Technology analysis focuses on technology that is a complex system formed by different elements given by incremental and radical innovations to satisfy needs, achieve goals and/or solve problems of users to take advantage of important opportunities or to cope with consequential environmental threats. This study suggests a methods of inquiry, called multiple working hypotheses (MWHs), for technology analysis that consider the development, prior to research, of different hypotheses concerning the origin and evolution of technology, which are likely due to several causes, not just one. The MWHs presented here are categorized in traditional hypotheses, such as demand for technology hypothesis, Induced-innovation hypothesis, learning by doing hypothesis, learning via diffusion hypothesis, specialization via scale hypothesis, disadvantage of beginning hypothesis, path-dependence hypothesis, competitive substitution hypothesis, predator-prey hypothesis, and modern hypotheses such as killer technology hypothesis, parasite technologies hypothesis. Scholars of technology studies should consider all suggested hypotheses for technology analysis, also considering the possibility that none of them are correct and that some new explanations may emerge in more and more complex and turbulent environment.Keywords. Recognizing the practical need to control the cutting process, leading firms in the high-tech market began to offer software products that, in the automatic mode, were said to be able to calculate the optimal cutting mode. Currently, the most advanced technology is called iMachining, which means intelligent Machining. The article presents an analysis of the control, automatically designed in the iMachining Solid CAM module, for machining a test part, the contour of which is formed by two straight circular arcs of a circle. It is shown that when designing control, geometric criteria are used that are associated with the path of shaping, so stabilization of the cutting process is not achieved. A control design method is proposed based on the results of simulation the Material Removal Rate (MRR), which allows stabilizing the cutting process., Fishbone diagram is a graphical technique to show the several causes of a specific event. Fishbone diagram is applied here as a novel method of graphical representation to identify, explore and analyse the sources of innovation and especially general purpose technologies (GPTs). Firstly, the study here shows the driving forces of GPTs, such as: higher democratisation, high investment in R&D, etc. Secondly, these drivers of GPTs and in general of new technology are systematised within fishbone diagrams for technological analysis. Some examples are illustrated by applying the fishbone diagram to specific GPTs, such as steam engine and information and communication technologies (ICTs). Overall, then, fishbone diagram seems to be an appropriate and general technique of graphical representation for the technological analysis and foresight of path-breaking innovation in society.

Safety in human-robot collaborative manufacturing is ensured by various types of safety systems that help to avoid collisions and limit impact forces to the acceptable level in a case of collisions. Recently, active vision-based safety systems have gained momentum due to their affordable price (e.g. off-the-shelf RGB or depth cameras and projectors), flexible installation and easy tailoring. However, these systems have not been widely adopted and standardized. The vision-based commercial products can only be found in a limited number. In this work, we review the recent methods in vision-based technologies applied in human-robot interaction and/or collaboration scenarios, and provide a technology analysis of these. The aim of this review is to provide a comparative analysis of the current readiness level of vision based safety systems for industrial requirements and highlight the important components that are missing. The factors that are analysed as such are use case flexibility, system speed and level of collaboration. publishedVersion

Understanding and anticipating the evolution of technologies is an increasingly complex task attributable to the interdisciplinarity of the technology and the explosion of information about the research and patent activity. By combining the capabilities of tech-mining in identifying and in highlighting trends, weak signals, with those of semantic-TRIZ (Teoriya Resheniya Izobreatatelskikh Zadatch– Theory of Inventive Problem Solving) in identifying the functions, its causes and effects, a better understanding of the trends may be obtained in a shorter time. An interesting trend in the use of graphene in cathode materials, as well as its applications, mainly to enhance the conductivity and the discharge and recharge of the Li–air battery, has been quickly assessed as a result of the combined techniques. Another two cases, the increased presence of nanostructures in cathodes and the emergence of LIFePO4in the lithium–ion batteries have been also analysed in a short time. The results may predict the good possibilities of the combination of these two evolving techniques. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Preliminary use-wear analysis of chipped stone artefacts from Lepenski Vir and Padina (Serbia) Conference Paper Full-text available November 2019 Download View more Description Lepenski Vir, located in the Iron Gates region (SE Serbia), is a well-known site for its monumental sculptures and numerous trapezoidal houses dated to the Mesolithic/Early Neolithic period, c. 6200-5900 cal BC. Absolute dates indicate that prehistoric communities have been inhabiting the site in wider chronological span, c. 9400-7600 cal BC, but they hadn´t left extensive material remains. Detailed raw material and techno-typological analysis of knapped stone industry were undertaken by Kozłowski and Kozłowski (1984). However, recent revisions of Lepenski Vir material and documentation have required a new examination of the chipped stone artefacts and the implementation of advanced methods. New analysis included a vast study of the techniques used for knapping, as well as crossing the raw material and technotypological data with the contexts of the artefact origin and the use-wear analysis. The results drew attention to houses 32, 35 and 36 regarding the quantity and technological characteristics of grey flint artifacts. Our attention here is drawn to explore the activities performed in the house 32, where the only one retouched artefact – a perforator was uncovered while other stone remains indicate that grey flint was knapped while blanks of Balkan and grey flint with white spots were stored and used. Use-wear analysis of the proposed sample consisted both from artefacts coming from ashplace but also from house floor was conducted and indicates variety of used materials and activities, and also implies the presence of thermal stress on some of the artefacts. Interesting is that some of the tools have traces of a co

Blood pressure measuring/monitoring devices (BPMs) are one of the most popular home health diagnostic tools. A contemporary line of these products available to consumers today has considerable range of variety and functionality. The BPMs evolved into their present form from the 18th century sphygmomanometer, and their design went through a number of innovations and improvements, a process still continuing today. The first sphygmomanometer patent was issued in 1855, a practical method established only in 1896, and since then over 1,300 patents of relevance have been granted by USPTO. Analysis reveals that number of patents over time follows a cubic curve that can be broken into three temporal segments (pre-1962, 1962-1986, 1986-present), related to specific technological breakthroughs. The approach presented in this paper blends statistical analysis (e.g., patent frequency over time) with a user satisfaction index. Such index captures how closely a metric based on key functional characteristics of patented devices follows an ideal solution, satisfying all user expectations, and provides an insight into the size of the gap between consumer needs and current technology. Combining it with technological progress curve can provide a clear picture of the evolution and developments overtime in BPMs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

123. Invention property-function network analysis of patents: a case of silicon-based thin film solar cells.

- Abstract
Technology analysis is a process which uses textual analysis to detect trends in technological innovation. Co-word analysis (CWA), a popular method for technology analysis, encompasses (1) defining a set of keyword or key phrase patterns which are represented in technology-dependent terms, (2) generating a network that codifies the relations between occurrences of keywords or key phrases, and (3) identifying specific trends from the network. However, defining the set of keyword or key phrase patterns heavily relies on effort of experts, who may be expensive or unavailable. Furthermore defining keyword or key phrase patterns of new or emerging technology areas may be a difficult task even for experts. To solve the limitation in CWA, this research adopts a property-function based approach. The property is a specific characteristic of a product, and is usually described using adjectives; the function is a useful action of a product, and is usually described using verbs. Properties and functions represent the innovation concepts of a system, so they show innovation directions in a given technology. The proposed methodology automatically extracts properties and functions from patents using natural language processing. Using properties and functions as nodes, and co-occurrences as links, an invention property-function network (IPFN) can be generated. Using social network analysis, the methodology analyzes technological implications of indicators in the IPFN. Therefore, without predefining keyword or key phrase patterns, the methodology assists experts to more concentrate on their knowledge services that identify trends in technological innovation from patents. The methodology is illustrated using a case study of patents related to silicon-based thin film solar cells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: This paper examines the potential of integrating future-oriented technology analysis (FTA) with risk assessment methodologies and tools, with the aim of developing more proactive risk assessments and also systematically including risk assessment in future-oriented technology analysis. The similarities and development challenges of foresight, Technology Analysis (TA) and risk assessment methodologies are discussed in the light of the empirical material gathered from projects performed at VTT. Among the projects are IRRIIS project focusing on risk assessment of critical infrastructures, INNORISK project aiming at managing opportunities, risk and uncertainties in new business creation and a project related to the climate change (CES). The case projects are positioned according to their important design dimensions (informative vs. instrumental outcomes; consensual vs. diverse future perspectives, extensive vs. exclusive stakeholder involvement, and autonomous vs. fixed management). The common and complementary features of FTA and risk assessment are discussed, suggesting new ways to evolve the modular design when integrating FTA and risk assessment methodologies and tools. There has been increasing recognition of the importance and benefits to society of social inclusion and the full participation of disabled people. Many countries have also enacted legislation aimed at removing discrimination against disabled people. Removing barriers to full participation by disabled people will require the development of new assistive technology systems and improved information and distribution systems for existing assistive technologies. This will require an effective and ongoing dialogue between the disabled end-user community, social services, the clinical rehabilitation services, and the professional engineering disciplines involved in the development, provision, assessment, and ongoing support for assistive technology. To support this dialogue there is a need for common terminology, concepts, and definitions, embedded within a single, unified model framework. This paper presents the Comprehensive Assistive Technology (CAT) model, which was designed to meet this need. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We propose a new conceptual model for understanding technology evolution that highlights dynamic and highly interdependent relationships among multiple technologies. We argue that, instead of considering technologies in isolation, technology evolution is best viewed as a dynamic system or ecosystem that includes a variety of interrelated technologies. By considering the interdependent nature of technology evolution, we identify three roles that technologies play within a technology ecosystem. These roles are components, products and applications, and support and infrastructure. Technologies within an ecosystem interact through these roles and impact each others’ evolution. We also classify types of interactions between technology roles, which we term paths of influence. We demonstrate the use of our proposed model through examples of wireless networking (Wi-Fi) technologies and a business mini-case on the digital music industry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this review we summarized literatures about biomechanical researches in kayaking. Biomechanical methods provide data on a number of analytical techniques and kayak moving posture for coaches and athletes. 3-D kinematic analysis, on-water dynamic analysis and surface electromyography measurement are the most common methods through which we can assess and describe effects of paddling techniques and training. The purposes of numerous current studies are to identify the factors which restrict kayak performance, make improvement of techniques, prevent and correct mistakes, and develop new type of practical instrument. As a result, we found that although researchers realized the importance of kayaking balance ability and core stability, but balance ability and core stability haven’t been considered yet in mechanics analysis and instrument design fields, nor have the research of muscle working status under unsteady state. Our findings through this literature review reveal important directions for further study in the biomechanical researches in kayaking.

For construction of monastery of El Escorial main altarpiece at end of the 16th century, it was necessary to build an important mill to cut the marble. This mill was located next to a flour mill to take advantage of its hydraulic energy. Over time, both buildings were abandoned and came to be called "Molino Caido". There is very little documentary evidence and physical remains of these mills. For this reason, the architectural and technological reconstruction has been very difficult and required the following exhaustive analyzes: 1. Sawing and polishing technology analysis in the Renaissance; 2. Transcription and documentary analysis of data that still exist of the mills; 3. Analysis and investigation of mills physical remains; 4. Comparison between documentary data and physical remains; 5. Historical analysis of the mills drawings; 6. Technological state and constructive of the time. Based on this previous data analysis, this work presents constructive and technological characteristics and a detailed graphic reconstruction, of the marble mill, that is consistent with the existing remains and documentary evidence.

In this article, a state of art-review is made on what we understand by experimentation and what implications this concept has for archaeology and the study of prehistoric artifacts. Ceramics has been a field where experimentation has burst in with force, due to its potential for formulating hypotheses and contrasting them through the construction of current references. This powerful development has been made possible by the long way travelled by experimental studies in other hard materials, such as lithic and bone, in order to elaborate working instruments. In a second part, a proposal for an experimental programme is presented, aimed at exploring analytically the traces of manufacture and the general state of surface treatment resulting from the work and the tools used. This proposal, the results of which will be the subject of future publications, is at the development stage.
