Abstract

We conducted a feasibility study in Indochina (Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam) with the aim of promoting biomass and bioenergy markets, technology transfer, rural development, and income generation. Policy development is guided by the International Union of Forest Research Institutions (IUFRO) Task Force “Sustainable Forest Bioenergy Network”. In this paper, we highlight the achievements up to now and present results of a multi-stakeholder questionnaire in combination with a quantitative analysis of the National Bioenergy Development Plans (NBDPs). We found a gap between official documents and working group assessments. NBDPs are focused on the market development, technology transfer, and funding possibilities of a regional bioenergy strategy, while the respondents of a questionnaire (working groups) favored more altruistic goals, i.e., sustainable resource management, environmental protection and climate change mitigation, generation of rural income, and community involvement, etc. We therefore suggest the following measures to ensure regulations that support the original aims of the network (climate change mitigation, poverty alleviation, sustainable resource use, and diversification of energy generation): (i) Consideration of science-based evidence for drafting bioenergy policies, particularly in the field of biomass production and harvesting; (ii) invitation of stakeholders representing rural communities to participate in this process; (iii) development of sustainability criteria; (iv) feedback cycles ensuring more intensive discussion of policy drafts; (v) association of an international board of experts to provide scientifically sound feedback and input; and (vi) establishment of a local demonstration region, containing various steps in the biomass/bioenergy supply chain including transboundary collaboration in the ACMECS region.

Abstract

We have developed a novel flying magnetic readout head based on the concept of magnetooptical transfer. A special feature of this head is that its slider is made of a GGG substrate itself. To improve the readout characteristic of this head, the optical system was adjusted and the grooves were formed on a magnetic garnet film. The readout waveform and signal envelope became stable and the maximum CNR obtained was 52dB (RBW = 30kHz). The CNR was almost constant for the recorded track width from 80[[micro]meter] to 2.7[[micro]meter]. Index Terms - Readout head, Magnetooptical, Magnetic transfer, Hard disk.

Abstract

In order to raise the throughput of low-energy X-ray signals appearing in a background of high-energy pulses, a new pulse-processor that measures the rise time of a trapezoidal waveform instead of the peak height has been developed. A rectangular pre-filter and a gated integrator are used to make the wave-shape at the shaper output linear. A rectangular pulse is formed by adding a differentiated step signal and its integration. The rise time of the trapezoidal waveform is inversely proportional to the height of the input step pulse. Therefore, processing time for a high-energy pulse is shorter than that for low-energy one. Consequently, the pile-up loss of the low-energy X-rays is reduced.

Abstract

Summary: Hormonal and ultrastructural examinations of the testis were performed in an XX-male. Plasma levels of testosterone and prolactin were within the normal range, but FSH and LH were higher than the normal range. The response of testosterone to the administration of HCG is within the normal range. In the interstitium marked hyperplasia of Leydig cells was observed. The presence of paracrystalline inclusions and the absence of Reinke's crystals were representative changes in Leydig cells. Seminiferous tubules were filled with Sertoli cells and spermatogenesis was completely abolished. Intermediate filaments were abundant and annulate lamellae were absent in Sertoli cells. Zusammenfassung: Bei einem XX-Mann wurden Hormonanalysen und eine Ultrastruk-tur-Untersuchung des Hodengewebes durchgefuhrt. Wahrend die Testosteron- und Prolak-tin-Werte normal ausfielen, lagen die Werte fur FSH und LH im erhohten Bereich. Nach HCG-Stimulierung ergab sich eine normale Testosteronreaktion. Histologisch lag eine deut-liche Leydig-Zell-Hyperplasie vor. Der Nachweis parakristalliner Einschlusse und das Feh-len von Reinke-Kristallen waren reprasentative Veranderungen in den Leydig-Zellen. Die Tubuli seminiferi waren mit Sertolizellen angefullt und die Spermatogenese fehlte voll-standig. Intermediare Filamente waren reichlich vorhanden und geringelte Lamellen fehl-ten in den Sertolizellen.

Abstract

Using a heat-pulse modulation technique, phosphorescence spectra of 9-xanthone have been studied in n-pentane at 77 and 2.1 K. The three legitimate phosphorescent levels with different lifetimes are detected at 25 751, 25 766, and 25 774 cm-1 above the zero-vibrational level of the ground state. The origin of these multiple levels is explained in terms of spin–orbit interaction superimposed on environmental electrostatic coupling between T1(ππ*) and T2(nπ*). The two coupling constants obtained are: (for the spin–orbit coupling) |<1ξ|Hso|2η>| =15.70 cm-1 (ξ=x, η=y or vice versa); (for environmental direct coupling) <1ζ|Henv|2ζ> =3.14 cm-1 (ζ=x, y, or z). For comparison, the T←S phosphorescence excitation spectrum, measured in the same matrix, are in good agreement with the calculated ones. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
