Introduction: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disorder affecting the elderly population worldwide. Due to the multifactorial nature of the disease, involving impairment of cholinergic neurotransmission and immune system, previous attempts to find effective treatments have faced challenges.Methods: In such scenario, we attempted to investigate the effects of alpha-glyceryl-phosphoryl-choline (α-GPC), a cholinomimetic molecule, on neuroinflammation and memory outcome in the triple transgenic mouse model of AD (3xTg-AD). Mice were enrolled at 4 months of age, treated orally with α-GPC dissolved in drinking water at a concentration resulting in an average daily dose of 100 mg/kg for 8 months and sacrificed at 12 months of age. Thereafter, inflammatory markers, as well as cognitive parameters, were measured.Results: Chronic α-GPC treatment reduced accumulation of amyloid deposits and led to a substantial re-balance of the inflammatory response of resident innate immune cells, astrocytes and microglia. Specifically, fluorescent immunohistochemistry and Western blot analysis showed that α-GPC contributed to reduction of cortical and hippocampal reactive astrocytes and pro-inflammatory microglia, concurrently increasing the expression of anti-inflammatory molecules. Whereas α-GPC beneficially affect the synaptic marker synaptophysin in the hippocampus. Furthermore, we observed that α-GPC was effective in restoring cognitive dysfunction, as measured by the Novel Object Recognition test, wherein 3xTg-AD mice treated with α-GPC significantly spent more time exploring the novel object compared to 3xTg-AD untreated mice.Discussion: In conclusion, chronic treatment with α-GPC exhibited a significant anti-inflammatory activity and sustained the key function of hippocampal synapses, crucial for the maintenance of a regular cognitive status. In light of our results, we suggest that α-GPC could be exploited as a promising therapeutic approach in early phases of AD.

Conclusions: In primary ductal adenocarcinoma of the lacrimal gland, early diagnosis and multimodal treatments could be crucial, considering its often aggressive tendency. Considering the lack of treatment guidelines, case report recording can be useful in patient management.

Abstract Objective: Determine the impact of limited implementation of a rapid blood culture identification (BCID) panel. Design: Retrospective cohort study. Methods: From February to April 2022, positive blood cultures identified via e-Plex BCID (Roche, Carlsbad, CA) were compared to those identified using standard microbial identification techniques. The primary outcomes assessed were time to optimal therapy, time to de-escalation of anti-MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) agents, and time to de-escalation of anti-pseudomonal agents. Additional analysis investigated the impact of the availability of antimicrobial stewardship program support. This study was conducted at Grady Health System, a large metropolitan safety-net hospital in the southeastern United States. Results: A total of 253 blood cultures were included in this study (153 BCID and 100 standard). Blood culture identification use was associated with a reduction in median time to optimal antimicrobial therapy (43.4 vs 72.1 h, P < .001) and median time to de-escalation of anti-MRSA agents (27.7 vs 46.7 h, P = .006), and a trend towards reduction of median time to de-escalation of anti-pseudomonal agents (38.8 vs 54.8 h, P = .07). These reductions persisted when controlling for patient age, sex, intensive care unit status, Charlson Comorbidity Index, and antimicrobial stewardship program availability. Conclusions: Despite restricted use and lack of 24/7 antimicrobial stewardship program availability, BCID panel utilization was associated with earlier initiation of optimal therapy and pathogen identification with subsequent de-escalation of broad-spectrum antimicrobials, as compared to standard antimicrobial techniques. This suggests the potential for benefit from adopting novel diagnostic technologies outside of idealized fully-resourced settings.

Student-facing learning analytics (SFLA) hold promise for supporting the development of self-regulated learning (SRL) skills students need for academic success, especially in online learning. However, the promise of SFLA for supporting SRL is unrealized because current SFLA design methods are technocentric, with little attention to learning science theory and student needs, and there is little guidance for SFLA designers. Based on insights from literature and a survey with learning analytics (LA) experts, we have developed a framework to guide the design of SFLA. The framework is built around three questions that designers should address to generate SFLA features for supporting SRL: "What are the students' self-regulated learning support needs based on self-regulated learning theory?" "What are the students' perspectives of SFLA in meeting their SRL needs?" "What SFLA features are appropriate to support students' self-regulated learning based on their SRL needs?" A set of activities that should be conducted to respond to each question is identified within the framework. To evaluate the framework, a focus group discussion with LA experts was conducted, and feedback obtained was used to revise the framework. The framework provides a rationale for understanding student needs as informed by theory.

Proton boron capture therapy (PBCT) in a preclinical glioblastoma model exhibits increased therapeutic effectiveness with an increased cell death and mitophagy, supporting its use as a scalable strategy to treat glioblastoma.

A Pulsed ns laser operating at 532 nm wavelength with 150 mJ pulse energy was employed to irradiate micrometric thick mylar films, from 1 to 100 μm thick, covered by 0.05 μm Au in the back face. Protons and light ions have been accelerated by the electric field developed in the non‐equilibrium plasma by the laser pulse in a vacuum at an intensity of the order of 1010 W/cm2. Time‐of‐flight technique, obtained using a Faraday cup and a fast storage oscilloscope, is employed to measure the ion velocity, energy, and yield emitted in backward and forward directions. The yield of the emitted plasma photons is also evaluated. Two ion collectors are used in opposite directions to measure the plasma radiations emitted in backward and forward directions. Data analysis is based on the Coulomb‐Boltzmann‐shifted (CBS) distribution function. The target ablation yield is evaluated in the order of 3.5 μm per laser shot. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Design is a quality of the material world and refers to the production of objects and the processes used to make them. In the physical world, design refers to form and function. In the digital world, the construct of design embodies meaning making. Immersed in a digital world, the ability of individuals to fully participate in contemporary society is significantly impacted by their ability to derive meaning from their interactions with multi-modal digital texts. Understanding, using, and producing knowledge in the digital world requires literacy competencies beyond those needed for the traditional reading and writing. 'Design' is therefore an essential literacy for the 21st century. In the present article, the authors trace the evolution of the concept of design literacy, frame design literacy as a human-centred literacy, and argue for the imperative of the inclusion of design literacy in higher education.

In the last few decades, lifelong learning has gained favour as an educational paradigm. Inevitably, embedded in social, cultural, and economic contexts, the conceptualization and implementation of lifelong learning across the globe is far from homogenous. In China, although the notion of lifelong learning can be traced to Confucius, the term was introduced more formally in the late 1970s after the Cultural Revolution. In the present article, the authors engage in a critically reflective discussion of the lifelong learning in China. The authors offer historical and future perspectives on lifelong learning and how it is enacted in relation to labor distribution, skills, training, and future needs.

Background: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a prevalent sleep disorder characterized by repeated episodes of partial or complete obstruction of the upper airway during sleep. While the systemic implications of OSA are well documented, the dental consequences are less frequently discussed yet equally significant. This review aims to elucidate the oral health impacts of OSA, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary care. Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted across several databases to identify studies examining the relationship between OSA and various oral health parameters. The review included observational studies, clinical trials, and systematic reviews published in English up to January 2024. Results: OSA was significantly associated with heightened risks of bruxism, dry mouth, periodontal disease, temporomandibular joint disorders, palatal and dental changes, and alterations in taste sensation. Mouth breathing associated with OSA was a critical factor in exacerbating xerostomia and dental caries. Furthermore, the systemic inflammation induced by OSA appeared to correlate with the severity of periodontal disease. Patients using oral appliance therapy for OSA also showed notable changes in dental occlusion and required ongoing dental monitoring. Conclusions: The findings underscore the bidirectional relationship between OSA and oral health, highlighting the need for dental professionals to be integral participants in the management of OSA. Early dental evaluation and intervention can contribute to the overall health and quality of life of individuals with OSA. The review advocates for the development of clinical guidelines to facilitate the early identification and management of OSA-related oral health issues within dental practice and encourages a collaborative approach to patient care.

PANDORA (Plasmas for Astrophysics Nuclear Decays Observation and Radiation for Archaeometry) is an INFN project aiming at measuring, for the first time, possible variations in in-plasma β-decay lifetimes in isotopes of astrophysical interest as a function of thermodynamical conditions of the in-laboratory controlled plasma environment. Theoretical predictions indicate that the ionization state can dramatically modify the β-decay lifetime (even of several orders of magnitude). The PANDORA experimental approach consists of confining a plasma able to mimic specific stellar-like conditions and measuring the nuclear decay lifetime as a function of plasma parameters. The β-decay events will be measured by detecting the γ-ray emitted by the daughter nuclei, using an array of 12 HPGe detectors placed around the magnetic trap. In this frame, plasma parameters have to be continuously monitored online. For this purpose, an innovative, non-invasive multi-diagnostic system, including high-resolution time- and space-resolved X-ray analysis, was developed, which will work synergically with the γ-rays detection system. In this contribution, we will describe this multi-diagnostics system with a focus on spatially resolved high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy. The latter is performed by a pin-hole X-ray camera setup operating in the 0.5–20 keV energy domain. The achieved spatial and energy resolutions are 450 µm and 230 eV at 8.1 keV, respectively. An analysis algorithm was specifically developed to obtain SPhC (Single Photon-Counted) images and local plasma emission spectrum in High-Dynamic-Range (HDR) mode. Thus, investigations of image regions where the emissivity can change by even orders of magnitude are now possible. Post-processing analysis is also able to remove readout noise, which is often observable and dominant at very low exposure times (ms). Several measurements have already been used in compact magnetic plasma traps, e.g., the ATOMKI ECRIS in Debrecen and the Flexible Plasma Trap at LNS. The main outcomes will be shortly presented. The collected data allowed for a quantitative and absolute evaluation of local emissivity, the elemental analysis, and the local evaluation of plasma density and temperature. This paper also discusses the new plasma emission models, implemented on PIC-ParticleInCell codes, which were developed to obtain powerful 3D maps of the X-rays emitted by the magnetically confined plasma. These data also support the evaluation procedure of spatially resolved plasma parameters from the experimental spectra as well as, in the near future, the development of appropriate algorithms for the tomographic reconstruction of plasma parameters in the X-ray domain. The described setups also include the most recent upgrade, consisting of the use of fast X-ray shutters with special triggering systems that will be routinely implemented to perform both space- and time-resolved spectroscopy during transient, stable, and turbulent plasma regimes (in the ms timescale).

Different factors, not limited to the lung, influence the progression of ILDs. A “treatable trait” strategy was recently proposed for ILD patients as a precision model of care to improve outcomes. However, no data have been published so far on the prevalence of TTs in ILD. A prospective, observational, cohort study was conducted within the ILD Program at the IRCCS Humanitas Research Hospital (Milan, Italy) between November 2021 and November 2023. TTs were selected according to recent literature and assigned during multidisciplinary discussion (MDD) to one of the following categories: pulmonary, etiological, comorbidities, and lifestyle. Patients were further divided into four groups according to their post-MDD diagnosis: idiopathic ILD, sarcoidosis, connective tissue disease–ILD, and other ILD. The primary study outcome was the prevalence of each TT in the study population. A total of 116 patients with ILD [63.9% male; median (IQR) age: 69 (54–78) years] were included in the study. All the TTs identified in the literature were found in our cohort, except for intractable chronic cough. We also recognized differences in TTs across the ILD groups, with less TTs in patients with sarcoidosis. This analysis provides the first ancillary characterization of TTs in ILD patients in a real setting to date.

The aim of the study was to assess sexual health in women who underwent Loop Electrosurgical Excisional Procedure (LEEP) for the treatment of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia 3 (CIN 3). One hundred thirty-one women were enrolled, and the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) questionnaire was administered before LEEP and 6 months after the procedure. In almost all of the participants, data revealed a statistically significant worsening in sexual quality of life after LEEP. Therefore, clinicians should be aware of these possible negative effects on sexual behavior, and provide women with appropriate, wide-ranging, and detailed counseling. The data obtained in the present study should help to plan appropriate counseling from communicating HPV diagnosis and medical treatment to CIN3 surgical procedure.
