Abstract

Attosecond photoemission or photoionization delays are a unique probe of the structure and the electronic dynamics of matter. However, spectral congestion and spatial delocalization of valence electron wave functions set fundamental limits to the complexity of systems that can be studied and the information that can be retrieved, respectively. Using attosecond X-ray pulses from LCLS, we demonstrate the key advantages of measuring core-level delays: the photoelectron spectra remain atom-like, the measurements become element specific and the observed scattering dynamics originate from a point-like source. We exploit these unique features to reveal the effects of electronegativity and symmetry on attosecond scattering dynamics by measuring the photoionization delays between N-1s and C-1s core shells of a series of aromatic azabenzene molecules. Remarkably, the delays systematically increase with the number of nitrogen atoms in the molecule and reveal multiple resonances. We identify two previously unknown mechanisms regulating the associated attosecond dynamics, namely the enhanced confinement of the trapped wavefunction with increasing electronegativity of the atoms and the decrease of the coupling strength among the photoemitted partial waves with increasing symmetry. This study demonstrates the unique opportunities opened by measurements of core-level photoionization delays for unravelling attosecond electron dynamics in complex matter.

Abstract

We present GFlaT, a new algorithm that uses a graph-neural-network to determine the flavor of neutral $B$ mesons produced in $\Upsilon(4S)$ decays. It improves previous algorithms by using the information from all charged final-state particles and the relations between them. We evaluate its performance using $B$ decays to flavor-specific hadronic final states reconstructed in a 362 $\text{fb}^{-1}$ sample of electron-positron collisions collected at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider. We achieve an effective tagging efficiency of $(37.40 \pm 0.43 \pm 0.36) \%$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic, which is $18\%$ better than the previous Belle II algorithm. Demonstrating the algorithm, we use $B^{0}\to J/\psi K^0_\text{S}$ decays to measure the mixing-induced and direct $CP$ violation parameters, $S = (0.724 \pm 0.035 \pm 0.009)$ and $C = (-0.035 \pm 0.026 \pm 0.029)$., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

In this study, we explore the geometric construction of the Klein bottle and the real projective plane ($\mathrm{RP}^2$) within the framework of tensor networks, focusing on the implementation of crosscap and rainbow boundaries. Previous investigations have applied boundary matrix product state (BMPS) techniques to study these boundaries. We introduce a novel approach that incorporates such boundaries into the tensor renormalization group (TRG) methodology, facilitated by an efficient representation of a spatial reflection operator. This advancement enables us to compute the crosscap and rainbow free energy terms and the one-point function on $\mathrm{RP}^2$ with enhanced efficiency and for larger system sizes. Additionally, our method is capable of calculating the partition function under isotropic conditions of space and imaginary time. The versatility of this approach is further underscored by its applicability to constructing other (non-)orientable surfaces of higher genus.

Abstract

The world's languages exhibit certain so-called typological or implicational universals; for example, Subject-Object-Verb (SOV) languages typically use postpositions. Explaining the source of such biases is a key goal of linguistics. We study word-order universals through a computational simulation with language models (LMs). Our experiments show that typologically-typical word orders tend to have lower perplexity estimated by LMs with cognitively plausible biases: syntactic biases, specific parsing strategies, and memory limitations. This suggests that the interplay of cognitive biases and predictability (perplexity) can explain many aspects of word-order universals. Abstract

Herein, we present the statistical properties of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) for approximately 1 million member galaxies of galaxy groups and clusters, with 0.1 $<$ cluster redshift ($z_{\rm cl}$) $<$ 1.4, selected using Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam, the so-called CAMIRA clusters. In this research, we focused on the AGN power fraction ($f_{\rm AGN}$), which is defined as the proportion of the contribution of AGNs to the total infrared (IR) luminosity, $L_{\rm IR}$ (AGN)/$L_{\rm IR}$, and examined how $f_{\rm AGN}$ depends on (i) $z_{\rm cl}$ and (ii) the distance from the cluster center. We compiled multiwavelength data using the ultraviolet--mid-IR range. Moreover, we performed spectral energy distribution fits to determine $f_{\rm AGN}$ using the CIGALE code with the SKIRTOR AGN model. We found that (i) the value of $f_{\rm AGN}$ in the CAMIRA clusters is positively correlated with $z_{\rm cl}$, with the correlation slope being steeper than that for field galaxies, and (ii) $f_{\rm AGN}$ exhibits a high value at the cluster outskirts. These results indicate that the emergence of AGN population depends on the redshift and environment and that galaxy groups and clusters at high redshifts are important in AGN evolution. Additionally, we demonstrated that cluster--cluster mergers may enhance AGN activity at the outskirts of particularly massive galaxy clusters.
