103. A proposal for a technology-assisted approach to wildlife management in Singapore.

Abstract

The long-tailed macaque (Macaca fascicularis fascicularis) is a non-human primate species that is native to Singapore. From mid-2020, the Nanyang Technological University campus witnessed a sharp increase in the number of human--macaque encounters. In this article, we will first identify a set of technological tools that we have developed to guide decision- and policy-making on the wildlife management front and mitigate human--macaque conflict. Thereafter, we will describe how we applied these tools to the activity log cataloguing the macaque activity on campus and offer an analysis of the trends in macaque behaviour that may be shared with members of the public and affected residents. Among the results that will be discussed are the following: a significant decline in the number of macaque sightings at Student Residences over the weekend, a majority of the reported macaque sightings occurring in the early evening, no significant difference in the damage and proximity scores over time, and a trend in observed macaque activity at critical sleep-relevant time intervals and areas on campus. We hope that our approach will promote, through an improved and data-driven understanding of macaque behavioural trends, technology-assisted decision-making and a more harmonious co-existence between humans and macaques on campus and in Singapore. Abstract

Background: Colonoscopy is a mainstay to detect premalignant neoplastic lesions in the colon. Real-time Artificial Intelligence (AI)-aided colonoscopy purportedly improves the polyp detection rate, especially for small flat lesions. The aim of this study is to evaluate the performance of real-time AI-aided colonoscopy in the detection of colonic polyps. Methods: A prospective single institution cohort study was conducted in Singapore. All real-time AI-aided colonoscopies, regardless of indication, performed by specialist-grade endoscopists were anonymously recorded from July to September 2021 and reviewed by 2 independent authors (FHK, JL). Sustained detection of an area by the program was regarded as a "hit". Histology for the polypectomies were reviewed to determine adenoma detection rate (ADR). Individual endoscopist's performance with AI were compared against their baseline performance without AI endoscopy. Results: A total of 24 (82.8%) endoscopists participated with 18 (62.1%) performing ≥ 5 AI-aided colonoscopies. Of the 18, 72.2% (n = 13) were general surgeons. During that 3-months period, 487 "hits" encountered in 298 colonoscopies. Polypectomies were performed for 51.3% and 68.4% of these polypectomies were adenomas on histology. The post-intervention median ADR was 30.4% was higher than the median baseline polypectomy rate of 24.3% (p = 0.02). Of the adenomas excised, 14 (5.6%) were sessile serrated adenomas. Of those who performed ≥ 5 AI-aided colonoscopies, 13 (72.2%) had an improvement of ADR compared to their polypectomy rate before the introduction of AI, of which 2 of them had significant improvement. Conclusions: Real-time AI-aided colonoscopy have the potential to improved ADR even for experienced endoscopists and would therefore, improve the quality of colonoscopy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

116. Features of lexical richness in children���s books: Comparisons with child-directed speech

Abstract

Access to children’s books via shared reading may be a particularly rich source of linguistic input in the early years. To understand how exposure to book language supports children’s learning, it is important to identify how book language differs to everyday conversation. We created a picture book corpus from 160 texts commonly read to children aged 0-5 years (around 320,000 words). We first quantified how the language of children’s books differs from childdirected speech (compiled from 10 corpora in the CHILDES UK database, around 3.8 million words) on measures of lexical richness (diversity, density, sophistication), part of speech distributions, and structural properties. We also identified the words occurring in children’s books that are most uniquely representative of book language. We found that children’s book language is lexically denser, more lexically diverse, and comprises a larger proportion of rarer word types compared to child-directed speech. Nouns and adjectives are more common in book language whereas pronouns are more common in child-directed speech. Book words are more structurally complex in relation to both number of phonemes and morphological structure. They are also later acquired, more abstract, and more emotionally arousing than the words more common in child-directed speech. Written language provides unique linguistic input even in the pre-school years, well before children can read for themselves.

Abstract

© Evaporative self-assembly of semiconducting polymers is a low-cost route to fabricating micrometer and nanoscale features for use in organic and flexible electronic devices. However, in most cases, rate is limited by the kinetics of solvent evaporation, and it is challenging to achieve uniformity over length- and time-scales that are compelling for manufacturing scale-up. In this study, we report high-throughput, continuous printing of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) by a modified doctor blading technique with oscillatory meniscus motion - meniscus-oscillated self-assembly (MOSA), which forms P3HT features ∼100 times faster than previously reported techniques. The meniscus is pinned to a roller, and the oscillatory meniscus motion of the roller generates repetitive cycles of contact-line formation and subsequent slip. The printed P3HT lines demonstrate reproducible and tailorable structures: nanometer scale thickness, micrometer scale width, submillimeter pattern intervals, and millimeter-to-centimeter scale coverage with highly defined boundaries. The line width as well as interval of P3HT patterns can be independently controlled by varying the polymer concentration levels and the rotation rate of the roller. Furthermore, grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS) reveals that this dynamic meniscus control technique dramatically enhances the crystallinity of P3HT. KGaA, Weinheim Materials made by directed self-assembly of colloids can exhibit a rich spectrum of optical phenomena, including photonic bandgaps, coherent scattering, collective plasmonic resonance, and wave guiding. The assembly of colloidal particles with spatial selectivity is critical for studying these phenomena and for practical device fabrication. While there are well-established techniques for patterning colloidal crystals, these often require multiple steps including the fabrication of a physical template for masking, etching, stamping, or directing dewetting. Here, the direct-writing of colloidal suspensions is presented as a technique for fabrication of iridescent colloidal crystals in arbitrary 2D patterns. Leveraging the principles of convective assembly, the process can be optimized for high writing speeds (≈600 µm s−1) at mild process temperature (30 °C) while maintaining long-range (cm-scale) order in the colloidal crystals. The crystals exhibit structural color by grating diffraction, and analysis of diffraction allows particle size, relative grain size, and grain orientation to be deduced. The effect of write trajectory on particle ordering is discussed and insights for developing 3D printing techniques for colloidal crystals via layer-wise printing and sintering are provided.

KGaA, Weinheim To translate the exceptional properties of colloidal nanoparticles (NPs) to macroscale geometries, assembly techniques must bridge a 106-fold range of length. Moreover, for successfully attaining a final mechanically robust nanocomposite macroscale material, some of the intrinsic NPs’ properties have to be maintained while minimizing the density of strength-limiting defects. However, the assembly of nanoscale building blocks into macroscopic dimensions, and their effective macroscale properties, are inherently affected by the precision of the conditions required for assembly and emergent flaws including point defects, dislocations, grain boundaries, and cracks. Herein, a direct-write self-assembly technique is used to construct free-standing, millimeter-scale columns comprising spherical iron oxide NPs (15 nm diameter) surface functionalized with oleic acid (OA), which self-assemble into face-centered cubic (FCC) supercrystals in minutes during the direct-writing process. The subsequent crosslinking of OA molecules results in nanocomposites with a maximum strength of 110 MPa and elastic modulus up to 58 GPa. These mechanical properties are interpreted according to the flaw size distribution and are as high as newly engineered platelet-based nanocomposites. The findings indicate a broad potential to create mechanically robust, multifunctional 3D structures by combining additive manufacturing with colloidal assembly.

Abstract

Context and objective: Thyroid autoimmunity has been reported to be associated with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and the SARS-CoV-2 vaccination recently. We report a series of patients who presented with new onset or relapse of Graves' disease-related hyperthyroidism shortly after receiving the SARS-CoV-2 messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccine at a single tertiary institution in Singapore. Methods and results: We describe 12 patients who developed hyperthyroidism within a relatively short interval (median onset, 17 [range, 5-63] days) after receiving the SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccine. The majority were females (11/12) with median age of 35.5 (range, 22-74) years. Six patients had new-onset hyperthyroidism, whereas the other 6 had relapse of previously well-controlled Graves' disease. TSH receptor antibody concentrations ranged from 2.4 to 32 IU/L. The majority of the patients were able to go for the second dose of the vaccine without any further exacerbations. Literature review revealed 21 other similar cases reported from across the world. Conclusion: Our case series provides insight into the characteristics of individuals in whom Graves' disease was triggered by the SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. Clinicians need to be vigilant of precipitation or exacerbation of autoimmune thyroid disorders in predisposed individuals after exposure to the SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. Further epidemiological and mechanistic studies are required to elucidate the possible associations between the SARS-CoV-2 vaccines and the development of thyroid autoimmunity. Abstract

This paper examines the relationship between consumption and wealth in Australia. We find a steady-state relationship between non-durables consumption, labour income and aggregate household wealth for the period 1988-1999. We also find that changes in both non-financial and financial assets have significant but different short-run and long-run effects in dynamic consumption models. Finally, we place our results within the broader empirical literature and examine whether they are consistent with standard theories of consumption.

Abstract

Background Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most aggressive form of glioma. There is growing recognition that mitochondrial metabolism plays a role in cancer development. Metabolic syndrome is a risk factor for several cancers; however, the prevalence in GBM patients in New Zealand (NZ) is unknown. We hypothesized that patients with GBM would show a higher prevalence of metabolic syndrome compared to the general NZ population and that metabolic syndrome may be associated with worsened overall survival (OS) in GBM. Methods We performed a retrospective analysis in 170 patients diagnosed and treated for GBM between 2005 and 2020. Clinical and biochemical data were collected with regard to 5 metabolic criteria. OS was determined from the date of initial surgical diagnosis to the date of death or date of data acquisition. Results Of 170 patients, 31 (18.2%) met the diagnostic criteria for metabolic syndrome. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome in our cohort did not significantly differ from that of the general NZ population. However, OS in patients with metabolic syndrome was significantly worse compared to patients without metabolic syndrome (8.0 vs 13.0 months, P =.016). Patients who received a lower dexamethasone dose had significantly better survival outcomes (15.0 vs 5.0 months, P <.01). Differences in OS did not differ by gender or ethnicity. Conclusions We have shown that metabolic syndrome is associated with reduced OS in a NZ cohort of GBM patients. This finding further strengthens the possibility that a metabolic pathogenesis may underpin GBM. However, prospective clinical trials are needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background: The exact role of laparoscopic liver resection (LLR) in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and underlying liver cirrhosis (LC) is not well defined. In this meta-analysis, both long- and short-term outcomes following LLR versus open liver resection (OLR) were analysed. Methods: PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus and Web of Science databases were searched systematically for randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and propensity-score matched (PSM) studies reporting outcomes of LLR versus OLR of HCC in patients with cirrhosis. Primary outcome was overall survival (OS). This was analysed using one-stage (individual participant data meta-analysis) and two-stage (aggregate data meta-analysis) approaches. Secondary outcomes were operation duration, blood loss, blood transfusion, Pringle manoeuvre utilization, overall and major complications, length of hospital stay (LOHS), 90-day mortality and R0 resection rates. Results: Eleven studies comprising 1618 patients (690 LLR versus 928 OLR) were included for analysis. In the one-stage meta-analysis, an approximately 18.7 per cent lower hazard rate (HR) of death in the LLR group (random effects: HR 0.81, 95 per cent confidence interval [C.I.] 0.68 to 0.96; P=0.018) was observed. Two-stage meta-analysis resulted in a pooled HR of 0.84 (95 per cent C.I. 0.74 to 0.96; P=0.01) in the overall LLR cohort. This indicated a 16-26 per cent reduction in the HR of death for patients with HCC and cirrhosis who underwent LLR. For secondary outcomes, LLR was associated with less blood loss (mean difference [MD] -99 ml, 95 per cent C.I. -182 to -16 ml), reduced overall complications (odds ratio 0.49, 95 per cent C.I. 0.37 to 0.66) and major complications (odds ratio 0.45, 95 per cent C.I. 0.26 to 0.79), and shorter LOHS (MD -3.22 days, 95 per cent C.I. -4.38 to -2.06 days). Conclusion: Laparoscopic resection of HCC in patients with cirrhosis is associated with improved survival and perioperative outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
