We generalize the hierarchy construction to generic 2+1D topological orders (which can be non-Abelian) by condensing Abelian anyons in one topological order to construct a new one. We show that such construction is reversible and leads to a new equivalence relation between topological orders. We refer to the corresponding equivalent class (the orbit of the hierarchy construction) as "the non-Abelian family". Each non-Abelian family has one or a few root topological orders with the smallest number of anyon types. All the Abelian topological orders belong to the trivial non-Abelian family whose root is the trivial topological order. We show that Abelian anyons in root topological orders must be bosons or fermions with trivial mutual statistics between them. The classification of topological orders is then greatly simplified, by focusing on the roots of each family: those roots are given by non-Abelian modular extensions of representation categories of Abelian groups., 4+20 pages with a series of tables, comments welcome

The authors examine the phenomenon of ``Cheshire charge'' in topological phases of matter in three spatial dimensions. A looplike excitation is said to carry Cheshire charge if the charge is not locally detectable, that is, it can only be observed by a nonlocal process such as shrinking the loop to a point. The authors show that ``Cheshire charge'' is a generic feature of three-dimensional topological phases. They relate it to other features of these phases, such as three-loop braiding, as well as to higher-category theory that is hypothesized to be the general mathematical framework describing three-dimensional topological phases.

The periodically driven quantum Ising chain has recently attracted a large attention in the context of Floquet engineering. In addition to the common paramagnet and ferromagnet, this driven model can give rise to new topological phases. In this work we systematically explore its quantum phase diagram, by examining the properties of its Floquet ground state. We specifically focus on driving protocols with time-reversal invariant points, and demonstrate the existence of an infinite number of distinct phases. These phases are separated by second-order quantum phase transitions, accompanied by continuous changes of local and string order parameters, as well as sudden changes of a topological winding number and of the number of protected edge states. When one of these phase transitions is adiabatically crossed, the correlator associated to the order parameter is nonvanishing over a length scale which shows a Kibble-Zurek scaling. In some phases, the Floquet ground state spontaneously breaks the discrete time-translation symmetry of the Hamiltonian. In this work, we construct a generalized Kane model with a new coupling term between itinerant electron spins and local magnetic moments of anti-ferromagnetic ordering in order to describe the low energy effective physics in a large family of anti-ferromagnetic half-Heusler materials. Topological properties of this generalized Kane model is studied and a large variety of topological phases, including Dirac semimetal phase, Weyl semimetal phase, nodal line semimetal phase, type-B triple point semimetal phase, topological mirror (or glide) insulating phase and anti-ferromagnetic topological insulating phase, are identified in different parameter regions of our effective models. In particular, we find that the system is always driven into the anti-ferromagnetic topological insulator phase once a bulk band gap is open, irrespective of the magnetic moment direction, thus providing a robust realization of anti-ferromagentic topological insulators. Furthermore, we discuss the possible realization of these topological phases in realistic anti-ferromagnetic half-Heusler materials. We formulate topological crystalline materials on the basis of the twisted equivariant $K$-theory. Basic ideas of the twisted equivariant $K$-theory is explained with application to topological phases protected by crystalline symmetries in mind, and systematic methods of topological classification for crystalline materials are presented. Our formulation is applicable to bulk gapful topological crystalline insulators/superconductors and their gapless boundary and defect states, as well as bulk gapless topological materials such as Weyl and Dirac semimetals, and nodal superconductors. As an application of our formulation, we present a complete classification of topological crystalline surface states, in the absence of time-reversal invariance. The classification works for gapless surface states of three-dimensional insulators, as well as full gapped two-dimensional insulators. Such surface states and two-dimensional insulators are classified in a unified way by 17 wallpaper groups, together with the presence or the absence of (sublattice) chiral symmetry. We identify the topological numbers and their representations under the wallpaper group operation. We also exemplify the usefulness of our formulation in the classification of bulk gapless phases. We present a new class of Weyl semimetals and Weyl superconductors that are topologically protected by inversion symmetry., 72 pages

We calculate the holographic entanglement entropy for the holographic QCD phase diagram considered in [Knaute, Yaresko, K\"ampfer (2017), arXiv:1702.06731] and explore the resulting qualitative behavior over the temperature-chemical potential plane. In agreement with the thermodynamic result, the phase diagram exhibits the same critical point as the onset of a first-order phase transition curve. We compare the phase diagram of the entanglement entropy to that of the thermodynamic entropy density and find a striking agreement in the vicinity of the critical point. Thus, the holographic entanglement entropy qualifies to characterize different phase structures. The main purpose of the present article is to report the characteristics of von Neumann entropy, thereby, the electronic hybrid entanglement, in the heterojunction of two semiconductors, with due attention to the Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions. To this end, we cast the von Neumann entropy in terms of spin polarization and compute its time evolution; with a vast span of applications. It is assumed that gate potentials are applied to the heterojunction, providing a two dimensional parabolic confining potential (forming an isotropic nanodot at the junction), as well as means of controlling the spin-orbit couplings. The spin degeneracy is also removed, even at electronic zero momentum, by the presence of an external magnetic field which, in turn, leads to the appearance of Landau states. We then proceed by computing the time evolution of the corresponding von Neumann entropy from a separable (spin-polarized) initial state. The von Neumann entropy, as we show, indicates that electronic hybrid entanglement does occur between spin and two-dimensional Landau levels. Our results also show that von Neumann entropy, as well as the degree of spin-orbit entanglement, periodically collapses and revives. The characteristics of such behavior; period, amplitude, etc., are shown to be determined from the controllable external agents. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the phenomenon of collapse-revivals’ in the behavior of von Neumann entropy, equivalently, electronic hybrid entanglement, is accompanied by plateaus (of great importance in quantum computation schemes) whose durations are, again, controlled by the external elements. Along these lines, we also make a comparison between effects of the two spin-orbit couplings on the entanglement (von Neumann entropy) characteristics. The finer details of the electronic hybrid entanglement, which may be easily verified through spin polarization measurements, are also accreted and discussed. The novel results of the present article, with potent applications in the field of quantum information processing, provide a deeper understanding of the electronic von Neumann entropy and hybrid entanglement that occurs in two-dimensional nanodots.

We study Floquet topological phases in periodically driven systems that are protected by "time glide symmetry", a combination of reflection and half time period translation. Time glide symmetry is an analog of glide symmetry with partial time translation replacing the partial space translation, and hence, is an intrinsically dynamical symmetry which may be engineered in periodically driven systems by exploiting the controllability of driving. We present lattice models of time glide symmetric Floquet topological insulators in two and three dimensions. The topological numbers characterizing those Floquet topological phases are derived from the half period time evolution operator along with time glide operator. Moreover, we classify Floquet topological phases protected by time glide symmetry in general dimensions using a Clifford algebra approach. The obtained classification table is similar to that for topological crystalline insulators protected by static reflection symmetry, but shows nontrivial entries in different combination of symmetries, which clarifies that time glide symmetric Floquet topological phases are a distinct set of topological phases from topological crystalline insulators. We also classify Floquet topological phases with "time screw symmetry," defined as a two-fold spatial rotation accompanied by half-period time translation., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

Utilizing the holographic technique, we investigate how the entanglement entropy evolves along the renormalization group flow. After introducing a new generalized temperature which satisfies the thermodynamicslike law even in the IR regime, we find that the renormalized entropy and the generalized temperature in the IR limit approach the thermal entropy and thermodynamic temperature of a real thermal system. This result implies that the microscopic quantum entanglement entropy in the IR region leads to the thermodynamic relation up to small quantum corrections caused by the quantum entanglement near the entangling surface. Intriguingly, this IR feature of the entanglement entropy universally happens regardless of the detail of the dual field theory and the shape of the entangling surface. We check this IR universality with a most general geometry called the hyperscaling violation geometry which is dual to a relativistic nonconformal field theory.

We consider a conformal field theory in two dimensions in which an external perturbation is placed. We study the energy flux and entanglement entropy for one, two and multiple intervals and give a suggestion relating the two in some cases. We show that both the energy flux and the entanglement entropy exhibit a light-cone singularity which strongly depends on the regularization we choose., 19 pages, 4 figures

An attempt is made to understand the topological quantum phase transition, emergence of relativistic modes and local topological order of light in a strongly interacting light-matter system. We study this system, in a one dimensional array of nonlinear cavities. Topological quantum phase transition occurs with massless excitation only for the finite detuning process. We present a few results based on the exact analytical calculations along with the physical explanations. We observe the emergence of massive Majorana fermion mode at the topological state, massless Majorana-Weyl fermion mode during the topological quantum phase transition and Dirac fermion mode for the non-topological state. Finally, we study the quantized Berry phase (topological order) and its connection to the topological number (winding number).

Topological phases of matter are one of the hallmarks of quantum condensed matter physics. One of their striking features is a bulk-boundary correspondence wherein the topological nature of the bulk manifests itself on boundaries via exotic massless phases. In classical wave phenomena analogous effects may arise; however, these cannot be viewed as equilibrium phases of matter. Here we identify a set of rules under which robust equilibrium classical topological phenomena exist. We write down simple and analytically tractable classical lattice models of spins and rotors in two and three dimensions which, at suitable parameter ranges, are paramagnetic in the bulk but nonetheless exhibit some unusual long-range or critical order on their boundaries. We point out the role of simplicial cohomology as a means of classifying, writing-down, and analyzing such models. We study an exotic state which is localized only at an intersection of edges of a topological material. This ``edge-of-edge'' state is shown to exist generically. We construct explicitly generic edge-of-edge states in five-dimensional Weyl semimetals and their dimensional reductions, such as four-dimensional topological insulators of class A and three-dimensional chiral topological insulators of class AIII. The existence of the edge-of-edge state is due to a topological charge of the edge states. The notion of the Berry connection is generalized to include the space of all possible boundary conditions, where Chern-Simons forms are shown to be nontrivial.

We propose an exactly solvable Hamiltonian for topological phases in 3 + 1 dimensions utilizing ideas from higher lattice gauge theory, where the gauge symmetry is given by a finite 2-group. We explicitly show that the model is a Hamiltonian realization of Yetter's homotopy 2-type topological quantum field theory whereby the ground-state projector of the model defined on the manifold M 3 is given by the partition function of the underlying topological quantum field theory for M 3 × [ 0 , 1 ] . We show that this result holds in any dimension and illustrate it by computing the ground state degeneracy for a selection of spatial manifolds and 2-groups. As an application we show that a subset of our model is dual to a class of Abelian Walker-Wang models describing 3 + 1 dimensional topological insulators.

In this paper, we consider a class of constrained systems named double upper bounds $(p,q)$-constrained systems ($(p,q)$-DUB systems in brief), which are one-dimensional subshifts of finite type. We determinate the topological entropies (Shannon capacities) $C(p,q)$ of all $(p,q)$-DUB systems and consequently order all $(p,q)$-DUB systems according to the size of topological entropies. In particular, $C(p, \infty)=C(p+1, p+1)$ are the only equalities possible among the topological entropies of $(p,q)$-DUB systems.

In this work we demonstrate that linearized gravity exhibits gapless topological order with an extensive ground state degeneracy. This phenomenon is closely related both to the topological order of the pyrochlore U(1) spin liquid and to recent work by Hawking et. al. who used the soft photon and graviton theorems to demonstrate that the vacuum in linearized gravity is not unique. We first consider lattice models whose low-energy behavior are described by electromagnetism and linearized gravity, and then argue that the topological nature of these models carries over into the continuum. We demonstrate that these models can have many ground states without making assumptions about the topology of spacetime or about the high-energy nature of the theory, and show that the infinite family of symmetries described by Hawking et. al. are simply the difierent topological sectors. We argue that in this context black holes appear as topological defects in the IR theory, and that this suggests a potential approach to understanding both the firewall paradox and information encoding in gravitational theories. We introduce a new measure of instability of area-preserving twist diffeomorphisms, which generalizes the notions of angle of splitting of separatrices, and flux through a gap of a Cantori. As an example of application, we establish a sharp >0 lower bound on the topological entropy in a neighbourhood of a hyperbolic, unique action-minimizing fixed point, assuming only no topological obstruction to diffusion, i.e. no homotopically non-trivial invariant circle consisting of orbits with the rotation number 0. The proof is based on a new method of precise construction of positive entropy invariant measures, applicable to more general Lagrangian systems, also in higher degrees of freedom.

Numerous experiments have reported discrete symmetry breaking in the high temperature pseudogap phase of the hole-doped cuprates, including breaking of one or more of lattice rotation, inversion, or time-reversal symmetries. In the absence of translational symmetry breaking or topological order, these conventional order parameters cannot explain the gap in the charged fermion excitation spectrum in the anti-nodal region. Zhao et al. (1601.01688) and Jeong et al. (arXiv:1701.06485) have also reported inversion and time-reversal symmetry breaking in insulating Sr2IrO4 similar to that in the metallic cuprates, but co-existing with Neel order. We extend an earlier theory of topological order in insulators and metals, in which the topological order combines naturally with the breaking of these conventional discrete symmetries. We find translationally-invariant states with topological order co-existing with both Ising-nematic order and spontaneous charge currents. The link between the discrete broken symmetries and the topological-order-induced pseudogap explains why the broken symmetries do not survive in the confining phases without a pseudogap at large doping. Our theory also connects to the O(3) non-linear sigma model and CP1 descriptions of quantum fluctuations of the Neel order. We study a model of two dimensional, topological superconductivity on a square lattice. The model contains hopping, spin orbit coupling and a time reversal symmetry breaking Zeeman term. This term, together with the chemical potential act as knobs that induce transitions between trivial and topological superconductivity. As previously found numerically, the transitions are seen in the entanglement entropy as cusps as a function of model parameters. In this work we study the entanglement entropy analytically by keeping only its most important components. Our study is based on the intuition that the number of Fermi surfaces in the system controls the topological invariant. With our approximate expression for the entanglement entropy we are able to extract the divergent entanglement entropy derivative close to the phase transition.

Emerged as the quantum counterpart of classical random walks, quantum walks are established precious resources in a variety of quantum sciences. Recent studies have shown that quantum walks may be characterized by topological invariants, in close analogy to condensed matter systems exhibiting topological order. Exploiting these features, quantum walks are currently used to simulate topological systems and to probe their exotic features. Here we present the implementation of a one-dimensional quantum walk protocol based on the orbital angular momentum of light, manifesting the topological phases that characterize time-periodic systems (Floquet topological insulators) showing chiral symmetry. By considering the orbital angular momentum spectrum of a light beam undergoing this quantum evolution, we show that the associated statistical moments have marked differences in distinct phases and contain information on the system topology. While varying a control parameter determining the value of the invariants, these moments in the large step-number limit exhibit a sharp variation at the phase changes. We show that these phenomena arise from the singular behavior of the dispersion relation at the transition points. The extension of our results to systems featuring different symmetries, or characterized by higher spatial dimensions, may unveil novel intriguing features associated with these complex systems.

Fractionalization is a ubiquitous phenomenon in topological states of matter. In this work, we study the collective behavior of fractionalized topological charges and their instabilities, through the $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_3$ Ising model on a kagome lattice, which can be mapped to a model of interacting topological charges under the constraint of Gauss' law. We find that the recombination of topological charges gives rise to a yet unexplored classical spin liquid. This spin liquid is characterized by an extensive residual entropy, as well as the formation of hexamers of same-sign topological charges. The emergence of hexamers is reflected to a half-moon signal in the magnetic structure factor, which provides us a signature of this new spin liquid in neutron-scattering experiments. Chirality is ubiquitous in nature and chiral objects in condensed matter are often excited states protected by system's topology. The use of chiral topological excitations to carry information has been demonstrated, where the information is robust against external perturbations. For instance, reading, writing, and transfer of binary information are demonstrated with chiral topological excitations in magnetic systems, skyrmions, for spintronic devices. However, the next step, the logic or algebraic operation of such topological bits has not been realized yet. Here, we show experimentally the switching between solitons of different chirality in a one-dimensional electronic system with $Z_4$ topological symmetry. We found that a fast-moving achiral soliton merges with chiral solitons to switch their handedness. This corresponds to the realization of algebraic operation of $Z_4$ topological numbers. Topological order has become a new paradigm to distinguish ground states of interacting many-body systems without conventional long-range order. Here, we discuss possible extensions of this concept to density matrices describing statistical ensembles. For a large class of quasithermal states, which can be realized as thermal states of some quasilocal Hamiltonian, we generalize earlier definitions of density-matrix topology to generic many-body systems with strong correlations. We point out that the robustness of topological order, defined as a pattern of long-range entanglement, depends crucially on the perturbations under consideration. While it is intrinsically protected against local perturbations of arbitrary strength in an infinite closed quantum system, purely local perturbations can destroy topological order in open systems coupled to baths if the coupling is sufficiently strong. We discuss our classification scheme using the finite-temperature quantum Hall states and point out that the classical Hall effect can be understood as a finite-temperature topological phase.

We consider scaling of the entanglement entropy across a topological quantum phase transition for the Kitaev chain model. The change of the topology manifests itself in a subleading term, which scales as ${L}^{\ensuremath{-}1/\ensuremath{\alpha}}$ with the size of the subsystem $L$, here $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ is the R\'enyi index. This term reveals the scaling function ${h}_{\ensuremath{\alpha}}(L/\ensuremath{\xi})$, where $\ensuremath{\xi}$ is the correlation length, which is sensitive to the topological index. The scaling function ${h}_{\ensuremath{\alpha}}(L/\ensuremath{\xi})$ is independent of model parameters, suggesting some degree of its universality.

We study a one-dimensional topological superconductor, the Kitaev chain, under the influence of a non-Hermitian but $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric potential. This potential introduces gain and loss in the system in equal parts. We show that the stability of the topological phase is influenced by the gain/loss strength and explicitly derive the bulk topological invariant in a bipartite lattice as well as compute the corresponding phase diagram using analytical and numerical methods. Furthermore we find that the edge state is exponentially localized near the ends of the wire despite the presence of gain and loss of probability amplitude in that region., 10 pages, 9 figures

Topological matter is a popular topic in both condensed matter and cold atom research. In the past decades, a variety of models have been identified with fascinating topological features. Some, but not all, of the models can be found in materials. As a fully controllable system, cold atoms trapped in optical lattices provide an ideal platform to simulate and realize these topological models. Here we present a proposal for synthesizing topological models in cold atoms based on a one-dimensional (1D) spin-dependent optical lattice potential. In our system, features such as staggered tunneling, staggered Zeeman field, nearest-neighbor interaction, beyond-near-neighbor tunneling, etc. can be readily realized. They underlie the emergence of various topological phases. Our proposal can be realized with current technology and hence has potential applications in quantum simulation of topological matter., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

In this work, we develop a coupled layer construction of fracton topological orders in $d=3$ spatial dimensions. These topological phases have sub-extensive topological ground-state degeneracy and possess excitations whose movement is restricted in interesting ways. Our coupled layer approach is used to construct several different fracton topological phases, both from stacked layers of simple $d=2$ topological phases and from stacks of $d=3$ fracton topological phases. This perspective allows us to shed light on the physics of the X-cube model recently introduced by Vijay, Haah, and Fu, which we demonstrate can be obtained as the strong-coupling limit of a coupled three-dimensional stack of toric codes. We also construct two new models of fracton topological order: a semionic generalization of the X-cube model, and a model obtained by coupling together four interpenetrating X-cube models, which we dub the "Four Color Cube model." The couplings considered lead to fracton topological orders via mechanisms we dub "p-string condensation" and "p-membrane condensation," in which strings or membranes built from particle excitations are driven to condense. This allows the fusion properties, braiding statistics, and ground-state degeneracy of the phases we construct to be easily studied in terms of more familiar degrees of freedom. One dimensional topological insulators are characterized by edge states with exponentially small energies. According to one generalization of topological phases to non-Hermitian systems, a finite system in a non-trivial topological phase displays surface states with exponentially long life times. In this work we explore the possibility of exploiting such non-Hermitian topological phases to enhance the quantum coherence of a fiducial qubit embedded in a dissipative environment. We first show that a network of qubits interacting with lossy cavities can be represented, in a suitable super-one-particle sector, by a non-Hermitian "Hamiltonian" of the desired form. We then study, both analytically and numerically, one-dimensional geometries with up to three sites per unit cell, and up to a topological winding number $W=2$. For finite-size systems the number of edge modes is a complicated function of $W$ and the system size $N$. However we find that there are precisely $W$ modes localized at one end of the chain. In such topological phases the quibt's coherence lifetime is exponentially large in the system size. We verify that, for $W>1$, at large times, the Lindbladian evolution is approximately a non-trivial unitary. For $W=2$ this results in Rabi-like oscillations of the qubit's coherence measure., 10 pages, 10 figures

The relationship of topological insulators and superconductors and the field of nonlinear dynamics is widely unexplored. To address this subject, we adopt the linear coupling geometry of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, a paradigmatic example for a topological insulator, and render it nonlinearly in the context of superconducting circuits. It was recently shown that an interacting Kitaev topological superconductor model is exactly solvable based on two-step Jordan-Wigner transformations together with one spin rotation. We generalize this model by including the dimerization, which is shown also to be exactly solvable. We analytically determine the topological phase diagram containing seven distinct phases. It is argued that the system is topological when a fermionic many-body Majorana zero-energy edge state emerges. We develop the topological band theory for systems described by non-Hermitian Hamiltonians, whose energy spectra are generally complex. After generalizing the notion of gapped band structures to the non-Hermitian case, we classify "gapped" bands in one and two dimensions by explicitly finding their topological invariants. We find nontrivial generalizations of the Chern number in two dimensions, and a new classification in one dimension, whose topology is determined by the energy dispersion rather than the energy eigenstates. We then study the bulk-edge correspondence and the topological phase transition in two dimensions. Different from the Hermitian case, the transition generically involves an extended intermediate phase with complex-energy band degeneracies at isolated "exceptional points" in momentum space. The past decade's apparent success in predicting and experimentally discovering distinct classes of topological insulators (TIs) and semimetals masks a fundamental shortcoming: out of 200,000 stoichiometric compounds extant in material databases, only several hundred of them are topologically nontrivial. Are TIs that esoteric, or does this reflect a fundamental problem with the current piecemeal approach to finding them? To address this, we propose a new and complete electronic band theory that highlights the link between topology and local chemical bonding, and combines this with the conventional band theory of electrons. Topological Quantum Chemistry is a description of the universal global properties of all possible band structures and materials, comprised of a graph theoretical description of momentum space and a dual group theoretical description in real space. We classify the possible band structures for all 230 crystal symmetry groups that arise from local atomic orbitals, and show which are topologically nontrivial. We show how our topological band theory sheds new light on known TIs, and demonstrate the power of our method to predict a plethora of new TIs., Comment: v1: 8 pages + 40 pages supplemenetary material. We propose characterization of the three-dimensional topological insulator by using the Chern number for the entanglement Hamiltonian (entanglement Chern number). Here we take the extensive spin partition of the system, that pulls out the quantum entanglement between up spin and down spin of the many-body ground state. In three dimensions, the topological insulator phase is described by the section entanglement Chern number, which is the entanglement Chern number for a periodic plane in the Brillouin zone. The section entanglement Chern number serves as an interpolation of the $Z_2$ invariants defined on time-reversal invariant planes. We find that the change of the section entanglement Chern number protects the Weyl point of the entanglement Hamiltonian and the parity of the number of Weyl points distinguishes the strong topological insulator phase from the weak topological insulator phase., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

We develop a method to characterize topological phase transitions for strongly correlated Hamiltonians defined on two-dimensional lattices based on the many-body Berry curvature. Our goal is to identify a class of quantum critical points between topologically nontrivial phases with fractionally quantized Hall (FQH) conductivity and topologically trivial gapped phases through the discontinuities of the many-body Berry curvature in the so-called flux Brillouin zone (fBZ), the latter being defined by imposing all possible twisted boundary conditions. For this purpose, we study the finite-size signatures of several quantum phase transitions between fractional Chern insulators and charge-ordered phases for two-dimensional lattices by evaluating the many-body Berry curvature numerically using exact diagonalization. We observe degeneracy points (nodes) of many-body energy levels at high-symmetry points in the fBZ, accompanied by diverging Berry curvature. We find a correspondence between the number and order of these nodal points, and the change of the topological invariants of the many-body ground states across the transition, in close analogy with Weyl nodes in non-interacting band structures. This motivates us to apply a scaling procedure, originally developed for non-interacting systems, for the Berry curvature at the nodal points. This procedure offers a useful tool for the classification of topological phase transitions in interacting systems harboring FQH-like topological order.

We investigate the effects of non-Hermiticity on topological pumping, and uncover a connection between a topological edge invariant based on topological pumping and the winding numbers of exceptional points. In Hermitian lattices, it is known that the topologically nontrivial regime of the topological pump only arises in the infinite-system limit. In finite non-Hermitian lattices, however, topologically nontrivial behavior can also appear. We show that this can be understood in terms of the effects of encircling a pair of exceptional points during a pumping cycle. This phenomenon is observed experimentally, in a non-Hermitian microwave network containing variable gain amplifiers., 7 pages, 7 figures. The time evolution of entanglement tracks how information propagates in interacting quantum systems. We study entanglement entropy in CFT$_2$ with a time-dependent Hamiltonian. We perturb by operators with time-dependent source functions and use the replica trick to calculate higher order corrections to entanglement entropy. At first order, we compute the correction due to a metric perturbation in AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ and find agreement on both sides of the duality. Past first order, we find evidence of a universal structure of entanglement propagation to all orders. The central feature is that interactions entangle unentangled excitations. Entanglement propagates according to "entanglement diagrams," proposed structures that are motivated by accessory spacetime diagrams for real-time perturbation theory. To illustrate the mechanisms involved, we compute higher-order corrections to free fermion entanglement entropy. We identify an unentangled operator, one which does not change the entanglement entropy to any order. Then, we introduce an interaction and find it changes entanglement entropy by entangling the unentangled excitations. The entanglement propagates in line with our conjecture. We compute several entanglement diagrams. The purpose of this paper is to generalize the notions of Adler’s topological entropy along with their several fundamental properties. A function f : X → Y is said to be R-map if f−1 (V) is regular open in X for every regular open set V in Y. Thus, we initiated a notion of topological nearly entropy for topological R-dynamical systems which is based on nearly compact relative to the space by using R-map.

We discuss a model with stable topological solitons in Minkowski space with only three degrees of freedom, the rotational angles of a spatial Dreibein. This model has four types of solitons differing in two topological quantum numbers which we identify with electric charge and spin. The vacuum has a two-dimensional degeneracy leading to two types of massless excitations, characterised by a topological quantum number which could have a physical equivalent in the photon number., Comment: 9 pages

Polyacetylene was studied extensively in the 1980s. A re-examination of the Su–Schrieffer–Heeger model for polyacetylene shows that it is actually a one-dimensional topological insulator with the end states. Topological phases also exist in other one-dimensional systems.

The use of topological invariants to describe geometric phases of quantum matter has become an essential tool in modern solid state physics. The first instance of this paradigmatic trend can be traced to the study of the quantum Hall effect, in which the Chern number underlies the quantization of the transverse Hall conductivity. More recently, in the framework of time-reversal symmetric topological insulators and quantum spin Hall systems, a new topological classification has been proposed by Fu, Kane and Mele, where the label takes value in \(\mathcal{Z}_{2}\).

Periodically driven (Floquet) systems have been under active theoretical and experimental investigations. This paper aims at a systematic study in the following aspects of Floquet systems: (i) A systematic formulation of topological invariants of Floquet systems based on the cooperation of topology and symmetries. Topological invariants are constructed for the ten symmetry classes in all spatial dimensions, for both homogeneous Floquet systems (Floquet topological insulators and superconductors) and Floquet topological defects. Meanwhile, useful representative Dirac Hamiltonians for all the symmetry classes are obtained and studied. (ii) A general theory of Floquet topological defects, based on the proposed topological invariants. (iii) Models and proposals of Floquet topological defects in low dimensions. Among other defect modes, we investigate Floquet Majorana zero modes and Majorana Pi modes in vortices of topologically trivial superconductors under a periodic drive. In addition, we clarified several notable issues about Floquet topological invariants. The notion of topological entropy dimension for a Z -action has been introduced to measure the subexponential complexity of zero entropy systems. Given a Z 2 -action, along with a Z 2 -entropy dimension, we also consider a finer notion of directional entropy dimension arising from its subactions. The entropy dimension of a Z 2 -action and the directional entropy dimensions of its subactions satisfy certain inequalities. We present several constructions of strictly ergodic Z 2 -subshifts of positive entropy dimension with diverse properties of their subgroup actions. In particular, we show that there is a Z 2 -subshift of full dimension in which every direction has entropy 0.

In this paper, we propose a generalization of the $S$-duality of four-dimensional quantum electrodynamics ($\text{QED}_4$) to $\text{QED}_4$ with fractionally charged excitations, the fractional $S$-duality. Such $\text{QED}_4$ can be obtained by gauging the $\text{U(1)}$ symmetry of a topologically ordered state with fractional charges. When time-reversal symmetry is imposed, the axion angle ($\theta$) can take a nontrivial but still time-reversal invariant value $\pi/t^2$ ($t\in\mathbb{Z}$). Here, $1/t$ specifies the minimal electric charge carried by bulk excitations. Such states with time-reversal and $\text{U(1)}$ global symmetry (fermion number conservation) are fractional topological insulators (FTI). We propose a topological quantum field theory description, which microscopically justifies the fractional $S$-duality. Then, we consider stacking operations (i.e., a direct sum of Hamiltonians) among FTIs. We find that there are two topologically distinct classes of FTIs: type-I and type-II. Type-I ($t\in\mathbb{Z}_{\rm odd}$) can be obtained by directly stacking a non-interacting topological insulator and a fractionalized gapped fermionic state with minimal charge $1/t$ and vanishing $\theta$. But type-II ($t\in\mathbb{Z}_{\rm even}$) cannot be realized through any stacking. Finally, we study the Surface Topological Order of fractional topological insulators., Comment: 10 pages

We considered the question of applying the multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) to describe chiral topological phases. We defined a functional for each layer in the MERA, which captures the correlation length. With some algebraic geometry tools, we rigorously proved its monotonicity with respect to adjacent layers, and the existence of a lower bound for chiral states, which shows a trade-off between the bond dimension and the correlation length. Using this theorem, we showed the number of orbitals per cell (which roughly corresponds to the bond dimension) should grow with the height. Conversely, if we restrict the bond dimensions to be constant, then there is an upper bound of the height. Specifically, we established a no-go theorem stating that we will not approach a renormalization fixed point in this case., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures
