- Abstract
Objectives: The cardiac event rate among the countries varies according to ethnicity. Some reports have identified that ischemic heart disease often occurs at a low incidence and is often milder in Japan compared to other countries. Therefore, the present study was designed to determine the clinical significance and prediction for cardiac events in patients who showed ischemic ECG changes during stress myocardial perfusion SPECT.Methods: Among 4,670 registered patients for Japanese-assessment of cardiac event and survival (J-ACCESS) study, patients with conduction abnormality on baseline were excluded and revascularization within 60 days of SPECT study were censored from the prognostic portion of analysis. Stress and rest myocardial perfusion SPECT imaging with (99m)Tc-tetrofosmin were performed and occurrence and nature of cardiac events were investigated at 1, 2 and 3 years after registration. Both PCI and CABG, as well as recurrent angina and non-severe heart failure were classified as soft events. Cardiac death, non-fatal MI and heart failure requiring hospitalization were classified as major cardiac events, and hard events comprised cardiac death and non-fatal MI.Results: A total of 3,125 patients performed exercise (n = 2,383) or vasodilator (n = 742) stress MPI and significant ischemic ECG changes were obtained in 538 during exercise and 35 during vasodilator stress. Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed that the patients with both ischemic ECG changes and reversible perfusion defect on MPI had significantly higher incidence for major cardiac events, such as cardiac death, non-fatal MI and severe heart failure (P = 0.0038), and for cardiac hard events, such as cardiac death and non-fatal MI (P = 0.0028), in exercise stress. Interestingly, patients without reversible perfusion defect showed significantly fewer events despite presence of ischemic ECG changes. Conclusions: Ischemic ECG changes during exercise stress are well associated with higher incidence of cardiac events in patients demonstrated reversible perfusion defect on MPI. The regional distribution and relative frequency of endocrine cells in the gastrointestinal tract of the camel, Camelus bactrianus, were investigated using immunohistochemical methods. Ten types of immunoreactive (IR) endocrine cells were identified in this study. Among these cell types, only serotonin- and somatostatin-IR cells were detected in almost all regions of the gastrointestinal tract. Most of the cell types showed peak density in the pyloric gland region. The others showed restricted distribution: gastrin, cholecystokinin (CCK), motilin, bovine pancreatic polypeptide (BPP), and (gastric) substance P in the stomach; gastrin, CCK, BPP, gastric inhibitory polypeptide (GIP), glucagon, peptide tyrosine tyrosine (PYY) and substance P in the small intestine; and CCK, motilin, BPP, and PYY in the large intestine. Fundamentally the distribution pattern of endocrine cells in the gastrointestinal tract of the camel is similar to that of cattle. The distribution and frequency of endocrine cells in the glandular sac region are the same as those of the cardiac gland. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
AimsTransient atrial fibrillation is a relatively common arrhythmia in the early phase of acute Q-wave myocardial infarction. However, the role of infarction-associated pericarditis on the genesis of atrial fibrillation is controversial. This study was designed to examine the relative importance of infarction-associated pericarditis among other clinical variables on the genesis of transient atrial fibrillation in patients with acute myocardial infarction. Methods and resultsThree hundred and ninety-eight patients with acute Q-wave myocardial infarction were examined carefully by means of auscultation, ECG, two-dimensional echocardiography and haemodynamic measurements. The diagnosis of pericarditis was made on the basis of pericardial rub detected during the first 3 days after admission. At least 0·5mm of PQ-segment depression from a TP segment lasting more than 24h in both limb and precordial leads was considered diagnostic of PQ-segment depression. Atrial fibrillation was present in 76 patients (19%). Sixteen (42%) of 38 patients with PQ-segment depression had atrial fibrillation, whereas 23 (30%) of 77 patients with pericardial rub had atrial fibrillation. Based on ten clinical variables, multivariate analysis was performed to determine the important variables related to the occurrence of atrial fibrillation. PQ-segment depression (chi-square=4·10, P<0·05) was selected with age (chi-square=10·52, P<0·005), the number of left ventricular segments with advanced asynergy (chi-square=7·73, P<0·01) and pericardial effusion (chi-square=7·95, P<0·005) as important factors related to atrial fibrillation. Patients with PQ-segment depression had a significantly higher pulmonary capillary wedge pressure than those without it.ConclusionAmong patients with infarction-associated pericarditis, those with PQ-segment depression represent atrial involvement associated with extensive myocardial damage and hence, PQ-segment depression is one of the clinical signs related to the occurrence of atrial fibrillation in acute Q-wave myocardial infarction. - Abstract
To investigate the role of left ventricular (LV) diastolic function in the maintenance of exercise capacity in patients with systolic dysfunction, symptom-limited cardiopulmonary exercise testing combined with radionuclide ventriculography was performed in 24 patients with an LV ejection fraction <35% after anterior myocardial infarction. The ratio of pulmonary artery wedge pressure (PAWP) to LV end-diastolic volume (EDV), an index of global diastolic function, correlated significantly with peak oxygen consumption at peak exercise (r = -0.55; p = 0.006), whereas ejection fraction at peak exercise did not. The change in PAWP/EDV ratio from rest to peak exercise was related to the increases in stroke volume (r = -0.54; p = 0.006) and cardiac output (r = -0.51; p = 0.01) during exercise, but the change in ejection fraction was not. Resting hemodynamics did not differ between patients with preserved exercise capacity (group 1,n = 8) and those with exercise impairment (group 2,n = 16). At peak exercise, stroke volume, cardiac output, and EDV were significantly higher, and PAWP and PAWP/EDV ratio were significantly lower in group 1 than in group 2, but ejection fraction and end-systolic volume were similar in both groups. Although the incidences of hypertension, LV hypertrophy, and infarct-related coronary artery lesions did not differ between the two groups, group 2 had a significantly higher incidence of non-infarct-related coronary artery lesions than group 1 (p < 0.05). Thus in patients with LV systolic dysfunction after anterior myocardial infarction, the major cause of exercise impairment and failure to increase LV performance during exercise was diastolic dysfunction associated with the presence of non-infarct-related coronary artery lesions with the potential for exercise-induced ischemia of the noninfarcted areas. (110) oriented YBa[sub 2]Cu[sub 3]O[sub 7-δ] thin films have been epitaxially grown on vicinal (110)SrTiO[sub 3] substrates by pulsed-laser deposition. Films with different oxygen deficiencies were obtained by annealing under various oxygen ambient. These films have very smooth surface and with their c axis aligned in one direction in the substrate plane. Electronic transport and polarized far-infrared reflectivity measurements reveal the unique features of the c-axis charge dynamics. A c-axis far-infrared reflectivity edge associated with the Josephson plasma in the superconducting state is observed. Our results demonstrate the potential usage of (110) thin films for the investigation of intrinsic interlayer charge dynamics as well as device application of high T[sub c] superconductors. SAMARIUM , *VALENCE fluctuations , *ELECTRIC fields , *VISIBLE spectra - Abstract
Electrical-field-induced insulator-to-metal (I-to-M) transition of samarium monosulfides was investigated systematically. Experiment results demonstrate that Sm0.9Ca0.1S undergoes the I-to-M transition when in a small electric field of 250 V/cm at liquid-nitrogen temperatures. However, simultaneous measurement of I–V characteristics and strain did not detect the electrical-field-induced strain expected from the large volume contraction originating from the valence transition of Sm. Mid-infrared to visible region reflectivity spectroscopy in the field-induced transition revealed no spectral change other than the temperature change attributable to Joule heat. This lack of change contrasts to the large-scale spectrum changes, such as a sharp rise in reflectivity, which appear in the metallic phase induced by pressure or element substitution. The detailed analysis of the field-induced strain suggests that filamentary metallic paths are formed during the breakdown process, just as they are for strongly correlated insulators. BACKGROUND: The extent to which health care systems have adapted to the COVID-19 pandemic to provide necessary cardiac diagnostic services is unknown.OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine the impact of the pandemic on cardiac testing practices, volumes and types of diagnostic services, and perceived psychological stress to health care providers worldwide.METHODS: The International Atomic Energy Agency conducted a worldwide survey assessing alterations from baseline in cardiovascular diagnostic care at the pandemic's onset and 1 year later. Multivariable regression was used to determine factors associated with procedure volume recovery.RESULTS: Surveys were submitted from 669 centers in 107 countries. Worldwide reduction in cardiac procedure volumes of 64% from March 2019 to April 2020 recovered by April 2021 in high- and upper middle-income countries (recovery rates of 108% and 99%) but remained depressed in lower middle- and low-income countries (46% and 30% recovery). Although stress testing was used 12% less frequently in 2021 than in 2019, coronary computed tomographic angiography was used 14% more, a trend also seen for other advanced cardiac imaging modalities (positron emission tomography and magnetic resonance; 22%-25% increases). Pandemic-related psychological stress was estimated to have affected nearly 40% of staff, impacting patient care at 78% of sites. In multivariable regression, only lower-income status and physicians' psychological stress were significant in predicting recovery of cardiac testing.CONCLUSIONS: Cardiac diagnostic testing has yet to recover to prepandemic levels in lower-income countries. Worldwide, the decrease in standard stress testing is offset by greater use of advanced cardiac imaging modalities. Pandemic-related psychological stress among providers is widespread and associated with poor recovery of cardiac testing.

Background: The coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic significantly affected management of cardiovascular disease around the world. The effect of the pandemic on volume of cardiovascular diagnostic procedures is not known. Objectives: This study sought to evaluate the effects of the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic on cardiovascular diagnostic procedures and safety practices in Asia. Methods: The International Atomic Energy Agency conducted a worldwide survey to assess changes in cardiovascular procedure volume and safety practices caused by COVID-19. Testing volumes were reported for March 2020 and April 2020 and were compared to those from March 2019. Data from 180 centers across 33 Asian countries were grouped into 4 subregions for comparison. Results: Procedure volumes decreased by 47% from March 2019 to March 2020, showing recovery from March 2020 to April 2020 in Eastern Asia, particularly in China. The majority of centers cancelled outpatient activities and increased time per study. Practice changes included implementing physical distancing and restricting visitors. Although COVID testing was not commonly performed, it was conducted in one-third of facilities in Eastern Asia. The most severe reductions in procedure volumes were observed in lower-income countries, where volumes decreased 81% from March 2019 to April 2020. Conclusions: The COVID-19 pandemic in Asia caused significant reductions in cardiovascular diagnostic procedures, particularly in low-income countries. Further studies on effects of COVID-19 on cardiovascular outcomes and changes in care delivery are warranted.

Abstract: The effective one-step physical approach is demonstrated for the fabrication of anatase titanium dioxide nanotubes through r.f. magnetron sputtering of TiO2 on a highly ordered nanoporous anodic alumina template. The nanostructured TiO2 benefited from the combination of unique properties of both the sputtering technique that provided well-controlled environment for the fabrication of anatase phase TiO2 and the porous anodic alumina (PAA) that provided uniform and ordered nanopores. The photocatalytic properties of TiO2 films were characterized following the degradation of methylene blue molecules under UV light irradiation. The photocatalytic activity of the nanostructured TiO2 films has been found to be approximately twice higher in comparison with the flat TiO2 films fabricated at the same conditions. MYOCARDIAL infarction , *MYOCARDIAL reperfusion - Abstract
To evaluate the relation between ST-segment analysis and microvascular reperfusion in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI), we studied 51 patients with first AMI who were successfully treated by percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA). The lead showing the greatest ST-segment elevation on the 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) was serially investigated until 24 hours after PTCA. Successful reperfusion was determined by technetium-99m tetrofosmin single-photon emission computed tomography. Impaired reperfusion (group 1: < 4 change in the sum of the defect score from before to immediately after PTCA) was observed in 24 patients, and successful reperfusion (group 2) was observed in 27 patients. Although ST-segment elevation was reduced significantly at 30 minutes after PTCA in group 2 (2.2 +/- 1.4 to 1.7 +/- 1.3 mm, p = 0.01), there was no significant change in group 1 (1.9 +/- 1.9 to 2.4 +/- 1.7 mm). Ten of 14 patients (71%) with persistent ST-segment elevation (DeltaST > 0 mm change in ST segment from before to 30 minutes after PTCA > 0) were in group 1, whereas 23 of 37 patients (62%) with ST-segment resolution (DeltaST < or = 0) were in group 2. The sensitivity and specificity of persistent ST-segment elevation for predicting impaired microvascular reperfusion were 42% and 85%, respectively. Thus, persistent ST-segment elevation 30 minutes after primary PTCA was a highly specific electrocardiographic marker of impaired reperfusion in patients with AMI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

TRANSLUMINAL angioplasty , *MYOCARDIAL infarction - Abstract
To evaluate the incidence and clinical significance of infarction-associated pericardial effusion in patients with successful primary percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty, we studied 214 consecutive patients with a first Q-wave acute myocardial infarction. Based on 9 clinical variables, multivariate analysis was performed to determine the important variables related to the occurrence of pericardial effusion. Pericardial effusion was detected by echocardiography in 45 patients (21%); pericardial rub (p <0.001), number of advanced asynergic segments (p <0.001), ventricular aneurysmal motion (p = 0.03), and pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (p = 0.04) were found to be the important variables related to pericardial effusion. Among 45 patients with pericardial effusion, 29 patients with no pericardial rub had significantly higher pulmonary capillary wedge pressure than those with pericardial rub, whereas 16 patients with pericardial rub had a higher incidence of angiographic no reflow and ventricular aneurysmal motion than those without pericardial rub. Patients with pericardial effusion and a pericardial rub had a higher mortality rate than those without pericardial effusion (19% vs 3%; p = 0.02). Thus, pericardial effusion is still a relatively common clinical finding after primary percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty, and those with pericardial effusion and a pericardial rub were associated with more severe transmural myocardial damage and higher in-hospital mortality. DOMAIN walls (Ferromagnetism) , *COPPER compounds , *IRON oxides - Abstract
In a ferroelectric helimagnetic phase of a spin-driven multiferroic, CuFeO2, we find irreversibly additive evolution of electric polarization P induced by sweeping magnetic field H under an applied electric field E, despite a large coercive electric field in the phase. From the unpolarized neutron diffraction experiments with in situ P measurements under applied E, we reveal that increment of P is achieved by the variation of an incommensurate magnetic modulation wave number q of the helical magnetic ordering in H sweeping regardless of increasing or decreasing H. Combining this result with the H dependence of the magnetic diffraction intensity and a result of off-bench P measurements, we conclude that the H evolution of P is caused by a change in a (ferroelectric) helicity domain volume fraction by driving the helicity domain wall (DW). Taking into account the results of further detailed P measurements, we provide a speculation for microscopic helicity DW motion. The present study demonstrates the magnetoelectric cross correlation in driving a multiferroic DW: we can activate the frozen ferroelectric DW by means of H sweeping. This is also an achievement of driving an antiferromagnetic DW, which is difficult in conventional antiferromagnets in principle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Streptococcus pyogenes causes a variety of human infections, and hospital outbreaks with this pathogen have also been reported. The purpose of this study is to describe the clinical characteristics of an outbreak of S. pyogenes involving 15 patients and four healthcare workers (HCWs), as well as the molecular characteristics of the causative isolates. The course and response to the outbreak were reviewed, and information on the characteristics of the patients was extracted retrospectively from the medical records. Whole-genome sequencing of the 16 causative isolates (14 from patients and two from HCWs) was also performed. All 15 patients were postoperative of head and neck cancer with tracheotomy, and 12 had invasive infections, primarily surgical site infections, all of which resolved without causing serious illness. All but the first case was detected more than 7 days after admission. S. pyogenes was detected in two patients after empiric antimicrobial administration was performed on all inpatients and HCWs, and the outbreak was finally contained in approximately 2 months. All isolates detected in patients and HCWs belonged to emm89 /clade 3, a hypervirulent clone that has emerged worldwide and was classified as sequence type 646. These isolates had single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) differences of zero to one, indicating clonal transmission. This study demonstrated an outbreak of S. pyogenes emm89 /clade 3 in a ward of patients with head and neck cancer. The global emergence of hypervirulent isolates may increase the risk of outbreaks among high-risk patients., Importance: This study describes an outbreak of Streptococcus pyogenes that occurred in a ward caring for patients with head and neck cancer and tracheostomies. Many cases of invasive infections occurred in a short period, and extensive empiric antimicrobial administration on patients and healthcare workers was performed to control the outbreak. Whole-genome sequencing analysis of the causative strains confirmed that it was a monoclonal transmission of strains belonging to emm89 /clade 3. The epidemiology and clinical characteristics of S. pyogenes infections have changed with the replacement of the prevalent clones worldwide. In the 1980s, there was a reemergence of S. pyogenes infections in high-income countries due to the spread of hypervirulent emm1 strains. emm89 /clade 3 has recently been spreading worldwide and shares common features with emm1, including increased production of two toxins, NADase, and streptolysin O. The outbreak reported here may reflect the high spreading potential and virulence of emm89 /clade 3., Competing Interests: Sohei Harada reports grants from Shionogi paid to his institution and speaker payments from MSD, Shionogi, Daiichi Sankyo, and NISSUI PHARMACEUTICAL outside the submitted work. - Abstract
We report the properties of an A-site spinel magnet, CoAl
2- x Gax O4 , and analyze its anomalous, low-temperature magnetic behavior, which is derived from inherent, magnetically frustrated interactions. Rietveld analysis of the x-ray diffraction profile for CoAl2- x Gax O4 revealed that the metallic ions were randomly distributed in the tetrahedral (A-) and octahedral (B-) sites in the cubic spinel structure. The inversion parameter η could be controlled by varying the gallium (Ga) composition in the range 0.055 ⩽ η ⩽ 0.664. The composition-induced Néel-to-spin-glass (NSG) transition occurred between 0.05 ⩽ η ⩽ 0.08 and was verified by measurements of DC-AC susceptibilities χ and thermoremanent magnetization (TRM) below the Néel transition temperature TN . The relaxation rate and derivative with respect to temperature of TRM increased at both TN and the spin glass (SG) transition temperature TSG . The TRM decayed rapidly above and below these transitions. TRM was highly sensitive to macroscopic magnetic transitions that occurred in both the Néel and SG phases of CoAl2- x Gax O4 . In the vicinity of the NSG boundary, there was a maximum of the TRM relaxation rate at Tmax < TN ) = (0.08, 4.0 K), where the paramagnetic, Néel, and SG states met. We successfully extracted the relaxation time η ( x ), the anomaly at Tmax merged with that of the Néel transition at a tricritical point ( ηtc , Ttc ) = (0.08, 4.0 K), where the paramagnetic, Néel, and SG states met. We successfully extracted the relaxation time τ and other characteristic parameters from the TRM isothermal temporal evolution based on the Weron function derived for a purely stochastic process. To distinguish the magnetic states, we compared our results with previously studied inversion-free A-site spinel, CoRh2 O4 , and CoGa2 O4 cluster glass. We generated an inversion-temperature phase diagram based on the comprehensive measurements of DC and AC susceptibilities, TRM, and specific heat in the range 0.055 ⩽ η ⩽ 0.664 for CoAl2- x Gax O4 . Based on this phase diagram, we speculate that a NSG quantum critical phase transition occurred at η = 0.050(6). Our findings are consistent with suppression of the long-range order antiferromagnetic state in CoAl2 O4 revealed through neutron diffraction studies, even at T << TN ., (© 2023 IOP Publishing Ltd.)- Published

- Abstract
Background: The genus Aeromonas is increasingly implicated in human infections, but knowledge of its clinical characteristics and antimicrobial resistance profiles has been limited owing to its complex taxonomy., Methods: We conducted a multicenter prospective cohort study of patients with Aeromonas infections at hospitals across Japan. Patients were eligible for inclusion if they had an Aeromonas spp. strain in a clinical culture and were considered infected at the culture site. Clinical data were collected, and isolates underwent susceptibility testing and whole-genome sequencing., Results: A total of 144 patients were included. Hepatobiliary infection accounted for a majority of infections (73% [105 of 144]), which mostly occurred in elderly patients with comorbid conditions, including hepatobiliary complications. The all-cause 30-day mortality rate was 10.0% (95% confidence interval, 4.9%-14.8%). By whole-genome sequencing, 141 strains (98%) belonged to 4 Aeromonas species -A caviae , A hydrophila , A veronii , and A dhakensis- with significant intraspecies diversity. A caviae was predominant in all infection sites except skin and soft tissue, for which A hydrophila was the prevailing species. The genes encoding chromosomally mediated class B, C, and D β-lactamases were harbored by 92%-100% of the isolates in a species-specific manner, but they often lacked association with resistance phenotypes. The activity of cefepime was reliable. All isolates of A hydrophila and A dhakensis carried an mcr-3- like colistin resistance gene and showed reduced susceptibility to colistin., Conclusions: Hepatobiliary tract was the most common infection site of Aeromonas spp., with A caviae being the dominant causative species. The resistance genotype and phenotype were often incongruent for β-lactam agents., Competing Interests: Potential conflicts of interest. M. S. has received a grant and honoraria from KANTO Chemical. - Abstract
This study investigated the effect of 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (MDP) in methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer on the adhesion of tri-n-butylborane (TBB)-initiated resins (MDP/MMA-TBB resins) to human enamel. Enamel surface conditions were either polished only or phosphatized surfaces. The 1.0, 1.7, and 2.0 mol% MDP/MMA-TBB resins, 4-methacryloxyethyl trimellitate anhydride (4-META)/MMA-TBB resin and MMA-TBB resin were prepared as luting materials. The shear bond strength was determined before and after thermocycles, and the results were compared using non-parametric statistical analyses (each, n=15). The MDP/MMA-TBB resins showed significantly better bond durability to enamel than other resins with or without etching. The 1.7 and 2.0 mol% MDP/MMA-TBB resins were suggested to be the optimum MDP concentrations from pre- and post-thermocycling results for the non-etched specimens. The TBB initiator resin including MDP was shown to be effective in bonding to human enamel, and this effect was enhanced in combination with phosphate treatment.

- Abstract
Serum levels of creatine kinase (CK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) isoenzymes were evaluated in nine zoo-managed Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) using a commercial agarose gel electrophoresis (AGE) kit. CK was separated into two major fractions, CK-BB and CK-MM, along with a small fraction of macroenzyme-CK type 2 (mCK2); CK-MM was the largest fraction. LDH was separated into five fractions (LDH1-5); LDH3 was the largest fraction. Age was negatively and positively correlated with the percentages of CK-BB and CK-MM, respectively, and negatively correlated with CK-BB and mCK2 activities. These results indicate that an AGE kit can be used to evaluate CK and LDH isoenzymes. Routine isoenzyme testing may enable early detection of disease and physiological changes.

- Abstract
Background: Definitions of cardiac sarcoidosis (CS) differ among guidelines. Any systemic histological finding of CS is essential for the diagnosis of CS in the 2014 Heart Rhythm Society statement, but not necessary in the Japanese Circulation Society 2016 guidelines. This study aimed to reveal the differences in outcomes by comparing 2 groups, namely CS patients with or without systemic histologically proven granuloma. Methods and Results: This study retrospectively included 231 consecutive patients with CS. CS with granulomas in ≥1 organs was diagnosed in 131 patients (Group G), whereas CS without any granulomas was diagnosed in the remaining 100 patients (Group NG). Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) was significantly reduced in Group NG compared with Group G (44±13% vs. 50±16%, respectively; P=0.001). However, Kaplan-Meier curves showed that major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE)-free survival outcomes were comparable between the 2 groups (log-rank P=0.167). Univariable analyses showed that significant predictors of MACE were Groups G/NG, histological CS, LVEF, and high B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) or N-terminal pro BNP concentrations, but none of these was significant in multivariable analyses. Conclusions: Overall risks of MACE were similar between the 2 groups despite different manifestations in cardiac dysfunction. The data not only validate the prognostic value of non-invasive diagnosis of CS, but also show the need for careful observation and therapeutic strategy in patients with CS without any granuloma., Competing Interests: None to disclose., (Copyright © 2023, THE JAPANESE CIRCULATION SOCIETY.)

- Abstract
Elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus (EEHV) causes a fatal hemorrhagic disease and is a significant cause of mortality in juvenile Asian elephants. A loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) method was developed to rapidly diagnose EEHV viremia. However, extracting DNA from whole blood samples to perform LAMP hampers diagnosis in a field setting. Here, we established the Direct-LAMP method, using heparinized plasma without extracting the DNA to speed up and simplify the test. EEHV-positive specimens were tested using the Direct-LAMP. The detection limit was calculated to be 10
1.3 copies/μL using the mimetic samples, which was almost identical to the value determined in LAMP in which DNA was extracted. Hence, the Direct-LAMP provided a more rapid diagnosis to save, which could prevent elephant deaths.- Published

- Abstract
The approved Japanese measurement method of circulating alkaline phosphatase (ALP) has changed from that of the Japan Society of Clinical Chemistry (JSCC) to that of the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (IFCC). We measured the serum levels of total ALP (t-ALP) and those of the isoenzymes ALP2 and ALP3 in 50 Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) specimens using both methods. The activities determined by the IFCC method were roughly one-third lower than those determined by the JSCC method. We present conversion formulae. Our results enable comparisons of historical and current data on serum ALP activities in endangered, zoo-managed Asian elephants.

- Abstract
Psoriasis is known as an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease due to its chronic inflammation. Studies have been conducted to evaluate the progress of atherosclerotic plaques in psoriasis. However, inadequate efforts have been made to clarify the relationship between atherosclerosis progress in coronary arteries and other important blood vessels. For that reason, we investigated the correlation and development of the coronary artery calcification score (CACS) and the abdominal aortic calcification score (AACS) during a follow-up examination. Eighty-three patients with psoriasis underwent coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) for total CACS and abdominal computed tomography (AbCT) for total AACS. PASI score, other clinical features, and blood samples were collected at the same time. The patients' medical histories were also retrieved for further analysis. Linear regression was used to analyze the CACS and AACS associations. There was a moderate correlation between CACS and AACS, while both calcification scores relatively reflected the coronary plaque number, coronary stenosis number, and stenosis severity observed with CCTA. Both calcification scores were independent of the PASI score. However, a significantly higher CACS was found in psoriatic arthritis, whereas no similar phenomenon was recorded for AACS. To conclude, both CACS and AACS might be potential alternative tests to predict the presence of coronary lesions as confirmed by CCTA.
