Abstract

Universities are central players and important economic actors in many regions, and many of them are, in general, nationally and internationally active in respect of matters related to sustainable development. But there is a paucity of research which examines their contributions towards sustainability efforts at the local level, i.e. in the places they are situated. This paper addresses this need, by reporting on a qualitative study deploying a Matrix, which allows an analysis and reporting of regional sustainable development initiatives of a set of 22 universities in industrialised and developing countries. Recommendations to enhance their role are provided, including the importance of pursuing partnerships and joint initiatives, understanding the need of local communities, and making their know-how more widely available. The scientific value of this research is related to the understanding of how the interaction between universities and local communities happens and by shedding light to this topic, it supports universities to improve their own actions. Its implications are two-fold: it demonstrates the potential of universities as local players and outlines the range of activities they may engage with, and which may allow them to act as pillars to local sustainability initiatives.

108. Application of risk analysis to landfills in Italy: Developed and tested methodology at provincial level.

Abstract

In the Italian authorization procedure for the construction of a landfill, the risk analysis (RA) is mandatory in case of request for derogation from the current legislation (Ministerial Decree (D.M.) 27 September 2010) in order to demonstrate that there is no risk for the environment. This paper describes the experience of the Province of Brescia, public body appointed for giving authorizations for new landfills, and its collaboration with the University of Brescia for the specific topic of RA applied to landfills. The research was undertaken because a lack of complete and specific indications about the application of such methodology to landfills has been identified. In particular, the province of Brescia faced the issue of verifying the proper application of such methodology in relevant cases. After referring to the legal and technical framework, including the current national legislation and a summary of the technical documents available for the topic (guidelines and instructions by technical bodies), the paper outlines the technical-preliminary approach applied by the Province of Brescia. This is complemented by a description of the methodological approach followed for RA for groundwater and for gaseous emissions, with a focus on biogas, together with the presentation of the results for three relevant case studies. The critical aspects that were faced and the proposal to overcome them, which are under discussion with the responsible bodies, are described as well. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

138. SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT OF SEDIMENTARY RESOURCES: A CASE STUDY OF THE EGADI PROJECT.

Abstract

Multiple activities carried out on coastal areas expose marine sediments to contamination and their management has a great socioeconomic importance with a high impact on economic development of coastal areas. However, there is an increasing shift towards the use of more sustainable approaches for managing 'contaminated' sediments. Using a case study of the Favignana Habour in Italy, this paper evaluates three approaches for the management of these sediments. The results of simulations carried out by SiteWiseTM software show that the use of contaminated sediment as filling material for Confined Disposal Facilities has lower environmental footprint than treatment and reuse of sedimentary resources on shore. The implications for these results for the development of effective policies and practices by all key stakeholders are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
