Abstract

[EN] Fault diagnosis is important for industrial processes because it permits to determine the necessity of emergency stops in a process and/or to propose a maintenance plan. Two strategies for fault diagnosis are compared in this work. On the one hand, the data are preprocessed using the independent components analysis for dimension reduction, then the wavelet transform is used in order to highlight the faulty signals, with this information an artificial neural network was fed. On the other hand, the second strategy, the main contribution of this work, is the implementation of a long short term memory. This memory is fed with the most representative variables selected by an elastic net to use both, the L1 and L2 norms. These strategies are applied in the Tennessee Eastman process, a benchmark widely used for fault diagnosis. The fault isolation had better results than those reported in the literature., [ES] El diagnóstico de fallas es importante en los procesos industriales, ya que permite determinar si es necesario detener el proceso en operación y/o proponer un plan de mantenimiento. En el presente trabajo se comparan dos estrategias para diagnosticar fallas. La primera realiza un preprocesamiento de datos usando el análisis de componentes independientes para reducir la dimensión de los datos, posteriormente, se emplea la transformada wavelet para resaltar las señales de falla, con esta información se alimenta una red neuronal artificial. Por su parte, la segunda estrategia, principal contribución de este trabajo, usa una memoria de corto y largo plazo. Esta memoria es alimentada por las variables más significativas seleccionadas mediante una red elástica para usar tanto la norma $L_1$ como la $L_2$. Como ejemplo de aplicación se utilizó el proceso químico Tennessee Eastman, un proceso ampliamente usado en el diagnóstico de fallas. El aislamiento de fallas mostró mejores resultados con respecto a los reportados en la literatura.

Abstract

To reap its full benefits, 5G must evolve into a scalable decentralized architecture by exploiting intelligence ubiquitously and securely across different technologies, network layers, and segments. In this article, we propose end-to-end and ubiquitous secure machine learning (ML)-powered intent-based networking (IBN). The IBN framework is aware of its state and context to autonomously take proactive actions for service assurance. It is integrated in a zero-touch control and orchestration framework featuring an ML function orchestrator to manage ML pipelines. The objective is to create an elastic and dynamic infrastructure supporting per-domain and end-to-end network and services operation. The solution is supported by a radio access network and forwarding plane, and a cloud/edge virtualization infrastructure with ML acceleration. The resulting framework supports application-level resilience and intelligence through replication and elasticity. An illustrative intelligent application use case is presented.

Abstract

Near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) has not been tested sufficiently for its capacity to estimate erucic acid in Brassica species. Our objective was to evaluate the potential of NIRS for screening whole-seed samples of Ethiopian mustard (Brassica carinata A. Braun) for erucic acid concentration. A total of 1440 samples previously analyzed by gas-liquid chromatography (GLC) were scanned by NIRS. Samples for calibration and validation were selected according to their erucic acid concentration. A calibration equation was developed and its validation gave a coefficient of multiple determination ([r.sup.2]) of 0.96. A comparison between GLC values and NIRS estimation was performed with the remaining samples not included in the calibration and validation sets. We found that 90% of samples were classified by NIRS in the same or an adjacent class as those determined by GLC. It demonstrates that screening for erucic acid in this species can be performed with high reliability by means of NIRS.

Abstract

The performance of porous carbon materials as sorbents is often compromised by the presence of humidity. Studying the kinetics of water vapour adsorption on activated carbons will undeniably help to overcome this issue. This has been approached in this work by evaluating the influence of several operational factors on the dynamic adsorption of water vapour in these materials. Specifically, different carbon types, particle sizes, air flows and ambient conditions (temperature and relative humidity (RH)) were systematically investigated. The impact of each isolated parameter on both the maximum water uptake and the uptake rate was analyzed by fitting the experimental data to the Linear Driving Force (LDF) kinetic model. The results show that except for the particle size, the studied variables play a role in the water sorption kinetics, although to a different extent. It was also confirmed that the LDF model can adequately describe the kinetics of water vapour adsorption independently of the experimental conditions. Finally, the complete water vapour adsorption process can be described by this model, obtaining a different value of the kinetic constant for the sequential stages, involving different adsorption mechanisms. Abstract

Ni50Ti50 nm-sized amorphous particles are prepared using inert-gas condensation followed by in situ compaction. Elemental segregation of Ni and Ti is observed in the consolidated nanostructured material. Amorphous, nearly pure Nickel (96%) nanophases form within the amorphous Ni50Ti50 alloy. Combining atom probe tomography and scanning transmission electron microscopy with computer modelling, we explore the formation process of such amorphous nanophase structure. It is shown that the Ni rich amorphous phase in the consolidated nanostructured material is responsible for the ferromagnetic behavior of the sample whereas the rapidly quenched amorphous and crystalline samples with the same chemical composition (Ni50Ti50) were found to be paramagnetic. Due to the high cooling rate obtained using the inert gas condensation technique, an exceptional control over the crystallization processes is possible, promoting the formation of various amorphous phases, which are not obtained by standard rapid quenching techniques. Our findings demonstrate the potential of amorphous metallic nanostructures as advanced technological materials, and useful magnetic compounds.
