The submillimeter and millimeter ((sub-)mm) sky contains a vast wealth of information that is both complementary and inaccessible to other wavelengths. Over half the light we receive is observable at (sub-)mm wavelengths, yet we have mapped only a small portion of the sky at sufficient spatial resolution and sensitivity to detect and resolve distant galaxies or star forming cores within their large-scale environments. For decades the astronomical community has highlighted the need for a large, high-throughput (sub-)mm ($\lambda\sim 0.35-10$ mm) single dish. The Atacama Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope (AtLAST), with its 50-m aperture and $2^\circ$ maximal field of view, aims to be such a facility. We present here the preliminary design concept for AtLAST, developed through an EU Horizon 2020-funded design study. Our design approach begins with a long lineage of (sub-)mm telescopes, relies on calculations and simulations to realize the optics, and uses finite element analysis to optimize the designs for the mechanical structure and subsystems. The demanding technical requirements for AtLAST, set by transformative science goals, have motivated the design effort to combine novel concepts with lessons learned from the past experience of previous efforts. The result is an innovative rocking chair design with six instrument bays, two of which are mounted on Nasmyth platforms, inside a large receiver cabin. Ultimately, AtLAST aims to achieve a surface accuracy of $\leq 20~\mu$m root mean square half wavefront error, corresponding a Ruze efficiency $>50\%$ at 950~GHz. We conclude that closed-loop metrology of the active primary surface will likely be required to achieve our surface accuracy goal. In the next phase of the project, we will prototype and test such metrology on existing platforms, with a goal of delivering a mature, construction-ready design by the end of this decade., Comment: This version addresses the second round A&A referee reports

The nuclear region of the Milky Way is believed to host a nuclear stellar disk, co-spatial with the gaseous central molecular zone. Previous kinematical studies detected faster rotation for the stars belonging to the nuclear stellar disk, compared to the surrounding regions. We analyze the rotation velocity of stars at the nuclear stellar disk, and compare them with its analog in a few control fields just outside this region. We limit our analysis to stars in the red clump of the color magnitude diagram, in order to be able to relate their mean de-reddened luminosity with distance along the line of sight. We used a proper motion catalog, obtained from point spread function photometry on VVV images, to construct maps of the transverse velocity for these stars. We complemented our analysis with radial velocities from the 17th data release of the APOGEE survey. We find that the main difference between the nuclear stellar disk region and its surroundings is that at the former we see only stars moving eastward, which we believe are located in front of the Galactic center. On the contrary, in every other direction, we see the brightest red clump stars moving eastward, and the faintest ones moving westward, as expected for a rotating disk. We interpret these observations as being produced by the central molecular zone, hiding stars behind itself. What we observe is compatible with being produced by just the absence of the component at the back, without requiring the presence of a cold, fast rotating disk. This component is also not clearly detected in the newest release of the APOGEE catalog. We introduce a multifield dark energy model with a nonflat field-space metric, in which one field is dynamical while the others have constant spatial gradients. The model is predictive at the background level, leading to an early dark energy component at high redshifts and a suppressed fraction of late-time anisotropy. Both features have simple expressions in terms of the curvature scale of the field-space, and correspond to stable points in the phase space of possible solutions. Because of the coupling between time and space-dependent scalar fields, vector field perturbations develop tachyonic instabilities at scales below the Hubble radius, thus being potentially observable in the number count of galaxies. Overall, the presence of a nontrivial field-space curvature also leads to the appearance of instabilities on scalar perturbations, which can impact the matter density distribution at large scales., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures. We explore the cosmological dynamics of a minimalistic yet generic string-inspired model for multifield dark energy. Adopting a supergravity four-dimensional viewpoint, we motivate the model's structure arising from superstring compactifications involving a chiral superfield and a pure $U(1)$ gauge sector. The chiral sector gives rise to a pair of scalar fields, such as the axio-dilaton, which are kinetically coupled. However, the scalar potential depends on only one of them, further entwined with the vector field through the gauge kinetic function. The model has two anisotropic attractor solutions that, despite a steep potential and thanks to multifield dynamics, could explain the current accelerated expansion of the Universe while satisfying observational constraints on the late-times cosmological anisotropy. Nevertheless, justifying the parameter space allowing for slow roll dynamics together with the correct cosmological parameters, would be challenging within the landscape of string theory. Intriguingly, we find that the vector field, particularly at one of the studied fixed points, plays a crucial role in enabling geodesic trajectories in the scalar field space while realizing slow-roll dynamics with a steep potential. 114. Loss Shaping Constraints for Long-Term Time Series Forecasting

Several applications in time series forecasting require predicting multiple steps ahead. Despite the vast amount of literature in the topic, both classical and recent deep learning based approaches have mostly focused on minimising performance averaged over the predicted window. We observe that this can lead to disparate distributions of errors across forecasting steps, especially for recent transformer architectures trained on popular forecasting benchmarks. That is, optimising performance on average can lead to undesirably large errors at specific time-steps. In this work, we present a Constrained Learning approach for long-term time series forecasting that aims to find the best model in terms of average performance that respects a user-defined upper bound on the loss at each time-step. We call our approach loss shaping constraints because it imposes constraints on the loss at each time step, and leverage recent duality results to show that despite its non-convexity, the resulting problem has a bounded duality gap. We propose a practical Primal-Dual algorithm to tackle it, and demonstrate that the proposed approach exhibits competitive average performance in time series forecasting benchmarks, while shaping the distribution of errors across the predicted window.

115. Merge and strip: dark matter-free dwarf galaxies in clusters can be formed by galaxy mergers

Recent observations of galaxy mergers inside galaxy cluster environments report high star formation rates in the ejected tidal tails, which point towards currently developing tidal dwarf galaxies. We test whether these dwarf objects could get stripped from the galaxy potential by the galaxy cluster and thus populate it with dwarf galaxies. To this end, we perform three high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations of mergers between spiral galaxies in a cluster environment, varying the initial orbit of the infalling galaxies with respect to the cluster center. We demonstrate that cluster environments are indeed capable of stripping tidal dwarf galaxies from the host potential in all tested setups. In the three orbit scenarios, we find 3, 7, and 8 tidal dwarf galaxies per merger, respectively, which survive longer than 1 Gyr after the merger event. Exposed to ram pressure, these gas dominated dwarf galaxies exhibit high star formation rates while also losing gas to the environment. Experiencing a strong headwind due to their motion through the intracluster medium, they quickly lose momentum and start spiraling towards the cluster center, reaching distances on the order of ~Mpc from their progenitor. About 4 Gyr after the merger event, we still find several intact dwarf galaxies, demonstrating that such objects can prevail for a significant fraction of the Hubble time. Comparing their contribution to the observed galaxy mass function in clusters, our results indicate that ~30% of dwarf galaxies in clusters could have been formed by stripping from galaxy mergers., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures. A Roman $\{2\}$-dominating function (R2F) is a function $f:V\rightarrow \{0,1,2\}$ with the property that for every vertex $v\in V$ with $f(v)=0$ there is a neighbor $u$ of $v$ with $f(u)=2$, or there are two neighbors $x,y$ of $v$ with $f(x)=f(y)=1$. A total Roman $\{2\}$-dominating function (TR2DF) is an R2F $f$ such that the set of vertices with $f(v)>0$ induce a subgraph with no isolated vertices. The weight of a TR2DF is the sum of its function values over all vertices, and the minimum weight of a TR2DF of $G$ is the total Roman $\{2\}$-domination number $\gamma_{tR2}(G).$ In this paper, we initiate the study of total Roman $\{2\}$-dominating functions, where properties are established. Moreover, we present various bounds on the total Roman $\{2\}$-domination number. We also show that the decision problem associated with $\gamma_{tR2}(G)$ is NP-complete for bipartite and chordal graphs. {Moreover, we show that it is possible to compute this parameter in linear time for bounded clique-width graphs (including tres).}

A DRDF is an outer-independent total double Roman dominating function (OITDRDF) on $\Gamma$ if the set of vertices labeled $0$ induces an edgeless subgraph and the subgraph induced by the vertices with a non-zero label has no isolated vertices. The weight of an OITDRDF is the sum of its map values over all vertices, and the outer independent total Roman dominating number $\gamma_{tdR}^{oi}(\Gamma)$ is the minimum weight of an OITDRDF on $\Gamma$. First, we prove that the problem of determining $\gamma _{tdR}^{oi}(\Gamma)$ is NP-complete for bipartite and chordal graphs, after that, we prove that it is solvable in linear time when we are restricting to bounded clique-width graphs. We first show that the problem of determining }$\gamma _{dR}^{m}(G)$ {is NP-complete for bipartite, chordal and planar graphs. But it is solvable in linear time for bounded clique-width graphs including trees, cographs and distance-hereditary graphs. Moreover, we establish various relationships relating }$\gamma _{dR}^{m}(G)$ to some domination parameters. {For the class of trees, we show that for every tree }$T$ {of order }$n\geq 4,$ $\gamma _{dR}^{m}(T)\leq \frac{5}{4}n$ {and we characterize all trees attaining the bound. Finally, the exact values of }$\gamma _{dR}^{m}(G) $ {are given for paths and cycles.

The Roman domination in graphs is well-studied in graph theory. The topic is related to a defensive strategy problem in which the Roman legions are settled in some secure cities of the Roman Empire. The deployment of the legions around the Empire is designed in such a way that a sudden attack to any undefended city could be quelled by a legion from a strong neighbour. There is an additional condition: no legion can move if doing so leaves its base city defenceless. In this manuscript we start the study of a variant of Roman domination in graphs: the triple Roman domination. We consider that any city of the Roman Empire must be able to be defended by at least three legions. These legions should be either in the attacked city or in one of its neighbours. We determine various bounds on the triple Roman domination number for general graphs, and we give exact values for some graph families. Moreover, complexity results are also obtained.

Slow rotator galaxies are distinct amongst galaxy populations, with simulations suggesting that a mix of minor and major mergers are responsible for their formation. A promising path to resolve outstanding questions on the type of merger responsible, is by investigating deep imaging of massive galaxies for signs of potential merger remnants. We utilise deep imaging from the Subaru-Hyper Suprime Cam Wide data to search for tidal features in massive ($\log_{10}(M_*/M_{\odot}) > 10$) early-type galaxies (ETGs) in the SAMI Galaxy Survey. We perform a visual check for tidal features on images where the galaxy has been subtracted using a Multi-Gauss Expansion (MGE) model. We find that $31\pm 2$ percent of our sample show tidal features. When comparing galaxies with and without features, we find that the distributions in stellar mass, light-weighted mean stellar population age and H$\alpha$ equivalent width are significantly different, whereas spin ($\lambda_{R_e}$), ellipticity and bulge to total ratio have similar distributions. When splitting our sample in age, we find that galaxies below the median age (10.8 Gyr) show a correlation between the presence of shells and lower $\lambda_{R_e}$, as expected from simulations. We also find these younger galaxies which are classified as having "strong" shells have lower $\lambda_{R_e}$. However, simulations suggest that merger features become undetectable within $\sim 2-4$ Gyr post-merger. This implies that the relationship between tidal features and merger history disappears for galaxies with older stellar ages, i.e. those that are more likely to have merged long ago., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 22 pages, 14 figures

This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of distribution grid upgrades costs necessary to integrate Community Solar (CS) projects. The innovative methodology proposed for this quantification is based on incremental least-cost expansion of the distribution system, encompassing both traditional and non-traditional grid upgrade strategies. Realistic infrastructure investment costs are obtained using a dataset of over 2,500 feeders, including various loading scenarios, and compared with empirical costs of integrating real CS projects. The results are then used to evaluate costs and deferrals from the consumers' and project developers' perspectives, assess the nature of the infrastructure upgrades and explore the potential benefits of a strategic siting of CS projects. This analysis is summarized in a set of regulatory and policy recommendations to support planning and valuation aspects related to CS.

Contactless bearings based on both permanent magnets and superconducting magnetic levitation are interesting to avoid all the tribological problems associated with contact at very low temperature. Superconducting magnetic bearings (SMBs) find application in mechanical engineering where lack of contact is a requirement or an advantage. In comparison with active magnetic bearings (AMBs), SMBs solve their inherent instability and require less complex control strategies and electronics. However, one of the current limitations is their low mechanical stiffness. Force densities are considerably lower in SMB than the state-of-art values for AMB. This fact certainly limits their applications. In this chapter, we summarize some key strategies for the improvement of radial and axial stiffness among with a description of some SMB in terms of load capability or force relaxation and discuss their advantages and disadvantages.A set of rules for the mechanical design of high-stiffness thrust superconducting magnetic bearings are proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Non-invertible symmetries in quantum field theory (QFT) generalize the familiar product rule of groups to a more general fusion rule. In many cases, gauged versions of these symmetries can be regarded as dual descriptions of invertible gauge symmetries. One may ask: are there any other types of non-invertible gauge symmetries? In theories with gravity we find a new form of non-invertible gauge symmetry that emerges in the limit of fundamental, tensionless strings. These stringy non-invertible gauge symmetries appear in standard examples such as non-abelian orbifolds. Moving away from the tensionless limit always breaks these symmetries. We also find that both the conventional form of non-invertible gauge symmetries and these stringy generalizations are realized in AdS/CFT. Although generically broken, approximate non-invertible symmetries have implications for Swampland constraints: in certain cases they can be used to prove the existence of towers of states related to the Distance Conjecture, and can sometimes explain the existence of slightly sub-extremal states which fill in the gaps in the sublattice Weak Gravity Conjecture., Comment: 56 pages, 11 figures

A statistical backscatter channel model for indoor clutter is developed for indoor RF sensing applications based on measurements. A narrowband 28 GHz sounder used a quazi-monostatic radar arrangement with an omnidirectional transmit antenna illuminating an indoor scene and a spinning horn receive antenna less than 1 m away collecting backscattered power as a function of azimuth. Median average backscatter power was found to vary over a 12 dB range, with average power generally decreasing with increasing room size. A deterministic model of average backscattered power dependent on distance to nearest wall and wall reflection coefficient reproduces observations with 4.0 dB RMS error. Distribution of power variation in azimuth around this average is reproduced within 1 dB by a random azimuth spectrum with a lognormal amplitude distribution and uniformly random phase. The model is extended to provide power distribution over both azimuth and delay (conveying range to scatterer) by combining azimuthal distribution with published results on power delay profiles in reverberant environments. The statistical model does not require a detailed room layout description, aiming to reproduce backscatter clutter statistics, as opposed to a deterministic response.

Recent stellar occultations have allowed accurate instantaneous size and apparent shape determinations of the large Kuiper belt object (50000)~Quaoar and the detection of two rings with spatially variable optical depths. In this paper we present new visible range light curve data of Quaoar from the Kepler/K2 mission, and thermal light curves at 100 and 160 $\mu$m obtained with Herschel/PACS. The K2 data provide a single-peaked period of 8.88 h, very close to the previously determined 8.84 h, and it favours an asymmetric double-peaked light curve with a 17.76 h period. We clearly detected a thermal light curve with relative amplitudes of $\sim$10% at 100 and at 160 $\mu$m. A detailed thermophysical modelling of the system shows that the measurements can be best fit with a triaxial ellipsoid shape, a volume-equivalent diameter of 1090 km, and axis ratios of a/b = 1.19 and b/c = 1.16. This shape matches the published occultation shape}, as well as visual and thermal light curve data. The radiometric size uncertainty remains relatively large ($\pm$40 km) as the ring and satellite contributions to the system-integrated flux densities are unknown. In the less likely case of negligible ring or satellite contributions, Quaoar would have a size above 1100 km and a thermal inertia $\leq$ 10 Jm$^{-2}$K$^{-1}$s$^{-1/2}$. A large and dark Weywot in combination with a possible ring contribution would lead to a size below 1080\,km in combination with a thermal inertia $\gtrsim$ 10 Jm$^{-2}$K$^{-1}$s$^{-1/2}$, notably higher than that of smaller Kuiper belt objects with similar albedo and colours. We find that Quaoar's density is in the range 1.67-1.77 g/cm$^3$, significantly lower than previous estimates. In this work, we propose and demonstrate experimentally a compact technique for the generation of cylindrical vector beams, based on a Michelson interferometer and a $\pi$-astigmatic mode converter, capable of inverting the topological charge of higher-order Laguerre-Gauss beams. Compared to previously demonstrated methods, this is relatively easy to align, and very compact. In addition, it generalises the concept of astigmatic mode conversion, commonly associated with scalar beams, to vector beams with non-homogeneous polarisation distribution. We anticipate that many of the applications based on Michelson interferometers will benefit from the unique properties of vector beams., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We search for high-velocity stars in the inner region of the Galactic bulge using a selected sample of red clump stars. Some of those stars might be considered hypervelocity stars (HVSs). Even though the HVSs ejection relies on an interaction with the supermassive black hole (SMBH) at the centre of the Galaxy, there are no confirmed detections of HVSs in the inner region of our Galaxy. With the detection of HVSs, ejection mechanism models can be constrained by exploring the stellar dynamics in the Galactic centre through a recent stellar interaction with the SMBH. Based on a previously developed methodology by our group, we searched with a sample of preliminary data from version 2 of the Vista Variables in the Via Lactea (VVV) Infrared Astrometric Catalogue (VIRAC2) and Gaia DR3 data, including accurate optical and NIR proper motions. This search resulted in a sample of 46 stars with transverse velocities larger than the local escape velocity within the Galactic bulge, of which 4 are prime candidate HVSs with high-proper motions consistent with being ejections from the Galactic centre. Adding to that, we studied a sample of reddened stars without a Gaia DR3 counterpart and found 481 stars with transverse velocities larger than the local escape velocity, from which 65 stars have proper motions pointing out of the Galactic centre and are candidate HVSs. The sources and sinks of nitrous oxide, as control emissions to the atmosphere, are generally poorly constrained for most environmental systems. Initial depth-resolved analysis of nitrous oxide flux from observation wells and the proximal surface within a nitrate contaminated aquifer system revealed high subsurface production but little escape from the surface. To better understand the environmental controls of production and emission at this site, we used a combination of isotopic, geochemical, and molecular analyses to show that chemodenitrification and bacterial denitrification are major sources of nitrous oxide in this subsurface, where low DO, low pH, and high nitrate are correlated with significant nitrous oxide production. Depth-resolved metagenomes showed that consumption of nitrous oxide near the surface was correlated with an enrichment of Clade II nitrous oxide reducers, consistent with a growing appreciation of their importance in controlling release of nitrous oxide to the atmosphere. Our work also provides evidence for the reduction of nitrous oxide at a pH of 4, well below the generally accepted limit of pH 5.

Studies suggest that ketogenic diets (KD) may improve memory in mouse models of aging and Alzheimer's disease (AD). This study determined whether a continuous or intermittent KD (IKD) enhanced cognitive behavior in the TgF344-AD rat model of AD. At 6 months-old, TgF344-AD and wild-type (WT) littermates were placed on a control (CD), KD, or IKD (morning CD and afternoon KD) provided as two meals per day for 2 or 6 months. Cognitive and motor behavior and circulating β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), AD biomarkers and blood lipids were assessed. Animals on a KD diet had elevated circulating BHB, with IKD levels intermediate to CD and KD. TgF344-AD rats displayed impaired spatial learning memory in the Barnes maze at 8 and 12 months of age and impaired motor coordination at 12 months of age. Neither KD nor IKD improved performance compared to CD. At 12 months of age, TgF344-AD animals had elevated blood lipids. IKD reduced lipids to WT levels with KD further reducing cholesterol below WT levels. This study shows that at 8 or 12 months of age, KD or IKD intervention did not improve measures of cognitive or motor behavior in TgF344-AD rats; however, both IKD and KD positively impacted circulating lipids.

Case Presentation: We describe the presentation, evaluation, and management of a young female patient presenting to the emergency department with atraumatic orbital emphysema, a rare condition. This patient was diagnosed using point-of-care ultrasound and computed tomography and was managed expectantly.Discussion: Atraumatic orbital emphysema is a rare clinical condition more common in early middle-aged female patients with certain historical features such as chronic sinusitis, facial surgery or trauma, tobacco smoking, or current upper respiratory symptoms. While most cases will resolve spontaneously, rarely this condition can lead to vision-threatening orbital compartment syndrome, requiring lateral canthotomy or needle decompression.

Angiogenesis and neurogenesis are functionally interconnected during brain development. However, the study of the vasculature has trailed other brain cell types because they are delicate and of low abundance. Here we describe a protocol extension to purify prenatal human brain endothelial and mural cells with FACS and utilize them in downstream applications, including transcriptomics, culture and organoid transplantation. This approach is simple, efficient and generates high yields from small amounts of tissue. When the experiment is completed within a 24 h postmortem interval, these healthy cells produce high-quality data in single-cell transcriptomics experiments. These vascular cells can be cultured, passaged and expanded for many in vitro assays, including Matrigel vascular tube formation, microfluidic chambers and metabolic measurements. Under these culture conditions, primary vascular cells maintain expression of cell-type markers for at least 3 weeks. Finally, we describe how to use primary vascular cells for transplantation into cortical organoids, which captures key features of neurovascular interactions in prenatal human brain development. In terms of timing, tissue processing and staining requires ~3 h, followed by an additional 3 h of FACS. The transplant procedure of primary, FACS-purified vascular cells into cortical organoids requires an additional 2 h. The time required for different transcriptomic and epigenomic protocols can vary based on the specific application, and we offer strategies to mitigate batch effects and optimize data quality. In sum, this vasculo-centric approach offers an integrated platform to interrogate neurovascular interactions and human brain vascular development.

This paper details a class of metal-based space-time metasurfaces for application in wireless communications scenarios. Concretely, we describe space-time metasurfaces that periodically alternate their properties in time between three spatial states: "air", "conductor" and "grating". We analyze the physics of these metastructures via a computationally-efficient analytical technique based on the use of Floquet-Bloch series, integral equations and circuit models. By doing so, we reveal important features of these spatiotemporal metasurfaces: scattering parameters, field profiles, diffraction angles and nature of the space-time harmonics. The results, corroborated with a self-implemented numerical FDTD approach, show the potential application of these space-time metasurfaces as beamformers acting in reflection, in transmission or both. The amplitude and direction of the diffracted orders can be electronically controlled with the paramaters of the metasurface. Moreover, the intrinsic ability of time-modulated diffractive metasurfaces to mix and multiply frequencies is tested. We show how two different modulations can lead to the same diffraction angle but with different mixed output frequencies.

FRIPON is an efficient ground-based network for the detection and characterization of fireballs, which was initiated in France in 2016 with over one hundred cameras and which has been very successfully extended to Europe and Canada with one hundred more stations. After seven successful years of operation in the northern hemisphere, it seems necessary to extend this network towards the southern hemisphere - where the lack of detection is evident - to obtain an exhaustive view of fireball activity. The task of extending the network to any region outside the northern hemisphere presents the challenge of a new installation process, where the recommended and tested version of the several sub-systems that compose a station had to be replaced due to regional availability and compatibility considerations, as well as due to constant software and hardware obsolescence and updates. In Chile, we have a unique geography, with a vast extension in latitude, as well as desert regions, which have generated the need to evaluate the scientific and technical performance of the network under special conditions, prioritizing the optimization of a set of factors related to the deployment process, as well as the feasible and achievable versions of the required components, the geographical location of the stations, and their respective operational, maintenance, safety, and communication conditions. In this talk, we will present the current status of this effort, including a brief report on the obstacles and difficulties encountered and how we have solved them, the current operational status of the network in Northern Chile, as well as the challenges and prospects for the densification of the network over South America., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, International Meteor Conference proceedings

This report introduces a new family of multimodal models, Gemini, that exhibit remarkable capabilities across image, audio, video, and text understanding. The Gemini family consists of Ultra, Pro, and Nano sizes, suitable for applications ranging from complex reasoning tasks to on-device memory-constrained use-cases. Evaluation on a broad range of benchmarks shows that our most-capable Gemini Ultra model advances the state of the art in 30 of 32 of these benchmarks - notably being the first model to achieve human-expert performance on the well-studied exam benchmark MMLU, and improving the state of the art in every one of the 20 multimodal benchmarks we examined. We believe that the new capabilities of the Gemini family in cross-modal reasoning and language understanding will enable a wide variety of use cases. We discuss our approach toward post-training and deploying Gemini models responsibly to users through services including Gemini, Gemini Advanced, Google AI Studio, and Cloud Vertex AI.

Recent pulsed-power experiments have demonstrated the formation of astrophysically-relevant, differentially rotating plasmas [1]. Key features of the plasma flows are the discovery of a quasi-Keplerian rotation curve, the launching of highly-collimated angular-momentum-transporting axial jets, and a hollow density structure sustained by the centrifugal barrier effect. In this communication we discuss several features of the plasma structure in these experiments through order-of-magnitude models. First, we show that the observed rotation velocity would produce a centrifugal force strong enough to support the hollow density profile. Second, we show that the axial jet should diverge much faster than what was observed, were it not for a magnetized halo with 3T which surrounds the jet and exerts pressure on the interface.Finally, we discuss the temperature structure in the axial jet and plasma halo.We show that a 3T magnetic field would also suppress electron heat conduction,leading to the flat profile observed experimentally. We also find that the axial jet is efficiently radiatively cooled,whereas the halo is not, which would explain the thermal decoupling between the two regions., Comment: Second version with clarifications on text and figures, and explicit calculations regarding the omega-effect. 136. Psychometric Properties of the Fit-Choice Scale Factors Influencing the Choice of Education Careers in Chilean Pedagogy Students

- Abstract
Introduction: Given the global concern for attracting more and better candidates to teaching careers, we must have instruments to help us identify these potential candidates. In Chile, there needs to be more evidence of the motivational and perceptual factors that influence the choice of studies in Education. The aim is to study the psychometric properties of the Fit-Choice scale in the Chilean population. This scale was developed in Australia by Watt & Richardson (2007) and translated into Spanish by Gratacós & López-Jurado (2016) and identifies factors that influence the choice of careers in education. Method: A cross-sectional instrumental design was adopted. A total of 921 students from four Chilean universities (65% women) who are in their fifth year of initial teacher training for early childhood education (9.1%), primary education (17.1%), and various disciplines of secondary education (73.8%) participated in the study. The instrument's factor structure was evaluated through a confirmatory factor analysis with a maximum likelihood estimator. Evidence of internal consistency was obtained using McDonald's Omega ([omega]), obtaining good reliability indexes. Results: The results show that the version of the scale is valid and reliable for use in the Chilean context. The factor structure of the original scale, which consists of two subscales and 18 factors, is tested. The findings are consistent with the version validated in other Spanish-speaking countries. Discussion or Conclusion: This scale is valid and reliable, and its use is appropriate for Spanish-speaking contexts such as Chile. The psychometric characteristics show that it is possible to use this instrument for its specific purposes but also, given its cross-cultural validity, to conduct comparative research with other countries where it has been validated.

137. Economic Rationale Shaping Music Teacher Education: The Case of Spain

- Abstract
This article discusses the literature on music teacher education programmes for mainstream education in order to undertake critical reflection on what we are doing and why in our university classrooms, what theories are implicit and what could be done to improve our programmes. After analysis, mainly from European contexts, and considering the Spanish one in particular, we find an influence of the economic -- and, ultimately, political -- rationale on substantial aspects, manifested in apparent disjunctions between musical and educational features, as well as in formal issues, fundamentally due to the European Higher Education Area. In the end, it is concluded that, without renouncing the economic aspects, curricula should be more addressed towards the integration of pedagogical and musical knowledge, and the treatment of aspects related to social justice, if we do not want an uncritical reproduction of rationalities that are often obsolete in the training of pre-service music teachers.

- Abstract
This study examined the effects of an academic intervention, associated with music, on the conceptual understanding of musical notation and arithmetic of fractions of first-year students of high school from a mixed Spanish multicultural and socioeconomic public school. The students (N = 12) had previous concepts about musical instruction, as well as operations with fractions, particularly addition. This is an observational study in which a battery of four tasks was administered before and after an instruction based on a musical environment, music being a semiotic function. The instruction included 9 sessions of 50 minutes each. The results prior to the intervention show deficiencies in a concept that was not new to the students, however, after the intervention the students were competent in addition with fractions. - Abstract
A very small number of young people enter youth custody between age 16 and 18 (about 4 in 1000 males), yet the consequences are severe. They spend an average of 7 months in youth custody and such incarceration has been related to negative outcomes in the longer term even if they can establish themselves in the labour market. In this paper, we evaluate whether there is a relationship between GCSE qualifications in English and maths and the probability of youth custody using administrative data in England. We are hindered in this because the majority of young people who end up in youth custody are not entered or fail their GCSEs in these subjects. Although regression results are consistent with educational achievement being a factor in why people end up in youth custody, they strongly suggest that both non-entry/low achievement and youth custody are correlated with severe vulnerabilities which are partially picked up by the explanatory variables available in administrative data (in particular indicators for special needs, disadvantage and being from some ethnic minority groups). Another interesting insight is that for many, problems only emerge (or at least become evident) in early or middle adolescence.
