative expression. Overall, our results indicate that hyperglycemia plays a fundamental role in the modulation of macrophage-induced inflammation in response to bioactive compounds.

Simple Summary: People are increasingly concerned about the treatment and wellbeing of animals in zoos and aquariums, which has led to a big shift in how these places are seen by the public. For zoos and aquariums to keep up with these changing views, they need to understand how society thinks about them. Over the past 30 years, many studies have looked at how people feel about zoos and aquariums. This review seeks to compile recent research that offers insight into how contemporary societies view these establishments. One finding is that a higher number of female researchers have been involved in studies on zoos and aquariums compared to other areas of science, and previous studies have reported that women tended to be more empathetic towards animals and animal welfare than men. Most of the research has been conducted in Western countries, which creates a gap in our understanding from a global point of view. The studies also did not focus much on aquariums or children, and there is a need for more research that assesses changes in visitors' perceptions of animal wellbeing and the role that zoos and aquariums play in species conservation that compares attitudes before and after their visit. These insights highlight important areas for future research that could help shape how zoos and aquariums evolve and improve. Zoos and aquariums attract millions of visitors around the world. At the same time, the functions they fulfill and the way they do that have been subject to scrutiny from different fields of knowledge. The way societies perceive animals has evolved in recent decades and so has the social perception of institutions that work with them. This scoping review aims to gather studies from the last three decades that shade light on how current societies perceive zoos and aquariums. We selected papers describing quantitative studies published in English in peer-reviewed journals. We reviewed 71 works from different fields of knowledge. The proportion of female authors was noticeably higher than in general science. Most studies were carried out in culturally Western countries, a fact that constitutes a gap in knowledge from a global perspective. We also noticed an underrepresentation of aquariums and of children in the analyzed papers, and a need for more pre–post studies to ascertain the effect of a zoo or aquarium on its visitors. These conclusions point out interesting directions for future studies to help scientists, managers, and citizens design the future of these institutions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article examines and critically analyses the contributions of a diverse group of cultural actors who participated in focus group sessions organised as part of the public consultation held between 2022 and 2023 by the Catalan government for the development of a future Cultural Rights Law in Catalonia. This study problematises the four key dimensions that were discussed in the focus group sessions. First, it analyses access to culture, highlighting the barriers and facilitators. Second, it explores cultural participation, addressing the complexities of promoting active audiences, individual and collective creation and participation in cultural governance. Third, it investigates the intersectionality of gender in cultural practices, underscoring the challenges faced by women and gender minorities. Finally, it discusses the professionalisation of culture, pointing out the precarious working conditions in the sector. The article provides evidence of the integration of cultural rights into policies, reflecting on the socio-political contexts that shape them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This case report focuses on a rare presentation of Epstein-Barr virus as genital ulcers in a 14-year-old girl with no sexual activity history. Despite initial misdiagnosis and failed acyclovir treatment, investigations ruled out sexually transmitted causes but revealed elevated Epstein-Barr virus antibodies. Subsequent treatment with a 14-day prednisone course led to significant improvement. This case emphasizes the importance of considering nonsexual etiologies for genital ulcers to prevent delayed or inappropriate treatment and highlights the need for broader education on such atypical presentations. Background: Lengthening of the extensor hallucis longus (EHL) is performed to address various forefoot pathologies. The retraction of this tendon is strongly associated with the Hallux Abductus Valgus (HAV) deformity. Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) lengthening of the EHL is carried out in combination with other surgical techniques for HAV bone realignment. It is performed without ischemia, using local anesthesia and sedation if required by the patient. One of the advantages of this technique is immediate ambulation with a postoperative shoe without the need for a cast. The objective of the research was to demonstrate the efficacy and safety of the minimally invasive technique for lengthening the tendon in patients with HAV. Materials and methods: The procedures were performed on 11 fresh cryopreserved cadaveric feet. HAV surgery was performed through dorsomedial and dorsolateral portals for Reverdin-Isham, Akin and adductor tenotomy. In addition, EHL tendon elongation was performed using the Beaver 67 MIS scalpel through an incomplete zigzag tenotomy. The specimens used did not present any type of disease nor had they undergone previous surgeries that could affect the technique. First, the plantar flexion of the metatarsophalangeal joint was measured with a goniometer to establish the degrees of this joint before proceeding with the technique, the tenotomy was performed and remeasured and finally the osteotomy was performed. In addition, an anatomical dissection of cadaveric specimens was performed and various anatomical and surgical relationships were analyzed and measured. Results: The data indicate that, after performing zigzag tenotomy, there is an average improvement of 13.91 degrees in plantar flexion. Conclusions: The study confirms the effectiveness and safety of elongating the extensor hallucis longus tendon of the hallux using minimally invasive surgery. The zigzag technique for tendon elongation may be considered a viable minimally invasive treatment option for addressing tendon hyperextension in patients with HAV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
