Abstract

This paper is a summary of the work that our group has done (and recently published in several papers) on long-term radio variability of GPS sources. We have studied the long-term (up to 30 years) variability of GPS sources and candidates, with emphasis on the high-frequency radio domain. Our data sets show that only a relatively small number of these sources retain their convex spectra when they are monitored densely and for long periods of time. The current GPS samples are especially contaminated by small, beamed blazar-type sources. Also the remaining population with consistently convex GPS-type spectra seems to be heterogeneous, falling into several subpopulations when their observed properties are used for clustering them through a self-organizing map (© 2009 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Abstract

The effect of ZnO buffer layers prepared at different temperatures on the structural, optical and morphological properties of the ZnO main layer is reported. ZnO thin films (comprising a buffer and a main layer) were deposited on (0 0 0 1) c-sapphire substrates by PEMOCVD. Two-step growth regimes were applied to realize a homoepitaxial growth on ZnO buffers: low-temperature ZnO buffer layer deposited at Ts=300 °C and the main layer at Ts=500 °C, high-temperature ZnO buffer layer deposited at Ts=500 °C and the main layer at Ts=300 °C. For comparison, a sample grown at high-temperature Ts=500 °C by one-step procedure was used. The low-temperature buffer layer has shown the most beneficial effect on the structural and morphological properties, as expressed by the narrowing of the (0 0 2) diffraction peak (FWHM=0.07°) and crystallite size enlargement. However, the surface roughness of this sample is higher then that of the sample grown by one-step procedure and this needs further considerations. The photoluminescence results seem to support a conclusion that the application of a low-temperature buffer layer among the studied temperature regimes is the most advantageous. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

We present multiwavelength observations of a gamma-ray burst detected by INTEGRAL (GRB 030227) between 5.3 hours and similar to1.7 days after the event. Here we report the discovery of a dim optical afterglow (OA) that would not have been detected by many previous searches due to its faintess (R similar to 23). This OA was seen to decline following a power law decay with index alpha(R) = - 0.95 +/- 0.16. The spectral index beta(opt/NIR) yielded - 1.25 +/- 0.14. These values may be explained by a relativistic expansion of a fireball ( with p = 2.0) in the cooling regime. We also find evidence for inverse Compton scattering in X-rays.

Abstract

The paper presents results of calculating the RATAN-600 beam pattern (BP) and BP drift scans of point radio sources in the West Sector radio telescope operation mode at a frequency of 4.7 GHz. When calculating the BP, the properties of the radio telescope antenna system in this operation mode were taken into account: the use of a large secondary mirror, asymmetric radiation of the primary mirror, and the location of the primary feeds (feed horns) along the focal line of the secondary mirror. The shape of the calculated drift scans of sources through the BP is compared with that of the experimental drift scans of sources obtained from observations in the West Sector. The main characteristics of the drift scans are calculated and compared when the radio telescope operates with the West and North Sectors. A new method for determination of flux densities of sources passing through the BP outside its central cross-section is proposed, and its accuracy is estimated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

145. Absence of nonlocal resistance in microstructures of PbTe quantum wells.

Abstract

We report on experiments allowing to set an upper limit on the magnitude of the spin Hall effect and the conductance by edge channels in quantum wells of PbTe embedded between PbEuTe barriers. We reexamine previous data obtained for epitaxial microstructures of n-type PbSe and PbTe, in which pronounced nonlocal effects and reproducible magnetoresistance oscillations were found. Here we show that these effects are brought about by a quasi-periodic network of threading dislocations adjacent to the BaF2 substrate, which give rise to a p-type interfacial layer and an associated parasitic parallel conductance. We then present results of transport measurements on microstructures of modulation doped PbTe/(Pb,Eu)Te:Bi heterostructures for which the influence of parasitic parallel conductance is minimized, and for which quantum Hall transport had been observed, on similar samples, previously. These structures are of H-shaped geometry and they are patterned of 12 nm thick strained PbTe quantum wells embedded between Pb0.92Eu0.08Te barriers. The structures have different lateral sizes corresponding to both diffusive and ballistic electron transport in non-equivalent L valleys. For these structures no nonlocal resistance is detected confirming that PbTe is a trivial insulator. The magnitude of spin Hall angle γ is estimated to be smaller than 0.02 for PbTe/PbEuTe microstructures in the diffusive regime. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Context. Cygnus X-3 (Cyg X-3) is a well-known microquasar producing variable emission at all wavelengths. Cyg X-3 is a prominent X-ray binary producing relativistic jets, and studying its high energy emission is crucial for the understanding of the fundamental acceleration processes in accreting compact objects. Aims. Our goal is to study extreme particle acceleration and Υ-ray production above 100 MeV during special spectral states of Cyg X-3 usually characterized by a low hard X-ray flux and enhanced soft X-ray states. Methods. We observed Cyg X-3 with the AGILE satellite in extended time intervals from 2009 Jun.-Jul., and 2009 Nov.-2010 Jul. We report here the results of the AGILE Υ-ray monitoring of Cyg X-3 as well as the results from extensive multiwavelength campaigns involving radio (RATAN-600, AMI-LA and Metsähovi Radio Observatories) and X-ray monitoring data (XTE and Swift). Results. We detect a series of repeated Υ-ray flaring activity from Cyg X-3 that correlate with the soft X-ray states and episodes of decreasing or non-detectable hard X-ray emission. Furthermore, we detect Υ-ray enhanced emission that tends to be associated with radio flares greater than 1 Jy at 15 GHz, confirming a trend already detected in previous observations. The source remained active above 100 MeV for an extended period of time (almost 1.5 months in 2009 Jun.-Jul. and 1 month in 2010 May). We study in detail the short timescale Υ-ray flares that occurred before or near the radio peaks. Conclusions. Our results confirm the transient nature of the extreme particle acceleration from the microquasar Cyg X-3. A series of repeated Υ-ray flares shows correlations with radio and X-ray emission confirming a well established trend of emission. 148. MAGIC CONSTRAINTS ON ?-RAY EMISSION FROM CYGNUS X-3

Abstract

Cygnus X-3 is a microquasar consisting of an accreting compact object orbiting around a Wolf-Rayet star. It has been detected at radio frequencies and up to high-energy g rays (above 100 MeV). However, many models also predict a very high energy (VHE) emission (above hundreds of GeV) when the source displays relativistic persistent jets or transient ejections. Therefore, detecting such emission would improve the understanding of the jet physics. The imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope MAGIC observed Cygnus X-3 for about 70 hr between 2006 March and 2009 August in different X-ray/radio spectral states and also during a period of enhanced g-ray emission. MAGIC found no evidence for a VHE signal from the direction of the microquasar. An upper limit to the integral flux for energies higher than 250 GeV has been set to 2.2 x 10-12 photons cm-2 s-1 (95% confidence level). This is the best limit so far to the VHE emission from this source. The non-detection of a VHE signal during the period of activity in the high-energy band sheds light on the location of the possible VHE radiation favoring the emission from the innermost region of the jets, where absorption is significant. The current and future generations of Cherenkov telescopes may detect a signal under precise spectral conditions.

Abstract

This paper is a summary of the work that our group has done and recently published in several papers on longterm radio variability of GPS sources. We have studied the longterm up to 30 years variability of GPS sources and candidates, with emphasis on the highfrequency radio domain. Our data sets show that only a relatively small number of these sources retain their convex spectra when they are monitored densely and for long periods of time. The current GPS samples are especially contaminated by small, beamed blazartype sources. Also the remaining population with consistently convex GPStype spectra seems to be heterogeneous, falling into several subpopulations when their observed properties are used for clustering them through a selforganizing map © 2009 WILEYVCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
