Ammonia volatilization and the distribution of Cu and Zn were investigated in two types of soil treated with coated and uncoated urea. The rate of ammonia volatilization in two weeks after fertilizing with coated urea was 8% in soil 1 (soil derived from river alluvial deposits in Dongting Lake Plain) and 5.15% in soil 2 (red soil derived from quaternary red clay), about half the rates observed when fertilizing with common urea, implying that the hydrolysis speed of the coated urea was lower than for common urea, and that the coated urea can increase nitrogen use efficacy. As for the availability of Cu and Zn, their concentrations decreased in the first week after fertilization, and then increased, which was contrary to the effect of treatment on soil pH. For example, when the pH was 7.99, there was 0.79 mg/kg exchangeable Cu and 0.85 mg/kg exchangeable Zn in the soil derived from river alluvial deposits in Dongting Lake Plain. However, the concentrations of exchangeable Cu and Zn were generally lower for the common urea treatments than those with the coated urea because the peak pH for the common urea treatment was greater. The concentrations of these elements correlated well with pH in the range 4-8 in second order polynomial fits.

BACKGROUND.: A significant number of thyroid fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) cases yield inconclusive results. The recent National Cancer Institute guidelines and those published by other societies are important contributions to standardizing the diagnostic approach. Nevertheless, there are significant issues in the application of guidelines and the evaluation of their clinical efficacy. Data from individual departments can be useful in demonstrating the role of standardized reporting. METHODS.: The authors followed 529 consecutive cases with inconclusive thyroid FNA results that were analyzed in a single laboratory in Western Australia. In that laboratory, standardized reporting in categories has been in place for a decade, and inconclusive cases have been subdivided into indeterminate and atypical groups. Follow-up data was obtained for 341 indeterminate cases (17.2% of total thyroid FNA accessions) and for 188 atypical cases (9.5% of accessions). RESULTS.: In total, 127 nodules with atypical results (67.6%) underwent surgical excision compared with 131 nodules with indeterminate results (38.4%; P < .0001). In 96 excised nodules with atypical results (75.6%), the excised specimens were identified as neoplastic compared with 61 excised nodules with indeterminate results (46.6%; P < .0001). In addition, 31 excised nodules with atypical results (24.4%) had a malignancy proven compared with 17 excised nodules with indeterminate results (13%; P < .05). In addition, 51 of 82 repeat FNAs (62.2%) among patients who had indeterminate results yielded a more specific diagnosis compared with 2 of 9 repeat FNAs (22.2%) among patients who had atypical results (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS.: The routine subcategorization of patients who had inconclusive thyroid FNA reports into indeterminate and atypical groups resulted in statistically significant differences in the likelihood of neoplasia and malignancy. Patients who had indeterminate results were more likely to benefit from repeat FNAC than patients who had atypical results. The current results indicated that patients who fall into these 2 categories are likely to benefit from different clinical management protocols. With simulation test and plastic greenhouse experiment, this paper studied the effects of urea and minerals- coated urea on the soil pH and harmful gases concentrations in plastic greenhouse. The results showed that under simulated condition, the application of these'two N fertilizers led to an initial increase of soil pH, which reached the maximum (an increment of > 50%) within the first week and dropped to the initial level by the end of the fifth week. In plastic greenhouse, applying urea and coated urea resulted in the increase of NH3, NO2 and O3 concentrations. The daily volatilization amount of NH3 and NO2 was higher in urea treatment than in coated urea treatment, and the highest value in urea treatment was 42.36 microg x m(-3) x d(-1) for NH3, 41.95 microg x m(-3) x d(-1) for NO2, and 86.00 microg x m(-3) x d(-1) for O3. The volatilization intensity of NH3 and NO2 was influenced by temperature and sunlight, while the O3 concentration was influenced by sunlight.

Determination and comparison of 34 kinds of trace elements in 5 samples of muli before and after processing have been conducted by ICP-AES. The result shows that all the elements have changed in contents.

The experimental results reveal that arsenic content in pig magnetitum is about 5-25 times as in the calcinated samples. Therefore the toxic effect of magnetitum can be eliminated or reduced after it is calcinated.

The results have revealed that arsenic content in pig cishi is about 11 times that in the calcinated samples. Therefore the toxic effect of cishi is eliminated or reduced after it is calcinated.

Determination and comparison of arsenic contents in 11 samples of calcination and pig native copper have been conducted. The results reveal that arsenic contents in pig native copper are about 10 times of those in the calcination samples. Therefore the toxic effect of native copper can be eliminated or reduced.

Soluble mercury contents in Baochi San, Xiaoer Zhibon Ding and Xiaoer Baishou Dan have been determined using dithizone method. This method has the advantages of short digestion time, clear digestion end point, simple operation and reproducible results. The recovery rate ranges from 98.4 to 103%. The data obtained can be used as a reference for controlling soluble mercury contents in Chinese traditional patent medicines containing cinnabar.
