101. Determination of the Tc distribution for 1000 Transition Edge Sensors

Abstract

The ZIP detectors deployed in the CDMS II experiment utilize phonon sensors comprising W Transition Edge Sensors (TESs). In order to ensure uniform collection of the athermal phonon signal the TESs are dispersed uniformly on one side of a 1 cm thick, 3 inch diameter, disk. Each quadrant contains 1036 TESs connected in parallel to one series-array SQUID amplifier. The initial superconducting transition temperatures of these TESs tend to be too high for our requirements, and substantial gradients make the operation of the detectors difficult. Hence our implementation of Fe-56 ion implantation, as reported at the previous LTD meeting, to reduce in a controlled manner the transition temperature. However, the successful implementation of this ion-implantation scheme requires accurate knowledge of the initial transition temperature of each TES in a given quadrant. We report on our approaches and techniques employed to address the issue of determining the initial Tc distribution.

Abstract

The most recent CDMS data run (Run 20) was the first run in which multiple ZIP detectors were deployed. Three Si (0.100 kg each) and 3 Ge (0.250 kg each) ZIPs were run with the goals of fully testing such a configuration as well as measuring the γ, β, and n rates simultaneously with Ge and Si detectors. Calibration with γ and n sources established the bulk electron recoil leakage into the neutron band to be less than 0.2%. Low background data taken during the summer of 2000 produced a simultaneous measurement of the muon coincident neutron background with Si and Ge detectors.

Abstract

The Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS) employs detectors which are capable of simultaneously measuring the ionization and phonon energies deposited by a particle collision. These detectors are 1-cm-thick, 7-cm-diameter crystals of either germanium or silicon with a thin film of aluminum and tungsten patterned on the surface. This presentation discusses the testing regimen that a typical CDMS detector undergoes before it gets approval for final installation at the CDMS II deep side in Soudan, MN which should be coming online within a year. Now that our technology is relatively stable, the main focus of our test facilities is to provide quality control for the mass production of our detectors. First, the critical temperatures of the tungsten and other basic quantities are measured in preparation for iron implantation, which will bring the Tc down to the desired range (70 mK). Abstract

In September 1999, the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS) completed a nine month run with the first generation detectors (0.5 kg of germanium BLIPs sensing thermal phonons and ionization). The data acquired in this run significantly decrease the upper limits on WIMP interaction in germanium by a factor 2.5 to 10 depending on the mass region and begin to probe supersymmetry. The results are however strongly inconsistent with the claims of the DAMA experiment.

Abstract

The Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS) employs Ge and Si detectors to search for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) via their elastic-scattering interactions with nuclei while discriminating against interactions of background particles. CDMS data, accounting for the neutron background, give limits on the spin-independent WIMP-nucleon elastic-scattering cross section that exclude unexplored parameter space above 10 GeV c-2 WIMP mass and. at > 75% CL. the entire 3σ allowed region for the WIMP signal reported by the DAMA experiment.

Abstract

The Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS) employs low-temperature Ge and Si detectors to search for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) via their elastic-scattering interactions with nuclei while discriminating against interactions of background particles. For recoil energies above 10 keV, events due to background photons are rejected with >99.9% efficiency, and surface events are rejected with >95% efficiency. The estimate of the background due to neutrons is based primarily on the observation of multiple-scatter events that should all be neutrons. Data selection is determined primarily by examining calibration data and vetoed events. Resulting efficiencies should be accurate to about 10%. Results of CDMS data from 1998 and 1999 with a relaxed fiducial-volume cut (resulting in 15.8 kg-days exposure on Ge) are consistent with an earlier analysis with a more restrictive fiducial-volume cut. Twenty-three WIMP candidate events are observed, but these events are consistent with a background from neutrons in all ways tested. Resulting limits on the spin-independent WIMP-nucleon elastic-scattering cross-section exclude unexplored parameter space for WIMPs with masses between 10-70 GeV c^{-2}. These limits border, but do not exclude, parameter space allowed by supersymmetry models and accelerator constraints. Results are compatible with some regions reported as allowed at 3-sigma by the annual-modulation measurement of the DAMA collaboration. However, under the assumptions of standard WIMP interactions and a standard halo, the results are incompatible with the DAMA most likely value at >99.9% CL, and are incompatible with the model-independent annual-modulation signal of DAMA at 99.99% CL in the asymptotic limit., 40 pages, 49 figures (4 in color), submitted to Phys. Abstract

The CDMS experiment utilizes Ge and Si detectors operating at 20 mK to search for the Dark Matter of the Universe hypothesized to exist in the form of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs). In early 2000, CDMS set the most competitive exclusion limit for scalar-interaction WIMPs in the Stanford Underground Facility (SUF). A new search (CDMS II) is now commencing with several improvements: a deep-site facility in the Soudan mine, Minnesota; and the detector technology has been further improved to aid in the rejection of surface-electron (β) events. A new generation of detectors, sensitive to the initial athermal phonon flux from a particle event, have been in operation for the past year at Stanford's shallow site and are ready for installation at the deep site.

Abstract

Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) are a strong candidate for the Cold Dark Matter of the Universe. CDMS-II is a direct-search WIMP search experiment, operating at 50 mK and housed at the Soudan mine, Minnesota. The 250 gram Ge detectors utilize athermal phonon sensors where tungsten transition edge sensors are operated in negative electrothermal feedback. The search at Soudan is ongoing with an expected final reach of CDMS-II by the end of 2008 of a WIMP-nucleon cross-section sensitivity of 2.1 x10-44 cm2, at a WIMP mass of 60 GeV/c2. To proceed further, we have proposed the SuperCDMS program.

Abstract

An x-ray microcalorimeter consists of an absorber and a thermometer connected to each other, and to a heat sink, via well defined thermal conductances. The standard theoretical derivation of energy resolution treats the absorber and thermometer as point elements that are internally isothermal. In reality, the finite size and internal diffusivity of the absorber and thermometer prevents these elements from instantly achieving a uniform temperature, leading to a variation in observed pulse shapes as a function of the interaction’s position within the absorber. These variations result in a distortion of the detector response and a subsequent degradation of the energy resolution. This paper presents diffusivity measurements for x-ray microcalorimeters fabricated at the NASA/GSFC. Using a diffusion model we developed, we show quantitatively how a 2eV Gaussian response is distorted into a non-Gaussian profile roughly 12eV wide at an energy of 6keV for an absorber diffusivity of 104μm2∕μs. Abstract

The superconducting transition temperature of more than 30 thin-film tungsten samples was measured using a dilution refrigerator. The samples were fabricated using a 99.999% pure tungsten target and a dc magnetron sputtering system. Individual films were then doped with metal impurity ions using an accurate ion implantation technique. The effect of the metal–ion doping on the superconducting transition temperature was measured for samples with superconducting transitions in the range of 40–150 mK. Magnetic dopant species including Ni, Co, and Fe resulted in suppressed values of the tungsten Tc. The suppression was linear with increasing dopant concentration, for concentrations up to tens of ppm. For higher concentrations of magnetic atoms, the data are consistent with the Abrikosov–Gor'kov theory [Soviet Physics JETP 12, 1243 (1961)] modified by antiferromagnetic impurity–impurity interactions.
