Archaeological sturgeon remains from the southern North Sea basin used to be automatically attributed to Acipenser sturio, since this was the only acipenserid species believed to occur there. These species identifications, however, were in need of revision after a growing number of indications were found for the historical presence of Acipenser oxyrinchus in western Europe. In this study, morphological and genetic data on sturgeon remains from archaeological sites along the southern North Sea are revised. A large number of Dutch, Belgian, British and some French archaeological sturgeon remains, dating from theMesolithic up to Late Modern times, are morphologically examined and fish sizes are reconstructed. This study of >7000 acipenserid bones proves the sympatric occurrence of European sturgeon A. sturio and Atlantic sturgeon A. oxyrinchus in the southern North Sea at least since the Neolithic (fourth millennium BC onwards), with A. oxyrinchus remains always outnumbering those of A. sturio. Raversijde - sinds 1970 deel van de stad Oostende, voordien Middelkerke - gaat terug tot een laatmiddeleeuwse vissersnederzetting met de naam ‘Walraversijde’. Deze vissersnederzetting was gesitueerd nabij de huidige grens Middelkerke/Oostende in een zone die zich grotendeels binnen het huidige provinciedomein Raversijde bevindt, maar zich ook nog in belangrijke mate uitstrekt tot op het strand ter hoogte van dit domein., In deze publicatie over archeologisch onderzoek in Raversijde komen de opgravingscampagnes op het grondgebied van het provinciedomein Raversijde uit de periode 1992-1998 uitvoerig aan bod. Daarnaast worden een aantal markante opgravingsresultaten van na 1998 belicht: het muntdepot dat op het einde van 1999 werd aangetroffen, de in 2003 aangesneden zone met begravingen en de in 2005 geïdentificeerde Romeinse dijk., Dit 8ste deel van de Relicta Monografieën behandelt chronologisch de resten en sporen uit de prehistorie, de Romeinse periode, de late middeleeuwen en de vroeg-moderne tijden. Deze publicatie is in de eerste plaats een opgravingsverslag: ze beschrijft, analyseert en interpreteert de belangrijkste sporen samen met een selectie van de aangetroffen mobiele resten en de resultaten van natuurwetenschappelijk onderzoek.

An assemblage of about 200 fish remains, recently collected from late Miocene early Pliocene deposits of the Sinda area, is described. Although the collection is small, several taxa not previously reported from these localities are included. Gymnarchus, Hydrocynus and Bagrus are new for the Sinda-Mogari ichthyofauna, whereas the previously doubtful presence of Clariidae is now confirmed by several finds, including one identifiable as Clarias. The discovery of three outer premaxillary teeth of Shungura Sindacharax along with the numerous Sindacharax lepersonnei specimens is surprising. The Shungura form is considered conspecific with Sindacharax lepersonnei. Other represented taxa are Synodontis, Auchenoglanis and Lates rhachirhinchus. Comparison of the ichthofauna from the oldest deposits (Ongoliba Beds) with that of the Middle Member of the Sinda Beds shows a decline in characiforms and an increase in siluriforms through time. Reconstruction of the former aquatic environment indicates a large and deep permanent water-body with shallow and marshy habitats at its margins.

Booklet on urban archaeology of Ostend

International audience; The fish fauna is presented from Asa Koma; a prehistoric site dated around 1800 cal BC and located in Djibouti near Lake Abhé. The site comprises numerous hearths from which the fi sh bones that form the majority of the faunal remains were recovered. Only two fish species occur, namely Oreochromis niloticus and Clarias gariepinus, which are also the two major taxa occurring in the saline lake today. The skeletal element distribution and the frequency of charred remains were analysed and, in addition, detailed size reconstructions were carried out. On the basis of modern skeletons from 47 tilapia and 39 Clarias, the metrical relationship between fish length and individual bone measurements (32 measuring distances for tilapia and 40 for Clarias) was established with the aid of the “least squares method”. The equations are all listed for future use by other researchers. The fish and other fauna do not allow a precise environmental reconstruction, but the large size of the Clarias possibly indicates less saline conditions than today. Using the reconstructed sizes of the fi sh from Asa Koma, modern data on the behaviour of the species, ethnographic and archaeological parallels, and palaeohydrological data, attempts are made to establish the most likely season of fi shing, the possible location of the fishing grounds, and the fishing methods that may have been used. Finally, the possible fish preparation and fish processing methods are discussed.
