116. Insights, attitudes, and perceptions about asthma and its treatment: findings from a multinational survey of patients from Latin America

Abstract

Background: In 2011 the Latin America Asthma Insight and Management (LA AIM) survey explored the realities of living with asthma. We investigated perception, knowledge, and attitudes related to asthma among Latin American asthma patients. Methods: Asthma patients aged ≥12 years from four Latin American countries (Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Venezuela) and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico responded to questions during face-to-face interviews. A sample size of 2,169 patients (approximately 400 patients/location) provided an accurate representation of asthma patients’ opinions. Questions probed respondents’ views on topics such as levels of asthma control, frequency and duration of exacerbations, and current and recent use of asthma medications. Results: A total of 2,169 adults or parents of children with asthma participated in the LA AIM survey. At least 20% of respondents experienced symptoms every day or night or most days or nights. Although 60% reported their disease as well or completely controlled, only 8% met guideline criteria for well-controlled asthma. 47% of respondents reported episodes when their asthma symptoms were more frequent or severe than normal, and 44% reported seeking acute care for asthma in the past year. Asthma patients in Latin America overestimated their degree of asthma control. Conclusions: The LA AIM survey demonstrated the discrepancy between patient perception of asthma control and guideline-mandated criteria. Additional education is required to teach patients that, by more closely following asthma management strategies outlined by current guidelines more patients can achieve adequate asthma control.

117. Mesoproterozoic intraplate magmatic ‘barcode’ record of the Angola portion of the Congo Craton: Newly dated magmatic events at 1505 and 1110 Ma and implications for Nuna (Columbia) supercontinent reconstructions

Abstract

In the Angola portion of the Congo Craton, the only Proterozoic large igneous province (LIP) dated prior to this study was the 1380–1370 Ma (Kunene Intrusive Complex and related units). U–Pb TIMS ages on baddeleyite from dolerite sills and gabbro-noritic dykes, has revealed two additional Mesoproterozoic intraplate events: at ca. 1505 and ca. 1110 Ma, that are each proposed to be part of the plumbing system for LIPs. The identification of these three Mesoproterozoic magmatic events (ca. 1505, 1380, and 1110 Ma) represent an initial magmatic ‘barcode’ for this portion of Congo Craton (and formerly connected São Francisco Craton), which can be compared with the magmatic ‘barcode’ record of other blocks to identify former nearest neighbors in the Precambrian supercontinent Nuna (also known as Columbia).Specifically, a 1502 ± 5 Ma U–Pb TIMS baddeleyite age has been obtained for the prominent Humpata dolerite sill which is part of a wider sill province in SW Angola portion of the Congo Craton. The combined presence of both 1505 Ma and 1380 Ma magmatism in the Congo–São Francisco reconstructed craton is a match with similar ages published for two intraplate magmatic provinces in northern Siberia and suggests a nearest-neighbor relationship in the supercontinent Nuna in which northern Siberia is juxtaposed adjacent to the western São Francisco portion of the reconstructed São Francisco–Congo Craton.In addition, a precise U–Pb TIMS baddeleyite age of 1110 ± 2.5 Ma was obtained for a prominent NNW–NNE trending gabbro-noritic (GN) dyke swarm in southeastern Angola, but this age is currently unknown in Siberia suggesting that the breakup of Congo–São Francisco Craton from Siberia happened earlier, perhaps in association with the 1380 Ma event. Abstract

The CD5 molecule is expressed on T cells and, at a lower density, on a minor B cell subset (CD5+ B cells). The pan-B Ag CD72 was recently identified as the CD5 counterstructure, and several data suggest the involvement of this ligand pair in T-B cell cognate interaction. However, the functional role of CD5 and CD72 molecules within the B cell compartment is still unknown. In this work we studied umbilical cord blood CD5+ B cells (B-1a), adult splenic CD5- B cells (B-2), and CD5+ B cells from patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Flow cytometry analysis and proliferation assays were used to determine 1) the ability of B-1a and B-2 cells to coexpress functionally relevant counterligands other than CD5 and CD72, and 2) the signaling capacity of CD5 and CD72 in terms of B cell activation and proliferation. To this purpose, freshly isolated or preactivated normal and neoplastic B cells were cultured with agonistic anti-CD5 or anti-CD72 mAbs in the presence or the absence of cytokines equipped with B cell activity. Our data demonstrate that CD5 and CD72 molecules are coexpressed with other ligand pairs usually involved in T-B cell cognate interaction on B-1a cells, but not on B-2 cells. CD5 and/or CD72 engagement delivers critical costimulatory signals in B-1a, B-2, and B cells from patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, but with different requirements and patterns. Besides suggesting the potential involvement of B-1a lymphocytes in B-B cell interactions during T-independent B cell responses, our results indicate that CD5 and CD72 counterstructures play a functional role in the B cell compartment.

Abstract

A análise dos perfis de elementos incompatíveis imóveis em eclogitos do Maciço de Bragança permitiu dividir estas rochas em três grupos (A, B e C). As rochas dos grupos B e C correspondem a eclogitos granulitizados que, frequentemente, contêm veios "dioríticos". Os dados geoquímicos disponíveis revelam que os materiais dos veios e os eclogitos hospedeiros têm concentrações muito semelhantes de elementos incompatíveis "imóveis", enquanto há diferenças significativas no que se refere a elementos móveis. Assim, é improvável que os veios possam representar magmas dioríticos gerados por fusão parcial dos eclogitos hospedeiros. Os veios "dioríticos" são interpretados neste trabalho como produtos de actividade metassomática que afectou os eclogitos; o metassomatismo terá sido induzido por fluidos que terão emanado dos gnaisses encaixantes duranto o metamorfismo prógrado da descompressão. Este episódio metasomático terá causado reajustamentos isotópicos, o que explicaria as contradições aparentes entre os dados geocronológicos obtidos nos eclogitos.
