Abstract

Excited states in the N = 30 neutron-rich 49K have been studied using multi-nucleon transfer reactions with thin targets and the PRISMA-CLARA spectrometer combined with thick-target - coincidence data from Gammasphere. The d3/2 proton-hole state is located 92 keV above the s1/2 ground state and the proton-particle f7/2 state is suggested at 2104 keV. Three other levels are established as involving the coupling to 2+ of two neutrons above the N = 28 shell. The measured or estimated lifetimes served to reinforce the interpretation of the observed level structure which is found to be in satisfactory agreement with shell model calculations.

Abstract

Lifetimes of low-lying excited states of the neutron-rich 44, 46Ar nuclei, populated via multinucleon transfer reactions, are measured by means of the differential recoil distance Doppler shift method. The extracted electromagnetic transition probabilities are compared with previous intermediate-energy Coulomb-excitation measurements and with large-scale shell-model calculations. The increase in the deduced B(E2 ; 2+→0+) transition probability from 44Ar to the closed-shell nucleus 46Ar contradicts the earlier results of Coulomb-excitation experiments. Shell-model calculations using different effective interactions agree with the new measured values.

Abstract

Excited states of 38Cl were populated in binary grazing reactions during the interaction of a beam of 36S ions of energy 215 MeV with a 208Pb target. The combination of the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer and the CLARA γ-ray detector array was used to identify the reaction fragments and to detect their decay via γ-ray emission. A level scheme for 38Cl is presented and discussed within the context of the systematics of neighboring nuclei and is compared with the results of state-of-the-art shell-model calculations.

Abstract

The yrast sequence of the neutron-rich dysprosium isotope 168Dy has been studied using multi-nucleon transfer reactions following collisions between a 460-MeV 82Se beam and a 170Er target. The reaction products were identified using the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer and the gamma rays detected using the CLARA HPGe-detector array. The 2+ and 4+ members of the previously measured ground state rotational band of 168Dy have been confirmed and the yrast band extended up to 10+. A tentative candidate for the 4+ to 2+ transition in 170Dy was also identified. The data on these nuclei and on the lighter even-even dysprosium isotopes are interpreted in terms of Total Routhian Surface calculations and the evolution of collectivity in the vicinity of the proton-neutron valence product maximum is discussed., 15 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Phys. Abstract

The shape transition in the neutron-rich Os isotopes is studied by investigating the neutron-rich 196Os nucleus through in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy using a two-proton transfer reaction from a 198Pt target to a 82Se beam. The beam-like recoils were detected and identified with the large-acceptance magnetic spectrometer PRISMA, and the coincident γ rays were measured with the advanced gamma tracking array (AGATA) demonstrator. The de-excitation of the low-lying levels of the yrast-band of 196Os were identified for the first time. The results are compared with state-of-the-art beyond-mean-field calculations, performed for the even-even 188-198Os isotopes. The new results suggest a smooth transition in the Os isotopes from a more axial rotational behavior towards predominately vibrational nuclei through triaxial configurations. An almost perfect γ-unstable/triaxial rotor yrast band is predicted for 196Os which is in agreement with the experimentally measured excited states. © 2014 American Physical Society., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Abstract

The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR), under construction at Darmstadt will provide intense relativistic beams of exotic nuclei at its Superconducting-FRagment Separator. High-resolution in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy will be performed in the HISPEC experiment, using the European Advanced GAmma-ray Tracking Array (AGATA). The PreSPEC-AGATA campaign is the predecessor of HISPEC and runs from 2012 to 2014 at GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung GmbH. Up to19 AGATA modules were used at GSI's F Ragment Separator in 2012. We report on the status of the experiment including preliminary results from performance commissioning.

Abstract

Nuclides that are considered to be isotopes of element Z = 115 were produced in the reaction 48Ca + 243Am at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung Darmstadt. The detector setup TASISpec was used. It was mounted behind the gas-filled separator TASCA. Thirty correlated α-decay chains were found, and the energies of the particles were determined with high precision. Two important spectroscopic aspects of the offline data analysis are discussed in detail: the handling of digitized preamplified signals from the silicon strip detectors, and the energy reconstruction of particles escaping to upstream detectors relying on pixel-by-pixel dead-layer thicknesses.

Abstract

The fragmentation of relativistic uranium projectiles has been exploited at the Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung laboratory to investigate the β decay of neutron-rich nuclei just beyond 208Pb. This paper reports on β-delayed γ decays of 211–213Tl, 215Pb, and 215–219Bi de-exciting states in the daughters 211–213Pb, 215Bi, and 215–219Po. The resulting partial level schemes, proposed with the help of systematics and shell-model calculations, are presented. The role of allowed Gamow-Teller and first-forbidden β transitions in this mass region is discussed.

Abstract

Excited states of $^{38}_{17}$Cl$_{21}$ were populated in grazing reactions during the interaction of a beam of $^{36}_{16}$S$_{20}$ ions of energy 215 MeV with a $^{208}_{82}$Pb$_{126}$ target. The combination of the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer and the CLARA $\gamma$-ray detector array was used to identify the reaction fragments and to detect their decay via $\gamma$-ray emission. A level scheme for $^{38}$Cl is presented with tentative spin and parity assignments. Abstract

Newsub-μs isomers have been observed in the neutron-rich Sn isotopes. 125,127,129Sn nuclei have been produced in a relativistic fission reaction of 238U on a 9Be target at 750 A·MeV and by the fragmentation of 136Xe at 600 A·MeV populating high-spin yrast states. In addition to the already known μs isomers, three new ones with sub-μs half-lives have been observed. These yrast isomers are the high-spin members of the ν(d−1 3/2h−2 11/2) and νh−n 11/2, seniority v = 3 multiplets leading to isomeric (23/2+) and (27/2−) states, respectively. Added to the already known 19/2+μs isomers in this region the current work completes the systematic information of neutron-hole excitations toward the filling of the last h11/2 orbital at N = 82. The results are discussed in the framework of state-of-the-art shell-model calculations using realistic interactions.

Abstract

The CLARA-PRISMA Setup is a powerful tool for spectroscopic studies of neutron-rich nuclei produced in multi-nucleon transfer and deep-inelastic reactions. It combines the large acceptance spectrometer PRISMA with the gamma-ray array CLARA. Currently at LNL is being constructed the heavy-ion detector DANTE, based on Micro-Channel Plates, that will be installed at the CLARA-PRISMA setup. DANTE Will open the possibility of measuring gamma-gamma Doppler-corrected coincidences for the events outside the acceptance Of PRISMA. In this manuscript some results obtained with the CLARA-PRISMA setup will be discussed, in addition to the description and performance of the first prototype for the heavy-ion detector DANTE.

Abstract

Fission fragment mass distributions were measured in heavy-ion induced fissions using 238 U target nucleus. The measured mass distributions changed drastically with incident energy. The results are explained by a change of the ratio between fusion and qasifission with nuclear orientation. A calculation based on a fluctuation dissipation model reproduced the mass distributions and their incident energy dependence. Fusion probability was determined in the analysis, and the values were consistent with those determined from the evaporation residue cross sections.

Abstract

We report on the observation of a new isomeric state in 68Ni. We suggest that the newly observed state at 168(1) keV above the first 2 + state is a π(2p-2h) 0 + state across the major Z=28 shell gap. Abstract

The neutron-rich lead isotopes, up to Pb216, have been studied for the first time, exploiting the fragmentation of a primary uranium beam at the FRS-RISING setup at GSI. The observed isomeric states exhibit electromagnetic transition strengths which deviate from state-of-the-art shell-model calculations. It is shown that their complete description demands the introduction of effective three-body interactions and two-body transition operators in the conventional neutron valence space beyond Pb208.

Abstract

Abstract: Neutron rich nuclei around 48Ca have been measured with the CLARA–PRISMA setup, making use of 48Ca on 64Ni binary reactions, at 5.9 MeV/A. Angular distributions of γ rays give evidence, in several transfer channels, for a large spin alignment () perpendicular to the reaction plane, making it possible to firmly establish spin and parities of the excited states. In the case of 49Ca, states arising from different types of particle–core couplings are, for the first time, unambiguously identified on basis of angular distribution, polarization and lifetime measurements. Shell model and particle–vibration coupling calculations are used to pin down the nature of the states. Evidence is found for the presence, in the same excitation energy region, of two types of coupled states, i.e. single particle coupled to either 48Ca or 50Ca simple configurations, and particle–vibration coupled states based on the phonon of 48Ca. Abstract

Weak interactions cause the atomic nuclei to decay via beta and double beta decays. Double beta decays are extremely rare since they are weak-interaction processes of the second order. Also (single) beta decays can be extremely rare. This can be caused by either a large di ff erence between the spins of the initial and final state (the so-called “forbidden” beta decays) or an extremely small Q value (decay energy) of the decay. All these cases are discussed in this article, and particular emphasis is given to the neutrino- less double electron capture on the double beta side of decays. peerReviewed

Abstract

The gamma-ray multiplicity and total energy emitted by the heavy nucleus 254No have been measured at 2 different beam energies. From these measurements, the initial distributions of spin I and excitation energy E * of 254No were constructed. The distributions display a saturation in excitation energy, which allows a direct determination of the fission barrier. 254No is the heaviest shell-stabilized nucleus with a measured fission barrier. © Owned by the authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2014.

Abstract

Nuclides that are considered to be isotopes of element Z = 115 were produced in the reaction 48Ca + 243Am at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung Darmstadt. The detector setup TASISpec was used. It was mounted behind the gas-filled separator TASCA. Thirty correlated α-decay chains were found, and the energies of the particles were determined with high precision. Two important spectroscopic aspects of the offline data analysis are discussed in detail: the handling of digitized preamplified signals from the silicon strip detectors, and the energy reconstruction of particles escaping to upstream detectors relying on pixel-by-pixel dead-layer thicknesses.

Abstract

We present a new two-body finite-range and momentum-dependent but density-independent effective interaction, which can be interpreted as a regularized zero-range force. We show that no three-body or density-dependent terms are needed for a correct description of saturation properties in infinite matter, that is, on the level of low-energy density functional, the physical three-body effects can be efficiently absorbed in effective two-body terms. The new interaction gives a very satisfying equation of state of nuclear matter and opens up extremely interesting perspectives for the mean-field and beyond-mean-field descriptions of atomic nuclei., 4 pages, including 2 figures and 1 table, explanations added, Figure 1 corrected, to be published in EPJ Web of Conferences
