One of the main topics in the experimental programme at the CELSIUS cooler/storage ring of the The Svedberg Laboratory, Uppsala is meson production in light ion collisions near threshold. The PROMICE/WASA collaboration is studying π0 and 2π production in pp collisions and ŋ production in pN collisions. Some of the reaction channels have been measured for the first time in any detail. The experimental method is reviewed and some results are presented, together with an outlook.
