101. Radial Squeezed States and Rydberg Wave Packets

Abstract

We outline an analytical framework for the treatment of radial Rydberg wave packets produced by short laser pulses in the absence of external electric and magnetic fields. Wave packets of this type are localized in the radial coordinates and have p-state angular distributions. We argue that they can be described by a particular analytical class of squeezed states, called radial squeezed states. For hydrogenic Rydberg atoms, we discuss the time evolution of the corresponding hydrogenic radial squeezed states. They are found to undergo decoherence and collapse, followed by fractional and full revivals. We also present their uncertainty product and uncertainty ratio as functions of time. Our results show that hydrogenic radial squeezed states provide a suitable analytical description of hydrogenic Rydberg atoms excited by short-pulsed laser fields., published in Physical Review A

Abstract

We study radial wave packets produced by short-pulsed laser fields acting on Rydberg atoms, using analytical tools from supersymmetry-based quantum-defect theory. We begin with a time-dependent perturbative calculation for alkali-metal atoms, incorporating the atomic-excitation process. This provides insight into the general wave packet behavior and demonstrates agreement with conventional theory. We then obtain an alternative analytical description of a radial wave packet as a member of a particular family of squeezed states, which we call radial squeezed states. By construction, these have close to minimum uncertainty in the radial coordinates during the first pass through the outer apsidal point. The properties of radial squeezed states are investigated, and they are shown to provide a description of certain aspects of Rydberg atoms excited by short-pulsed laser fields. We derive expressions for the time evolution and the autocorrelation of the radial squeezed states, and we study numerically and analytically their behavior in several alkali-metal atoms. We present a theoretical construction for closest-to-classical wave packets localized in both angular and radial coordinates and moving on a keplerian orbit. The method produces a family of elliptical squeezed states for the planar Coulomb problem that minimize appropriate uncertainty relations in radial and angular coordinates. The time evolution of these states is studied for orbits with different semimajor axes and eccentricities. The elliptical squeezed states may be useful for a description of the motion of Rydberg wave packets excited by short-pulsed lasers in the presence of external fields, which experiments are attempting to produce. We outline an extension of the method to include certain effects of quantum defects appearing in the alkali-metal atoms used in experiments., Comment: published in Phys. Rev. Abstract

Uncertainty relations between a bounded coordinate operator and a conjugate momentum operator frequently appear in quantum mechanics. We prove that physically reasonable minimum-uncertainty solutions to such relations have quantized expectation values of the conjugate momentum. This implies, for example, that the mean angular momentum is quantized for any minimum-uncertainty state obtained from any uncertainty relation involving the angular-momentum operator and a conjugate coordinate. Experiments specifically seeking to create minimum-uncertainty states localized in angular coordinates therefore must produce packets with integer angular momentum., Comment: accepted for publication in Physical Review A

A general technique is outlined for investigating supersymmetry properties of a charged spin-$\half$ quantum particle in time-varying electromagnetic fields. The case of a time-varying uniform magnetic induction is examined and shown to provide a physical realization of a supersymmetric quantum-mechanical system. Group-theoretic methods are used to factorize the relevant Schr\"odinger equations and obtain eigensolutions. Abstract

The preceding paper, by Martin and Barrientos (Phys. Rev. A 43, 4061 (1991)), comments on our supersymmetry-inspired model of atomic physics. We relate this to other Comments (Rau, Phys. Rev. Lett. 56, 95 (1986) and Goodfriend, Phys. Rev. A 41, 1730 (1990)) and point out that, although the mathematics and physics of the 1974 Simons model (J. Chem. Phys. 60, 645 (1974)) is similar to ours, it is not identical. This is elucidated by explicitly comparing our symmetry-based approach to the more phenomenological approach of Martin and Barrientos.

Chem. 55, 756 (1971)). We rebut the first two criticisms explicitly. This makes the third criticism moot. We stand by our results.

Abstract

The gravitational phenomenology of theories compactified from higher dimensions is investigated. Emphasis is placed on the consequences in string theory of tensor-induced spontaneous breaking of the higher-dimensional Lorentz symmetry. The role played by this mechanism in causing a gravitational version of the Higgs effect and in compactification is studied. The phenomenology of compactified theories with massless modes is compared with experiment via an examination of non-leading but observable gravitational effects arising in the presence of a localized matter distribution. Further constraints from known cosmological features of the universe are presented. The results significantly constrain many theories involving extra dimensions in their perturbative regime. A mechanism is needed that leaves massless the physical spacetime components of the higher-dimensional metric while generating masses for other components. Some suggestions for overcoming this metric-mass problem are made.

Abstract

One‐parameter subgroups, the exponential mapping, and canonical coordinates have previously been defined for connected supergroups. In this paper, a technique for obtaining analytical expressions linking different coordinate schemes for supergroups is presented. These are the Baker–Campbell–Hausdorff relations. The method is illustrated in detail with the examples of supergroups based on the supersymmetric quantum‐mechanical superalgebra sqm (2) and on the Inonu–Wigner contraction isop(1/2) of the simple superalgebra osp(1/2).

Abstract

Certain systems of nonlinear partial differential equations can be written in a simple form as a single Grassmann‐valued partial differential equation. Equations describing compressible fluid flow are of this type. A method for finding soft solutions of the Grassmann‐valued partial differential equation arising in this context is presented. The method is a generalization of the Lagrangian‐coordinates approach to the case of Grassmann variables. Generally, solutions obtained by this method have the form of infinite series, whose expansion yields new relations among the unknown variables. In some simple cases, the series can be summed. The equivalence of the Grassmann solutions to the usual solutions is shown for these cases.

The one‐parameter subgroups of supergroups are defined and their primary properties are delineated. Parametrization schemes analogous to those used in Lie group theory are investigated. In particular, exponentiation is introduced and related to the one‐parameter subgroups. Canonical coordinates of three kinds are investigated, the third of which has no analog in conventional Lie theory. We illustrate our results with the examples of the supersymmetric quantum‐mechanical superalgebra sqm(2) and the simple superalgebra osp(1/2).

Abstract

Rules are provided for the calculation of string amplitudes on all exotic topologies to one loop. These topologies include the real projective plane, the disk, the annulus, the Mobius strip, the torus and the Klein bottle. The rules are valid for bosonic strings, superstrings, and heterotic strings either in their critical dimensions or toroidally compactified, and they are applicable to amplitudes with arbitrary external bosonic and fermionic states, including mixed open- and closed-string transitions. The modular invariance of the torus amplitudes is discussed.

We construct a cubic lattice of discrete points in superspace, as well as a discrete subgroup of the supersymmetry group which maps this ‘‘superlattice’’ into itself. We discuss the connection between this structure and previous versions of lattice supersymmetry. Our approach clarifies the mathematical problems of formulating supersymmetric lattice field theories and suggests new methods for attacking them.

Conformal field theory is applied in the context of the o(16)×o(16) heterotic string. Branch cuts and unphysical operators are seen to appear in the operator-product expansions for certain physical fields. A four-fermion amplitude is calculated explicitly and found, nonetheless, to have correct physical behaviour.

Calculational tools are provided allowing the determination of tree-level amplitudes for processes involving fermions and bosons in heterotic and superstring theories. A simple representation is given of the cocycle operators that are needed for bosonization of conformal operators, including spin fields and ghosts. This permits explicit computation of all correlation functions. The general m -boson, 2 n -fermion tree-level scattering amplitude in the open superstring is derived and a typical calculation of a four-point amplitude in the o(16) × o(16) heterotic string is presented in manifestly Lorentz-covariant form. An analysis of the branch-cut singularities in the o(16) × o(16) model is performed. In addition, the covariant form of the “new formalism” is developed. Particular attention is given to a lattice viewpoint of these results.

Abstract

We investigate the domain of validity of previously proposed analytical wave functions for atomic quantum-defect theory. This is done by considering the fine-structure splitting of alkali-metal and singly ionized alkaline-earth atoms. The Lande formula is found to be naturally incorporated. A supersymmetric-type integer is necessary for finite results. Calculated splittings correctly reproduce the principal features of experimental values for alkali-like atoms.

Abstract

We investigate gravitational phenomenology in compactified higher-dimensional theories, with particular emphasis on the consequences in string theory of tensor-induced spontaneous Lorentz-symmetry breaking. The role played by this mechanism in causing a gravitational version of the Higgs effect and in compactification is explored. The experimental viability of compactified theories with zero modes is considered by examining nonleading but observable gravitational effects. Additional constraints from the observed cosmological properties of the Universe are uncovered. Our investigations significantly constrain many theories involving extra dimensions in their perturbative regime. To resolve the phenomenological difficulties one must generate masses for the higher-dimensional components of the metric while leaving massless the physical spacetime components. Some possibilities for overcoming this metric-mass problem are suggested. An open issue is whether the metric-mass problem is resolved in string theory.

Abstract

A theoretical analysis is performed of Penning-trap experiments testing CPT and Lorentz symmetry through measurements of anomalous magnetic moments and charge-to-mass ratios. Possible CPT and Lorentz violations arising from spontaneous symmetry breaking at a fundamental level are treated in the context of a general extension of the SU(3) x SU(2) x U(1) standard model and its restriction to quantum electrodynamics. We describe signals that might appear in principle, introduce suitable figures of merit, and estimate CPT and Lorentz bounds attainable in present and future Penning-trap experiments. Experiments measuring anomaly frequencies are found to provide the sharpest tests of CPT symmetry. Bounds are attainable of approximately $10^{-20}$ in the electron-positron case and of $10^{-23}$ for a suggested experiment with protons and antiprotons. Searches for diurnal frequency variations in these experiments could also limit certain types of Lorentz violation to the level of $10^{-18}$ in the electron-positron system and others at the level of $10^{-21}$ in the proton-antiproton system. In contrast, measurements comparing cyclotron frequencies are sensitive within the present theoretical framework to different kinds of Lorentz violation that preserve CPT. Constraints could be obtained on one figure of merit in the electron-positron system at the level of $10^{-16}$, on another in the proton-antiproton system at $10^{-24}$, and on a third at $10^{-25}$ using comparisons of $H^-$ ions with antiprotons., 31 pages, published in Physical Review D

Abstract

The DUNE IDR describes the proposed physics program and technical designs of the DUNE Far Detector modules in preparation for the full TDR to be published in 2019. It is intended as an intermediate milestone on the path to a full TDR, justifying the technical choices that flow down from the high-level physics goals through requirements at all levels of the Project. These design choices will enable the DUNE experiment to make the ground-breaking discoveries that will help to answer fundamental physics questions. Volume 1 contains an executive summary that describes the general aims of this document. The remainder of this first volume provides a more detailed description of the DUNE physics program that drives the choice of detector technologies. It also includes concise outlines of two overarching systems that have not yet evolved to consortium structures: computing and calibration. Abstract

Violations of Lorentz invariance can lead to an energy-dependent vacuum dispersion of light, which results in arrival-time differences of photons with different energies arising from a given transient source. In this work, direction-dependent dispersion constraints are obtained on nonbirefringent Lorentz-violating effects using the observed spectral lags of the gamma-ray burst GRB 160625B. This burst has unusually large high-energy photon statistics, so we can obtain constraints from the true spectral time lags of bunches of high-energy photons rather than from the rough time lag of a single highest-energy photon. Also, GRB 160625B is the only burst to date having a well-defined transition from positive lags to negative lags, providing a unique opportunity to distinguish Lorentz-violating effects from any source-intrinsic time lag in the emission of photons of different energy bands. Our results place comparatively robust two-sided constraints on a variety of isotropic and anisotropic coefficients for Lorentz violation, including the first bounds on Lorentz-violating effects from operators of mass dimension 10 in the photon sector. Abstract

Abstract A framework is presented for the factorization of high-energy hadronic processes in the presence of Lorentz and CPT violation. The comprehensive effective field theory describing Lorentz and CPT violation, the Standard-Model Extension, is used to demonstrate factorization of the hadronic tensor at leading order in electroweak interactions for deep inelastic scattering and for the Drell-Yan process. Effects controlled by both minimal and nonminimal coefficients for Lorentz violation are explored, and the equivalent parton-model description is derived. The methodology is illustrated by determining cross sections and studying estimated attainable sensitivities to Lorentz violation using real data collected at the Hadronen-Elektronen Ring Anlage and the Large Hadron Collider and simulated data for the future US-based electron-ion collider.

Abstract

A general technique is presented for treating CPT violation in neutral-meson oscillations. The effective field theory for a complex scalar with CPT-violating operators of arbitrary mass dimension is incorporated in the formalism for the propagation and mixing of neutral mesons. Observable effects are discussed, and first measurements of CPT-violating operators of dimension five are extracted from existing experimental results.

Abstract

We propose a correspondence between the description of emergent Lorentz symmetry in condensed-matter systems and the established general effective field theory for Lorentz violation in fundamental theories of spacetime and matter. This correspondence has potential implications in both directions. We illustrate the proposal by investigating its consequences for the spectral and transport properties of Dirac and Weyl semimetals. Particular realizations of this framework give rise to Dirac nodal spectra with nodal lines and rings. We demonstrate a bulk-boundary correspondence between bulk topological invariants and drumhead surface states of these Dirac nodal semimetals. We calculate their transport coefficients in leading-order perturbation theory, thereby characterizing the unconventional electromagnetic response due to small deviations from emergent Lorentz invariance. Abstract

The effects of quark-sector Lorentz violation on deep inelastic electron–proton scattering are studied. We show that existing data can be used to establish first constraints on numerous coefficients for Lorentz violation in the quark sector at an estimated sensitivity of parts in a million.

137. Searching for photon-sector Lorentz violation using gravitational-wave detectors

Abstract

We study the prospects for using interferometers in gravitational-wave detectors as tools to search for photon-sector violations of Lorentz symmetry. Existing interferometers are shown to be exquisitely sensitive to tiny changes in the effective refractive index of light occurring at frequencies around and below the microhertz range, including at the harmonics of the frequencies of the Earth's sidereal rotation and annual revolution relevant for tests of Lorentz symmetry. We use preliminary data obtained by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) in 2006–2007 to place constraints on coefficients for Lorentz violation in the photon sector exceeding current limits by about four orders of magnitude.

138. Constraints on Lorentz violation from gravitational Čerenkov radiation

Abstract

Limits on gravitational Čerenkov radiation by cosmic rays are obtained and used to constrain coefficients for Lorentz violation in the gravity sector associated with operators of even mass dimensions, including orientation-dependent effects. We use existing data from cosmic-ray telescopes to obtain conservative two-sided constraints on 80 distinct Lorentz-violating operators of dimensions four, six, and eight, along with conservative one-sided constraints on three others. Existing limits on the nine minimal operators at dimension four are improved by factors of up to a billion, while 74 of our explicit limits represent stringent first constraints on nonminimal operators. Prospects are discussed for future analyses incorporating effects of Lorentz violation in the matter sector, the role of gravitational Čerenkov radiation by high-energy photons, data from gravitational-wave observatories, the tired-light effect, and electromagnetic Čerenkov radiation by gravitons.
