Abstract

Various ab initio computations, as, e.g., in G. J. Halász and Á. Vibók, Int. J. Quantum Chem. 111, 342 (2011), have shown that in molecules of the type (HCCH)+, when the extremal H atoms are distorted from a linear form but maintain a planar geometry, a pair of conical intersections (ci) occur at such positions that the ratios of the distortional coordinates of the two atoms are in the two ci's reciprocals of each other. These computations have here been extended to locate the ci's also for HCNH. The two groups of results are explained by simple analytic perturbational expressions for the energy differences of the lowest adjacent electronic states, with inclusion of excited state effects. Abstract

Fundamentally binary theories are nonsignaling theories in which measurements of many outcomes are constructed by selecting from binary measurements. They constitute a sensible alternative to quantum theory and have never been directly falsified by any experiment. Here we show that fundamentally binary theories are experimentally testable with current technology. For that, we identify a feasible Bell-type experiment on pairs of entangled qutrits. In addition, we prove that, for any n , quantum n -ary correlations are not fundamentally ( n − 1 ) -ary. For that, we introduce a family of inequalities that hold for fundamentally ( n − 1 ) -ary theories but are violated by quantum n -ary correlations.

Abstract

We investigate the problem of closing the detection loophole in multipartite Bell tests, and show that the required detection efficiencies can be significantly lowered compared to the bipartite case. In particular, we present Bell tests based on n-qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states, which can tolerate efficiencies as low as 38% for a reasonable number of parties and measurements. Even in the presence of a significant amount of noise, efficiencies below 50% can be tolerated, which is encouraging given recent experimental progress. Finally, we give strong evidence that, for a sufficiently large number of parties and measurements, arbitrarily small efficiencies can be tolerated, even in the presence of an arbitrary large amount of noise
