113. Terpenoids in four Inula species from Bulgaria

Abstract

Phytochemical study of the chloroform extract of the aerial parts of Inula germanica L., I. ensifolia L., I. conyza (Griess.) DC. and I. salicina L. led to the identification of 33 terpenoids. β- and α-amyrin, lupeol, taraxasterol, ψ-taraxasterol and their 3-O-acetates and 3-O-palmitates were identified by GC/MS. In addition, the structures of 3-O-palmitates of mainaladiol, arnidiol, faradiol and 16-hydroxylupeol were confirmed by NMR. ent-Kaur-16-en-19- -oic acid and its 15α-(3-methylpentanoyloxy) and 15α-(3-methylbutanoyloxy) derivatives were isolated from I. conyza. Ten closely related sesquiterpene lactones (germacranolides and melampolides) were found in I. germanica and their structural identification was performed by spectral analyses. I. ensifolia and I. salicina were free of sesquiterpene lactones and diterpenoids. All triterpenoids and diterpenoids, grazielia acid, desacetylovatifolin and 8-(2-methylbutanoyloxy)- 1(10),4,11(13)-germacrutrien-6,12-olide-14-oic acid are described for the first time in the studied species. The principal component analysis was used to find a relationship between thе investigated up to now Inula species, growing in Bulgaria.

124. Comparative study of total phenolic content and radical scavenging activity of conventionally and organically grown herbs

Abstract

The aim of the present study was to measure the relative phenolic content in commonly available conventionally and organically grown herbs and to evaluate their antioxidant capacity. Sage (Salvia officinalis), lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) and peppermint (Mentha x piperita) leaves, corriander (Corriandrum sativum) and fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) seeds were used in the present investigation. Total phenolic content (TPhC), measured by Folin-Ciocalteu method, and radical scavenging activity (RSA), using DPPH method were determined in infusions prepared from above mentioned herbs. TPhC ranged from 75.9 to 1126.5 gallic acid equivalents (GAE) mg/l infusion and RSA – from 7.03 to 91.65%. The obtained data also showed that infusions prepared from organically grown sage, peppermint and lemon balm were slightly higher than those obtained from conventionally grown herbs.

Abstract

In this manuscript we investigated the presence of allometric relationships between the length of pregnancy and the body parameters in mammals. The relationships between the length of pregnancy T (d) and the square of body length H² (m²), body mass to surface ratio M/S (kg/m²), body-mass index (BMI)(M/H²) were investigated in mammals: Metatheria and Placentalia, including animals with body mass ranging from 8g in Common shrew to 15t in Killer whale. In result, the found power equations are: T = 114.3 (H²) 0352 ; T= 120.4 S038; T = 9.147 (M/S) 0757 and T = 17.6 BMI 0605. The study showed that the M/S ratio and BMI are nearly equivalent characteristics in relation to length of pregnancy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
