High speed composite rotors typically require containment structures to protect personnel and equipment from high energy rotor material and fragments that result from rotor burst events, which may occur during rotor overspeed. Loading to the containment structure during a burst event is a function of rotor design and containment geometry. A containment system proposed by The University of Texas at Austin Center for Electromechanics uses graphite-reinforced composite cylinders to dissipate radial kinetic energy from the rotor debris and reduce torque loads transmitted to the rotor housing and mounting hardware. Using an analogous mass-spring-damper system, a model was developed with bond graph techniques to estimate containment loads and response. The bond graphs, state equations, and simulation results are compared with experimental results. The model is able to predict the general trends observed in experimental data and is used as a design tool for containment systems.

Aerosols -- Analysis ,Radioisotopes -- Testing ,Business ,Electronics ,Electronics and electrical industries ,Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty - Abstract
Detecting nuclear debris from a nuclear weapon exploded in or substantially vented to the Earth's atmosphere constitutes the most certain indication that a violation of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty has occurred. For this reason, a radionuclide portion of the International Monitoring System is being designed and implemented. The IMS will monitor aerosols and gaseous xenon isotopes to detect atmospheric and underground tests, respectively. The monitoring network will be composed of a number of manual or automatic stations which have the capacity to sample large volumes of air each day and make sensitive gamma-ray spectroscopy measurements of the samples collected. In addition, a number of Certified Laboratories will perform confirmatory measurements on samples that show detectable quantities of fission products. This may be accomplished by measuring (instrumentally or by radiochemical means) certain isotopes which discriminate weapons debris from reactor accidents and other releases of fission products. An automated system, the Radionuclide Aerosol Sampler/Analyzer (RASA), has been developed at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory to meet CTBT aerosol measurement requirements. This is achieved by the use of a novel sampling apparatus, a high-resolution germanium detector, and very sophisticated software. This system draws a large volume of air ([approximately]20,000 [m.sup.3]/day), performs automated gamma-ray spectral measurements (MDC(140Ba) < 30[Mu]Bq/[m.sup.3]), and communicates this and other data to a central data facility. Automated systems offer the added benefit of rigid controls, easily implemented QA/QC procedures, and centralized depot maintenance and operation. Other types of automated communication include pull or push transmission of State-Of-Health data, commands, and configuration data. In addition, a graphical user interface, Telnet, and other interactive communications are supported over ordinary phone or network lines. This system has been the subject of a USAF commercialization effort to meet US CTBT monitoring commitments. It will also be available to other CTBT signatories and the monitoring community for various governmental, environmental, or commercial needs. The current status of the commercialization will be discussed.

The Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) [1] was recently signed by President Clinton and is intended to eliminate all nuclear weapons testing. One way in which the treaty seeks to accomplish this is by the establishment of The International Monitoring System. As stated in the latest Working Papers of the Draft CTBT, 'The International Monitoring System shall comprise facilities for seismological monitoring, radionuclide monitoring including certified laboratories, hydroacoustic monitoring, infrasound monitoring, and respective means of communication, and shall be supported by the International Data Centre of the Technical Secretariat'. Radionuclide monitoring consists of both radionuclides associated with particulates and relevant noble gases. This type of monitoring is quite valuable since indications of a nuclear test in the form of radioactive particulate or radioactive noble gases may be detected at great distances from the detonation site. The system presented here is concerned only with radioactive particulate monitoring and is described as an automated sampler/analyzer which has been developed for the Department of Energy (DOE) at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL).

The 9 MJ range gun system under construction at the Center for Electromechanics at The University of Texas at Austin is designed as a self-contained, field portable electromagnetic launch system to accelerate a salvo of three projectiles to a muzzle energy of 9 MJ at velocities ranging from 2.5 to 4.0 km/s. The range gun system will consist of a self-excited air-core compulsator, a 90 mm bore railgun launcher, prime power and auxiliary systems, solid state switches for field rectification and gun discharge, and the controls and data acquisition required to operate the system. The compulsator is designed to deliver 3.2 MA current pulses to the railgun launcher at a peak power rating of 10 GW. Originally, a passively compensated compulsator design was developed until a projectile acceleration limit was imposed. This forced a redesign of the system, incorporating several design refinements and utilizing selective passive compensation to shape the compulsator output pulse. Design of the selectively passive compulsator was finalized in 1989 and fabrication of the system components was initiated. System fabrication was well underway when an attempt to install a rotor flywheel ring during January 1992 resulted in a fatal crack through the rotor fly-wheel and field excitation armature winding. After an extensive review of the original rotor design and system performance requirements, a rotor rebuild program was initiated in May of 1992. The rotor rebuild program included frequent design evaluations, extensive material characterization, support from experts in the design and fabrication of composite structures, and a reduction in the system salvo fire requirements. Final design and fabrication of other system components paralleled the rotor rebuild effort, allowing testing of the other system components. Prime power and auxiliary systems testing was successfully completed in August of 1993 and motoring of the compulsator using a test shaft is planned for April of 1994. The lightweight 90 mm railgun, breech connection, and flexible bus cables developed for the range gun system are currently being tested at the Electric Armaments Research Center at Picatinny Arsenal, New Jersey. Final assembly and laboratory testing of the selectively passive compulsator will begin in July of 1994, with range testing of the complete system beginning in October of 1994. This paper will describe some of the innovations incorporated into the design of the 9 MJ Range Gun system compulsator and present the current status of the fabrication and testing efforts. Initial performance of the 90 mm railgun during testing at the Electric Armaments Research Center will also be presented.

The reaction of molten pyrazole with molybdenum oxides synthesizes a pair of octamolybdenum compounds, consisting of bridging pyrazolate and terminal pyrazole ligands. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction establishes their structures. Mo(VI) and Mo(V) ions, with the Mo(V) ions connected in pairs by metal-metal single bonds, were observed for the octamolybdenum species in Mo8(pz)6O18(pzH)6-2pzH.

The range gun compulsator is a self excited, air-cored alternator designed to provide pulsed power in a field portable electromagnetic launch system capable of accelerating a salvo of nine projectiles to a muzzle energy of 9 MJ at velocities ranging from 2.5 to 4.0 km/s (1). The compulsator is designed to deliver 3.2 MA current pulses to a railgun launcher at a peak power rating of 10 GW. The stator consists of a multi-turn compensating winding with a laminated stainless steel support structure, an aluminum excitation field coil and support structure, a stainless steel stator casing and main end plates, hydrostatic bearings, seals, support pedestals, and current collection mechanisms for the field excitation and main armature circuits. The two-pole compensating winding provides selective passive compensation for the main armature, generating a flat-topped current waveform and limiting projectile acceleration. The room temperature field coil operates at 41.5 kA peak current and generates an average 2.1 Tesla radial field at the rotor perimeter. The stator casing and end plates are stainless steel weldments, with a ribbed design to reduce weight without sacrificing stiffness. The rotor is supported on hydrostatic fluid film bearings with high performance segmented carbon ring seals. There are two discrete current collection systems; the field excitation system operates at 17 kV and 41.5 kA, and the armature system operates at 6 kV and 3.2 MA. Several novel techniques were used to improve the high voltage electrical insulation in the brush mechanisms and manage the large magnetic forces generated during discharge. Electromagnetic finite element techniques were used to calculate the magnetic field distribution and induced currents in the stator structure. The results of this analysis were used to calculate loading distributions on the stator structures, which were applied to detailed finite element models for stress and deflection analyses of the stator components. This paper will provide a brief summary of the structural analysis of the compulsator stator as well as a detailed description of the major stator components. Fabrication and assembly techniques will also be presented, along with the current status of the project.

- Abstract
Multiplex families with a high prevalence of a psychiatric disorder are often examined to identify rare genetic variants with large effect sizes. In the present study, we analysed whether the risk for bipolar disorder (BD) in BD multiplex families is influenced by common genetic variants. Furthermore, we investigated whether this risk is conferred mainly by BD-specific risk variants or by variants also associated with the susceptibility to schizophrenia or major depression. In total, 395 individuals from 33 Andalusian BD multiplex families (166 BD, 78 major depressive disorder, 151 unaffected) as well as 438 subjects from an independent, BD case/control cohort (161 unrelated BD, 277 unrelated controls) were analysed. Polygenic risk scores (PRS) for BD, schizophrenia (SCZ), and major depression were calculated and compared between the cohorts. Both the familial BD cases and unaffected family members had higher PRS for all three psychiatric disorders than the independent controls, with BD and SCZ being significant after correction for multiple testing, suggesting a high baseline risk for several psychiatric disorders in the families. Moreover, familial BD cases showed significantly higher BD PRS than unaffected family members and unrelated BD cases. A plausible hypothesis is that, in multiplex families with a general increase in risk for psychiatric disease, BD development is attributable to a high burden of common variants that confer a specific risk for BD. The present analyses demonstrated that common genetic risk variants for psychiatric disorders are likely to contribute to the high incidence of affective psychiatric disorders in the multiplex families. However, the PRS explained only part of the observed phenotypic variance, and rare variants might have also contributed to disease development.

- Abstract
Disorders of the brain can exhibit considerable epidemiological comorbidity and often share symptoms, provoking debate about their etiologic overlap. We quantified the genetic sharing of 25 brain disorders from genome-wide association studies of 265,218 patients and 784,643 control participants and assessed their relationship to 17 phenotypes from 1,191,588 individuals. Psychiatric disorders share common variant risk, whereas neurological disorders appear more distinct from one another and from the psychiatric disorders. We also identified significant sharing between disorders and a number of brain phenotypes, including cognitive measures. Further, we conducted simulations to explore how statistical power, diagnostic misclassification, and phenotypic heterogeneity affect genetic correlations. These results highlight the importance of common genetic variation as a risk factor for brain disorders and the value of heritability-based methods in understanding their etiology. © 2018 American Association for the Advancement of Science. - Abstract
Background Trypanosoma cruzi invades and replicates inside mammalian cells, which can lead to chronic Chagas disease in humans. Trypanosoma copemani infects Australian marsupials and recent investigations indicate it may be able to invade mammalian cells in vitro, similar to T. cruzi. Here, T. cruzi 10R26 strain (TcIIa) and two strains of T. copemani [genotype 1 (G1) and genotype 2 (G2)] were incubated with marsupial cells in vitro. Live-cell time-lapse and fluorescent microscopy, combined with high-resolution microscopy (transmission and scanning electron microscopy) were used to investigate surface interactions between parasites and mammalian cells. Results The number of parasites invading cells was significantly higher in T. cruzi compared to either genotype of T. copemani, between which there was no significant difference. While capable of cellular invasion, T. copemani did not multiply in host cells in vitro as there was no increase in intracellular amastigotes over time and no release of new trypomastigotes from host cells, as observed in T. cruzi. Exposure of host cells to G2 trypomastigotes resulted in increased host cell membrane permeability within 24 h of infection, and host cell death/blebbing was also observed. G2 parasites also became embedded in the host cell membrane. Conclusions Trypanosoma copemani is unlikely to have an obligate intracellular life-cycle like T. cruzi. However, T. copemani adversely affects cell health in vitro and should be investigated in vivo in infected host tissues to better understand this host-parasite relationship. Future research should focus on increasing understanding of the T. copemani life history and the genetic, physiological and ecological differences between different genotypes.

- Abstract
• Intertidal rocky habitats comprise over 50% of the shorelines of the world, supporting a diversity of marine life and providing extensive ecosystem services worth in the region of US$ 5-10 trillion per year. • They are valuable indicators of the impacts of climate change on the wider marine environment and ecosystems. • Changes in species distributions, abundance and phenology have already been observed around the world in response to recent rapid climate change. • Species-level responses will have considerable ramifications for the structure of communities and trophic interactions, leading to eventual changes in ecosystem functioning (e.g. less primary producing canopy-forming algae in the North-east Atlantic). • Whilst progress is made on the mitigation1 required to achieve goals of a lower-carbon world, much can be done to enhance resilience to climate change. Managing the multitude of other interactive impacts on the marine environment, over which society has greater potential control (e.g. overfishing, invasive non-native species, coastal development, and pollution), will enable adaptation1 in the short and medium term of the next 5-50 years.

- Abstract
Although the Arctic covers 6% of our planet’s surface and plays a key role in the Earth’s climate it remains one of the least explored ecosystems. The global change induced decline of sea ice has led to increasing anthropogenic presence in the Arctic Ocean. Exploitation of its resources is already underway, and Arctic waters are likely important future shipping lanes as indicated by already increasing numbers of fishing vessels, cruise liners and hydrocarbon prospecting in the area over the past decade. Global estimates of plastic entering the oceans currently exceed results based on empirical evidence by up to three orders of magnitude highlighting that we have not yet identified some of the major sinks of plastic in our oceans. Fragmentation into microplastics could explain part of the discrepancy. Indeed, microplastics were identified from numerous marine ecosystems globally, including the Arctic. Here, we analysed horizons of ice cores from the western and eastern Fram Strait by focal plane array based micro-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy to assess if sea ice is a sink of microplastic. Ice cores were taken from land-locked and drifting sea ice to distinguish between local entrainment of microplastics vs long-distance transport. Mean concentrations of 2 x 106 particles m-3 in pack ice and 6 x 105 particles m-3 in land-locked ice were detected (numbers of fibers will soon be added). Eleven different polymer types were identified; polyethylene (PE) was the most abundant one. Preliminary results from four further ice cores from the central Arctic range in a similar order but the microplastics composition was very different. Calculation of drift trajectories by back-tracking of the ice floes sampled indicates multiple source areas, which explains the differences in the microplastic composition. Preliminary analysis of snow samples taken from ice floes in the Fram Strait showed numerous fibers of yet unknown but most likely anthropogenic origin indicating atm

- Abstract
For many years, the pollution of the oceans with marine litter received only little attention from the public although the global plastic production has grown steadily. However, since the “discovery” of the oceanic garbage patches and microplastics the littering of the oceans has become a hot topic, which is reflected in strong recent increases in the number of publications. Despite growing research efforts many questions remain unanswered and the new wealth of information does not readily transpire to the general public, which is left unsettled. For example, it is still unclear what the overall extent of ocean pollution is, or how the enormous amounts of oceanic plastics affect marine life and ecosystems. To overcome this uncertainty and make best use of the existing knowledge, we currently develop an online portal for marine litter and microplastic pollution named LITTERBASE. As of early 2017, LITTERBASE will provide access to the current state of understanding of marine litter and microplastics to the general public and stakeholders. Published records of marine litter and microplastics and their impact on marine life will be compiled in a database. The regularly updated information will be displayed in distribution maps and other graphs in an interactive online portal. In the long run, data from citizen scientists may also be integrated into these infographs.
