We show how the Killing spinors of some maximally supersymmetric supergravity solutions whose metrics describe symmetric spacetimes (including $AdS,AdS\times S$ and H$pp$-waves) can be easily constructed using purely geometrical and group-theoretical methods. The calculation of the supersymmetry algebras is extremely simple in this formalism., Comment: misprints corrected and references added. Version to appear in Classical and Quantum Gravity

We show how all known N=2, d=4,5,6 maximally supersymmetric vacua (Hpp-waves and aDSxS solutions) are related through dimensional reduction/oxidation preserving all the unbroken supersymmetries. In particular we show how the N=2, d=5 family of vacua (which are the near-horizon geometry of supersymmetric rotating black holes) interpolates between aDS_2xS^3 and aDS_3xS^2 in parameter space and how it can be dimensionally reduced to an N=2, d=4 dyonic Robinson-Bertotti solution with geometry aDS_2xS^2 and oxidized to an N=2, d=6 solution with aDS_3xS^3 geometry (which is the near-horizon of the self-dual string)., Comment: Latex2e, 19 pages, 1 figure. v2: typos corrected, refs. added. v3: very minor corrections, more refs. added, version to be published in Classical and Quantum Gravity

High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
We compare two applications of the gauge/gravity correspondence to a non conformal gauge theory, based respectively on the study of D-branes wrapped on supersymmetric cycles and of fractional D-branes on orbifolds. We study two brane systems whose geometry is dual to N=4, D=2+1 super Yang-Mills theory, the first one describing D4-branes wrapped on a two-sphere inside a Calabi-Yau two-fold and the second one corresponding to a system of fractional D2/D6-branes on the orbifold R^4/Z_2. By probing both geometries we recover the exact perturbative running coupling constant and metric on the moduli space of the gauge theory. We also find a general expression for the running coupling constant of the gauge theory in terms of the "stringy volume" of the two-cycle which is involved in both types of brane systems., Comment: AMS-LaTeX, 35 pages, no figures. Passive acoustic detection has the potential to provide data regarding the location of right whales. Right whales are not known to produce songs; nonetheless, the call repertoire of Eubalaena australis, the southern right whale, has been exhaustively and quantitatively analysed. This paper describes sound production by southern right whales in the coast of Uruguay (35°S) in the South Atlantic Ocean. No previous study of southern right whale sounds in Uruguayan waters exists. The calls recorded were: Up call, a low tonal call with a frequency of 50Hz to 200Hz; High call, which has the most energy in a range of 200–500Hz, and Pulsive call, a complex mixture made up of amplitude modulated noise and tones, 50– 200Hz. This is the first acoustic study of E. australis in this region and focusses on the occurrence of calls previously identified by Clark to obtain more information about the acoustic behaviour of this cetacean in Uruguayan coastal waters. Future efforts will be made to obtain more recordings in different locations along the coast of Uruguay, where annual sightings occur. Such information is essential for examining global differences between vocalisations of southern right whales.

We present and study a new chain of 10-d T duality related solutions and their 11-d parents whose existence had been predicted in the literature based in U duality requirements in 4 d. The first link is the S dual of the D7-brane. The next link has 6 spatial worldvolume dimensions, it is charged w.r.t. the RR 7-form but depends only on 2 transverse dimensions since the third has to be compactified in a circle and is isometric and hence is similar in this respect to the KK monopole. The next link has 5 spatial worldvolume dimensions, it is charged w.r.t. the RR 6-form but depends only on 2 transverse dimensions since the 3rd and 4th have to be compactified in circles and are isometric and so on. All these solutions are identical when reduced over the p spatial worldvolume dimensions and preserve a 1/2 on the supersymmetries. Their masses depend on the square of the radii of the isometric directions, just as for the KK monopole. We give a general map of these branes and their duality relations and show how they must appear in the supersymmetry algebra., Comment: A few misprints corrected

Abstract The effect of diazinon, an organophosphate pesticide used to control pests such as acarine and insects, was evaluated in cultured human peripheral blood lymphocyres. Two diazinon presentations were used: commercially available diazinon (Knox Out®, Mexico) and an analytical grade standard. The lymphocytes cellular pellet was obtained by the erythrocyte sedimentation method to obtain the mononuclear cells suspended in plasma. The lymphocytes were incubated in culture medium for 24, 48 and 72 h, in absence and presence of different diazinon concentrations (μM-mM). These treatments were in absence and presence of mitogen phytohemagglutinin (PHA). An initial study was carried out with a broad range of diazinon concentrations (0.1-1 mM) without PHA and since high concentration showed no effect, a second set of experiments was repeated using concentrations ranging from 5 until 50 μM of both pure and commercial diazinon, in the absence or presence of PHA. No significant effects were detected for the concentrations between 0.1 and 1 mM. Concentrations of 5 to 50 μM drastically caused reduction of cell viability or stimulated lymphocyte proliferation over control. Nevertheless, this effect was not observed in the presence of diazinon and PHA, only a decrease the quantity of viable cells was observed. Additionally, necrotic and apoptotic cells were visualized in cultures exposed to diazinon. Keywords: Organophosphate pesticide, lymphocyte, cell culture.

Abstract In this work, we present a review over the most relevant information of the neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2), which is known as an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by the presence of bilateral vestibular schwannomas. Other tumors such as meningiomas and ependymomas may be present. The disease is caused by mutations in the NF2 gene, which encodes a protein known as merlin or schwannomin. Merlin is structurally related to the ERM (Ezrina-Radixina-Moesina) family of proteins, a group of molecules responsible for linking the signals coming from the plasma membrane glycoproteins to the actin cytoskeleton. The NF2 gene is considered as a tumor suppressor gene, and the evidence indicates that merlin functions by regulating the cell growth and proliferation. However, the specific mechanisms through which merlin fulfill its functions as a tumor suppressor remains enigmatic. Several molecules that interact with merlin have been identified. This has provided clues to determine the cellular processes in which merlin participates. These molecules include structural proteins, plasma membrane receptors, cytosolic proteins, GTPases, and cytoskeletal adapters. Mutations in the NF2 gene affect the functionality of merlin, altering tha mecanisms of action of merlin, giving rise to NF2. Further studies are needed to determine the precise role of merlin on the control of cell proliferation. Keywords: neurofibromatosis type 2, merlin, cytoskeleton, plasma membrane.

Abstract The extensive use of pesticides can cause many human health problems. However, the effects of pesticides on a biochemical level are still poorly understood. In this study we analyzed the effect of different pesticides on the plasma membrane Ca2+-ATPase (PMCA) and on the sarco/ endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase (SERCA) activities. Different amounts of pesticides were added to the Ca2+- dependent ATPase assays in order to determine if they were affecting the ATPase activity. The results showed that PMCA activity was partially inhibited by deltamethrin to 51.85% ± 3.7 when its concentration in the reaction medium was 0.5 mM, while cypermethrin and glyphosate stimulated the PMCA activity at the lowest concentrations tested. The maximum stimulatory effect of cypermethrin was of 155% ± 9.0 at a concentration of 0.2 mM. In addition, the herbicide glyphosate stimulated the activity 111% ± 2.0 at a concentration of 0.2 mM. In conclusion, our results showed that PMCA activity was partially inhibited by deltamethrin, but cypermethrin and glyphosate stimulated their activity. Our findings suggest that cypermethrin and deltamethrin have different structure- activity relationships. However, SERCA was not sensitive to deltamethrin or glyphosate. These differences may be reflected in disturbs over cellular calcium regulation.

Abstract The present research is about the development of a precursor of unconventional cationic surfactant by using the standard procedures of the Williamson ether synthesis. It has been intended to design a new type of heterogemini surfactant with a rigid spacer and non identical head groups in the structure of the surfactant. In the synthesis suggested, the preliminary step to obtain a surfactant structure with two aromatic rings as rigid spacer has been established. This synthesized precursor provides with a rigid spacer to the structure of the surfactant due to the presence of a biphenyl group; it is expected that, with this surfactant, it further presents a reduction on both the curvature of micellar aggregates as well as the Critical Micelle Concentration (CMC) in respect of those previous reports where conventional surfactants are used. To establish the steps of the synthesis, the temperature during the time of reaction has been varied, as well as the velocity of addition of the compound containing the head group which is pretended to be added to the surfactant structure proposed. For the characterization, the infrared spectroscopy technique (FT-IR) and the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) were used. Keywords: surfactants, synthesis, precursor, CMC.

Abstract Pesticides are a broad group of heterogeneous substances with great benefit to the human population, as they are used for decreasing or killing a broad number of pests involved in transmission of diseases or involved in decreasing the levels of food production. In this work we studied the effect of glyphosate (GF) over the hydrolytic activity of plasma membrane Ca2+-ATPase (PMCA) from human erythrocytes, either in their native conformational state (without calmodulin [CaM]) or in the active complex CaM-PMCA. Our results showed that GF produced a dual effect, activation and inhibition, and the effect was a dose-response effect: at low-concentrations of GF (0.05-0.1 mM), ATP hydrolysis mediated by PMCA was stimulated up to 62.5%, however with CaM the increase was only 20% (with respect to the controls without GF). Both conformational forms of PMCA were partially inhibited with GF 0.3-0.5 and 0.4- 0.5 mM respectively. An analysis performed on PMCA affinity for the substrate (ATP) showed that GF was significantly increasing the ATP consumption (Vmax) and it was only significant for PMCA in their native conformation. However, for the two conformations studied, GF was unable to significantly affect the affinity of PMCA for the substrate ATP (Km). In conclusion, GF affects the velocity of the PMCA’s catalytic cycle without affecting its affinity for ATP, and this may be due to an interaction between GF and the C-terminus of PMCA. This effect may disturb calcium homeostasis in the cell, leading to the activation of several cellular processes such as apoptosis. Keywords: Ca2+-ATPase, plasma membrane, glyphosate, calmodulin, human erythrocyte.

We have studied the external surface (elytra) of the Sonoran Desert beetle (Eleodes eschscholtzii). Our aim was to assess whether this species has similar traits to some beetles from the Namibian Desert that are known to have hierarchical micropatterns that allow for water harvesting. We have conducted scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and apparent contact angle experiments on specimens collected at two sampling sites with different ambient humidity. The results show that the beetle’s external surface microstructure is composed of a compact array of polygons with randomly scattered protuberances. The density of the polygons in the microstructure is different for individuals collected in different sites: the polygon array is denser in the more humid site and less dense in the drier site. The measured contact angles also depend on the sampling site. For individuals collected in the drier site, the average apparent contact angle is 70°, whereas for the more humid site, the average apparent contact angle is 92°. FT-IR experiments are consistent with the presence of hydrophobic wax compounds in the studied surfaces. Our investigation opens new questions that are currently being addressed by experiments that are underway. For instance, it would be interesting to know whether the observed nanopatterns could be used in biomimetic devices for water harvesting purposes.

Since mid-2020 there have been complexities and difficulties in the standardisation and administration of nasopharyngeal swabs. Coupled with the variable and/or poor accuracy of lateral flow devices, this has led to increased societal ‘testing fatigue’ and reduced confidence in test results. Consequently, asymptomatic individuals have developed reluctance towards repeat testing, which remains the best way to monitor COVID-19 cases in the wider population. On the other hand, saliva-based PCR, a non-invasive, highly sensitive, and accurate test suitable for everyone, is gaining momentum as a straightforward and reliable means of detecting SARS-CoV-2 in symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals. Here, we provide an itemised list of the equipment and reagents involved in the process of sample submission, inactivation and analysis, as well as a detailed description of how each of these steps is performed.

We present the most general family of stationary point-like solutions of pure N=4, d=4 Supergravity characterized by completely independent electric and magnetic charges, mass, angular momentum and NUT charge plus the asymptotic values of the scalars. It includes, for specific values of the charges all previously known BPS and non-BPS, extreme and non-extreme black holes and Taub-NUT solutions. As a family of solutions, it is manifestly invariant under T and S duality transformations and exhibits a structure related to the underlying special geometry structure of the theory. Finally, we study briefly the black-hole-type subfamily of metrics and give explicit expressions for their entropy and temperature., Comment: Very minor correction. References added. Boerhaave syndrome (BS) is a spontaneous esophageal perforation which carries high mortality. Surgical treatment is well established, but the development of interventional endoscopy has proposed new therapies. We expose our experience in a Gastrointestinal and Endoscopy Unit. With a retrospective, observational, open-label, single center, consecutive case series. All patients diagnosed with BS who were managed in our center were included. Treated conservatively, endoscopically or surgically, according to their clinical condition and lesion presentation. Fourteen patients were included. Ten were treated with primary surgery. One conservatively. In total, 7/14 patients required an endoscopic treatment. All required metallic stents deployment, 3 cases over-the-scope-clips concomitantly and one case a novel technique an internal drain. 6/7 cases endoscopically treated achieved complete esophageal healing. In conclusion, endoscopy is an useful tool at all stages BS management: difficult diagnosis, primary treatment in selected patients and as salvage when surgery fails. With mortality rates and outcomes comparables to surgery.

Abstract Numerous rodent studies have evaluated the effects of a maternal high-fat diet (HFD) on later in life susceptibility to Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) with varying results. Our aim was to quantitatively synthesize the available data on effects of maternal HFD around gestation on offspring’s body mass, body fat, plasma leptin, glucose, insulin, lipids and systolic blood pressure (SBP). Literature was screened and summary estimates of the effect of maternal HFD on outcomes were calculated by using fixed- or random-effects models. 362 effect sizes from 68 studies together with relevant moderators were collected. We found that maternal HFD is statistically associated with higher body fat, body weight, leptin, glucose, insulin and triglycerides levels, together with increased SBP in offspring later in life. Our analysis also revealed non-significant overall effect on offspring’s HDL-cholesterol. A main source of variation among studies emerged from rat strain and lard-based diet type. Strain and sex -specific effects on particular data subsets were detected. Recommendations are suggested for future research in the field of developmental programming of the MetS. Despite significant heterogeneity, our meta-analysis confirms that maternal HFD had long-term metabolic effects in offspring.

Abstract Background Globally, snake envenomation is a well-known cause of death and morbidity. In many cases of snakebite, myonecrosis, dermonecrosis, hemorrhage and neurotoxicity are present. Some of these symptoms may be provoked by the envenomation itself, but others are secondary effects of the produced oxidative stress that enhances the damage produced by the venom toxins. The only oxidative stress effect known in blood is the change in oxidation number of Fe (from ferrous to ferric) in hemoglobin, generating methemoglobin but not in other macromolecules. Currently, the effects of the overproduction of methemoglobin derived from snake venom are not extensively recorded. Therefore, the present study aims to describe the oxidative stress induced by Crotalus molossus nigrescens venom using erythrocytes. Methods Human erythrocytes were washed and incubated with different Crotalus molossus nigrescens venom concentrations (0–640 μg/mL). After 24 h, the hemolytic activity was measured followed by attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, non-denaturing PAGE, conjugated diene and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances determination. Results Low concentrations of venom (40 μg/mL). This substance is not degraded by proteases present in the venom. By infrared spectroscopy, starting in 80 μg/mL, we observed changes in bands that are associated with protein damage (1660 and 1540 cm−1) and lipid peroxidation (2960, 2920 and 1740 cm−1). Lipid peroxidation was confirmed by conjugated diene and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance determination, in which differences were observed between the control and erythrocytes treated with venom. Conclusions Crotalus molossus nigrescens venom provokes hemolysis and oxidative stress, which induces methemoglobin formation, loss of protein structure and lipid peroxidation.

Dermatology - Abstract
Low-dose X-ray radiotherapy to treat tinea capitis during childhood is a well-known risk factor for scalp basal cell carcinomas (BCCs). Post-radiotherapy BCCs are often multiple, and it has been suggested that they display more aggressive features. Our main objective was to study the clinicopathological aspects of post-radiotherapy BCCs to evaluate their biological behaviour and identify features that may differ from other BCCs.We performed an observational, retrospective study assessing multiple clinical and pathological characteristics of patients with post-radiotherapy BCCs.We studied 96 patients with 427 post-radiotherapy scalp BCCs. Post-radiotherapy BCCs were often multiple (median of 4 lesions/patient, ranging from 1 to 54). Significant comorbidities included a high incidence of thyroid disease and meningiomas. Recurrences were observed in 23% of patients, but there may be confounding factors, such as referral bias, heterogenous treatment modalities and occurrence of new tumours due to field effect. We found a high incidence of infundibulocystic BCCs (in 14.6% of patients and corresponding to 5.4% of the total number of tumours), trichoblastomas (5.2%) and neurofibromas of the scalp (10%).This study is consistent with the occurrence of multiple lesions (sometimes numerous) and a relatively high tendency for recurrence in post-radiotherapy BCCs, as suggested by previous studies. We also found a high incidence of the infundibulocystic variant and a higher risk of follicular tumours and neurofibromas, which suggests that radiotherapy may influence the type of differentiation of BCCs and contribute to induce neoplasms of different cell lines.

- Abstract
Polypharmacy and multimorbidity are common in older adults but has not been well studied in the urogynecologic patient population. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of polypharmacy and multimorbidity in a diverse outpatient urogynecologic population and to examine whether polypharmacy and/or multimorbidity were associated with lower urinary tract symptoms, pelvic organ prolapse, defecatory distress, and/or female sexual dysfunction. This is a secondary analysis of a dual-center cross-sectional study of new patients presenting for evaluation of pelvic floor disorders at 2 urban academic outpatient urogynecology clinics. Baseline demographics and clinical characteristics were obtained from the electronic medical record. Validated surveys were administered to determine severity of lower urinary tract symptoms (Overactive Bladder Validated 8-Question Screener, Urogenital Distress Inventory-6), pelvic floor dysfunction (Pelvic Organ Prolapse Distress Inventory-6, Colorectal-Anal Distress Inventory-8), and sexual dysfunction (6-item Female Sexual Function Index). Standard statistical techniques were used. One hundred ninety-seven women with mean age 58.8 years (SD, 13.4 years) were included, and most were of minority race/ethnicity (Black, 34.0%; Hispanic, 21.8%). The majority of participants met criteria for polypharmacy (58.4%) and multimorbidity (85.8%), with a mean prescription number of 6.5 (SD, ± 4.9) and mean number of medical comorbidities of 4.9 (SD, ± 3.3). Polypharmacy and multimorbidity were significantly associated with higher CRADI-8 scores. Specifically, polypharmacy was associated with straining with bowel movements and painful stools, whereas multimorbidity was associated with incomplete emptying and fecal urgency. There was no significant association between polypharmacy and multimorbidity with urinary symptoms, prolapse, or sexual dysfunction.Polypharmacy and multimorbidity are common in the urogynecologic population. There is a relationship between greater defecatory distress and polypharmacy and multimorbidity.

- Abstract

- Abstract

Introduction: Population aging and the increased number of chronic diseases push the healthcare systems to design and implement new strategies to improve the quality of services. These strategies require investment in ICT tools, promotion of patient empowerment in the management of their disease and a better integration of health and social care services. Osakidetza Basque Health Services has implemented and scale-up the structured and standard corporate KronikON programme, target for individual empowerment of the multimorbid patient and their caregivers.Aims, Objectives, Theory or Methods: The aim of this structured and standard corporate, on and offline, programme is together with the patient and/or caregiver to explore the latter's knowledge of the pathologies that mulktimorbid patient suffers from, and detect which are the areas that need to be improved. This program has incorporated recently a session target to informal caregivers, oriented to education and empowerment in care and self-care. It seeks to improve their health through, self assessment, the acquisition of information, skills and tools necessary for proper self-management and early detection of situations that require support resources. Highlights or Results or Key Findings: In Kronik ON programme informal caregivers new session, is focused to explaine what it is to be a caregiver, signs and symptoms of caregiver overload, will be shared self-care recommendations, detected the needs and make awareness of existing services and/or resources for caregiver support. Throughout the session, the following contents will be addressed: (i) what it is to be a caregiver; (ii) information on overload, how it manifests itself, what causes it, recommendations for prevention; (iii) recommendations on life habits for self-care; (iv) symptoms and warning signs to take into account to control the situation and what not to forget, (v) information on health and social resources and support services available for caregivers and (vi) the self-assessment tool for identifing the overload. All the materials developed are available in Osakidetza health systema and online for all the citizen in the School of Health of Osakidetza (""Osasun Eskola"") website. https://www.osakidetza.euskadi.eus/kronikon-programa/-/persona-cuidadora/ Conclusions: Kronik ON programme offers attention to both conditions: patient and caregiver, empowering the self-management of the health of both, sharing tools, knowledge and skills to take care of themselves. Care that directed to caregiver is fundamental for the prevention and improvement of the caregiver's and dependent person's state of health.Implications for applicability/transferability, sustainability, and limitations: The structured Kronik ON Program is a corporative program of Osakidetza Basque Health Service system multimorbid patient pathway focused to empower multimorbid patient. The new session developed by a multidisciplinary team composed specially by nurses from seven Integrated Healthcare Organizations (OSIs) of Osakidetza, will be offered to caregivers of these multimorbid patients from the Basque Health System. Educational materials are available in the health system as well as a trainee course for all healthcare professionals.

- Abstract
Biofoundries are highly automated facilities that enable the rapid and efficient design, build, test, and learn cycle of biomanufacturing and engineering biology, which is applicable to both research and industrial production. However, developing a biofoundry platform can be expensive and time consuming. A biofoundry should grow organically, starting from a basic platform but with a vision for automation, equipment interoperability, and efficiency. By thinking about strategies early in the process through process planning, simulation, and optimization, bottlenecks can be identified and resolved. Here, we provide a survey of technological solutions in biofoundries and their advantages and limitations. We explore possible pathways towards the creation of a functional, early-phase biofoundry, and strategies towards long-term sustainability.
