Abstract

The total cross-section of 12C(α,γ)16O was measured for the first time by a direct and ungated detection of the 16O recoils. This measurement in inverse kinematics using the recoil mass separator ERNA in combination with a windowless He gas target allowed to collect data with high precision in the energy range E = 1.9 to 4.9 MeV. The data represent new information for the determination of the astrophysical S(E) factor.

Abstract

The electron screening in the d(d, p)t reaction has been studied for the deuterated metal Pt at a sample temperature T = 20 °C–340 °C and for Co at T = 20 °C and 200 °C. The enhanced electron screening decreases with increasing temperature, where the data agree with the plasma model of Debye applied to the quasi-free metallic electrons. The data represent the first observation of a temperature dependence of a nuclear cross section. We also measured the screening effect for the deuterated metal Ti (an element of group 4 of the periodic table) at T = −10 °C–200 °C: above 50 °C, the hydrogen solubility dropped to values far below 1 and a large screening effect became observable. Similarly, all metals of groups 3 and 4 and the lanthanides showed a solubility of a few per cent at T = 200 °C (compared to T = 20 °C) and a large screening also became observable. Within the Debye model, the deduced number of valence electrons per metallic atom agrees with the corresponding number from the Hall coefficient, for all metals investigated.

117. Radiocarbon Dating of Mortars with a Pozzolana Aggregate Using the Cryo2SoniC Protocol to Isolate the Binder.

Abstract

To date, finding a technique able to effectively isolate the carbon signal from the binder of a mortar is still an open challenge. In this paper, the radiocarbon (14C) dating of one of the most challenging and diffuse types of mortar, the one with pozzolana aggregate, is investigated. Eight mortar samples from three archaeological sites near Rome (Italy) underwent a selection process called Cryo2SoniC. The selected fractions were analyzed by the accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) 14C technique and compared to known historical references. Additional scanning electron microscopy analysis and petrographic investigations were done, respectively, to check the grain size of the fractions selected by Cryo2SoniC, and further, to characterize the original mortar samples. The masses of carbon yielded from the dated fractions were almost half of those released from some aerial mortars. The 14C dating results were accurate for pozzolana mortars, from buried and unburied structures, with calcination relics and small contamination of secondary calcite. A limitation in the purification protocol was observed on samples with a massive contamination of secondary calcite deposition of ground water origin, occluding porosity and substituting up to the 80% of the original binder matrix. Abstract

This paper concerns the relative sea-level changes associated with the Atlantic Patagonian coast derived from sea-level index points whose elevation was determined by a differential global position system (DGPS). Bioencrustations from outcrops located near Camarones, Chubut, Argentina, consist of autochthonous deposits characterized by Austromegabalanus psittacus (Molina, 1782), encrusting acervulinid foraminifera, coralline red algae and bryozoans. The association of the different organisms is interpreted as being associated with an intertidal environment, and they have been used as index points to establish the relative sea-level position. The main conclusion is that the relative sea-level between c. 7000 and 5300 cal. yr BP was in the range of c. 2-4 m a.s.l., with a mean value of c. 3.5 m a.s.l. Our data seem to support the existence of different rates of relative sea-level fall in different sectors of Atlantic Patagonia during the Holocene and highlight the importance of a more precise and accurate relative sea-level estimation by producing new data and revisiting the indicative meaning of most of the indicators so far used in the area. Abstract

A 7Be ion beam of several particle pA at 8 MeV has been produced at the TTT3 tandem of the University "Federico II" in Naples. The 7Be nuclides were formed via the 7Li(p,n)7Be reaction using a metallic Li target and an 11.4 MeV proton beam of 20 μA intensity, delivered by the cyclotron in Debrecen. Methods of hot chemistry were used to extract the 7Be nuclides from the Li matrix and to prepare the 7Be cathodes for the ion sputter source of the tandem. Examples of 7Be beam applications are given. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

An experiment has been performed at the nuclear power plant of Garigliano (Caserta, Italy), aiming at the measurement of transfer factors of 137Cs and 60Co radionuclides from the irrigation water to a soil-plant system, with particular attention to the influence on such transfers of the irrigation technique (ground or aerial). Tomato plants were irrigated weekly with water contaminated with 137Cs and 60Co (about 375Bq/m2 week), using both irrigation techniques. After 13 weeks, fruits, leaves, stems, roots and soil were sampled, and radionuclide concentrations were measured by high-resolution γ spectroscopy. It was found that the activity allocated to the plant organs is significantly dependent upon the irrigation technique, amounting to 2.1% and 1.6% of the activity given in the cultivation for aerial treatment and 0.4% and 0.3% for the ground treatment, for 137Cs and 60Co respectively. The activity absorbed by plants is allocated mainly in leaves (>55%), while less then 10% is stored in the fruits, for both irrigation techniques. Transfer factors (soil-plant and irrigation water-plant) of tomato plants and of weeds have been determined for 137Cs and 60Co, as well as for natural 40K in the soil.
