Abstract

The review paper comprised the impact of geographical and environmental factors on polyploidy and vice versa. The review covers different effects of geographical factors, like spatial isolation, altitude, and local climate on polyploidy, and the behavior of polyploid(s) in abiotic factors, such as temperature and light with a few examples of northwest Himalayas. The paper concludes that polyploid plants behave differently in environmental conditions, as polyploids are more prominent in higher altitudes, colder environments, and nutrient-rich soil than diploid progenitors, but have a mixed distribution in different geographical conditions. Further, polyploidy is more common among perennials than annuals, while niche differentiation depends more on the local environment. The virtual case study results from North and North Western India have been shown with the help of ArcGIS online software. The scrutiny of spatial distribution on maps highlights the fact that polyploidy is still a complex research puzzle with interesting perspectives.

Abstract

Context: Nowadays, dentists use tooth-colored materials extensively, but the bond strength of these materials with teeth is crucial to determine their long-span durability. As a result, the bond strength of these materials must be assessed. Aims: This study aimed to compare the push-out bond strength of alkasite restorative material and bulk-fill composite when used with a universal adhesive system. Settings and Design: In vitro study to determine the push-out bond strength with a universal testing machine. Subjects and Methods: Forty extracted mandibular molars were taken and their occlusal surface was wet grounded with silicon carbide paper so that a smooth dentin surface was obtained. Class I cavities were prepared with a template to standardize the size of the preparation. Teeth were divided into Group I and Group II of 20 teeth each. Alkasite restorative material was used in Group I, and nanohybrid bulk-fill composite was used in Group II. Restored samples were sliced into 2 mm thick sections and examined for push-out bond strength. Results: Push-out bond strength of Cention-N was 201.25 and the composite was 163.69, and the results were statistically significant (P = 0.017). Statistical Analysis Used: Unpaired t-test. Conclusions: It was concluded that alkasite material had more push-out bond strength than bulk-fill composite when used with a universal adhesive system.

Abstract

Spine gourd (SG) is a nutritionally and medicinally rich seasonal vegetable grown in tropical areas. Therefore, the present study accessed the effect of drying temperature (40, 50, 60, and 70 °C) on chlorophyll, ascorbic acid, proximate, antioxidant, and minerals contents of ultrasound (US) pretreated SG. The increase in drying temperature (40−70 °C) after pretreatment increased the total flavonoids, fiber, protein and ash content compared to freeze-dried (control) sample. In contrast, elevated drying temperature significantly degraded the chlorophyll, ascorbic acid, carbohydrates, fat, total phenolic, and DPPH activity. In addition, the effect of drying temperature on the mineral contents was comparable and a significant variation was observed between control and US pretreated samples. The FTIR spectra revealed that functional group integrity was preserved even at higher drying temperatures. Conclusively, the US pretreated sample dried at 40 °C showed a better nutritional content (comparable to freeze-dried samples) than those dried at higher temperatures. However, samples dried at 70 °C were rich in protein and antioxidants.

Study Design A prospective comparative study. Purpose To compare the incidence of unintended durotomy and return to work after open surgery versus minimally invasive spine surgery (MIS) for degenerative lumbar pathologies. Overview of Literature The incidence of accidental durotomy varies between 0.3% and 35%. Most of these are from open surgeries, and only a handful of studies have involved the MIS approach. No single-center studies have compared open surgery with MIS, especially in the context of early return to work and dural tear (DT). Methods This study included 420 operated cases of degenerative lumbar pathology with a prospective follow-up of at least 6 months. Abstract

Acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase: EC 6.4.1.2) is one of the essential biotins containing enzymes required by plants for fatty acid synthesis and elongation. The unique enzyme is present in its homomeric form in all the Gramineae family, making it a suitable target for developing herbicides selectively against weeds of the Gramineae family. One such example is infestation of Phalaris minor in winter wheat crop fields, where aryloxyphenoxypropionates (FOP); cyclohexanediones (DIM) and phenyl pyrazoline (DEN) group of ACCase inhibiting herbicides are used. However, the increasing number of ACCase herbicide resistant weed populations has compelled agro-scientists to seek varied possibilities for weed control, through Integrated Weed Management (IWM) strategies. Developing new potential herbicides to regain sensitivity in weeds could be an approach to weed control. The current advancement in computational techniques could be of aid in developing new herbicide-like molecules by exploring the genomics, proteomics and structural details of catalytic sites of herbicide action in crops as well as weeds.

Abstract

Whole and fresh-cut produce are minimally processed and susceptible to microbial contamination. This study evaluated the survival or growth of L. monocytogenes on peeled rinds, and fresh-cut produce at different storage temperatures. Fresh-cut fruits and vegetables, including cantaloupe, watermelon, pear, papaya, pineapple, broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, bell pepper, and kale (25 g pieces) were spot inoculated with 4 log CFU/g of L. monocytogenes and stored at 4 or 13°C for 6 days. Cantaloupe and bell pepper rind disks (20 cm2), mimicking whole produce were inoculated with low inoculum level (4 log CFU/mL) and high inoculum level (6 log CFU/mL) and stored at 24°C up to 8 days and 4°C up to 14 days, respectively. L. monocytogenes counts on fresh-cut pear samples stored at 4°C increased significantly by 0.27 log CFU/g. However, Listeria levels on kale (day 4), cauliflower (day 6), and broccoli (day 2) were significantly reduced by 0.73, 1.18, and 0.80 log CFU/g, respectively, at 4°C. At 13°C, the bacterial counts increased significantly after a day of storage on fresh-cut watermelons (increasing by 1.10 log CFU/g) and cantaloupes (increasing by 1.52 log CFU/g). Similar increases were observed on pears (1.00 log CFU/g), papayas (1.65 log CFU/g), and green bell peppers (1.72 log CFU/g). Pineapple samples did not support the growth of L. monocytogenes at 13°C with a significant reduction of 1.80 log CFU/g by day 6. L. monocytogenes levels significantly increased in fresh-cut lettuce at 13°C but remained stable on kale, cauliflower, and broccoli after 6 days of storage. Stable population was observed also on cantaloupe rinds up to 8 days at 24°C. While on the outer surface of bell peppers, the population level decreased below the detectable limit of the test (10 CFU/20 cm2) after 14 days of storage at 4°C. The results demonstrated variable survival behavior of L. monocytogenes on fresh-cut produce with produce type and storage temperature.

Abstract

As an emerging economy, India’s post-pandemic resilience supports this study. We scrutinize current MD&A (Management Discussion and Analysis) reporting practices by Indian firms, aligning with the 'Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure Development' goal of Sustainability. Data was extracted from annual reports of selected listed Indian companies for the years 2016-2021. The data was analyzed using content analysis and t-tests. We found an encouraging increase in the quantity and quality of disclosures over time, even during the pandemic. However, there is a significant discrepancy with quality lagging behind quantity. These findings highlight an urgent need for improved MD&A disclosures. Managers, regulators, and organizations could use this study to identify issues and strategically direct their efforts for maximum benefits in this domain. This pioneering study assesses adherence to MD&A practices within the Indian context, extending its contribution to the accounting literature of other developing Asian economies, such as Indonesia, Malaysia, and China, where MD&A practices are still evolving.
